Protests in East Flatbush, stemming from the shoot-ing of 16-year-old KimaniGray by police officers onMarch 9, grew calmer overthe weekend, after an ex-plosion of violence onWednesday, March 13, re-sulted in 45 arrests andone police officer injured.
City CouncilmanJumaane Williams, whohad come under fire forcomments made accusing“outsiders” of inciting un-prepared teens to vio-lence, directed most of theprotesters on Friday nightinto a nearby church for acommunity discussion.
Reports of a successfulYouth EmpowermentSeminar on Saturday pre-ceded another night ofprotests. This time, reportsindicated police outnum-bered protesters by 4 to 1.
Conflicting reports ofGray’s involvement ingangs have piled up, fromhis mother telling WNYC
she doesn't think her soncarried a gun, but wasn'tsure, to reports ofFacebook photos where
Gray is making gang signs.Experts on city gangs
dismissed the social me-dia activity as indicationsthat Kimani's gang in-volvement would havebeen low-level; whileteachers spoke of a youngman who "acted tough"but was serious aboutmoving his family into abetter neighborhood.
“He traveled over anhour each day from EastFlatbush. ... The year and ahalf we had with Kimaniallowed us to get to knowhis best self," UrbanAssembly School of Designand Construction princi-pal Matt Willoughby said.

GOP, president differ inflexibility on tax reformLeading congressionalRepublicans said yester-day a broad deal withPresident Barack Obamaon deficit reduction andentitlement reform re-mains possible but dif-fered over potentialflexibility on taxes, withthe House speaker andbudget leader not bend-ing.
The top Republican inCongress, House ofRepresentatives SpeakerJohn Boehner, and BudgetCommittee ChairmanPaul Ryan also agreedwith Obama’s assessmentthat the United States wasnot currently in a debt cri-sis, but that one waslooming.
Ryan, whose budgetproposal last week wasdismissed by Democrats, quoted former RepublicanPresident Ronald Reagan’s1980s view of dealingwith the Soviet Union, saying that with Obama,
he believes in the policyof “trust but verify.”
Obama has engaged ina couple of weeks of out-reach to Republican andDemocratic lawmakers —some have called it a
“charm offensive” — butthe prospects of a largedeficit reduction deal bymidyear remained un-clear.
Obama is advocatingmore tax increases on the
wealthiest Americans cou-pled with new spendingcuts to help curb deficitsthat have topped $1 tril-lion in each of the pastfour years.
Such a deal could in-clude curbing spendingon costly entitlement pro-grams like the SocialSecurity retirement pro-gram and the Medicarehealth insurance programfor the elderly and dis-abled.
Speaking on “Fox NewsSunday,” Senator BobCorker, a TennesseeRepublican, said: “There,by the way, is a chance ona deal. I know the presi-dent is saying the rightthings. And we have anopportunity over the nextfour to five months.”
Corker underscoredthe need for Democraticwillingness on entitle-ment reform and signaledRepublican flexibility ontaxes. REUTERS

Deal likely tokeep US eliteforces in keyAfghan province
KABUL. Afghan and U.S. of-ficials are working on acompromise deal to allowAmerican special forces tostay in a strategically keyprovince near the capital inreturn for full Afghan con-trol of a controversial jail.
President HamidKarzai’s decision to expelspecial forces from Wardakprovince has angered U.S.defense officials who wor-ry their exit could allow in-surgents to strengthentheir presence in the area.
U.S. special forcestasked with fighting theTaliban were scheduled toleave the province a weekago, but U.S. and Afghanofficials have told Reutersthey are still operating.

