The Community Fund, the Foundation’s onlyunrestricted fund, is an endowment that enables theWalker Area Community Foundation to respondstrategically to community issues as they arise. Basedon our knowledge and research, the Community Fundsupports a wide variety of subject areas andorganizations through a competitive grants processand other special initiatives.

The year 2013 marked our 18th year as aCommunity Foundation. Eighteen years of gatheringpeople, funds and organizations together; eighteenyears of growing through prudent management andcollaborations with other agencies; and, eighteenyears of grantmaking to respond to the most pressingneeds of the community.

In 1995, following a suggestion from John T. Oliver,Jr., Pat Willingham and the Community HealthSystems Board set aside $6 million in proceeds fromthe sale of the Walker RegionalMedical Center to begin theendowment for the Walker AreaCommunity Foundation. Thisdonation has served as a nucleus for funding worthycauses that might otherwise golacking.

Other community leaders involvedin the formation of the foundationwere the late J. George Mitnick andLarry Drummond. Together, Oliver,Willingham, Mitnick and Drummond

created a Foundation that serves as a cornerstone onwhich solutions to our community’s greatest problemsare built.

Since 1995, the Community Foundation has grownfrom the original $6 million to more than $24 millionin assets due to the wise investments by the estatemanagers selected by the Board of Directors and thepurchase and renovation of the Bankhead House &Heritage Center, but mostly because of thefaithfulness of our donors.

The coming years are times of even greater promiseand the Community Fund will be the catalyst for realcommunity change. If you have a desire to be part ofthe future of Walker County, please call 302-0001,visit our website at www.wacf.org or come by theFoundation’s office at 611 8th Avenue, Jasper,Alabama.

To Give and to Receive

This partnership with Walker County has made me a better personbecause I am a man with purpose and desire to make a difference. I’vehad so many emotional highs and lows throughout this experience, which is just… weird, because I don’t get emotional about anything. Andit wasn’t until I was several weeks in that I realized the reason I was soaffected by the work I was doing was because I rediscovered whatpassion was. It sounds overly cliché, however, I do think that everyoneloses sight of themselves at times and need a little direction to get backon track. My direction came in the form of the people that surrounded me.

There are some people that just know that they’re doing what they’resupposed to be doing and they provided me with much neededperspective on challenges that I’ve faced ever since I entered college –problems that are often times so distracting that I lose all focus, andseemingly, over the course of my eighteen years on this Earth, I’d lostsight of what truly makes me happy. But, I rediscovered it this summer.I perform community service with a heart, rather than with an

insincere assumption that I’m doing it simply because it’s the rightthing to do. You get out of the experience what you put into it. Theinternship is so much more than serving a struggling community – it’sabout learning where you stand in this world when you’re placedoutside your comfort zone. You discover so much about yourself andyou learn that you can’t be prepared for everything. There are somany unadvertised gems to this experience that are best served inmaintaining a secret – as it makes the discovery of them so muchworthwhile. However, the only way to even begin the process ofuncovering them is by making the decision to dedicate eight weeks of your life to the unpredictable.

To the Walker Area Community Foundation:

There is so much to learn from giving. The term “It is better to givethan to receive” means more after you lose someone in your familywho is a giver. Who can take her place? Well, being on the receivingend, it is a hard act to follow. There is so much displacement thathappens every day, all around us. I will always remember my nephewwho received a fruit cake from Mr. Drummond when he lost his housefrom the April 27th tornado and he has mentioned numerous times thatit was the best fruitcake he ever had. The long lapses in thought anddespair carries a person through hunger they do not even realize untilthe need is taken away by a gift. How do you say thank you to foundations who care enough to help

put lives back together? Only God can appropriately repay. It hastaught me that while I could not possibly give millions, I can manage togive a little here and a little there. If we all stand together to work witheach other, a solid foundation will form in order to build. When someone gives me something, I think - WOW, they love me

this much - whatever or whoever it is. After attending your AnnualLuncheon and seeing the “Giving” video I realized that we must openour eyes… that whether anyone else recognizes it or not, there issomething we all can do to pull together and help each other in ourlittle communities. That is what it is all about.I know that being from Cordova, much like everywhere, some have

no idea who their benefactors are but let me be at least one who hasseen the change, already for the better even though, at first it seemed alost cause. Thank you could never adequately cover your graciousgenerosity toward us. So, I will just say this; bless you for your manycauses and cures. Good Job!

Jack Allen2013 Chairman, Board of Directors

FOR THE BENEFIT OF YOUR COMMUNITY.FOR ALL TIME...FOR ALL PEOPLE...

When I began my term as Chairman of the Walker Area Community Foundation threeyears ago, I followed in the steps of Mr. John T. Oliver, with whom I have had the pleasureof working for 35 years and who has done so much for our entire community. He and asmall group of people began with $6 million and built a strong foundation for our nonprofitorganizations and community. That original gift has now grown to nearly $24 million inassets and will benefit our community forever and ever.

Because of the dedicated Board of Directors and staff, the Community Foundation hasgrown financially but also in our ability to make change in the community. From educatingyounger generations on the importance of giving back to their community to building anappreciation for the heritage we can all be proud of, this Foundation is making a difference in Walker County.

I hope you enjoyed reading the letters from Cameron and Kathern. I think they are testaments to the impact the Foundation andits staff have on both the nonprofit organizations we serve as well as those that give their charitable gifts to us. It is important tous to be good stewards of the money entrusted to us by our donors and we appreciate the trust you place in us.

My term as Chairman has come to a close. It was the greatest honor I’ve had professionally. This Foundation does so muchgood in the community and I have a tremendous amount of respect for the steps our Board has taken to plan for the future. Youwill be hearing soon about Generation Walker: A Foundation for the Future, which is the Foundation’s strategic plan for the nextfive years.

The Foundation is pleased to have Eddie Jackson serve as its third chairman and have the utmost confidence in his ability to leadthis us through the next three years of great initiatives and giving.
