DOCENT PROGRAM

CLASSROOM ENHANCEMENTS

The CSO Docent Program prepares students for an enjoyable and engaging experience at Once Upon a Symphony, Very Special Promenades and Youth Concerts. Using free preparatory materials produced by the Institute for Learning, Access and Training at the CSO, students will explore the repertoire to be performed on the selected concert, learn relevant music fundamentals and talk about appropriate concert etiquette.

DOCENT VISITS ARE FREE! Please inquire about a Docent visit on your ticket order form. For more information, please visit cso.org/docentprogram.

The ORCHESTRA EXPLORERS® curriculum offers multidisciplinary lesson plans and a Chicago Symphony Orchestra recording designed especially for kindergarten through third grade classroom teachers without a background in music. Curriculum materials introduce students to the musicians of the CSO while supporting instruction in a variety of subjects. Three volumes of materials are currently available: Stravinsky’s The Firebird, Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony and Copland’s Appalachian Spring. Orchestra Explorers materials are available free to teachers in the Chicago metropolitan area. Please visit cso.org/orchestraexplorers to learn more and to request materials.

DREAM OUT LOUD utilizes the unique individual stories of Chicago Symphony Orchestra members to inspire young musicians to continue their musical studies and to stick with it during periods of challenge or frustration. Dream Out Loud offers a set of eye-catching posters, print and video profiles that tell each musician’s story. For more information, or to request a free resource kit, please visit cso.org/dreamoutloud.

9–12OPEN REHEARSALS & BEYOND THE SCORE®

OPEN REHEARSALS Provide your students with an up-close and personal look at how the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, guest conductors and guest artists prepare for a concert by attending a CSO Education Open Rehearsal. Intended for students in grades 9-12 with a serious interest in music, each rehearsal lasts approximately 2.5 hours and features pieces to be performed that same week as part of the CSO main stage series. Following the rehearsal, students are invited to participate in a question and answer session with the conductor, guest artist and/or select members of the CSO.

During the 2013/14 season, four rehearsals will be offered on an intermittent basis. For more information and to request admission, please visit cso.org/educationopenrehearsals.

The number of students to be admitted is limited and reservations are required. Requests are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

BEYOND THE SCORE Take your students Beyond the Score with one of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s multi-media explorations of some of the most important pieces in the classical repertory. Through historical narrative with live actors, musical excerpts, and artfully designed visual illustrations, Creative Director Gerard McBurney creates a uniquely imaginative, educational concert experience. Following the presentation of Beyond the Score and an intermission, the audience returns to the hall with a new-found understanding to hear the work in full.
