2009 ITA Northeast RegionAssistant Coach of the Year

John Moreland is in his 14th season as the associate head coach for the Navy men’s tennis program. The Mids have compiled a 204-141 dual match record during his 13 seasons, which includes a record of 67-25 against Patriot League foes. Over the last eight seasons, Navy has posted an overall record of 139-84, a 48-10 mark versus league foes and has won five Patriot League Tournament titles. Moreland was selected as the 2009 ITA Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year following a season in which he helped guide the Mids to an 18-8 record and the third of the team’s four straight NCAA Tournament appearances. He also led the Mid-Atlantic Section Team at the 2013 and ‘14 USTA Boys 18s National Team Championship. After graduating from Washington College (Chestertown, Md.) in 1996, Moreland immediately began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach at Marietta College (Marietta, Ohio). He would return to his alma mater in 1998 as an assistant coach for both tennis programs at the school. During his two years at the school he coached two singles players and four doubles players who earned All-America honors, as well as a pair of ITA regional singles and doubles champions. Moreland would serve as the head coach of the men’s and women’s teams at St. Mary’s College for one season prior to arriving at Navy. He would coach the con-ference women’s rookie of the year during his lone campaign at St. Mary’s. In addition to his Bachelor’s Degree from Washington College, he also earned a Master’s Degree from the school in 2004. Moreland and his wife, Kay, reside in

Jim LaittaVolunteer Assistant CoachFifth SeasonEastern Kentucky ‘88

The 2014-15 season will be Jim Laitta’s fifth as a volunteer assistant coach with the program. Laitta served as an assistant coach at Ohio State during the 2009-10 season prior to his arrival at Navy. The Buckeyes compiled a 35-2 record on the year and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament where they lost to the eventual national champions, USC. Prior to his one-year stint in Columbus, Ohio, Laitta spent 19 seasons as a head coach with the Maryland tennis programs. While coaching the men’s team for all 19 years in College Park, he also served as the head coach of the school’s women’s team for his first 11 years at the school. When he arrived in College Park, neither tennis program received any scholar-ship funding. The women’s team became fully funded in his eighth season while the men’s program reached that level toward the end of his time at the school. Despite those limitations, Laitta led the women’s team to a trio of NCAA Tournament appear-ances (1996, ‘98, ‘99) and saw the men’s program earn a national ranking in each of his final three seasons. Individually, he was tabbed as the ACC Women’s Coach of the Year in 1996. A 1988 graduate of Eastern Kentucky, Laitta began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the Mississippi State women’s team during the 1988-89 season. Mississippi State’s doubles tandem of Claire Pollard and Jackie Holden won the NCAA national championship that season. He then was elevated to head coach for the 1989-90 campaign before departing for Maryland after the conclusion of the sea-son.

The U.S. Naval Academy dedicated and opened the Tose Family Tennis Center and the entire Thornton D. and Elizabeth S. Hooper Brigade Sports Complex during the fall of 2007. The tennis portion of the facility, named after Maurice (‘78) and Terri Tose and their family, features six indoor and six outdoor tennis courts, with the indoor hard courts encompassing some 49,000 square feet. The outdoor courts include the Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium, named after Rick (‘61) and Donna Fluegel and Bill (‘61) and Sandra Moore, while one indoor court has been dedicated in the name of James (‘58) and Rosemary Adkins.

“Our new indoor tennis facility will be a tremendous addition for our team training, as well as a draw for future recruits,” said Navy head coach John Officer. “The facility is first class and already has to be considered one of the finest in the country.”

Located across the Severn River and adjacent to the Naval Academy Golf Course, the 150,000-square foot facility was privately funded and built at a cost of $18.5 million. In addition to the tennis wing of the complex, it also includes hockey and rugby venues, an indoor hitting, chipping and putting facility for the golf team and club members, a fitness center, a restaurant, the pro shop for the golf course, athletic training rooms, numerous locker rooms for all of the Navy and visiting teams, office space for the various coaches and meeting rooms for each of the programs.

The Naval Academy Athletic Association dedicated the Dyer Tennis Clubhouse in ceremonies held in November of 2000.

The facility is named to honor the late Vice Admiral George Dyer (Academy Class of 1919) by his daughter and her husband, Jo and Weston Burnett. Mr. Burnett is also an Academy graduate (‘43) and retired with the rank of Commander. The Burnett’s are longtime supporters of the Navy tennis program.

“This is a suitable facility for not only an excellent ten-nis team, but also a proper way to honor Vice Admiral George Dyer,” said Mr. Burnett. “He was well known throughout Annapolis for his charitable works, and this will only add to his legacy.”

The building includes coaches offices, a racquet string-ing room, locker rooms for both coaches and players, a lounge, a public address system and a viewing deck overlooking the courts.

“We greatly appreciate the generosity of the Burnetts to the Navy tennis program,” said then-Director of Athletics, Jack Lengyel. “The Dyer Tennis Clubhouse will only help to enhance and strengthen an already highly successful program.”

“We are very grateful to the Dyer family for their contribution to the Navy tennis program,” said longtime Navy head coach John Officer. “The Dyer Tennis Clubhouse is one of the finest facilities of its kind in the nation. It is a wonderful building the team will be able to enjoy for many years to come.”

Navy also boasts six outdoor courts adjacent to the 8th Wing of Bancroft Hall.