Pell Grantsand thefuture ofcollege The House BudgetCommittee is debatingfreezing the maximumPell Grant award — nowset at $5,645 — for yearsto come, along withopening them up to fu-ture cuts. F. KingAlexander is thepresident of CaliforniaState University, LongBeach, and he believesthat the government-funded Pell Grants arevital to an economicallydiverse student body.
Are you concerned aboutthe status of Pell Grantsfor future students?Yes. I think we lost a sig-nificant battle two yearsago when Congress cutPells for summer school.Summer classes are veryimportant to workingstudents and poorstudents. So, we’ve
already had a cut in Pell.We can’t afford that at atime when tuition is ris-ing because of statereductions. Pell Grants cover just afraction of the tuition at
an expensive school. Why doesn’t the Pell ad-just based on the cost oftuition? That seems like a greatidea on the face of it.However, if Pells weresignificantly higher, you’d run the risk of in-creasing the incentivefor institutions to esca-late their prices. Ourcampus charges $6,500per year in tuition andfees. Communitycolleges hover around$3,500. The nationalpublic university averageis around $8,200. So Pelldoes cover about two-thirds the cost for a vastmajority of students. What kinds of studentsget Pell Grants? To me, the beauty of Pellis that it’s weighted onincome, not price. Statestudent-aid programstend to be price-sensitive, which gives ad-vantages to institutionsthat raise their prices. On my campus, we have13,000 Pell students. Ifyou give one studentfour times the Pell of an-other, you’ll deny threestudents access tocollege.

University of St. Thomasprofessor Stephen D.Brookfield is perhaps themost prolific writer onadult higher education inthe U.S. His books use per-sonal experience to fleshout his teaching philoso-phy. Brookfied’s latest,“Powerful Techniques forTeaching Adults,” takes alook at power dynamics.
“Power is everywherein the classroom. You can’tavoid it,” he says, from hisoffice in Saint Paul, Minn.“So I thought, instead ofwriting a book that’s fullof these approaches —which is probably whatpeople are expecting —let’s examine how thesepower dynamics skew the
way teaching techniquesare experienced by stu-dents.”
“Powerful Techniques”touches on a number ofconcepts Brookfield haswritten about before: de-veloping critical thinking, facilitating discussion, uti-lizing the creative arts. Butthis time the author em-phasizes the adjustmentshe has made to his teach-ing style due to notions ofpower and trust.
Though Brookfield isstill a believer in student-controlled, self-directedlearning, he now intro-duces the concept withmore than a touch of cau-tion.
“If I’m asking people to
make decisions about thecurriculum, or I’m involv-ing them in setting up thegrading system, one of theresponses I often get is:‘You’re playing a gamewith us and we don’tknow what your agendais,” he explains. “So now Ibegin by saying, ‘Here arethe non-negotiable thingsabout the class; here arethe things I want you todecide; and here are placeswhere we can negotiate.’By being less naive aboutus all having the samepower, I’m able to gain astudent’s trust and buildsomething from there.”

