2014 Curriculum Conference: LEADing a call to ActionThis year the keynote speaker was Dr Lyn Sharratt.

Lyn addressed the 1000+ attendees under the theme: ‘Putting Faces on the Data’. Lyn is an advocate of using high impact leadership strategies and how these can lead to improved outcomes for students.

Dr Sharratt then explored some Kimberley schools in the following days, and met with staff and students in Warmun, Billiluna and here at St Mary’s College. The leadership team from both the Primary and Secondary Campuses had the pleasure of working with Lyn, sharing our story and exploring avenues for continued improvement to ensure the very best outcomes for our students.

Dr Lyn was an inspiration to meet and has given the leadership team some short term goals for using data that we collect in different ways. We hope that we will have the opportunity to work with her again in the future.

This issue of Listening Hearts is a celebration of our students and staff and their pursuit of excellence; striving for their personal best

and achieving outstanding results.

Education for our students is so much more than what appears on our student reports, and as a Catholic school our education focuses on of the whole person to develop each of their unique God given gifts and talents. The range of our student and staff achievements, both in and outside the classroom, has been outstanding.

Throughout Semester Two, students have excelled, and despite our remote location our students have achieved great success on a local, state and national level. Our students have been involved in many programs, which enables them to experience learning outside the classroom through camps, retreats, academic pursuits, sport, creative and performing arts, cultural activities and excursions associated with each of the learning areas.

As a school community, we have worked together and united for many special occasions and achieved a significant number of goals. Our Listening Hearts motto is always at the forefront of our engagement within the College and the wider community. This semester our students on the Secondary Campus commenced their Service Learning Program, providing the opportunity for them to develop the values, skills and understandings needed to contribute to community wellbeing. Students were also given the opportunity to prepare for and receive the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation to support their faith journey.

Our students have taken the challenge to be involved in school leadership. Simon Hill and Chelsea Siebert as Head Boy and Head Girl of St Mary’s College and Daniel Ralph and Lani Pigram as Head Boy and Head Girl on the Primary Campus. These students have been outstanding role models for their peers and encouraged others to take on the leadership challenge in the future.

Recently, we witnessed the Graduation Ceremony for four of our primary ATAs, Ms Reannan Corpus, Mr Sonny Dann, Mr Joseph Davies and Mr Prince Dallas Hill, who graduated from Batchelor Institute with their Certificate III in Education Support. They have been outstanding both in their classroom work and finding the extra time and effort to complete their studies. The role of the ATAs is such an integral part of the teaching and learning model of our school. Throughout this process of study, important collaboration between the ATAs and teachers has further enhanced the delivery of quality teaching and learning experiences for all students in the classrooms.

The Year 12 students have spent their last official day in class, and this fine group of young men and women that we call the Class of 2014 have been farewelled by the College community. They now move on to their final exams and exciting futures. We thank them for the contribution they have made to St Mary’s College; they have each been outstanding role models for the younger students. Their formal secondary education is now completed and they leave to enter the next step on their life journey, remembering that they will always belong to the St Mary’s College family.

It is important to acknowledge and recognise that behind each of our students’ achievements this semester are proud parents,

guardians, families and dedicated staff, all of whom form the St Mary’s College community. Each play a vital role in each student’s holistic education and we greatly value this partnership. The person that our students have become through their Catholic education is something that does not appear on written reports but is equally important.

Our hope for all St Mary’s College students is that through their Catholic education the teachings of Jesus will stay with them for life. When faced with life’s challenges, I hope they will take the time to pray and remember that God is always by their side and that they never need to walk alone.

Mr Michael Pepper

Class of 2014 – Year 12 Students Graduate

October 29 was a day of celebration for the 2014 Year 12 students. The day commenced with a formal

assembly at Notre Dame University Hall. Students were joined by parents, family, friends and St Mary’s College staff. The Assembly was an emotionally moving occasion as speakers reflected on the students’ time at St Mary’s College. Head Boy, Simon Hill and Head Girl, Chelsea Siebert presented their personal reflections and spoke on behalf of the Graduating Class of 2014.

Graduating students received parting gifts from the College, and they presented the Principal with a cheque. The money had been fundraised by Year 12 students for the benefit of the Secondary student body.

