Head Coach Karen Mullins enters the 2013 season as only the 43rd coach in NCAA history to reach the milestone of 800 wins.

Establishing a coaching record of 833-571-5, and a record of 823-561-5 in her 29 seasons with the Huskies, Mullins has played a major role in the tradition of excellence celebrated by the Connecticut soft-ball program.

Known as one of the most successful coaches in the nation, Mull-ins has led Connecticut to eight trips to the NCAA Tournament, one Women’s College World Series appearance and to dominance in the Northeast Region and BIG EAST Conference.

In 1999, Mullins was inducted into the Connecticut Scholastic and Col-legiate Softball Hall of Fame as its 1999 college coach selection. She was honored for her outstanding contribution to the game of softball in 20 years of collegiate coaching and selected from a wide field of candidates.

Mullins has directed Connecticut to eight NCAA National Champion-ship Tournament appearances in the last 17 years, the only appear-ances in program history. UConn made five consecutive NCAA Na-tional Tournament showings (20-team field) from 1989-1993, and also qualified in 1995, 1996 and 2001.

Her UConn teams have advanced four times to the NCAA regional championship game (1989, 1992, 1993 and 1995), winning the NCAA regional title in 1993 en route to its berth in the Women’s College World Series. In a five-year span from 1989-93, Connecticut was one of only nine Division I softball programs to qualify for each of the five NCAA National Tournaments.

UConn has emerged as a perennial power in the BIG EAST Confer-ence. Since BIG EAST softball tournament play began in 1990, the Huskies have won seven of the 15 conference tournament cham-pionships and has been the runner-up four times. Since BIG EAST regular season round robin play started in 1992, Connecticut won all four regular season championships from 1992-1995 when the league crowned an overall champion.

Connecticut’s BIG EAST overall record is an impressive 235-176, for a winning percentage of 57%. Since round robin play began in 1992, UConn is 210-161 in BIG EAST regular-season action and 23-13 in BIG EAST tournament play.

After leading her team to a championship in the BIG EAST tournament and an appearance at the NCAA Regionals in 2001, Mullins and her staff were named the 2001 Speedline NFCA Northeast Region Coach-ing Staff of the Year.

In 1996, the first year of North and South Division play in softball with

the expansion of the BIG EAST, UConn clinched the Northern Division title and repeated that feat in 1997.

She celebrated two milestones in the 2007 season. She won her 700th career game as a collegiate coach with a 7-4 win over Santa Clara on March 4 in the Santa Clara Bronco Classic. She followed it up with her 700th career win at Connecticut with a 9-8 win over Villanova in the first game of a doubleheader on April 21. The Huskies have posted a record over .500 or above in all but three seasons of her tenure, with 25-plus wins in 15 of her 24 seasons.

During the 1993 season, Mullins’ 10th season as the Huskies’ head mentor, she concluded her “Decade of Excellence” at Connecticut on an impressive note by leading the 45-14 Huskies to their first NCAA Tournament regional championship. This took them to the NCAA Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla., where UConn finished tied for fifth in the tournament.

During the 1990s, UConn softball posted an overall re-cord of 335-175-2 for a 65.4 winning percentage. UConn also gained its highest NCAA national poll regular season finishes in this span, finishing No. 14 in 1992 and No. 16 in 1990.

For her efforts, Mullins was voted National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division I Northeast Softball Coach of the Year in 1989, 1990 and 1993. Since voting for BIG EAST Softball Coach of the Year was initiated nine years ago, Mullins has earned that distinction five times, from 1992-95 and again in 1997.

university in her tenure. Of those graduates, nearly half have attained Dean’s List status.

Since Mullins’ appointment at Connecticut, the Husky softball program has finished first or second in the final NCAA Northeast rankings 10 times and has been ranked No. 1 in the region at season’s end three times (1989, 1990 and 1992). In 2001, the Huskies claimed the No. 2 final ranking in the East region.

Under Mullins’ guidance, nine UConn players have earned All-Amer-ica status a total of 10 times over the past 17 years: shortstop Vicki Bartolucci and pitcher Sue Rybczyk in 1990; outfielder Janna Venice and pitcher Kim Mizesko in 1992; Venice, pitcher Pat Conlan and out-fielder Andrea D’Innocenzo in 1993; second baseman Shari Blackman in 1994; D’Innocenzo again in 1995; and Micah Truax in 2007. Venice also was selected ECAC Player of the Year in 1992 and 1993, firsts for the program. Six of Mullins’ student-athletes, including 1997 graduate Bridgett McCaffery, 1988 graduate Julie Sherman and 1986 graduate Millie Didio, were honored as National Academic All-Americans during their playing careers. She then had an impressive three players receive Academic All-American status from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. They included 2007 graduate Holly Calcagno and current Husky seniors Allie Gendron and Kristina Tolles.