“One of thebiggest incentivesto join themilitary is the 100percent tuitionguarantee. Wedon’t make muchmoney, so tuitionassistance is a bigbenefit recruitersuse to get peopleto join themilitary. Under the gun:Spending cuts hurtmilitary educationFor Airman First ClassStephen Sinatra, the budg-et cuts prompted by dead-lock in Washington haveturned his plans upsidedown. Sinatra, who is inthe U.S. Air Force stationedin Washington, D.C., is tak-ing online college classesthanks to a tuition assis-tance program for mem-bers of the military thathas been halted as a mon-ey-saving move.
“I don’t make muchmoney,” Sinatra says. “Tobe able to utilize this mon-ey to go to school and bet-ter myself, it helps a lot. That’s almost what keepsme to be motivated tokeep going in the mili-tary.”
Comments left on mili-tary message boards andFacebook show wide-spread disappointmentwith the sudden termina-tion of the tuition assis-tance program. It is not apart of the military con-tract, like the G.I. Bill for
veterans benefits, but tu-ition assistance is consid-ered an incentive to enlist.
“I have seen a lot of peo-ple who have lost their mo-tivation to be in themilitary when they takeaway the one perk thatpeople seem to enjoy,”Sinatra says.
Several colleges havemoved to defer tuitioncharges for the coming
term to help militarymembers who are alreadyenrolled. Two senators —one Democrat, oneRepublican — have intro-duced legislation to bringback the tuition assistance.
Students who have al-ready enrolled in classesusing the tuition assis-tance program will be al-lowed to complete them, according to a memo fromthe Army announcing theprogram’s cancelation.
“This suspension is nec-essary given the significantbudget execution chal-lenges caused by the com-bined effects of a possibleyearlong continuing reso-lution and sequestration,”the Army memo says. “TheArmy understands the im-pacts of this action andwill reevaluate should thebudgetary situation im-prove.” The Marines, AirForce and Coast Guardhave also suspended theirtuition assistance pro-grams. Things looked pretty darkfor Lil Wayne on Friday:TMZ reported that the“Lollipop” rapper was in acoma and being read hislast rites at Cedars-SinaiMedical Center in L.A. aftersuffering multipleseizures. But don’t worry!“TMZ was so off base,” asource close to the startells Us Weekly. “Wayne isfine.” The rapper took toTwitter a few hours afterTMZ’s report to confirmhis well-being: “I’m goodeverybody. Thx for theprayers and love.” His repalso told Us Weekly that“Wayne is doing well.”
Ah yes, it was all a mis-understanding. Wayne was“just coming down off thehigh” from sizzurp, thesource says, and that he’s“not close to death or any-thing.”
Sizzurp, for those notwell-versed in recreationaldrugs, is “a highly addic-tive, narcotic concoction ofprescription-strengthcough syrup, sugary sodasand hard candies, typicallysipped out of Styrofoamcups,” the drug barons atUs Weekly explain. Thecough syrups containcodeine and promet-hazine, which leads towhat the mag calls a“sleepy high.” The kids
these days enjoy it becauseit’s cheap and easy tomake, Us Weekly adds.
Hey, at least Wayne ishonest: If we have to hearanother report of a star be-ing treated for “exhaus-tion,” we’re going to lose it.
We first started questioning Lil Wayne’s decision-making
skills when we saw those facial tattoos.

As SXSW comes to aclose, the crowdedstreets of Austinwill return to a
more relaxed status quo.But the musical party thatbegan here last Tuesdaywill have a rippling effectover the next few monthsas members of the pressshare their favorite find-ings of the festival and letthe public in on their dis-coveries. After seeing closeto 100 bands, here are afew of the best.
Metro’s list of “must-see” acts published lastweek was spot-on, if I dosay so myself. Nick Caveput on an epic set in a rareoutdoor performance.Thurston Moore’s ChelseaLight Moving played theirmost intriguing gig, withskateboarders riding a half-pipe in the background.King Tuff proved he’s eventougher live than onrecord, while Jim Jamestook people by surprisewith his new direction.
Our award for the BestNew Foreign Act goes toIndians. With music ema-nating from the mind ofCopenhagen’s Soren LokkeJuul, he says he only hadthree songs to his name be-fore signing to the 4AD la-bel last year. “I never even
thought about making arecord,” he said after oneshow. “I just made songsbecause I felt like I neededto express something.”Playing eight shows in fivedays, Juul performed witha band, filling in hissomber synth songs withshimmering atmosphericsand heavy-handed elec-tronic drums.
The Most EnergeticShow was delivered by
Pangea at a club called theVolstead. Pangea wasn’teven on the schedule, butword got out and the smallroom was packed andpleased. Playing a set some-where between punk andmetal, they varied speedsbut always remainedheavy. The drummer hit sohard it didn’t seem like theskins could sustain thebeating. The crowd fol-lowed along with the pas-
sionate performance bymoshing and crowd-surf-ing. At one point, thespeakers almost fell over.I’m pretty sure that’s notsupposed to happen any-more. But it did. And it wasspecial — but is not for thefaint of heart.
The Best Overall NewBand is Wildcat! Wildcat!. Ihad a feeling about thembased on the name alone. And wandering into one of
their many shows, I wastaken. A four-piece, eachwith a mic, two key-boardists, bass and drums, the band lies somewherebetween rock and electro.Their four-part vocal falset-to harmonies make themstand out and add warmthto their summery sound. While the members haveknown each other sincethey were kids and eachhave played music togeth-
er before, the band only be-gan last year and have onlyreleased two songs. One ofthe hardestworking bandsat the festival, they played10 shows in five days andseemed to be having morefun than any other band Isaw. They also covered theTears for Fears song“Everybody Wants to Rulethe World.” Sure, every-body wants to, but theseguys just might get to.

