KU Alumni Association

Dear Association Members,

Advocate Communicate Recruit Serve Unite

As an indepen-dent nonprofit organization, the KU Alumni Associa-tion coordinates alumni advocacy in support of the University.

 Informed advo-cates strengthen the University.

We inform alumni of KU news and explain programs and initiatives that help the University fulfill its mission.

We represent the views of alumni to KU administration.

We report the successes of alumni, students, faculty and sta.

Working with KU Admissions, we identify and attract academically talented and diverse students to KU.

We enhance the admissions process and serve as an ongoing resource for legacy students and their families.

We create opportunities for alumni and stu-dents to participate in the life of KU.

We create impact through alumni volunteerism and contributions.

We bring alumni and friends together in support of KU. We keep Jayhawks connected to one another and to their alma mater.

Through the support of dues-paying members, the KU Alumni Association creates impact for the

University of Kansas in five ways. We Advocate, Communicate, Recruit, Serve and Unite.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you this past year. Donors and members of the KU Alumni

Association provided a record number of student and alumni programs and events stretching worldwide.

An engaged and supportive alumni base is vital to the University. Since 1883, alumni voices and active participation—through the KU Alumni Association—have propelled KU far beyond the ranks of many public universities to become recognized as not only the flagship university in our state, but also one of the nation’s premier public institutions for higher learning.

This past year, sta members worked with our national Board of Directors and experts in the field of marketing and communications to define our focus. The result is a set of messages that clearly explain what we do and help us remain a consistently growing, active and powerful community that creates impact for KU.

The Association’s mission remains the same: to strengthen the University of Kansas by informing, mobilizing and supporting Association members and the KU community.

Jayhawks all share the same values—pride in the achievements of KU and alumni, beloved traditions and experiences, and connections to those who share a passion for KU.

Your membership and contributions to the Associa-tion programs and communications truly matter.

Thank you!

Growing up in Great Bend, Allyn Risley, e’72, set his

sights on becoming an engineer, but he didn’t know anyone in the profession until high school, when he met Bob Coshow, e’49, the father of a classmate. Risley credits the late Coshow for his KU education. “I think he made sure I had some oil industry money for tuition and books,” Risley recalls. “He never confessed to me that he had a hand in it, but looking back, the scholarship had his finger-prints all over it. That’s why I became a petroleum engineer.”

When he graduated, Risley weighed a job offer from Texaco in the Midwest and an offer from Phillips Petroleum, which had just made a big oil discovery in the North Sea and needed engineers overseas. For the next 22 years, he worked in Norway, Indonesia, Singapore and the United Kingdom before returning to the United States and ultimately settling in Houston. He also reconnected with KU as an Alumni Association member and volunteer and a member of the School of Engineering Advisory Board.

He served on the Alumni Association’s national

Board of Directors from 2002 to 2007. He and his wife, Jill Bogan Risley, assoc., are now Life Members, contributing annually to the Presidents Club. They also have provided $50,000 to create the Risley Family Texas Programs Endowment.

The Risleys, whose two daughters are KU graduates, take special interest in recruiting KU students from Texas. “Through my involvement with the Alumni Association, I know that if you can get prospective students to visit campus, you’ve probably won a recruit. We thought, ‘Why shouldn’t KU have the opportu-nity to recruit bright, well-round-ed students from Texas?’ That’s

why we supported the programs that the Alumni Association developed. ”

Looking back on his KU years, Risley recalls with gratitude the engineering professors who influenced him: Paul Wilhite, Don Green, Bill Swift and Floyd Preston. But his litany of thanks begins with Coshow, who quietly made it possible for him to attend the University. “Everything I learned at KU was a good foundation for not only for the technical side of my work, but also for developing personal relationships,” he says. “It was all very beneficial to me in my career and in my life. I felt like somebody gave me a hand up, and if I could give others a hand up, that’s a good deal.”

To say Steve Pennington enjoyed his time on the Hill is a bit of an understatement. “Once I was at

KU, it took blasting shells to get me out,” he says. “I was there seven and a half years.”

After growing up in St. Louis and Jefferson City, Pennington, c’72, g’75, crossed the state line to study architecture at KU but eventually turned to art history. He left Lawrence with two degrees and many lifelong friendships. “My KU connections have lasted,” he says. “The best friends I have are from KU and my fraternity.”

