Donna & Angela

To celebrate a great year of Girl Scouting, focused on building girls of courage, confidence and character, we want to highlight accomplishments we have achieved with your support. At Girl Scouts, we strive to be leaders who provide girls with experiences and opportunities that encourage them to continue their leadership journey.

As the Girl Scout Research Institute’s findings have shown, girls face a variety of challenges, including being left behind as they struggle at school, home and in social environments. Now more than ever, girls need leadership opportunities. This is where Girl Scouts steps in. Providing transformational experiences, we encourage girls to become healthy and productive leaders in their own lives.

In 2014, we introduced innovative programming to best support girls throughout our 8-county footprint. By focusing on STEAM, Environmental Leadership, and Financial Leadership, we broadened the scope of enriching opportunities.

After reevaluating our goals and direction, we also refined our council mission to encourage the community to look into Girl Scouting and to “Try It, Love It, Share It.” This framework allowed our council to reach girls through new approaches including technology based initiatives, partnership opportunities, and increased volunteer support.

While the proper steps are being taken, we need your help to provide educational opportunities for girls to make a lasting impact in their lives and in the lives of others. When girls succeed, we all succeed . We look forward to continuing this journey with you.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

STEAMWith program support from Time Warner Cable, CyberGirl Tech Camp took off with a presentation from former astronaut and honorary WOD committee member, Joan Higginbotham. Girls learned the role of solar powered tools in space and built robots. From building robots to learning about social media safety, girls experienced multiple STEAM-related topics and saw how a career in STEAM can be out of this world.

Environmental Leadership & Outdoor Adventure Through Environmental Leadership programming, Older Girl Scouts led activities and made sure every girl was engaged in GSI (Girl Scout Investigation), Geocaching, a Naturalist Hike, Outdoor Cooking, and more. In 2014 alone, 1,200 Girl Scouts conquered their fears by climbing the Phoenix Tower at the Dale Earnhardt Environmental Leadership Campus at Oak Springs while 2,100 Girl Scouts created camp memories.

Community Impact

Key Programs

The Girl Scout experience is a leadership development program dedicated to providing knowledge, skills and behaviors to deliver a fun,

relevant and balanced program for girls.

Financial Literacy • MetLife

In partnership with Girl Scouts of USA, MetLife Foundation has committed to reach thousands of girls through the Girl Scout Global Financial Empowerment Initiative. As one of four Girl Scout councils selected for this partnership, girls from our Girls Go Beyond program attended a MetLife Day of Giving where they learned about budgeting, project implementation and more. With support from MetLife, financial literacy is making “cents” to Girl Scouts.

• Microsoft In 2014, we were selected to receive a donation from Microsoft as part of their initiative to give back to nonprofits with STEM-focused programs. With a $100,000 software grant and a $ 5,000 hardware grant to improve programming for girls, we are excited for the opportunities their support will bring our Girl Scouts!

• Cookie Program 9,176 Girl Scouts became cookie entrepreneurs by learning 5 skills. The cookie sale activity pin is an earned

award through completion of the activitiesoutlined in the Cookie Sale Activity Guide.

Scouting for the Cure • The Girl Scouting experience creates bonds as strong as a sisterhood, so when one of our sisters needs help, Girl Scouts step up and lend a hand. The drive to help one another strengthens when helping one sister turns into a community building project serving many. In 2002, a dedicated leader and troop created Scouting for the Cure to support a fellow leader battling breast cancer. Troops, families and friends come together to learn about breast health through fun and interactive activities and participants create personal mementos for women battling breast cancer in their community. 12 years later, this event continues to promote healthy living and community building in partnership with Susan G. Komen Charlotte.

Girls Go Beyond• We want to thank United Way, and additional funding partners, for allowing us

to serve 2,835 girls through our Girls Go Beyond program, in 2014. This program enables us to use staff time to deliver the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to schools, recreational centers and other nonprofit partners. With this support, Girl Scouts were exposed to specialized programming covering financial literacy, arts and culture, STEM and more.

Power of Girls• Power of Girls serves middle school girls who are typically underserved for reasons beyond

their control. In 2014, this program reached nearly 200 girls and empowered them to forge their life paths. Designed to introduce girls to new experiences and positive female role models, girls are encouraged to take advantage of new opportunities.

demonstrate extraordinary leadership through remarkable take action projects that have sustainable impact in their communities and beyond. Since 1916, girls have successfully answered the call to Go Gold,

59 million alumnae are more successful in school, develop a stronger sense of self, and report greater

satisfaction with life than their peers.

“Investing in others, recognizing their dignity and believing in their dreams are some of the most important things we can do. I am currently a troop leader for a group of 5th grade girls. The world will be very different when they are my age. We can’t really anticipate the types of challenges that they will face, but by building their confidence and self-awareness, helping them develop leadership skills, encouraging their eagerness to learn and try new things, and instilling in them a culture of service and respect, we are preparing them to be effective leaders of tomorrow.”

- Abigail Bucher Ness, 2014 Young Woman of Distinction

2014 marked the ninth year of honoring community leaders who have modeled the courage, confidence and character that Girl Scouts embodies. These women have made their community and the world a better place.

In 2014, the Director’s Cabin was completed and dedicated to Barbara Glazier Bernhardt, a longtime Girl Scout Supporter. For over 23 years, the Bernhardts have been fundamental supporters of our mission and Barbara has been involved since her days at Camp Occoneechee. After holding several positions at camp, she served as a field director, board member, and GSHNC’s president. At the dedication, her family, council staff and volunteers, and local supporters honored lifetime member, Barbara. Thank you to the Bernhardt family for their ongoing support of Girl Scouts and camp program opportunities.

In addition, the Sports Complex was completed, providing Girl Scouts with the opportunity to get outside and play soccer, softball, tennis, basketball and more. Thanks to a generous donation from Snyder’s-Lance, the softball and multi-purpose fields came to life.

Finally, we broke ground on our Environmental Center, made possible by Wells Fargo. With an overall theme of Wildlife Detectives, the exhibit and classroom areas will introduce girls to wildlife and inspire them to get involved in nature. In addition, exhibitors are working on an outside Natural Play Area and Interpretive Outdoor Signage. This next year, the murals will be completed and educational elements will be added.

The Keystone Society was established in 2008 and is composed of donors who have given to Girl Scouts, Hornets’ Nest Council for five consecutive years, regardless of the size of their gift. This society was established to provide the much-deserved recognition to those donors who invest in the development of today’s girls each and every year.

According to the dictionary, a keystone is something on which associated things depend for support or in an architectural sense, the stone in the center of an arch that holds the other pieces in place. These donors have a demonstrated commitment to being a strong support for girls in our community.

As you view the donor report, you will notice that members of The Keystone Society have been denoted by the “*” symbol.

Keystone Society

Girl Scouts, Hornets’ Nest Council gratefully acknowledges ALL donors who have invested in girls through their gifts in 2013. We regret that we are unable to list all of our supporters here, but we are very grateful for their important contributions. Every gift is important and helps us fulfill the mission to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.
