This year DMS is planning for 100% contribution. Teachers at DMS realize the significance of the United Way has on the students. During post planning in May, DMS teachers toured many of the United Way facilities including the Boys and Girls Club, Salvation Army, and the Family Crisis Center. This year’s giving campaign theme is “Be a Game Changer in the Game of Real Life.” If you would like to make a donation, visit online at www.ourunitedway.org.

The middle school has chick-ens! That’s right! A chicken coop is located outside the seventh grade wing. It was built by Team D after the CRCT last year.
The chickens provide a hands on experience covering genetics and sex links traits that are covered in sev-enth grade science class according to Coach Lollis. There are two breeds in the coop, the Bard Plymouth Rock and the Rhode Island Red. The chicken coop is sure to make learning fun in the sev-enth grade. The new eighth grade club, Pass My Plate, went on a field trip to the Chattanooga Conven-tion Center to partici-pate in a Feed My Starving Children Mobile Pack event.
The club packed meals to be sent to 70 countries around the world. After watching a presentation to inform the
group of the global hunger issues, the club got instructions and training on how to pack the meals. There were several positions involved in the packing process: scooping the food into bags, weighing the bags, and zip closing the bags and pack-ing them.
The Boys and Girls Club provided transportation to the event along with volunteer parents.
This new club meets on Friday mornings. It is about helping make this world a better place and helping people that are starving. Eighth grade teacher, Ms. McDonough, is the adviser.

Eighth grader Maria Martinez
won first place in the area bus safety poster contest on September 22.
Sponsored by The Georgia Department of Education, her post-
er will compete at the state competi-
tion in October. The first place winner will win $100.
Kids waiting for the bus safely was the theme of this year’s con-
test. Posters for the contest had to show that kids need and should al-
ways wait in a safe area for a bus.
Maria was inspired by the Magic School Bus series. She said
that she has watched it since she was in elementary school. The colors real-
ly inspired her.
“I felt very competitive be-cause I did this in second grade and
had never won. Now I have finally won,” Maria shared.

The Writer's Inc and Teacher's Voice, the two writing groups that
serve DMS, have teamed up for their first writing project ever: The Note-book Challenge.
In the month of October over 150 students and teachers pledged to fill up a composition notebook with words and pictures in order to de-
velop their literary voices. Prizes will be given for weekly winners (those
who have written the most words each week) and for those who com-plete their notebooks by October 31st.
The groups will also be hosting a reading of works sometime this winter. Stay tuned for more writing events to come.

The Duke Talent Identification Program recognizes students in seventh grade who show high achievement. CRCT scores are analyzed from both 5th and 6th grades. Students had to score at or above the 95th percentile on one of the CRCT subtests. Students who qualified have the opportunity to take the ACT or SAT this school year as 7th graders. They also receive continuing support to guide them as they become college bound. This year’s Duke TIP students are as follows:
Ryan Laruy Ross Valdez Hayes Rollins David Marquez Lindsay Schisler Christopher Gomez Augustino Flammini Bryce Houghton Hannah Miller Megan Robertson Lily Rehberg Alexander Kerr Harrison Jones Itzel Garcia William Stocks Abel Patino Griffin Kirk Brandon Cervantes Austin Burt Stephanie Herrera Holly Potts Kyler Daniel Olivia Golden Isaak Lara Selena Rangel-Piceno Lizzette Quezada Jurnee Harris Jack Haley Sarah Wakeman Courtney Burgin Anna Amos Kimberly Hernandez Selena Paniagua Lily Halverson Leslie Ramirez Kristopher Layfield Mollie Sand Joshua Ayers Areli Guijon Zoie Luffman Noemi Paniagua Juan Zepeda Maldo Angel Cruz Pedro Garcia Cristian Lama Jacob Mitchell Jacob Herald Angel Aguilar Avery Hill Willdelys Carballea Dakota Keener David Hernandez Carla Canchola Veronica Martinez Ansley Keylon Richa Patel Karina Paez Kassandra Sandoval Cole Cooper Alexis Lynch Kevin Cortez Jill Patel Jimena Lopez Flores Jackson Simmons Chloe Wells Tyreese Branham Oscar Chenard Manuel Prieto Page Hartshorn Christopher Montalvo Jacqueline Sanchez Timothy Culver

The coaches alternated be-tween the teams. The IFL gave all play-ers the chance to play and improve. The games also give the coaches the chance to work on plays and instruct players more easily during the actual game. In addition to the Intramural Football League, there are also regular season games against different schools.