Long gone are the days of walking the streets ofAustin with a printed schedule and a highlighter. Inan atmosphere that is already all about sensory over-load, technology ruled SXSW this year. Parties wereannounced via Twitter, there was an app forschedules and oftentimes when you got to the showsmost of the audience members had their heads downto text or tweet. Also, if you didn’t have a platinumbadge, the only way to get into the Prince show wasto have a Samsung Galaxy phone and complete ascavenger hunt. Prince wasn’t the only megastar toget Austin buzzing. Justin Timberlake, Green Day,Stevie Nicks and Dave Grohl also took part in SXSW,performing exclusive shows in much smaller venuesthan they usually play.

Dick Cheney refersto himself as the“most consequen-tial” vice president
in American history, and anew, incredibly candiddocumentary by filmmak-er R.J. Cutler (“A PerfectCandidate,” “TheSeptember Issue”) delvesinto just what those conse-quences might be —though Cheney quicklyproves himself to be notone for reevaluation. Afterpremiering the film at theSundance Film Festival ear-lier this year, Cutler bringshis calm and levelheadedportrait of the divisive po-litical figure to Showtime.
Was it difficult to set asidewhatever opinions youmight have had of Cheneyto make this film?I mean, of course I have
opinions about him. I havemy politics, but this isn’treally a film about politics— from my perspective.I’ve made films about peo-ple whose politics I agreewith and I’ve made filmsabout people whose poli-tics I don’t agree with. Inthis case, I’m exploring theman but I’m also tellinghis story from what I be-lieve will be a rich andvaluable historical per-spective as time passes. Somy politics are kind of be-side the point — really be-side the point. I’m notinterested in films aboutmy politics. I’m interestedin Dick Cheney. I could notpossibly care less about thepolitics of a documentaryfilmmaker. I was curiousabout who he was andhow he thinks and whatled him to the decisions he
made and how he acquiredthe power that he had andwhat he did with that pow-er once it was acquired. What do you think of themanner in which Bush andCheney have, in a way, retreated from the publicstage since leaving office?[Former] Vice PresidentCheney has not shied awayfrom the public eye andhas not resisted the temp-tation to opine on the cur-rent administration and itspolicies — and its relation-ship to the policies he sup-ported when he was inoffice. He appears to bebreaking the mold interms of that return to cen-ter stage. We do live in amoment where the oppor-tunity to return to centerstage is far more presentthan it was eight years, 12years, 16 years ago, 20
You don’t know DickDirector R.J. Cutler discusses making his documentary ‘The
World According to Dick Cheney’ On sitting down with thecagey former veep and keeping his own politics out of the way
Q&A
What was the biggestsurprise for you in yourdealings with Cheney forthis film?
I think I was most struckby the manner in whichhe discussed honor andduty. He felt that whenput up against eachother, there’s no questionthat duty trumps honorand that in fact the de-bate is a nonstarter. I’dunderstood honor to bea defining characteristicof our country and theway we choose to act sothat we are understoodin the world. And whenCheney dismissed honoras a value, I was reallyvery struck by that.

