Message from our President/CEO

Every year, SLI sets outcome measurement and strategic planning goals that are developed with input from our persons served, families, stakeholders, employees and board of directors. We evaluate the progress toward these goals continuously and measure indicators such as satisfaction, efficiency, effectiveness and access in the areas of programs and services, capacity, finance, fundraising, business practices and governance. I am pleased to report that the results of the 2014 goals show that SLI excelled in the areas of satisfaction with services, timely physician appointments and follow up, increased enrollment, increase in job skill development activities, financial stability, leadership and partnerships within the Topeka community. Movement into managed care as required by the state has been a struggle. There are challenges and we are learning to cope with the new system but it has certainly had a negative impact on our clients and services in general. Some of the challenges we face include:

• medical services for our clients being denied• billing and payment issues• not getting paid for services on time and in some cases not at all• duplication of services that we have been providing in the community • services being provided by the managed care companies in addition to us providing the service • plus numerous other obstacles

I am proud to report that after requests from the people we serve, we were able to start a job training and supported employment program with the help of the JOBS grant from Federal Home Loan Bank. We started three internal work crews for job training purposes that include janitorial, landscaping and vehicle detailing. Two requirements of this program are that clients’ enrolled take a 24

module curriculum related to job readiness and completing training on an internal work crew. People enrolled in this program learn numerous job skills that prepare them for community employment which is the last step in this program. As always, I wish to express my sincere gratitude to our supporters. It is because of your efforts, commitment and sacrifice that we are able to continue to provide exceptional services to people with intellectual disabilities in our community.

The Community Living Program has existed since 1972 when the first home opened for twelve men and women from Topeka and surrounding areas. Today, we serve over 100 men and women living

in nineteen (19) homes owned by SLI. We provide services for our person served 24/7/365 days a year.

In our Independent Living homes, we serve 38 men and women who have learned daily living skills and most have a part-time or full-time job. SLI provides services 15 hours a week to help with their needs.

Success for Cathy

Cathy Decker, SLI person served, has shown great perseverance and determination to achieve her goals. After struggling to find a job that was a fit for her, she acquired a job at Walmart. Because she never gave up and always continued to apply for jobs, she found one she really enjoys.

Cathy started working at Walmart in March and has learned many different skill sets. She works putting together sandwiches, wraps and pinwheels for customers to purchase. She likes working with all her co-workers that make the job fun!

Working at Walmart has allowed Cathy to have a steady stream of income to pay her bills and to gain her independence. With her extra spending money, she loves to spend time with her daughter to go to movies or just hangout together.

Cathy has been at SLI for 19 years and part of the Independent Living Program. Her favorite parts of SLI are the outings and fun activities that she and her family participate in. She really enjoyed the trip Independent Living persons served took to Abilene. Last month, at the SLI Annual Awards, Cathy received the Independent Living Program award for her achievement of finding a job, excelling at the job and working towards her independence.

Capitol® Federal Foundation and Lewis H. Humphreys Charitable Trust each awarded $25,000 to Sheltered Living, Inc. to cover a keyless access control entry for our 19 home locations. This grant allows more independence and safety for the SLI persons served.

With this support, our SLI homes will provide a greater level of security and safety for our clients. For SLI staff, it provides a level of convenience and allows our direct care staff to move between shifts and locations without having to obtain keys from the main office. The new system will save the organization time and money that can be applied to our client programs and services.

Sources of financial support

Kansas Gas Service, a Division of ONE Gas, Inc. GrantKansas Gas Service supports SLI and individuals with intellectual disabilities. SLI received a $6,000 donation to install automatic door openers for the service center bathrooms. Adding the door openers enables the clients who use wheelchairs immediate access without assistance to open and close the door. This eliminates a challenge and gives independence to our clients.

The SLI Golf Classic was established 15 years ago and has been an on-going fundraiser for SLI programs and services. The dollars provide for unfunded services such as client transportation, medical safeguarding and advocacy, nursing, personal medical supplies and dental services to name a few on the list.

The SLI Festival of Trees signature event for 37 years attracts over 5,000 people and has become a holiday tradition for families. Over 65 beautifully decorated trees and wreaths are on display for the communities enjoyment. Over the years $1.4 millon has been raised for SLI services.

Employees from the KS Department of Administration spent the United Way Day of Caring at SLI! They trimmed trees, planted flowers and bushes, stained the backyard gazebo and cleaned up the yard. They made our residential house feel like home for our persons served!

The Westar Tecumseh Energy Center employees volunteered their day building a new fence at a SLI residential location. The Westar Energy Foundation donated $1,000 towards the project. A great addition for our clients!
