partnering & ENGAGING

The Plaza District is the heart of the neighborhood, and we work to build up our surrounding residential community. We work with area neighborhood associations, schools and churches to achieve common goals.

In spring 2014, the Plaza District Association helped lead the Gatewood Elementary KaBOOM Playground project. Gatewood did not have a playground within the entire one square mile of the neighborhood. With the Plaza District Association’s support, over $12,000 was raised, and 300 volunteers were rallied to help build an entire playground in 6 hours!

Postively Paseo is a community development housing organization that began working in the Classen Ten Penn neighborhood in 2013. Postively Paseo increases home ownership by providing families with the opportunity to purchase rehabilitated, restored, or newly constructed homes. The Plaza District partners with Positively Paseo on common goals and welcomes new families to the neighborhood. In 2013, Positively Paseo invested $428,000 in 6 homes. In 2014, they plan to invest $525,000 in 5 homes in Classen Ten Penn.

The Plaza District works with the Community Advisory Boards for both Gatewood Elementary and Eugene Feild Elementary. Plaza District businesses frequently donate to school causes, and Plaza District staff recruit necessary volunteers. In 2013, Plaza District participated in over 15 school events, programs and fundraisers.

We also partner with District Sponsor Fowler Volkswagen of Norman on events and projects that are innovative, creative and focused on boosting local business, music and the arts. By partnering with local corporations and organzations, our capacity to support the district and do outreach in the neighborhood is increased. We pride our efforts to partner, collaborate and build up or neighborhood for the better.