years ago. But even in thatcontext, I think it’s inter-esting how much he’s stay-ing in the fray. But youknow, there are no laws orrules that say you can’t re-main in the fray. [FormerPresident] Bill Clinton hasremained in the fray in adifferent way. He hasn’t re-ally retreated. FormerPresident [George W.] Bushseems to be laying prettylow in the way that formerpresidents historicallyhave done. I know he’s giv-en a speech or two, but Idon’t really feel like we’re
hearing from him in theway we’ve consistently[heard] from Cheney. There was a lot ofconjecture about Cheneywhile he was in office, especially in the secondterm, from social critics andcomedians. Was it hard toavoid that level ofdiscourse? It’s not at all difficult toavoid the level of discoursebecause I focused on seri-ous-minded people whoexamined his life and ca-reer and had written ex-tensively about it. Every life is an un-folding story withbright spots, lowpoints and plot
twists. When people losehope, it is usually becausethey mistake difficultchapters in their lives forthe entire plotline, andthey overlook importantlife lessons that such chap-ters have to offer.
Take the 2006 block-buster, “The Pursuit ofHappyness.” The true rags-to-riches film chroniclesexactly 28 chapters in thelife of Chris Gardener, asingle father who battleshomelessness and ridicu-lous odds to earn a covetedentry-level position at amajor San Francisco bro-kerage firm. The genius ofthis film is that 27 of thechapters, wrapped intogritty little headings like“Locked Out,” “BeingStupid” and “Riding theBus,” are about the“Pursuit” part of the equa-tion. Only the last chapter,as the narrator points out,is titled “Happiness.”
If Gardener had gottenstuck in one of these chap-ters, misinterpreting hisdifficulties as a never-end-ing story of struggle andvictimization, he mayhave failed to muster thecourage and resilience tosucceed. Consequently, the film might have beencalled “Giving Up,” and itsmessage about triumphover adversity would havebeen lost.
Of course, it’s so mucheasier to accept the mean-ing of difficult chaptersand heart-wrenchingscenes when it’s happen-ing to someone else, and
we’re virtually assured of apositive outcome (after all,the film’s title suggests aHollywood happy ending).
But what if youcould see your lifeas a major motionpicture? Imagine
that you’re the main char-acter and the plotline isabout “a talented youngprofessional battling un-employment.” Ask your-self, “What is this chapterabout?” Give it a name, and see if you can write aparagraph summary inthe third-person voice, asif you were a movie criticgiving a positive review. While this may seemcounterintuitive, psycho-logical studies show thatpeople are more likely to
view their lives favorablyat a distance than upclose.
Conflicts in novels andfilms shape the plot andmove the story forward, presenting the main char-acter with opportunitiesto overcome obstacles, leading to epiphanies, lifelessons and psychologicalrebirth. After writing thesummary, ask yourself,“What life lessons can thischaracter learn from thistime? Who are his sup-porting characters andhow can they help him? What tools does he needto move to the next chap-ter? Where has he foundhope in the past and howmight he find it now?”
Once you have identi-fied the chapters and deci-phered their meaning, youmay find it easier to weavethe fragments of your lifeinto a meaningful narra-tive that values the subtle, personal victories thatbuild character. This canhelp you embrace life’s in-evitable trials as purpose-ful experiences that won’tlast forever.

British soldiers who haveserved in Iraq andAfghanistan — particularlyyoung men and those whohave seen active combat —are more likely to commitviolent crimes than theircivilian counterparts, ac-cording to research pub-lished on Friday.
The study of almost14,000 British soldiers de-ployed to Iraq andAfghanistan is the first toexamine the link betweenmilitary service and vio-lent crime by using officialcriminal records.
Researchers said thefindings could help mili-tary officials improve theirrisk assessment of vio-lence among servingand ex-military person-nel.
They stressed that al-though the study points
to a serious problem forthose affected, it does notmean all ex-soldiers willbecome violent criminals.
“Just as with post trau-matic stress disorder, thisis not a common outcomein military populations,”says study leader SimonWessely, co-director of theCentre for Military HealthResearch at King's CollegeLondon.
“Overall you must re-member that of those whoserve in combat, 94 per-cent of those who come
back will not offend.”The study found
that those in combatroles were more than50 percent more like-ly than those in non-combat roles tocommit assaults orthreaten violence af-

