Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics 

Mission and Vision

MISSION:  The Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics provides public voice and leadership to support and advance high quality teaching and learning of mathematics for all students.

VISION:  The Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics is a leader and authority in mathematics education, ensuring that all students have access to the highest quality mathematics teaching and learning. We envision a world where everyone is mathematically literate, sees the value and beauty of mathematics, and is able to use mathematics with ease, whether in problem solving or in modeling to support an argument.

EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETINGSIn 2014, the Executive Board continued to focus our meetings on committee activities prior to our business meetings.  The business meetings continued to provide an opportunity to hear from the president, vice presidents, regional directors, and liaisons regarding professional development opportunities in their geographical regions, curriculum, assessment and instruction, state testing program updates, and other areas of concern.  Although the vice presidents assure that all levels of mathematics education are represented at board meetings and the regional directors represent all geographical areas of the state, the real work of the organization is done primarily by our committees.  Board members meet in committees, and then convene formally for the business meeting. This allows for more informal discussion and preparation prior to the formal business meeting. The business meeting is conducted under Robert’s rules of order, where motions are made, discussed, and voted upon.  Periodically guest speakers will attend our meetings, e.g., Thomas Edwards, Wayne State University professor.

BUDGET AND ACCOUNTINGThe council has worked hard to build a strong financial structure.  The Executive Director, Chris Berry, oversees our budget and all account streams with the support of the Council’s treasurer, Robert Cooper, to ensure fiscal integrity and transparency.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE AND THE ANNUAL CONFERENCESOur annual conference is the culminating event of the year for the council. We are so appreciative of the many members who help us to offer a great conference year after year. This conference provides timely updates on implementing the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics as well as a variety of professional development options for mathematics educators that address their individual needs.  In 2014 the Annual Conference was held in Holland, Michigan, and chaired by Kevin Dykema.  In 2015, the conference will be held at Traverse City, Michigan.  The council continues to support mathematics education and teachers.  We are always interested in ways to co‐sponsor future professional development activities.

MCTM ADVOCACY AND ACTIONSThe Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics occasionally comments on pending legislation or issues of importance to mathematics education in testimony or letters to the Michigan Legislature, elected officials, or other governmental or nongovernmental entities.  In 2013, the council had a significant presence in Lansing through advocating in support of the Michigan adopted college and career readiness standards known as the Common Core State Standards for Michigan students.

President’s Report 2014

It has been a true pleasure to serve as the president of your council. I have served this organization as a Region Director, President Elect, and President.  It has been an honor to work side‐by‐side with some of the finest mathematics educators in the State of Michigan.

MCTM COLLABORATION WITH MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONRuth Ann Hodges has involved the council in the development of the crosswalk documents. The crosswalk documents are an essential tool for mathematics educators to use as they connect the Grade Level and High School Content Expectations to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The council has participated in many efforts including the creation of the GLCEs, HSCEs, and the clarification documents as well. We will continue to support MDE in future efforts that impact mathematics education.

MCTM SCHOLARSHIPSRobert Cooper (Chair) and the Scholarship Committee conduct the activities of the program by publicizing the opportunity, soliciting and reviewing applications, selecting awardees, and conducting the awards ceremony.  This is always a highlight of the annual conference.  Jean Williams (Chair) and the Scholarship Endowment Fund Committee have created a substantial endowment fund from a relentless, consistent effort along with sales of Adventures with Mathematics books.  The leadership of Jean and her committee are an inspiration to all of us.

MCTM PUBLICATIONS AND WEBSITEThe MCTM Newsletter is a symbol of pride that focuses on our issues and concerns in mathematics.  Members receive an electronic version of this publication quarterly.  Mathematics in Michigan (MIM) has been redesigned.  The first issues focused on assisting mathematics educators in implementing the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice.  Mathematical Practice (MP) 1, MP 2, MP 3 and MP 4 are in print with MP 5 and MP 6 coming to members in 2015.  Jane Porath, the MCTM Publishing Director, has done an outstanding job leading these efforts.

Our website (www.mictm.org) presents a very powerful image of this council that receives compliments from other mathematics educators from around the country.  Kathy Berry leads this work and has done an excellentjob in updating our website such that it is user‐friendly and allows easy access to critical and timely information.

The site offers general access sections and a members’ only section for MCTM members.  MCTM membership connects you with one‐of‐a‐kind exclusive resources and mathematics education expertise, the support of a network of nearly 1,000 people who care about mathematics education, and the ongoing effort to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics.

MCTM – WHAT’S AHEAD? The board reaffirmed our dedication to improving teaching and learning in mathematics education by refocusing our work on the following efforts: the council will collect, research and monitor information regarding, but not restricted to the following: curriculum, best practices, learning theory, legislative trends, work of affiliated organizations, educational technology, membership view points, and demographics including diverse and inclusive student populations.  The council will publish a newsletter and other publications to serve as a general communications link among all educators concerned with the issues in mathematics and to assist in the development, coordination and carrying out of a sustained program for improving instruction in mathematics.  The council will evaluate information, define positions, and structure appropriate action that will support quality mathematics education.  The council will provide quality professional development, communicate its positions, and network with its members. The Council will examine its fiscal status and take appropriate action to maintain a financially solvent organization.  The Council will review its existing practices and governance and initiate changes to meet its mission.

2014 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEEIn 2014 MCTM awarded the Miriam Schaefer Scholarship for $2,500 to Kayla Brewer

Kayla Brewer - Elementary, Rochester College

Scholarship Awards

Kayla Brewer was valedictorian of her graduating class at Auburn Hills Christian School in 2011. She is starting her senior year at Rochester College this fall 2014. Kayla is majoring in Elementary Education with a focus in Mathematics.  She has always been one of those students that excel in almost every math class.  During her senior year of high school, Kayla was a teacher’s assistant for a combined third and fourth grade class. The teacher in that class personally cared how each student interacted and if they were achieving to their highest levels.  She was the inspiration for Kayla becoming an elementary teacher so she too can make a difference in children’s lives and let each one know that someone does care about him or her. 

One area she wants to develop in her classroom is cooperative learning.   She believes cooperative learning done right, is better than basic group work by basing each student’s achievement on the work of the group as a whole. This teaches the students that each one has to contribute to the work; they cannot get away with letting one group member do all the work.  Following graduation from Rochester College, Kayla looks forward to beginning her teaching career and passing on her passion for learning and mathematics.

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION AWARD

The Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics Award for Outstanding Contributions in Mathematics Education, established in 2003, recognizes the recipient’s contributions to mathematics education in the state of Michigan. The award is the highest recognition MCTM bestows upon one of its members for contributions to mathematics education. 

Persons selected for this award have made significant contributions to mathematics education in one or more of the following categories:

1.   Active leadership in mathematics education at the local, state and national levels.2.   Outstanding contributions to the improvement of mathematics curricula.3.   Significant engagement in professional development for teachers of mathematics at all levels.4.   Contributions to mathematics education over a significant period of time.5.   Overall excellence of contributions to mathematics education.

The Council established a Service Award in 1984 to honor and recognize the service rendered by its colleagues toMCTM. To be eligible, the recipient must have served MCTM and not be a current officer. The officers include thePresident, Past-President, Recording Secretary, Treasurer, Vice Presidents, and Regional Directors. A person canreceive the award only once.
