Based in Colorado Springs, Colo., USA Basketball is anonprofit organization and the national governingbody for men's and women's basketball in the United

States. As the recognized governing body for basketball in theUnited States by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA)and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), USA Basketball is responsible for the selection, training and fieldingof USA teams that compete in FIBA sponsored international basketball competitions, as well as for some national competitions.

USA Basketball is an organization made up of organizations. There are five member categories.

USA Basketball was organized in 1974 and known as the Amateur Basketball Association of the United States ofAmerica (ABAUSA). The name change to USA Basketball occurred Oct. 12, 1989, shortly after FIBA modified its rules toallow professional basketball players to participate in international competitions. USA Basketball then admitted theNBA as an active member and made the change.

USA Basketball is governed by an 11-member Board of Directors. Jerry Colangelo, 2005-2012 USA Basketball Men’sNational Team Managing Director, serves as Chairman of the

Serving since January 2001 as CEO/Executive Director isJim Tooley, who has been with USA Basketball since 1993.

During the 2009-12 quadrennium, 1273 men and womenplayers and 235 coachesparticipated in USA Basketball, including theUSA Basketball boys andgirls teams, and USA Basketball trials and training camp.

Between 2009-12,USA Basketball teamscompiled an impressive264-35 win-loss record inFIBA and FIBA Americascompetitions, the PanAmerican Games, theWorld University Games,the Nike Hoop Summitand in exhibition games.

USA teams are thecurrent men's andwomen's champions in theOlympics; men's andwomen's FIBA WorldChampionships; women’s

USA Basketballranks No. 1 in all five ofFIBA's world rankingcategories, includingcombined, men's, women's, boys and girls.

Competitions in which USA teams regularly compete include the Olympics, FIBA World Championships, FIBA Americas Championships, Pan American Games, World University Games, FIBA U19 and U17 World Championships,FIBA Americas U18 and U16 Championships, the Nike HoopSummit and FIBA 3x3 World Championships.

USA Basketball also sanctions U.S. basketball team tours offoreign countries and foreign basketball team tours of the U.S.,as well as oversees the certification of FIBA and USA Basketball officials and the assignment of those officials to international competitions, and the licensing of players to playprofessionally overseas.

A brief synopsis of the various competitions in which USABasketball teams participate includes:

Olympic GamesMen's and women's Olympic basketball competition is held

every four years (2016, 2020, etc.). For a second consecutiveOlympics, the USA captured double gold at the 2012 LondonOlympics with both the men’s and women’s teams compilingunblemished 8-0 records. The USA men have captured the goldin 14 of the 17 Olympics they have competed in and compiledan incredible 130-5 record. The USA women have earned thegold in five consecutive Olympics and boast of a sterling 50-3record. The 2016 Summer Olympic Games will be held Aug. 5-21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

FIBA World ChampionshipsThe FIBA Basketball World Cup, known from 1950 until

2010 as the FIBA World Championship, is the flagship event ofFIBA competitions. Held every four years , 24 countries competein the World Cup for Men and 16 teams participate in the WorldChampionship for Women. The USA swept double-gold in 2010.The 2014 World Cup for Men will be held in Spain, while thewomen’s World Championship is slated for Turkey.

Pan American GamesStarted in 1951 for men and 1955 for women, the Pan

American Games are held every four years (2015, 2019, etc.) inthe year preceding the Olympics. Countries from FIBA Ameri-cas are eligible to compete. The USA men have an 87-15 overallrecord, winning eight of a possible 16 gold medals, while the

USA women have wonseven of 14 gold medals,including 2007, and own a74-14 record. The 2015Pan American Games areslated to be held inToronto, Canada.

World UniversityGames

The World UniversityGames are held for men andwomen every two years(2013, 2015, etc.), only cur-rent university student-athletes orrecent graduates are eligible.The USA men in 20 appear-

ances have collected 13 gold, three silver and three bronzemedals, and the women in 16 appearances have won eight gold,six silver and one bronze medal. The 2013 World UniversityGames will be held in Kazan, Russia.

U19 / U18 ChampionshipsUSA Basketball also fields men's and women's national

teams for players 19-years-old or younger. FIBA now holdsU19 World Championships every two years (2013, 2015, etc.).In 2011 the USA women finished 8-1 to capture gold, the USAmen compiled a 7-2 record to place fifth. USA Basketball alsofields teams featuring players 18-years-old or younger for FIBAAmericas Zone U18 championships (2014, 2016, etc.).