Students came together in the late afternoon for Mass at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cathedral where Bishop Christopher Saunders celebrated their Graduation Mass. The Graduation Dinner was at the Sam Male Room at Cable Beach Club. Guest speakers were past St Mary’s College Students Rebekah Treacy and Samantha Tucker. The speakers encouraged the graduating students to pursue their dreams, and stay focused on their aspirations.

Emily Heil and Astuti Mawo Adung acknowledge past graduates Samantha Tucker and Rebekah Treacy.

Parents and Friends in Term 3

Looking back over term three from a parents and friends perspective, a theme of food, food and more food

emerges! Melissa Coggan got the ball rolling by organising our annual cake stall at the Boulevard. This year we also provided some sweet treats for the parents at both the primary house athletics carnival and interschool athletics carnival. A big thank you to Nat Giancono, Holly Snell, Jude Millard and Tamara Hamilton for serving and thank you to everyone for their tasty contributions to these fundraisers.

The Story Telling night was enjoyed by many again this year. It was lovely to see so many families snuggled up together to listen and also share stories against the backdrop of the campfire. Miss Di always puts on a great show and P & F love supporting her by providing the milo and biscuits.

Father’s Day raffle gave us the opportunity to celebrate the Dads! The Prizes were generously donated by Bunnings, Totally Workwear, Kimberley Camping and Outback Supplies, the Barber of Broome, Chinatown Pharmacy, Sportspower and McKeno blocks and Pavers. The many winners were delighted to be able to take home one their prizes.

The term finished with a magnificent crazy hair Disco held on the primary campus. The students had a ball and only stopped dancing to have and break and try some of the delicious food on offer. It was fantastic to see so many parents involved in the Disco by either cooking sausages, selling entry tickets, selling cakes, popcorn, cold drinks and ice cups and especially by having a dance with their children. A big thank you to Krystina Smith and Tamara Hamilton for providing tastings from their Your Inspiration at Home range which they kindly offered as a fundraiser with all profits and commissions being donated to the P and F. I would also like to thank Yo Play and Sun cinemas who donated vouchers for dance and crazy hair prizes which were also supplemented by the P and F. Thank you also to Pearl Sea Laundry who donated the toy prizes and Brumby’s who donated the bread. I must admit that I LOVED rocking out the tunes in my hot pink wig with the assistance of some year 6 students and I can’t wait to do it all again next year.

Year 6 Camp

Dampier Camp!By Holly, Year 6

In week 4 Grade 6 students went to Dampier Camp School for five nights. It was an enormous amount of fun. I will tell you my two most favourite things about this magical school camp: our first afternoon at the Camp School and visiting the Karratha Leisureplex.

When we arrived on the first afternoon everyone was really eager to get off the bus and stretch their legs. We all grabbed our bags and headed to the undercover area to find out our dorms and groups. I was in Dolphin dorm and in group 3. When we found out our groups and dorms everyone ran and made their beds. I think that was the most challenging thing I did that day! After making our beds the girls and I walked down to the dining room. That night we had mac and cheese with some salad for dinner and a delicious chocolate mousse for dessert. It felt really special to sit down and have a meal with all my good friends. After dinner and showers all the grade 6 students had a ping pong championship. It was loads of fun! From that moment I knew that this school camp would be the best one yet!

The day we visited Karratha was huge! Amongst all the amazing things we did the most fun thing for me was visiting the Karratha Leisureplex. When we arrived the teachers allocated activity groups and we headed off for the first activity. I was placed in Mr Sonny’s group and our first activity was basketball. I really enjoyed that. Patrick has a real talent for paying basketball. We spent 45 minutes there, and then we all headed back to the meeting spot for morning tea. For morning tea the ladies made us a fruit platter and the yummiest chocolate-chip cookies I think I have ever had! Afterwards our group changed into our bathers and went

swimming in the beautiful heated pool. It was fun and there was a waterpark just next to the pool that we could play on too. Our next activity headed was beach volleyball. Mr Sonny’s team won by two points. After the volleyball we met up with the other grade sixes for lunch. That day we had the yummiest sandwiches, packed full of veggies. Then our group went inside to the glow-in-the-dark mini golf. It was fun playing all of the little courses. Finally, when it was late in the afternoon we boarded the bus and headed for the Karratha Shopping Centre, but to report on that would be another one and a half pages!

The Grade Six Dampier Camp was a huge success and everyone had an awesome time. Thank you teachers for putting it all together for us.

