2015 BOARD OF DIReCTORSDear Friends,
The 2014 Annual Report provides a snapshot of the passion, hard work and commitment of community-minded people in our region who are motivated to come together to improve lives.
As I reflect on my year as Board Chair, I’m proud of the seamless leadership transition that occurred as Steve Kinkade, former President, retired after more than 40 dedicated years within the United Way network. After a successful national search, we warmly welcomed Blackhawk Region native, Mary Fanning-Penny as the new President. As forward momentum continues to build, we look ahead to year-round engagement, opportunities for campaign growth and ongoing dialog to determine our community investment priorities.
In 2014, United Way Blackhawk Region partnered with 42 nonprofit agencies providing 101 health and human service programs tackling our communities’ most pressing issues. We know the academic success of children, financial stability, and health of families are vitally important for the prosperity of the entire region. That’s why the board of directors approved an investment of $1.95 million for programs focused on education, income and health - the building blocks for a good quality of life.
In addition to meeting basic needs, our Program Partners are also focused on proactive solutions to address societal conditions. Alongside our dedicated partners, we embrace the “teach a man to fish” philosophy and are working to unite individuals and families with the tools and resources needed to become self-reliant and successful.
In 2015 and beyond, United Way will be uniquely positioned to engage people and organizations from all across the community who bring the passion, expertise and resources needed to get things done. Our leadership team takes its role as stewards seriously, and is dedicated to ensuring that your donor dollars are invested in programs that will lead to long-term change. You will be hearing more in the months ahead as our strategic plan solidifies, and our transformation to a community impact model organization progresses.
Thank you for your generous support.

Presented to an individual or program that strives to create meaningful change and demonstrates measurable progress toward improving lives and strengthening our community.
During her 12-year career as Executive Director at Community Action, Inc., Lisa’s inspirational leadership crystalized the agency’s mission of providing ‘pathways’ out of poverty with a focus on culturally-relevant education, employment and training programs.
Some of the hallmark programs during Lisa’s tenure included the Fatherhood Initiative, established with a $100,000 venture grant from United Way, which works with fathers 18 and older who are unemployed and have active child-
support orders. The Beloit Fresh Start Program helps participants obtain a high school diploma and training to earn industry-recognized certificates. Community Action programs that offer services to low-wage workers include the Skills Enhancement Program’s case management and skills training and Community Kids Learning Centers, which provide low-cost early-learning opportunities, with flexible hours, for children of working parents.
As a dynamic trailblazer, Lisa has been able to envision and execute innovative initiatives to prevent and reduce poverty. The Community Action Inc. team is achieving measurable and impactful results. Of the first 50 men enrolled in the Fatherhood Initiative, 37 completed the program and 33 obtained full-time employment. Eighty two percent of participants in Beloit Fresh Start have obtained a high school diploma and industry-recognized certificate. The Skills Enhancement Program, provided to approximately 50 households annually, saw the average wage increase for those completing the program at $3.93 per hour, $13,000 annually.
United Way values its strong partnership with Community Action, Inc. and commends Lisa on her years of leadership, activism and advocacy.

Presented to an individual for their outstanding volunteer service to the United Way Blackhawk Region.
United Way’s Day of Caring serves as a community service blitz. Volunteers and corporate teams roll up their sleeves on a variety of projects to benefit nonprofit organizations, friends and neighbors throughout our region. Coordinating the logistics for an event like this requires
enthusiasm, strong organizational skills and an intense desire to make a difference. Thus, Beth was the clear choice for the 2014 Geraldine Hedberg Award.
For the past two years, she has served as the volunteer coordinator for the Day of Caring and steadily improved operations and participation. In 2014, the number of volunteers increased nearly 50% as compared to 2013, with more than 725 volunteers from 27 companies teaming up to work on 83 projects. Beth was also instrumental in helping to secure the use of Regal’s corporate hangar at the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport – a unique venue for the 2014 Campaign Kickoff and Day of Caring breakfast.
United Way applauds Beth’s commitment to volunteerism and deeply appreciates her generosity of spirit.

Beloit Health System volunteers dig a hole to install a wooden post during a Day of Caring project at the Salvation Army in Janesville.
Presented to a company that displays exceptional support to United Way through its workplace campaign and volunteer support.
Regal team members give, advocate and volunteer. That’s what it means to LIVE UNITED. In other words, they walk the walk, with a resounding 94.6% of employees participating in the United Way campaign. As strong supporters of United Way’s mission, Regal is dedicated to improving lives and strengthening our community.
In 2014, Regal’s campaign total reached $129,424 which represents an increase of $19,959 over 2013. The team’s already impressive per capita giving rose from $797 to $950. In addition to their stellar workplace campaign, Regal also provides exceptional volunteer support of United
Way. Regal’s Chief Operating Officer, Jon Schlemmer serves as Secretary on the Board of Directors. Three Regal employees participated on the 2014 Community Impact Council (CIC) and two others served as members of the CIC Financial Review Team. An enthusiastic group of 45 employees joined in the Day of Caring fun, working on varied projects at the Boy Scouts’ Camp Indian Trails in Janesville. Regal team members also volunteer their time for other local nonprofits, including: Beloit Meals on Wheels, Caritas, Junior Achievement, Salvation Army, and more.
United Way recognizes Regal for their culture of comprehensive responsibility and interconnectivity, as evidenced by their generosity and volunteerism.