From the lectern atWharton BusinessSchool to the can-dy-colored halls of
Google — not to mentionan upcoming trip to a mil-itary base in Afghanistan— Stuart Diamond is aninja master of negotiat-ing. His book “GettingMore: How You CanNegotiate to Succeed inWork and Life” teaches
how to get the most fromtheir interactions. Dia-mond says the key to ne-gotiation is to have a goodconversation. So that’swhat we did, and here iswhat we learned:
Focus on your skillsExperience is not whypeople give you a job. It’sall about skills. I encour-age people to figure outnot what experience theyhave, but what skills theycan offer — it’s the skillthe employer wants. Ionce counseled a doctorabout moving into a fi-nancial consulting career. He had leadership abili-ties, he was organized andhe had a vision. He said,“You can teach me the fi-nancial stuff I need toknow,” and he was right.People assume experiencemeans skills, but itdoesn’t.
It’s just a talkA good negotiation is justa conversation. The lessstressful it is, the better.
When somebody is sittingacross the table looking atyou, they’re thinking,“Can I stand this personevery day?” It’s not agame or a dance — it’sjust a talk.
Think about next yearA lot of people think thatit’s important to get thebest salary you can goingin. I don’t think that’strue. It’s important to geta commitment for them
to pay you more if youadd value going forward. The salary they’re hiringyou for is budgeted — butpeople are more willingto pay out of additionalfuture revenues. Whatwill they pay you nextyear? People hardly everask that, but they should.
Know what they wantFinding out the picturesin their head is the mostimportant way to getmore. My first question toan employer is: “Why areyou looking for some-body?” I want to knowwho they are and what’sin their head. I once ap-plied [for a job] at MorganStanley. I said: What crite-ria do you use to hire peo-ple? The interviewerreplied, “What criteriashould I use?” I listed allthe things I was good atand she hired me! Themore you know about theother party, the more youknow what to do.

BRACKET BREAKDOWNLouisville lands No. 1 overall seed Zags, Kansas, Indiana
the other No. 1s Big East leads conferences with eight teamsThe NCAA men’s basket-ball tournament field of 68was announced yesterdayand, for once, much of thesnub controversy seemedsubdued.
The four No. 1 seeds areLouisville (29-5), Kansas(29-5), Gonzaga (31-2) andIndiana (27-6). TheCardinals are the top over-all seed and landed in theMidwest region(Indianapolis), meaningthey get to play the firstfew rounds in their ownbackyard. No. 4 Saint Louis(27-6, champions ofAtlantic-10), and No. 3Michigan State (25-8), ap-pear to pose the biggestchallenge to Louisvillemaking a return trip to theFinal Four.
The top opening gameduring the tourney’s firsttwo days could very well beNo. 8 Colorado State vs. No.9 Missouri, two teams thatdominate on the glass.Higher seeds on upset alertshould be No. 5 OklahomaState, which faces No. 12Oregon (who won the Pac-12 tournament) and No. 7Creighton, which opposesNo. 10 Cincinnati.Creighton junior forwardDoug McDermott (23.1ppg, 7.5 rebs) might be the
best player in the countryand could have landed theWooden Award if his teamdidn’t have a tailspin latein the regular season.
Gonzaga has a nice pathto the Sweet 16 in the Westregion (Los Angeles), start-ing in Salt Lake City, al-though a matchup with
No. 5 Wisconsin looms andthe Badgers are always atough out. No. 2 Ohio Stateand No. 3 New Mexico alsoappear on a collisioncourse.
Once again, an 8-9 gameprovides a great matchupwith Pittsburgh taking onWichita State — two un-der-the-radar, but very sol-id, teams. No. 10 Iowa Statehas a great chance to beatNo. 7 Notre Dame andmaybe this is the year thatNo. 11 Belmont finally getsa win (they’ll meet No. 6Arizona).
The Jayhawks were re-warded with arguably thetoughest region (South), interms of the other highseeds. Kansas begins inKansas City and No. 2Georgetown, No. 3 Florida,No. 4 Michigan and No. 5VCU all have the capabilityto reach the Final Four.
Michigan vs. SouthDakota State should behighly entertaining as BigBlue sophomore guardTrey Burke (19.2 ppg, 6.7asts), the likely WoodenAward winner, takes onsenior guard Nate Wolters(22.7 ppg, 5.8 asts, 5.6 rebs).