U17 / U16 ChampionshipsFIBA initiated in 2010 the U17 World Championships for

players 17-years-old or younger and now holds the event everytwo years (2014, 2016, etc.). In 2012 USA Basketball men's andwomen's teams both returned home with gold medals. USABasketball also selects national teams featuring players 16-years-old or younger for FIBA Americas Zone U16 qualify-ing tournaments that will be held in 2013, 2015, etc.

Nike Hoop SummitThe Nike Hoop Summit is the country's premiere annual

basketball game featuring America's top male high school agedplayers taking on a World Select Team comprised of top players 19-years-old or younger from around the world. Played eachApril, the USA enjoys a 11-5 series lead. First contested in 1995,the 2014 Nike Hoop Summit is expected to be played at theRose Garden in Portland, Ore.

3x3 World ChampionshipsFIBA initiated 3x3 competitions in 2010 and now conducts

3x3 World Championships and 3x3 U18 World Championshipsfor men and women. In 2012 the USA women won gold in boththe World Championship and U18 World Championship, whilethe men claimed silver in the U18 World Championship.

The FIBA Americas U16 Championship, which takes place in odd years, is a qualifying tournament for the FIBA U17 World Championship, which takesplace in even-numbered years. The USA Women twice have qualified with perfect, 5-0 records out of FIBA Americas, and the USA is 16-0 with two goldmedals in the two U17 world championships that have been contested. How Did They Get Here?How Did They Get Here?The 2013 USA Basketball Women’s U16 National

Team was selected by the USA Basketball Women’sDevelopmental National Team Committee after fourdays of trials May 23-27 at the U.S. Olympic TrainingCenter in Colorado Springs, Colo.

In addition to the 12 member team, Nancy Mulkeywas named as an alternate and asked to train with theteam. Mulkey was added to the team on June 12, afterTori McCoy could no longer continue due to a concussion and its symptoms.

As it did in 2011, USA Basketball included an applicant-athlete process to the 2013 USA BasketballWomen’s U16 National Team Trials. The 31 athletesinvited to trials by the committee were joined by 93applicant athletes for 124 players total.

While 10 of the 12 team members were invited to trials by the Women’s Developmental Committee, Sabrina Ionescu and Taylor Murray attended trials asapplicant athletes.

In addition to non-voting chair Carol Callan (USA Basketball Women’s National Team Director), the 2013-16 USA Basketball Women’s Developmental National Team Committee includes National Federationof High School appointees Jody Patrick (Flint Hill School,Va.) and Jill Rankin Schneider (Monterey H.S., Texas.);AAU appointees Bill Larson (North Tartan BasketballAAU, Minn.) and Sherri Pegues (GBL Cal Sparks AAU,Calif.); and athlete representative Yolanda Griffith, a2000 and 2004 Olympic gold medalist who has playedon five USA Basketball teams.

feature eight U16 national teams from North, Southand Central America and the Caribbean playing June19-23 in Cancun, Mexico, with the top four finishingteams qualifying for next summer’s 2014 FIBA U17World Championship. Athletes eligible for this competition must have been born on or afterJan. 1, 1997.

Including host Mexico, the tournament also willfeature Canada and the United States as the NorthAmerican entries; Puerto Rico (gold medalists), andCosta Rica (bronze medalists) from the 2012 U15Centrobasket Championship; and Brazil (gold medalists), Venezuela (silver medalists) and Argentina(bronze medalists) from the 2012 South AmericanU15 Championship.

The USA opens play against Brazil at 6 p.m. onTuesday June 19, followed by Argentina at 6 p.m. onJune 20 and a final preliminary-round game againstCosta Rica at 2 p.m. on June 21. The semifinals will beplayed on June 22, and the finals are set for June 23.

The USA Women’s U16 National team conqueredall comers at the inaugural 2009 FIBA Americas U16Tournament in Mexico City, Mexico, and returnedhome with the gold medal and a qualifying berth inthe 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship. Cruising undefeated through the tournament, the USA won itsfive games by an average of 70.0 points and listedNo. 1 in 13 of 19 statistical categories.

The 2011 U.S. squad was not much different, decimating opponents in Merida, Mexico, by an average margin of 43.2 points per contest en route toa perfect 5-0 mark, the gold medal and the USA's2012 U17 World Championship berth.

