Funds raised at the Bill of Rights Awards Dinner are used for the much-needed legal and public education work by the ACLU Foundation of the Nation’s Capital. A portion of those contributions is shared with national ACLU for similar work nationwide. In the past year, ACLU-NCA Foundation funds have supported these important actions:

2013 LEGAL AND PUBLIC EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS FOR ACLU-NCA

> Collected $1.5 million from the District of Columbia after the Court of Appeals upheld a jury’s verdict finding that the District had a policy or custom of falsely arresting people for “contempt of cop.” > Convened dozens of community forums to discuss racial disparity in arrests in all wards of DC. > Dismissed our lawsuit challenging a federal statute that required disclosure of federal employees’ personal financial data on the Internet, after Congress responded to the lawsuit by repealing that requirement. > Filed three lawsuits on behalf of children aged 10, 14, and 14, who were brutalized by D.C. or Metro police officers because of alleged minor misconduct. > Conducted “Know Your Rights” trainings for hundreds of DC high school students and residents.

> Settled, finally, a 2001 lawsuit that established the right of D.C. firefighters and emergency paramedics to wear beards or long hair for religious reasons. Our clients received $550,000 in settlement of their claims for back pay and damages.

> Filed a lawsuit on behalf of a deaf inmate at the D.C. Jail who had received almost no accommodation for his disability while serving his 60-day sentence.

> Researched and authored a ground-breaking report exposing the selective enforcement of the District’s marijuana laws.