Surfing with Years 3 – 6 Students

Year 3 – 6 students from St Mary’s College Primary were lucky enough to take part in a two week surfing program

at the end of Term 3. This program is part of the Physical Education Curriculum at St Mary’s and teaches students to develop skills in a non-competitive, lifelong sport. The conditions at Cable Beach are ideal for teaching children about surfing and surf safety.

The course covers water and sea safety, sun safety, beach awareness, for example. rips and other hazards and surfing skills. Two world class surfing instructors, Roz and Adrian, were able to come up to Broome to deliver the course to the St Mary’s students. The waves over the two weeks were absolutely incredible, with some off shore winds provided some perfect surfing conditions.

The confidence and skills gained by the students over the two weeks was amazing to witness, with most students being able to stand up on their boards after the first session. A huge thank you to Mr Joseph for helping out and also to the amazing instructors for passing on their passion for surfing.

St Mary’s College teachers are passionate and committed to their students and the College. Just as we are proud to profile our students, our teachers will be interviewed for this and future editions of Listening Hearts.

Mr Tim Clear – Assistant Head of Primary and Year 5 teacherLast edition we met Mrs Diane Latchman

What do you enjoy most about teaching? Watching the children getting excited about learning.

Can you share with us a bit about your background? I am West Australian. I have had 37 places of residence. I have lived all over Western Australia. I am very proud of my state. Our family travelled a lot when I was young, my father worked Hamersley Iron (now Rio Tinto). We lived in many remote areas.

What has been the highlight of your teaching career so far? Teaching at different schools around the state, always meeting new people and having the opportunity to teach children from different backgrounds.

Meet our teachers ….

Why did you want to become a teacher? My original career choice was to become an accountant. I travelled overseas when I was in my early 20s. I was working in London at a Poll tax office and dealing with many poor people who couldn’t pay their taxes. I connected with them, and helped them out. I found working with people more rewarding rather than pushing numbers. I came back to Australia and enrolled in teaching.

How do you work with your students to get the best out of them? As a teacher I provide activities that are meaningful, challenging and rewarding.

Aboriginal Teaching Assistants Graduation CeremonyThe Bishop of Broome, representatives from

CEO Perth and Kimberley and Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education were among the special guests, family members, students and staff who attended the graduation Ceremony for the Aboriginal Teaching Assistants who completed their Certificate III Education Support.

The students were recognized by the Principal Mr Michael Pepper, for their achievements through many hours of commitment, study and hard work, as well as their daily work in the classroom. Mr Pepper also stated the role of the ATA’s is such an integral part of the teaching and learning model of our school.

Music at St Mary’s College

Primary CampusMark Cain, a Perth based musician, visited the Primary campus in Term 3, this was his second visit to St Mary’s as he was part of the Musica Viva performance who visited in 2012.

This year Mark worked with our Year 4 students delighting them with his hand made instruments including the rubber glove bagpipes, straw reorders and the Soprano Saxophone.

Dr Allan Zavod, Jazz MusicianDr Zavod lived in the USA for 30 years, with a career as a Classical-Jazz Fusion Pianist and Composer. Only in the last 7 years of living in Australia has he experienced travelling his own country. Dr Zavod has a keen interest in furthering the musical skills of school-age students and St Mary’s College students were fortunate to have Dr Allan visit and perform for them in Term 3.

Secondary CampusStudents across all levels performed at community events during Term 3. A group of Middle Years students performed at the opening of the Secondary Art Show at the St John of God Heritage Centre, Upper School students played and sang at the Performing Arts Mid-Year Concert.

Students have enjoyed using the jam hubs purchased earlier in the year by funds from the Parents and Friends Association.

Melbourne Exchange 2014

Revona and Byron reflect on their experiences.Revona Till, Year 10

We left Broome on a windy and cloudy day on the second Sunday of the Term 2 holidays. I travelled to Melbourne with Natasha Lawford, Sharee Dolby, Annika Lawrence, Keely May, Clarissa Churchill, Reuben Lawford, Gordon Churchill, Ricardo Nungatcha, Byron Pigram, Jennifer Cambridge, Carlene Smith and Yoshi Hunter.

During the first week in Melbourne I went to All Hallows’ with my host sister. On the third day of the first week I went with Grace to ‘big Gen’ (the main campus of Genazzano College). We did cooking there in the last period of the day. When I first went to school I thought that All Hallows’ was Genazzano College, I didn’t know that there was ’big Gen’ as well.

