Member Kudos2

Member: CASA of WestmorelandKudos: Standard Charitable Foundation has awarded a $2,500 grant to CASA of Westmoreland, Inc. to help recruit, train, and supervise a new class of volunteers to serve children who are currently on a waiting list and in need of a personal advocate. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is a volunteer-based organization that provides a voice in the courts on behalf of abused and neglected children in Westmoreland County. The recommendations of these volunteers assist the courts in determining the child’s placement in safe, permanent, and nurturing homes. Throughout 2012, CASA served 195 abused and neglected children in need of advocacy. The goal for CASA is to be able to provide service to every child in Westmoreland County who is in need of advocacy.

Sherrie Dunlap, director of development for CASA explains, “On behalf of the CASA of Westmoreland, Inc.’s board, staff, volunteers, and children, we thank Standard Charitable Foundation of Standard Bank for their generosity demonstrated by awarding this grant. This charitable funding will support the a new class of volunteer advocates, which are truly the heartbeat of our organization. One advocate, a consistent, reliable adult in the life of a child is often enough to break the cycle of abuse and neglect, not just for that one child but for generations to come. Giving to CASA of Westmoreland, Inc. is an investment in a better life for the children we serve and in a better future for our community.”

Kathleen Comini, manager of Standard Bank’s Mt. Pleasant office, comments “CASA is a project very dear to my heart! CASA began in 2006 as a result of Judge Feliciani and a few community members’ realization that extra measures should be put into place to protect the children of Westmoreland County. CASA volunteers can save lives and mend hearts, so we are proud to once again be a part of giving these children a voice against abuse.”

Standard Charitable Foundation’s mission is to provide financial support to not for profit organizations in the communities in which Standard Bank operates. The Standard Charitable Foundation was established in conjunction with the 2010 conversion of Standard Bank’s parent company from mutual to stock form.

If you would like to become a volunteer for CASA and be an advocate for a child, please visit www.westmorelandcasa.org or call (724) 850-6874. CASA also hosts ongoing events, donation opportunities, mailing list and newsletter, guest speakers and much more!

Peggy Powers Placement

A free service providing professional guidance and research to families in need of choosing

Approximately 20 years ago, Peggy stared out in the Senior Care industry (skilled nursing and personal care) holding many positions from Marketing Director to Admissions Coordinator to Licensed Administrator. Over the years, Peggy realized that so many families had no idea where to start, what questions to ask and desperately needed professional guidance and support during the stressful time of finding placement for their elderly relatives.

After 10 years of working for private and corporate owners of personal care homes, she decided to start her own placement service and became an “advocate for the aging” in 2003. At no cost, Peggy Powers Placement will research all of the possible financial and geographical senior placement options, assess their loved ones needs, arrange tours of homes, expedite paperwork for a smooth transition and educate the family in order for them to make a confident and well informed decision.

The business is run by Peggy Powers Hamilton and her lifelong friend, Ted Dornin who has caregiver experience. Extensive experience and true compassion are what Peggy and Ted bring to their clients. Peggy’s daugher, Billie Jo also assists with marketing and speaking engagements. The company is accredited with the Better Business Bureau and has achieved an A+ rating. Ted is a licensed Notary and provides free notary services to their clients. But most of all, Peggy and Ted love what they do. “For us, the service we provide is more of a ministry than a job. What a blessing to know you have made a difference in the quality of someone’s life”, states Peggy. Each client’s case is approached as if it was one of their own family members and they make themselves available 7 days a week.

Why is Peggy Powers Placement a member of the Norwin Chamber? “The benefits of being part of such a “community friendly” chamber is such a vital part of any business. The Norwin Chamber is a great referral source and offers a variety of ways to get involved. I have been a member for years and this chamber has been the perfect balance for many successful business and personal relationships”.

For more information on the services that Peggy Powers Placement provides, visit www.peggysplacement.com or call 888-837-3449.

What is health and where does it come from?

Knowledge is Power

That seems to be the million dollar question, especially in our society. Over the past hundred years humans have gone from being a super species to being the sickest species on the planet. The causes of all this sickness are chronic illnesses which are killing 80 percent of the industrial world. The Black Plague killed less people. So what is chronic illness and what is causing so many of us to acquire them? Chronic illness is defined as a health condition that is persistent or otherwise long-lasting. This includes diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, acid reflux, cancer, obesity, ADD/ADHD, fibromyalgia, depression/anxiety and the list goes on and on.

The medical community and pharmaceutical companies would like us to believe that all of these diseases are inherently “genetic”; there is nothing that we can do about them except take their pills which on average have over 70 different possible side effects. However, this cannot be true because our genes have not changed over the past hundred years. We as a species on this planet, like any other species have specific genetic requirements in how we should eat, move, think and socially interact and if we adhere to them, our genes will express in us health, vitality, wellness and a long life free from any and all of the aforementioned diseases. According to the latest scientific research all of these “chronic illnesses” are directly caused by our LIFESTYLE CHOICES. The good news and truth is that we can easily change our lifestyle to a more genetically congruent one.

It is no secret that we all spend too much time sitting and not enough time moving around. The latest research also says that the motion of our joints, more importantly our spinal joints, called proprioception, is the most important nutrient for our brains. It is the energy that charges our brains battery. Newsflash! We all have some level of lost joint function. Some of our spinal bones are restricted in moving to their “normal limits” causing an unhealthy decrease in the energy our brain needs to run our bodies and the presence of or lack of PAIN is of no importance.

The time has come for us to take back control of our health and how our bodies function because we can change, through lifestyle choices, our level of vitality, happiness and joy. Our nervous system which is made up of our brain, spinal cord and spinal nerves reach and control every cell in your body. Health is in fact how your cells are functioning. Are they strong and vibrant or are they becoming sick and weak? Is your nervous system detecting lifestyle choices that are toxic and deficient in what your genes require to express health? Your state of health (how your cells are functioning) is the direct result of your environment (lifestyle choices).

Proper Nutrition in the form of fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, lean grass fed beef and free range chickens and small amounts of fresh fish along with plenty of fresh water cover our nutritional needs from food. Probiotics, Vitamin D3 and Omega 3 rich fish oil and an organic multi-vitamin are all we need as far as supplementation. Strenuous exercise 3 times a week with a 30 min walk everyday covers our genetic exercise requirements. Healthy relationships and connections with others covers our social interaction and most importantly we need a spine that is free of restricted motion which can give supply our brain with all of the energy it needs to not only get us healthy but keep us there. Regular Chiropractic adjustments are needed to keep our energy flowing.