3The SEC got onlythree teams in

There’s a newLarkin to knowThe Hoosiers looked likethe top team for much ofthe season, but they keptlosing when they wereranked No. 1. They are inthe East region and willstart things off inDayton, Ohio.
Other than No. 2Miami, which had a le-gitimate case for a No. 1seed, the rest of the Eastlooks pretty weak. It isIndiana’s to lose, butthere could be upsets.
No. 11 Bucknellmeets No. 6 Butler, No.14 Davidson could scareNo. 3 Marquette and No.10 Colorado is basically apick ’em against No. 7Illinois. Iona heads back to danceThe Gaels made it into lastyear’s BigDance as liter-ally the lastteam. This yearthey took careof business themselves bywinning the MAAC.
To do so they had toeliminate local rivalManhattan. Next comes a
big step up in competitionas Iona secured a No. 15seed and a matchup withWest Region No. 2 OhioState on Friday.
Last year they wereplaced in a play-in game, which they lost to BYU be-fore the real dance even be-gan. They have a differentpath now.
“This year, it’s a lot moremeaningful,” senior andHarlem native Lamont
“Momo” Jones toldreporters after the MAACtitle win. “If you told menine months ago that thiswas going to be the case, Iprobably wouldn't have be-lieved it.”
Jones leads the teamwith 23 points per game. He’ll be matched up withBig Ten Defensive Player ofthe Year Aaron Craft in oneof the best battles of theRound of 64. METRO

Michigan State last season in the NCAAs.
Blackbirdsbecomingregulars
LIU keeps dominating NEC,but NCAA committee doesn’tcare Will open on WednesdayThe NCAA tournament isbecoming old hat for LIUBrooklyn. They just didn’tget any respect from thetournament selectioncommittee because of it.
The Blackbirds wonthe NEC for the thirdstraight season, but wererelegated to the play-inround in Dayton, Ohio. They were given a No. 16seed and will face CAAchampions JamesMadison for the right toplay East Region No. 1seed Indiana.
The game will be onWednesday at 6:40 p.m.on truTV.
They were a No. 15seed against NorthCarolina in 2011 and a No.16 seed against MichiganState last year. Theydipped one rung lowerthis year with a spot inthe play-in game.
But they aren’t goingto be hopelessly out-manned if they do get ashot to face Indiana. Theyhave NEC Player of theYear Jamal Olasewere(18.9 points and 8.9 re-bounds per game) and C.J.Garner, who exploded for31 points against MountSt. Mary’s in the confer-ence tournament final.
Up north
The N.Y. contingent isn’tlimited to the city, asperennial NCAAcontender Syracuse andthis year’s America Eastchampions, Albany, alsoget in on the action.
No. 4 Syracuse vs. No. 13 MontanaThe Orange earned thefourth seed in the Eastbracket (topped by Indi-ana) and a meeting withthe Big Sky champions. The Grizz lost to allthree tournament teamsthey faced — SouthDakota State, ColoradoState and Davidson. The‘Cuse bounced backfrom a lousy finish inthe conference tourney.No. 2 Duke vs.No. 15 AlbanyAlbany knows what it’slike to play against NCAAroyalty as a huge under-dog after the pushed No.1 seed UConn to thebrink in 2006. They getanother chance to knockoff a superpower — andthey’ll have the wholecountry dying to seeDuke upset. As usual, ifDuke is missing 3-point-ers, their opponent has achance.