My school days at All Hallows’ and ‘big Gen’ were a huge experience for me, going to school with so many girls, I was thinking to myself to how it was very different because they had no boys and is a big College with over 1100 students.

I was thankful to my host family for keeping me safe and treating me with respect and love. I will never forget their kindness. My host family took us to the snow, I had a lot of fun going to the snow, but although it was cold, is still enjoyed it. I also loved playing for Grace’s basketball team. It was fun and I also made other friends during these days and I had fun with my host sisters.

The MCG game, Hawks versus Swans was champ. That was my first football game in Melbourne, it was raining and cold too. I couldn’t believe there were so many people, over 72,000 at the MCG watching the game. The footy game was the best weekend I had on the exchange.

During this exchange I have learnt a lot of different things about myself and the world outside the Kimberley. Experiencing life in a big city was special for me. I really loved this trip, it has been the best time I’ve ever had with the St Mary’s students, teachers and my host family.

I would like to say this to other students at SMC – if you have the chance, you should think about applying for this trip in the future. I reckon if you get to go you mob will have lots of fun. I loved this trip.

Byron Pigram, Year 11

From my experience in Melbourne I have learnt a number of things.

First thing is just how much study the students at Xavier have to do, as well as attending six periods a day of classes ranging from Latin to maths, literature to media. The students also have 3 hours of homework every night. They even find time to play sport and do music.

The second thing I have learnt is that it’s not always easy to get to places. Anton and I had to wake up at 6.00am every morning so that we could catch the tram to school. Trying to get to sports on Saturdays was also a mission. We had to drive for 1 1/2 hours to Geelong for soccer. The long trip gave me plenty of time to think and also to get to know my teammates and friends.

The last thing I learnt is how fortunate the students are to have so many sporting opportunities such as rugby, football, basketball, soccer and many more. However, the students are required to put in the hard work at training if they want to play and succeed in their chosen sport. My host brother Anton trains four times a week for two rugby teams as well as doing extra time in the gym.

All these things have shown me how hard people are willing to work in order to achieve their dreams. The word that can sum all this up is commitment. It is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

When we were in Ballarat we visited Loreto Sister, Sr Cynthia, who was a past Principal of St Mary’s College, we enjoyed meeting her and talking about Broome and people she knew. Yoshi was one of her students when he was in Year 3.

Taiji Exchange 2014

In 2008 we at St Mary’s College celebrated our centenary year. In July of that year we took the time to remember the

past and to give thanks for all who belonged to our school, to showcase our achievements and our vision for the future of the College. It was a very significant coincidence then, that during the celebrations, our first exchange between Taiji School and St Mary’s took place.

Broome and Taiji in Wakayama Japan have historical and cultural ties from the early days of Broome’s pearling industry. In 1981, a formal civic agreement was signed between the Shire President of Broome and the Mayor of Taiji Town Council to become sister towns.

In addition to this St Mary’s College plays a pivotal role in this relationship, as in 1908 the Japanese families of Broome strongly supported and assisted the Sisters of St John of God to establish St Mary’s School. Consequently, many of the first students were Japanese. Until today, St Mary’s College students still have strong historical ties and family connections with the Japanese. In particular with the people from the Wakayama prefecture, as this area is where most of the Japanese pearl divers and crew came from to work in the pearling industry.

The exchange program between our two schools is a perfect opportunity for the students to be ambassadors representing their schools, their towns and their countries. With each trip, whether Taiji students are visiting Broome or vice versa, our students grasp the opportunity to learn about a different culture, to share their own through visiting the schools and homestay and to realise that they play an important role in reinforcing and building on the existing historical links that already exist.

In August this year six students and five staff came from Taiji. The St Mary’s College community, our students, the hosting families and our staff warmly welcomed the visitors who thoroughly enjoyed the experiences of a jam packed schedule for six days. The connections and bonds between our two towns and our schools were evident when the visitors saw the Japanese street names in our town, when they attended exhibitions such as the Relationships exhibition, where they

could gain an insight into the relationships formed by the Sisters of St John of God with the Japanese people and with the people of the Kimberley .The Opening of the Common Gate exhibition where the display boards of stories, photos and historical facts depict the life in Broome for Aboriginal people nearly 60 years ago. This was still the time when they were denied equal rights as citizens of Australia. During the Pearl Luggers tour the visitors were able to be guided through a historical journey of the early pearling days and very importantly to be able to pay homage to their fellow deceased countrymen, and ancestors at the Japanese cemetery. An overnight trip to the Dampier Peninsular was a chance for our visitors to see and experience firsthand our beautiful country and coastline and to gain an important insight into the history and culture of the Indigenous people of this area. We did manage to fit in class room and sports activities during the school day which was an interesting time for both our students and the visiting students. Our St Mary’s students were perfect hosts at this time.