Living at the Pi Kappa Alpha house at 1145 Louisiana St., Pennington and his fraternity brothers often went “tunneling,” sneaking into the steam tun-nels beneath campus via the construction site of the future Wescoe Hall. “We just roamed around to see if we could come out in other buildings,” he recalls. “Of course, you had to do it in the spring or fall, because it was too hot in the summer, and the heating system was on in the winter.”

Decades later, his sense of adventure led him to decidedly more upscale, exotic explorations with the Alumni Association’s Flying Jayhawks. On a trip to Portugal, Pennington met Bob, e’57, and Birgit Love, g’99, and they have continued to travel together. “The Flying Jayhawks trips are easy when you are traveling solo,” he says, and friendships and unexpected KU reunions are bonuses. In Greece, one of the KU travel-ers was a fraternity brother. In Scotland, the contin-gent included one of his professors. On an Alaskan

cruise, he ran into his art history mentor, Professor Marilyn Stokstad, who was part of another group.

In addition to the Flying Jayhawks, Pennington (a longtime Alumni Association Life Member thanks to a gift from his parents) supported the Jayhawk Society for many years. In 2013, he became an annual Presidents Club donor, and he has pledged $1.75 million from his estate to create an endowed fundfor the Association.

Retired from his career managing large food ser-vice operations in the health care industry, Pennington lives near the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. His abiding passions for art, architecture and his alma mater are evident throughout his exquisitely renovated mid-century home. Family heirlooms, art and mementos from his KU travels are a feast for the eyes. And he’ll soon make room for another keepsake; he has booked his reservation for Flying Jayhawks trip number nine and counting.

Garden City will always be home to Grant and Kathy Korte Larkin. They lived in the southwest

Kansas community for 23 years. “First and foremost, we loved raising our family there,” says Grant, c’78.

As their four sons grew up, the Larkins also man-aged Grant’s dental practice and represented KU as Alumni Association volunteers. Grant led the Great Plains Network as president and served on the As-sociation’s national Board of Directors from 2005 to 2010. Kathy coordinated the Kansas Honors Program and helped host numerous events. In recent years, the Larkins were heartened to see the University and the Association step up efforts in western Kansas.

“There has been a lot of headway,” says Kathy, n’80. “We saw a big difference over 23 years—and a huge difference in the past decade.”

Both recall visits by Chancellor Hemenway and Chancellor Gray-Little, and they give special credit to Alumni Association leaders Kevin Corbett, c’88; Mike Davis, d’84, g’91; and Heath Peterson, d’04, g’09. “I cannot sing their praises enough,” Grant says. “They always made the time to come out there.”

As KU became more visible, local Jayhawks began to make their presence known. “There became this groundswell because of Kevin and Mike and Heath’s enthusiasm,” Grant says.

“There was an untapped resource of volunteers,” Kathy adds. “They needed a voice, and when they had a venue and a platform, they were proud. It was cool to see the network explode.”

To continue that trend, the Larkins, who are Life Members, contributed $25,000 through the Presi-dents Club to create the Larkin Family Kansas Alumni

Endowment, which helps sustain the Association’s programs in western Kansas. “We have such love for our University, and we thought, ‘Let’s keep this momentum going,’” Grant says.

The Larkins take special interest in student recruit-ment. “We had a deep desire to introduce KU to a lot of students who didn’t know much about it,” Kathy says. “Now KU is coming to them.”

And though their own sons knew plenty about KU, Kathy says she and Grant “tried not to have tunnel vision” when the boys were making their college choices. The older three—Jeff, c’06; Tom, a’09; and Brian, e’11— all visited other universities before land-ing in Lawrence. “Then we got to our fourth son, and I said, ‘Andy, do you want to make some campus visits?’ And he said, ‘Seriously, Mom? Why would I do that?’”

After Andy, c’15, headed east, his parents followed, moving to Lawrence in 2012. Grant now has a dental practice in McLouth, but they maintain strong ties to their longtime home. “We are so grateful for every-thing KU has done in western Kansas,” Kathy says. “We really are.”
