Let’s Make Shane’s Life Easier!!!

• Always Introduce Yourself– We have approximately 300 student-athletes here at Wayne

State, there is one of me, and I’m not great with matching names and faces (please don’t be offended)

– Translation: please don’t assume that I automatically know who you are when you come talk to me, and therefore introduce yourself first

– Use this advice for your instructors as well!!!

• Don’t Assume I Remember Everything– Again, I have the potential to speak to hundreds of people on a

daily basis, and sometimes quick conversations slip out of my memory

– I appreciate you referencing earlier conversations if at all possible to jog my memory to your current need

– Again, use this technique for your instructors as well!!!

Ethical Conduct• Honesty and sportsmanship are vital,

especially if you are ever questioned in an NCAA investigation

• You are not allowed to wager in any manner (cash, prizes or services) on any professional, collegiate or amateur sporting event in a sport that the NCAA sponsors– This includes Fantasy Football and March

Madness Bracket Contests!!!– Also, you cannot bet on any games/activities

you yourself take part in!!!

Ethical Conduct - Gambling• Permissible gambling activities:

– You can take part in activities that have no entry fee

– You can play the lottery– You can bet on horse racing– You can go to a casino and play any

game there (except for a sports book)– When in doubt, ask first

Amateurism• You must be an amateur to be permitted to

compete as an NCAA student-athlete– Not paid for your performance in your sport while

you are a collegiate student-athlete (athletic scholarships do not count)

– Not agree – either in writing or orally – to sign with an agent/become a professional at some point in the future)

• You also cannot use your status as a student-athlete to promote any activities – even if they are for charity/a class assignment – without checking with me first to see if it is acceptable

Seasons of Competition• You get 4 seasons of competition in each sport

you participate in, and 10 semesters to use them in

• Playing in just one contest/only one play uses one entire season of competition – Exception for true freshmen only preseason contests

• For transfers, seasons of competition follow you from school-to-school

• It is possible to use a season-of-competition in one sport in a given year, but not another one (i.e., running in cross country/redshirting in track)

Financial Aid• You can receive money to pay for school through

an athletic scholarship, anything through our Financial Aid office, other WSC departmental scholarships, your family, a job, or a legitimate outside scholarship

• You cannot receive money/meals/services/other benefits directly from boosters or agents (such as clothing/apparel, tattoos, etc.); if you do, you might be risking your permanent eligibility

• Also, you must be eligible to compete to travel with the team in any capacity; otherwise, “extra benefit”

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance

Page 9: 2014-15 NCAA Annual Rules Meeting Shane Drahota Assistant Athletic Director/Internal Affairs Wayne State College Athletic Compliance

Financial Aid• Athletic Scholarships are renewable on a year-

to-year basis only at the NCAA Division II level• During a year, a scholarship can be

cancelled/reduced if one of the following occur:– Become ineligible for competition– Fraudulently misrepresent information to WSC– Engage in serious misconduct that warrants penalties– Voluntary quit the team– Other team/athletic department policies that formally

exist prior to the scholarship being offered to you

Page 10: 2014-15 NCAA Annual Rules Meeting Shane Drahota Assistant Athletic Director/Internal Affairs Wayne State College Athletic Compliance

Financial Aid – Wayne State• WSC has its own Satisfactory Academic

Progress Policy to receive institutional financial aid – including athletic scholarships– Completion Percentage Based Upon Full-Time Enrollment

• Passing at least 12 credit hours: You Are Meeting This Requirement• Passing 9-to-11 credit hours: Will be on FA Warning For The Following

Term• Passing 0-to-8 credit hours: Can be put on FA Suspension For Following

Term

– GPA Component as well (generally speaking, 2.00 GPA or higher to be completely safe)

– If on FA Warning, must pass at least 12 credit hours and have acceptable GPA in next term to get off list; if not, then you will be on FA Suspension

– Possible to be on FA Suspension and eligible for NCAA!!!

Transfer Notes• If you should ever decide you are interested in

the possibility of transferring, you should first discuss this with your head coach

• Per NCAA Bylaw 13.1.1.2, WSC needs to grant you “permission to contact” coaches at other schools

• You need to be academically eligible here in order to be able to compete at your next school

• NSIC Intra-Conference Transfer Policy: cannot compete at an NSIC school in the next year

Social Media• Social Media

– Never post anything you wouldn’t want your parents/ grandparents/future employer to see

– You may face consequences for inappropriate posts

– Generally speaking, avoid inflammatory subjects and bad language

– After contests/events, maybe wait a while before posting anything

– It’s amazing how fast something can get spread around now

New Academic Eligibility Standards

• In your first two years of college, virtually any “new” (i.e., non-repeated) coursework meets Progress-Towards-Degree (PTD)

• Beginning in your third year of college, you must have at least one major officially declared

• At that point, only coursework that meets General Education Blocks 1-4, your major requirements, and/or coursework in a required minor can meet PTD requirements

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance

Page 14: 2014-15 NCAA Annual Rules Meeting Shane Drahota Assistant Athletic Director/Internal Affairs Wayne State College Athletic Compliance

New Academic Eligibility Standards

• GPA Requirement: 2.00 Cumulative• Credit Hour Requirements

– 9: The number of PTD credit hours you must pass each semester (fall or spring terms only) to be allowed to compete the next semester

– 12: The minimum number of credit hours you must be enrolled in order to be able to practice and compete

– 24: The number of PTD credit hours you must pass each school year in order to be eligible to compete the next school year; at least 18 of those credit hours must come during the fall and spring semesters combined

New Academic Eligibility Standards

• What If You Don’t Meet Those Requirements?– Grandfathered In Under “Old” Rules?