With the program in its seventh year, I acknowledge that the success of this program is due to a community of people working together. Today we still work alongside the Shire of Broome to complement the sister city relationship and I would especially like to acknowledge Mr Campbell, the Shire President for his understanding and support in this school exchange program over the years. To the students and families of St Mary’s who always welcome our visitors I say arigatou gozaimasu (thank you very much). The Taiji staff are always touched by your generosity and kindness. Thank you also to the staff of St Mary’s for your support and who assist and contribute to the success and continuation of this program.

I would recommend parents to encourage your children to take an interest in this extraordinary exchange program. To understand the historical ties and to experience the friendships we have built with the people is a lifetime opening. In 2015 we will be taking a group of St Mary’s students to visit Taiji town. This will be the fourth time for St Mary’s students to participate in the program; I encourage them to take the opportunity to apply.

Anthea Demin, Co-ordinator.

Walarba Bugarri – Follow The Dream Partnerships For SuccessTerm 3 was a busy term:

The World of Work Program Year 9-10Year 9 and 10 students took part in the national Worlds of Work (WOW) Program, run by the Foundation for Young Australians. The program is designed to equip students with the skills and beliefs to make smooth transitions into life beyond school. As the WOW program takes them on “a journey that broadens their views on what it means to be successful in the changing world of work.”

The students learnt important skills when presenting themselves at interviews or making a speech. They learnt the way to use effective body language and how to ask and respond to questions. The students were privileged to visit a number of work places including the Broome Customs House and the Shire of Broome Offices where the students interviewed a number of employees to find out their ideas

about success. The 4 day experience culminated with the students making a presentation to members of the Broome community.

The Middle School Cultural CampYears 7-9 students took part in the Middle School Cultural Camp to Port Smith. Sixteen St Mary’s College students attended the camp this year. The highlights of the camp were crabbing, fishing, shell collecting, a quiz night and the camp talent quest! As well as catching salmon, one student even managed, single handily, to catch a stingray.

“I really liked the camp because I got to talk to people I don’t usually talk to” Elizabeth Cox

“I love camping and especially crabbing and fishing, which I haven’t done for a long time.” Oseyahn Monk-O’Meara

The Years 11-12 Formal Dinner We celebrated the achievement of our Upper School Students at a formal dinner at the Cable Beach Club. We were fortunate enough to have some of our ex-students as guest speakers, excellent music from Jadadi, some revitalisation games and a Certificate ceremony. We thank all those who made the evening such a success and look forward to our Year 12s coming along to the dinner in future years, sharing their stories of success.

The Primary Choir singing ‘Thy Word’, opened the Wirlburu Exhibition and Open Night. After a wonderful introduction, thanks to the choir, the Year 3s sang in Yawuru. For the third

item in the introduction some of the Year 6 girls played the ukulele and sang “Riptide”. All of the items were amazing. After Wirlburu was open people flooded into the exhibition to see all of the exceptional artwork. Everyone was able to cast a vote in the People’s Choice Awards – recognising the artistic talents of individual students across the years. It was a fantastic night full of fun. Parents were amazed at all of the lovely artwork that their children had produced.

Squaring the Wheel Workshop

A group of Year 8 and Year 10 Drama and English students had the opportunity visited the ‘Pigram Garden Theatre’ at the Broome Civic Centre early in Term 3 to participate in a circus workshop ran by ‘Squaring the Wheel’. Students enjoyed the chance to learn balancing and juggling skills. Special thanks to Country Arts WA and the Broome Shire for providing St Mary’s with this opportunity.

Managing Carmen Workshop

A group of Drama students from Years 9-12 had the opportunity to work with a group of professional actors and directors from the ‘Managing Carmen’ theatre production who visited Broome in early August. The actors spent an hour with the students workshopping rehearsal techniques and discussing the life of an actor.

YOH Fest Kimberley Final‘Techno World’ – Out of This World

On Thursday September 11, many schools from Broome performed in the YOHFEST (Youth on Health Festival).

