Charting Our Course for the Future: Your Support Makes All the Difference

Cancer is expected to affect one in every three women and one in every two males. We are on a mission to ensure that no one in our community ever faces cancer alone. Thanks to your support, we have provided over 66,000 hours of service to the nearly 10,000 people that have come through our doors over the past decade.

Every day we are working on new ways to reach those in need. By providing access to individual and group support, educational workshops, nutrition and healthy cooking programs, and health and wellness classes, we can reduce the emotional and social impact of the disease on patients, family members, caregivers, and survivors.

Right now in our community, there are over 145,000 people living with a history of cancer, many of whom have not accessed our vital services. Barriers include lack of awareness of our services, complex cultural and socioeconomic issues facing underserved populations such as the Hispanic, Latino, African American and Asian communities, and age with adolescents and teenagers having almost no access to support in our community.

This year’s annual report will highlight the innovative ways we are making a difference in trying to reach all those affected by cancer in our community. Your gifts have made all the difference. Because of you, we are able to help our participants, to find the strength needed to live each day in the face of their disease or that of a loved one. We empower people affected to actively participate with their healthcare teams. We help survivors transition into a new normal. We give family members, caregivers, and friends a safe place to address their own unique needs. We help them find the hope they need to envision a future beyond cancer.

Thank you for choosing to be part of our story!

Sincerely,

Amy J. SutttonExecutive Director

2014 Highlights

C.H.E.F.S. (Cooking, Healthy Eating, and Food Strategies)Funded in part by Provident Bank Foundation and TD Charitable FoundationLaunched in 2014, this educational workshop integrates the American Institute of Cancer Research’s “Foods That Fight Cancer.” The goal of the workshop is to empower participants to make positive, long-term dietary changes. The launch was incredibly successful as each of the four sessions was completely booked with a waiting list. With nutrition rated as one of the top areas of concern for cancer patients, this program is an invaluable addition to the CSCCNJ programming.

School Based Support Groups for TeenagersFounding Pilot Sponsor: Sanofi USWe are proud to announce that in 2014 CSCCNJ developed the first evidence based, professionally led support group for teens in central New Jersey. This School Based Support Group launched with a pilot at Bridgewater Raritan Regional High School in the beginning of 2015. Students with cancer, or who are affected by a loved one’s diagnosis or death, will be provided with an onsite support group that they can attend twice a month. Most people do not know that teenagers and adolescents affected by cancer are an underserved population nationwide. We will continually be working to address this significant need in our community by expanding the group to additional school(s) in 2015.

Latina Cancer Support GroupFunded in part by Saint Peter’s University Hospital FoundationIn 2014 we expanded this unique support group to include individual support as needed by the group members. The Latina women who participate face complex family, social, and financial issues, in addition to their cancer diagnosis. Our group provides a safe place to discuss difficult topics within a professional, culturally sensitive, and supportive environment.

With the help of our generous donors, community partners, and volunteers we were able to launch several new programs and events in 2014.

Page 7: 2014 Annual Report - Cancer Support CNJ · a dish from each culinarian, and a five-course wine pairing. The Groundbreaker 2014 Award was presented to Matt McPherson, Chef and Owner

Social Connections for Kids & FamiliesFounding Donors: The Bernard Rothfeld Children’s Foundation & Evan BerkleyAs part of our Youth Initiative, CSCCNJ is now offering new activities to help build social connections between families, specifically children, who are affected by cancer. This program was launched in 2014 with two movie nights, during which the parents were able to go out for a nice dinner while their children watched movies and played games in the Dodie Loughlin Wellness Center. These activities will continue in 2015 with more movie nights, family outings, summer picnics, Halloween parties, and healthy cooking classes for the entire family.

2014 Highlights

Serving HopeIn 2014 we launched Serving Hope, a unique fine dining experience featuring celebrity chefs from The Ryland Inn, Battello, Fascino, Nico Kitchen + Bar, The Bernards Inn, David Burke Fromagerie, Ursino, and Ninety Acres. The event showcased how gourmet food can be both healthy and delicious with a custom handcrafted menu featuring signature seasonal cocktails, appetizers, a six-course dinner featuring a dish from each culinarian, and a five-course wine pairing. The Groundbreaker 2014 Award was presented to Matt McPherson, Chef and Owner of Matt’s Red Rooster, and Ellen Nardoni, Trustee of the Paul R. Nardoni Foundation, for their work in establishing the healthy cooking program at CSCCNJ.

Volunteers: A Priceless GiftServing over 1,000 people every year, we could not accomplish our mission without the hard work and dedication of our tireless volunteers. In 2014 we had 210 volunteers work over 3,000 hours! We were also happy to work with several corporate and community groups: Bridgewater Garden Club