Trials to select the 2011 USA Basketball Women’s U16 National Team included an open-application process in addition to 35 athletes invited by theUSA Basketball Women’s Developmental National Team Committee, resulting in 112 players competing for 12 roster spots. As it will in 2013, the firstfew days of trials focused on skills sessions and player development, before trials switch to primarily scrimmages as the committee selects the team.

For the inaugural FIBA Americas U16 Championship in 2009, USA Basketball invited 34 of the nation’s best players that met the 16-or-under agerequirement, and the first U16 women’s national team was announced on May 31, 2009, after three days of trials at the U.S. Olympic Training Centerin Colorado Springs, Colo.

Head Coach: Sue PhillipsHead Coach: Sue PhillipsSue Phillips was named as head coach of the 2013

USA Basketball Women’s U16 National Team on April3, 2013.

Previously, she led the West Team to a 2-3 recordand a bronze medal in the 2003 USA Basketball YouthDevelopmental Festival, and she served on the 2009-12 USA Basketball Women’s Developmental National Team Committee.

Phillips recently completed her 20th season as thehead coach at Archbishop Mitty High School in SanJose, Calif., where she has compiled an overall recordof 581-103, including a West Catholic Athletic Leaguetitle and a California Interscholastic Federation (CIF)Central Coast Section (CCS) Open Division championship in 2012-13.

“I am humbled by this tremendous opportunity tobe the U16 national team head coach,” Phillips said.“It is a privilege and honor to serve in this capacity forUSA basketball.

“I am thrilled with the prospect of working withboth Mary and Brian,” Phillips continued. “Theirknowledge of the game and ability to teach is exceptional."

Under Phillips, Archbishop Mitty has captured 18CCS titles, nine Northern California titles, and five CIFstate championships.

In 2004, American Quarterly Basketball namedPhillips as one of five high school coaches in thecountry “you should know.”

In 1999, she guided the women’s varsity team toits first state title at the Division I level. That sameyear, the Monarchs finished with a 31-0 record andStudent Sports Magazine named Phillips NationalCoach of the Year.

In 2000, Phillips spent the year as the lead assistant women’s basketball coach at the Universityof California at Berkeley.

Phillips currently is in her 12th year as the director and a member of the coaching staff for theSan Jose Cagers girl’s AAU program, which includesgrades 5-12.

Phillips teamed up withNike as a skills academy coachin May 2012 in Los Angelesand Portland, Ore., and as anational clinician for Nike shegave a presentation on defensein Chicago in October 2012,and spoke this past April in Portland. Additionally, Championship Productions hasproduced a video on coachPhillips’ defensive presentation.

Phillips graduated from Mitty in 1986 with severalscholarship offers. Choosing to play softball at Northwestern University over basketball at the University of California, Phillips was an All-Big TenConference and all-region player for the Wildcats before returning to Mitty as a math teacher andcoach.

Asst. Coach: Mary Coyle KlingerAsst. Coach: Mary Coyle KlingerMary Coyle Klinger was announced as an assistant

coach for the 2013 USA Basketball Women’s U16 National Team on April 3, 2013.

Perhaps the most internationally experiencedmember of the 2013 USA U16 staff, Klinger suited upfor USA Basketball in the 1979 U.S. Olympic Festival,capturing a 4-0 record and gold medal with the EastTeam, and she was an assistant coach for the 1991USA Junior Select Team that recorded a 5-1 record inMexico and for the 1985 U.S. Olympic Festival WestTeam that earned a 1-3 record and finished in fourthplace.

Coyle is in her 29th year at Rutgers PreparatorySchool in New Jersey, where she has compiled a 440-200 career record, including 10 New Jersey StateInterscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) Prep B statetitles and three Somerset County championships.

In 2012-13, Klinger and her squad finished 15-7.“I am honored and extremely excited to be a part

of USA basketball once again,” Klinger said. “It is anincredible feeling to wear USA across your chest asboth a player and coach.

“I am thrilled to be working on a staff with twotremendous coaches in Sue Phillips and Brian Robinson,” Klinger continued. “Their body of workspeaks for itself. They have positively influencedyoung people through their coaching and I'm lookingforward to the opportunity to work along side them.”

Recently named to the WBCA Board of Directors,Klinger has been an active member of the WBCA &McDonald's All-American Selection Committees. Shewas the 2012 McDonald's All-American East Coach,and she was a part of the first Center for CoachingExcellence at Columbia University in partnership withthe WBCA.