Ms Elaina, Miss Nicki, Miss Coco and Miss Josie from the Primary Campus were all working very hard to prepare the Drama students for their performance.

We performed Techno World, and we feel we did an awesome performance and had heaps of fun on stage.

It was an amazing night with some amazing performances.

On September 19 the results came out. Sadly there wasn’t a competition for primary entries so Techno World didn’t get a chance at fame and fortune.

Later that week we received an email from one of the organisers of Yohfest asking if our drama group would like to perform our act ‘Techno World’ at the finals competition in Mandurah. The judges had been very impressed with our performance that they thought it would be fantastic if it could be seen by a wider audience. Of course we said yes!

Everyone is so excited and can’t wait to perform it again.

Techno World encourages people of all ages to have a break from their technological devices and spend more quality time with their family doing fun things together.

West Kimberley Academy Term 3

Term 3 was a busy one for the West Kimberley Academy with 4 trips, a couple of staff vs students matches and

numerous trainings. It all kicked off in the first week with a scratch match at St Mary’s oval, this was the first training session for the term and turned out to be a ripper with about 40 boys who were eager to show off their skills.

Week 2 saw us take 11 students who we saw as young leaders in our schools on a leadership camp in and around Broome with one of our corporate sponsors Steve Lewis from PPA. Our Boys were great hosts and had just about as much fun as our guest; activities included artefact making, crabbing, leadership activities and hunting. To top off the camp the leadership group took Steve out for lunch and did a small presentation to him that he really appreciated and couldn’t wait to share his experience with his family and colleagues.

Following the Leadership camp we had our annual employment forum in week 3, the forum gives Clontarf students from the Kimberley exposure to potential employers, and in return the employers have a chance to show these students what’s available to them after school and what they are looking for in employees. The forum is for the year 11 and 12 students who seemed to have had a great time and were able to take a lot out of the experience.

Once a term we run an engagement camp for years 8-10 and we target the disengaged students, take them camping and

show them what we have to offer and hopefully get them to participate more with us and with school.

Half way through the term is the Troy Bycroft Carnival in Fitzroy for the year 10 and 11 students who play against 2 other academies. Unfortunately we just lost in the grand final but the games were played in great spirit and every one had a blast.

In between our camps throughout the term we still run our footy training sessions and Wednesday afterschool community programs. This includes a clinic with BOSCCA, a cricket program and interacting with patients at Germanus Kent.

Our last trip for the term and definitely the biggest for the juniors was the Northern Carnival in Kununurra. The carnival hosted 14 Clontarf teams from the Kimberley and N.T. and was a great exhibition of talent. The WKA came second overall and only lost 2 out 7 games in 2 days but held their heads high in true Clontarf spirit, this wasn’t all they did, they also conquered Emma and Chamberlain Gorges, and relaxed at Zebedee Springs in the El Questro Wildlife Park.

To wrap up the term was our annual Beach Cricket Carnival and the Big Day Out reward for the students with great behaviour and 90%+ attendance for the term.

Shaun Marsh Visits St Mary’s College, BroomeWednesday September 24 saw Shaun Marsh

(brother of Mitchell, and son of Geoff) visit St Mary’s College. Shaun was a member of the victorious Perth Scorches in the Big Bash League last season and has represented Australia in Test, One-Day International, and T20 cricket. The main purpose of the visit was to promote the up-and-coming 2015 One-Day International World Cup which is to be held in Australia and New Zealand in February and March, 2015.

Accompanying Shaun were staff from the WACA and the actual World Cup trophy which Australia are hoping to win for the fifth time since its inception in 1975. Students were given an opportunity to pose questions to Shaun and a lucky few were able to hold the World Cup. We wish Shaun and the Australian team the very best of luck and we thank the team from the WACA for coming to St Mary’s College.

Primary Athletics

House Athletics Carnival – Primary St Mary’s Primary House Athletics Carnival was held on Friday August 8 on the Secondary Campus oval. The day started with House Marching, which as usual, was a great opening to the day. The students represented their houses and looked magnificent as they marched in formation on the oval.

All students had been working very hard preparing for the carnival and the excitement on the day was at an all-time high. The atmosphere around the oval was amazing due to all of the dedicated parents and friends who had come along to spectate. There were some closely contested races with every student giving their all and performing at exceptional levels. The team games were a highlight with some outstanding teamwork and encouragement displayed.

