What our patrons are saying Reviews and Comments, 2014–2015 Season SEAN CHEN, OCTOBER 19 “Sean Chen’s recital was just the best. What a treat it was to listen to this young artist’s performance. Thanks for choosing this young pianist.” Rosemarie Ihde, Recital Series Subscriber “Wonderful recital today at Pepperdine! I’ll never be able to listen to the Tannhauser Overture again without thinking of your masterful performance. Thank you so much.”—Sandra Binstead Newell THE DUNWELLS, OCTOBER 25 “The Dunwells are a very tight British rock band with some very good songs. They put on a great performance at Pepperdine University in Malibu on Saturday night. This young band is on its way. Well done!” Goldstar Member VERSA-STYLE DANCE COMPANY, JANUARY 25 “That sure was fun! Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the show!” Tiffany Hill, Patron LEO KOTTKE, JANUARY 31 “Thank you so much for a great concert and a wonderful evening.” Ross Altman, Staff Writer at FolkWorks “Very enjoyable. We really like the venue and the surrounding campus is beautiful. It’s great listening to music in such an intimate setting. And, as always, Leo Kottke did not disappoint.” —Patron “Fantastic. I love Leo Kottke and will go see him anywhere. But this venue is perfect. Every seat was great; great atmosphere, a great experience.” —Patron THE MARCY AND ZINA SHOW, FEBRUARY 3 “I loved the master class with Marcy and Zina! This was one of my favorite master classes, because, above everything else, they stressed over and over again to “just be you” in an audition and in performing arts in general. It is so hard hearing time after time that this “business” will kill you and tear you down, but Marcy and Zina’s positivity towards show business was so refreshing. They definitely inspired me to become a better storyteller. After the master class with Marcy and Zina, I felt inspired, worthy, and capable of a life in the performing arts.” —Missy Marion, Pepperdine University Student ROBERTA FLACK, FEBRUARY 6 “Special mention must be made of the Smothers Theatre, an elegant and intimate 450-seat auditorium with excellent acoustics and ample parking...an easy commute from West Hollywood. The venue was a perfect fit for Flack.” —Edge Los Angeles PILOBOLUS, MARCH 25 “We saw Pilobolus Dance Company at Pepperdine University the other night. They continue to delight their audiences with their athleticism, physicality, outstanding choreography, costumes, music, and overall staging. They have started to incorporate short animated films between their works. They are funny and a real crowd pleaser.” Performing Arts Live NORTHWEST DANCE PROJECT, APRIL 18 “The clarity and definition of the high-end sound system combined with the rich alternative music and dance created a mesmerizing performance.” —Goldstar Member “This is one of the most exciting dance companies I’ve seen in a while. Fresh, exciting choreography and extraordinary dancers. A happy surprise.” Goldstar Member “I had the amazing privilege of attending the master class held by Ching Ching Wang of the Northwest Dance Project team. Ching Ching was full of energy and was so encouraging. She particularly complimented us on our willingness “to go for it.” She admired our bravery for trying new stylesonly two people who attended had ever danced the contemporary style before. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to learn from the Northwest Dance Project. I got to see their show on Saturday, and I was blown away. Because we took the master class with them the day before, we were able to connect personally with them as they danced. I am truly grateful for this experience and hope that things like this can continue to happen through the Center for the Arts.” Tanner Heckle, Pepperdine University Student THE OKEE DOKEE BROTHERS, APRIL 25 “What an amazing experience for the whole family! Dear friends, It’s been a joy sharing our 2014-2015 season of performances and exhibitions with you. It’s hard to capture in a few short words and pictures the depth and breadth of our programming, our artists, and our impact in this last year. There are the legendary artists we presented in our intimate Smothers Theatre in 2014-2015, like Tommy Tune and Roberta Flack. There are the emerging artists who gave us exceptional, memorable performances, like SHUFFLE Concert, The Hot Sardines, and the Calidore String Quartet. And then, of course, there are the thousands of Pepperdine students, ARTSReach students, families, and local artists who have come to or participated in our performances, family art days, and outreach programs. In this Year in Review, we hope to give you a little glimpse behind the scenes to see the significance of what we do at the Center for the Arts. This year, we offered our first Spanish language performance in our ARTSReach program. We presented several outstanding master classes by our guest artists to Pepperdine students. And this year’s Parkening International Guitar Competition has received more than 18,000 live stream views throughout the world. This is just a small window into what this year has meant to us. Amazing moments of wonder and joy happen each day here in our three theatres and our museum. They are magical moments—but they don’t happen by magic. They happen because of the generous, thoughtful contributions of people like you—who believe in the arts, believe in this place, and believe in what we do here. Thank you.

Sincerely,Rebecca CarsonManaging Director