During the spring Klinger directs the Nike SkillsAcademy for the East Coast, in the summer she co-directs the Nike National Basketball Tournament inAugusta Ga., and throughout the year she speaks atengagements and clinics across the country.

She was a member of theRutgers University women’sbasketball team that won theAIAW National Championshipin 1982, and her induction intothe Rutgers' Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame culminated an impressive career. Playing alongside hersister Patty, Klinger was afour-year starter (1978-79through 1981-82) who helped Rutgers to a 110-20record during her time.

To this day, Klinger is No. 5 on the RU all-time freshman assist average with 4.1 apg., No. 4 forsophomores (5.0 apg.) and juniors (5.0 apg.) and No. 2 for seniors with 6.5 apg.

She was inducted into the New Jersey Sports Writers Hall of Fame in 2009.

Klinger earned her bachelor’s degree in athleticadministration, and she has served as the director ofathletics at Rutgers prep for the past 16 years.

Brian Robinson was announced as an assistantcoach for the 2013 USA Basketball Women’s U16 National Team on April 3, 2013.

Previously with USA Basketball, Robinson led theBlue Team to a 2-3 record and silver medal in the2007 USA Basketball Youth Developmental Festival,and he served on the 2009-12 USA BasketballWomen’s Developmental National Team Committee.

Recently, Robinson completed his 12th season asgirls basketball head coach at Bishop McGuinnessHigh School in Kernersville, N.C.

“This is a tremendous honor and one that won't betaken lightly,” Robinson said. “Working in the past forUSA Basketball in different roles was an enlighteningand educational experience, and there is no doubt thatthis role will do the same if not more. It is definitely adream to coach for USA Basketball, something that isbeing looked on as a privilege with a high level of responsibility. The challenge to help shape a team inthe short-term to possibly affect USA Basketball positively in the long-term is exciting. It is really greatknowing that you have an opportunity to contribute tothe continued success of USA Basketball.

“Working with Sue on the past USA Basketball selection committee was great,” Robinson continued.“Sue is a very focused and intelligent person andcoach. I am looking forward to the opportunity towork with her again in a different capacity but for thesame ultimate goal, which is to help bring home agold medal. I have had the opportunity to work aswell with Mary, at the WBCA High School Round Tables at previous women's Final Fours and havecome away impressed with her organization. Mary iswell-respected in the high school coaching ranks nationally, as is Sue, and I am looking forward toworking with both this summer.”

Overall, Robinson has led McGuinness to a 274-68 record, including a North Carolina record forconsecutive state titles in any classification or genderwith eight championships from 2006 through 2013.

Named the Associated Press North Carolina Coachof the year in 2010, Robinson was the runner up forthe award in 2006, 2007 and 2012.

After three seasons (2008-2011) on the WBCAAll-American Game Selection Committee, Robinsonserved as chair of the WBCA in 2011. He also is anevaluator for the Gatorade North Carolina Girls Basketball Player of the Year award.

Robinson began his coaching career as the boysbasketball assistant coach athis alma mater, R.J. ReynoldsHigh School (N.C.), from 1994through 1998, and he took hisfirst head-coaching job as theboys coach at Starmount HighSchool (N.C.) from 1998-2002.

Additionally, he spent oneseason (2010-11) as an assistant coach for the Southeastern Universitywomen’s basketball team in Lakeland, Fla.

In 1996, Robinson founded the Winston-SalemStealers Girls AAU program, which currently fields 15teams and includes more than 170 female athletes,ranging from 3rd to 12th graders.

Since 2003, Robinson has owned his own basketball consulting business, 292 Basketball. Additionally, he is a member of the North CarolinaAAU Infractions Committee, and he is Bishop McGuinness’ sponsor/ leader for the Fellowship ofChristian Athletes.

Robinson has been a basketball clinician at Georgia Tech (2007), Duke University (2008) and theUniversity of Florida (2008), and he was a speaker at aWBCA High School Round Table in 2011.

Robinson has been honored by the City of Winston-Salem Recreation Department as a “Living Legend” in2010 and by the North Carolina High School AthleticAssociation as “Eight Who Make A Difference” in 2006.

He has entries in “A System of Success” playbook(2009-2012), and he has authored two books “MyFoundation of Coaching” (2008) and “A Decade ofDominance” (2012).