• Myself and Registrar’s Office will review to determine if that is a possibility

– Practice?• Even if you are not academically cleared to compete,

you almost always will be permitted to practice

– Scholarship?• Technically, your athletic scholarship can be canceled if

you end up becoming ineligible to compete• At this time, your coach is the person who can make that

final determination about canceling your scholarship should you find yourself academically ineligible to compete

New Academic Eligibility Standards

• Athletic Holds– Placed on your account to ensure you do not fall

below 12 credit hours and therefore participate impermissibly/commit an NCAA violation

– If you ever need to make a change to your schedule, please see Shane Drahota to get your hold lifted (you probably can make the schedule change in his office)

– Holds are for that term only; will not affect you from registering for the next semester, so do not worry if you see the athletic hold on your account when meeting with your academic advisor for pre-registration meeting

Page 17: 2014-15 NCAA Annual Rules Meeting Shane Drahota Assistant Athletic Director/Internal Affairs Wayne State College Athletic Compliance

New Academic Eligibility Standards

• Registration Periods– Because of these new academic requirements,

WSC has slightly altered the registration windows for certain student-athletes to hopefully make it easier for them to get into classes that meet PTD requirements

– Beginning with 2015 Spring Semester registration, any student-athlete entering their fifth semester of college or later will be permitted to register on the first available day of registration

WSC Academic Probation• If you end up on WSC Academic Probation, in

your next regular academic term you need to get your cumulative GPA back above 2.00 to get off this list and remain in school

• If you do not get your cumulative GPA above 2.00, you may be academically suspended from WSC, although it depends upon your semester GPA

• If you are academically suspended from WSC, the suspension lasts for one semester, and you will not be eligible at another four-year school in that time.

NCAA Drug Testing Program• The NCAA is permitted to come to campus at

any time (school year or summer) for random drug tests

• All sports may also be tested at NCAA post-season competition (i.e., regionals/nationals), but not conference playoffs (NSIC)

• New rules are now in effect for NCAA Drug Testing Program that include more testing and potentially differing punishment for “street drugs” as opposed to “performance enhancing drugs”

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance

Page 20: 2014-15 NCAA Annual Rules Meeting Shane Drahota Assistant Athletic Director/Internal Affairs Wayne State College Athletic Compliance

NCAA Drug Testing Program• How to test positive

– Not showing up for the test– Having substances from the NCAA Banned

Drug List in your system• “Street” Drugs (marijuana, heroin, etc.)• Prescribed Medication that our Athletic Training Room

has no record that you need (ADHD medication, etc.)• Unapproved supplement (GNC products, etc.)• Too much caffeine (stimulant)• Performance Enhancing Drugs (steroids, etc.)

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance

Page 21: 2014-15 NCAA Annual Rules Meeting Shane Drahota Assistant Athletic Director/Internal Affairs Wayne State College Athletic Compliance

NCAA Drug Testing Penalties

• First positive test for non-Street Drugs– Lose a year of competition (instead of four

years, you only get three), and have to sit out of competition for 365 days

– Need to apply for reinstatement from the NCAA, including taking and passing a new drug test

– Automatically selected for all future NCAA on-campus/post-season drug tests

• Second positive test– Basically, your collegiate athletic career is over

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance

Page 22: 2014-15 NCAA Annual Rules Meeting Shane Drahota Assistant Athletic Director/Internal Affairs Wayne State College Athletic Compliance

NCAA Drug Testing Penalties

• First positive test for Street Drugs– Lose 50% of a year of competition– Need to apply for reinstatement from the NCAA, including

taking and passing a new drug test– Automatically selected for all future NCAA drug tests

• Second positive test– Lose and charged with a year of competition, and have to

sit out of competition for 365 days– Need to apply for reinstatement from the NCAA, including

taking and passing a new drug test

• Third positive test– Seriously? You got to a third positive test? Yep…you’re

done.

Compliance In The News

Page 24: 2014-15 NCAA Annual Rules Meeting Shane Drahota Assistant Athletic Director/Internal Affairs Wayne State College Athletic Compliance

Compliance In The News• NCAA Division I “Autonomy”

– A total of 65 NCAA Division I schools (members of the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12, SEC, and Notre Dame) are tentatively scheduled to be given the ability to set their own set of rules in certain areas of the Division I legislation, while still competing against all D-I schools

– Immediate impact upon you: none, since that is a Division I situation, and we are Division II

• O’Bannon Trial– Former UCLA men’s basketball player Ed O’Bannon’s trial against

the NCAA essentially boiled down to whether or not student-athletes have the rights to be paid for their name/image/likeness

– Immediate impact upon you: none since regardless of how the lawsuit ends up, it will be in appeals for at least a couple of years

Simple Tips To Remain Compliant

• Always try to ask coach/compliance first, and if not available, when in doubt, decline– Shane Drahota, Assistant AD/Internal Affairs– RC 206– Phone: 402-375-7308 – Email: [email protected] – Twitter: @WSCompliance

• Generally speaking, if a coach says something is okay, it usually is as they tend to check with me