A huge thank you to all of the staff involved for helping the carnival to run smoothly, and a special thank you to the parent volunteers who helped on the day with various jobs such as starting, timing and handing out ribbons. This carnival would not be possible without the help and support of these people, especially the grounds staff who do such an amazing job of marking out the lines and setting up the finish line and marquees – a truly professional job. Well done to all

of the Sports Captains who helped in the preparations for the carnival and also led their houses in some inspirational cheering, especially O’Brien House which won the cheering competition with an awesome cheer!

Again, it was an incredibly close finish for the House Athletics Shield with the final result coming down to the last few races. Congratulations to O’Brien House for winning the shield in 2014, and huge congratulations to the students listed below that took out the individual champion medals.

West Kimberley Primary Athletics CarnivalWest Kimberley Primary Interschool Athletics Carnival was held at St Mary’s Secondary Oval on Friday August 29th. This year 7 schools competed for the coveted shield. The grounds and oval looked magnificent thanks to the outstanding work of Ralph and his colleagues. A huge number of parents and friends were also in attendance which made the atmosphere electric. The equity shield, for most improved school, was won by Holy Rosary Derby, congratulations on a huge effort! These carnivals are not possible without a team effort so many thanks to the parents, Natalie Newton, Tiana Leak, Lisa Drage and Luilyn Wilson for helping out on the day with some very important jobs. The teachers from St. Mary’s who were also in attendance demonstrated great teamwork, as were the parents and staff from the competing schools. This all helped the carnival run smoothly and allowed us to focus on the brilliant individual and team performances displayed by the students. A special thank you to the Head boy and girl, Daniel Ralph and Lani Pigram, and all of the Sports Captains who did a fantastic job helping out on the day. Year 10 Work Experience

In the final week of Term 3, all Year 10 students were in the workplace developing skills and experiences to assist

them in their future working lives. As always, there was a diversity of work roles and areas of industry that students were involved in. For some students, their interest in a chosen industry was consolidated during the week of work experience. Other students, however, found that their experience was a little, or a lot different from what they imagined to be their perfect occupation. Regardless, any experience of the workplace is a valuable personal development opportunity and brings a young person a step closer to something that matches their aptitudes and personal qualities.

Our students could not have these experiences without host employers providing the opportunities to our students and I acknowledge the support of parents and guardians who listen to, and who provide our students with guidance and encouragement.

Aidan Mitchell,

VET and Careers Coordinator.

Sacrament of ConfirmationCandidates preparing for the Sacrament of

Confirmation attended a Retreat Day the day before the Confirmation. The students pilgrimaged from the Holy Place to the Cathedral reflecting and praying along the way.

Candidates then had some opportunities to explore the Sacrament of Confirmation more closely and made their Reconciliation. The Sacrament of Confirmation Mass was a lovely celebration for our candidates and their families and Monsignor Paul was our celebrant, he stated that you only get out of a mass what you put in, so thank you to our students, family and staff that put so much into the mass, to ensure we all got so much out of it! The Sacrament of Confirmation is an important part of our faith journey - congratulations to our students.

Past Students

Our past students are an important part of our St Mary’s College story and we are proud to continue this valued connection past graduation to celebrate our great community.

Mark FoglianiMark completed his entire schooling at St Mary’s College. He started in Kindergarten in 1994 and continued on to graduate from the College in 2007. After graduation he joined the team at Goolarri Media Enterprises as a trainee cameraman. Mark thoroughly enjoyed this job as he got to travel to places in the Kimberley, gain great technical skills and work on many important historical projects. His talents were greatly missed when he started work at Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) at Hope Downs 1, northwest of Newman in early 2011. Flying in and out of Broome, Mark works with a small professional team and is now considered one of the senior Pit Technicians on-site.

The job entails important duties and requirements such as safely conducting geological grade control samples, assisting with the accurate capture of the logging and storage of all geological and analytical data. Mark also assists the Geologists with blast hole logging as well as other duties.

Mark is the third generation of his family to have attended St Mary’s and remembers his days at St Mary’s as happy ones. He is grateful for the lifelong friendships that were made at the school and remains connected to most of his class mates and others.

Sacha Bailey Sacha Bailey graduated from Year 12 at St Mary’s College in 2009. Sacha was recently presented with her Batchelor of Nursing degree at the graduation ceremony at Notre Dame University in Broome. During her studies she undertook clinical placements at Derby, Carnarvon and Geraldton and will take up a position at Royal Perth Hospital.