In the 18 years BIG EAST Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year honors have been voted on, 11 of the possible 30 awards have gone to Connecticut players, six of the 12 Pitcher of the Year honors and

five of the Player of the Year honors. Venice was tabbed Player of the Year in 1992 and 1993, followed by Blackman in 1994, D’Innocenzo in 1995 and Truax in 2007. Mizesko (1992), Conlan (1993), Kara Cha-nasyk (1994) and McCaffery (1995, 1996, and 1997) earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year honors.

In addition, 30 of Mullins’ standout athletes have been selected to the NCAA All-Northeast Region Team a total of 60 times, and 43 players have earned All-New England status a total of 76 times.

A member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and the New England Softball Coaches Association, Mullins served a two-year term on the NFCA All-America Committee. She also is a member of the New England Intercollegiate Coaches Association and chair of the BIG EAST Conference Softball Coaches Association.

Mullins, who resides in Coventry, Conn., is a 1979 graduate of the University of Connecticut, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education and also received her master’s degree in sport management in 1980. She was a standout basketball and softball play-er as an undergraduate and was awarded a UConn Senior Athletic Medallion from the University upon graduation.

She is a former nationally-recognized Major League Fastpitch Soft-ball infielder and was the co-founder of the Single A Major Waterford (Conn.) Mariners softball team.




tory yamaguchiassistant Coachthird season indiana ‘07Yamaguchi is entering her third season as an assistant coach with the Huskies. Yamaguchi was previously at Indiana where she spent two years serving as one of the program’s assistant coach-es as well as catching for the Hoosiers throughout her collegiate career. Yamaguchi played in the National Pro Fastpitch League in

2008 and 2009 competing for the Philadelphia Force.

At Indiana, Tory graduated in 2007 as one of the program’s best hitters as she still holds the career home-run record (40) and earned All-Big Ten honors. Yamaguchi was named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team all four years.

Before arriving at Indiana, Yamaguchi was a standout player at Chaminade College Prepara-tory in West Hills, Calif. where she was named the team’s best defensive performer and First Team All-Mission League following her senior season. She was also a member of the 16th An-nual Los Angeles Daily News All-Star West Team and First Team Los Angeles Times All-Region Team that year.

Yamaguchi has also served as a private pitching, catching and hitting instructor in Bloomington, Ind. and as an assistant coach at Granada Hills High School in Granada Hills, Calif. in 2006.

A native of Woodland Hills, Calif., Yamaguchi graduated from Indiana in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and earned a Master of Science degree in kinesiology - applied sport science from Indiana in 2009.

alex grayassistant Coachfirst season valdosta state ‘02

Alex Gray enters his first season as an assistant coach with the UConn softball team, Gray brings a wealth of experience to the coach-ing staff as he has several years of experience coaching at various high school and collegiate levels. Gray also served as a Health and Physical Education teacher from 2007-2012.

Most recently, Gray was the head softball coach at Lowndes High School in Georgia where he compiled a 67-34 overall record and led the squad to three Region Championships and being ranked a top-ten team in Georgia in both 2009 and 2010. For Gray’s efforts with the Vikings he was tabbed the 2012 Head Coach for the South All-Star Team in the GACA Softball Showcase.

In addition to coaching for the varsity team at Lowndes, Gray served as the head junior varsity and varsity coach at Richmond Hill High School from 2009-12 and reached the first round of the state tournament in 2009. He also was the head golf coach and junior varsity coach for women’s basketball at Richmond Hill.

Gray earned his Associates degree from Young Harris College and his Bachelors in speech communications from Valdosta State in 2002. He lettered in baseball two years at Young Harris and two years for the Blazers. Gray served as an assistant coach with the Blazers’ softball team from 2001-2002 while at Valdosta.

High School: Earned four varsity letters at Seneca Valley High School … Named to the All-Section team in her fresh-man, sophomore and junior seasons … Played for the Pitts-burgh Spirit for nine years coming in second at Nationals in 2005 with a season record of 82-2 … Finished with a .500 bat-ting average after four years in high school … Also a member of the volleyball and indoor track teams.

Dana Hughes has a variety of roles with the UConn softball team. As a student assistant coach, she primarily spends most of her time in the bullpen warming up the pitching staff before and during games. She also lifts weights with the team and does whatever she can to add to the squad. There was a time when this contribution appeared to be beyond her reach.

Hughes almost lost any chance of being involved with the UConn softball team in January of her senior year of high school when she was involved in a serious car crash on her way to practice. Hughes was immediately taken to the hospital.

UConn’s top recruit spent three weeks in the hospital, including the first two in a medically-induced coma. She had a craniec-tomy, which was medically necessary to treat a brain injury, as well as a C1-C2 neck fusion. She also suffered from a spleen laceration and a lung contusion.

Unsure if she would survive the accident, Head Coach Karen Mullins said “she’s such a competitor and a fighter. She proved them wrong every step of the way.”

Hughes was released from the hospital and underwent five weeks of therapy. Despite missing so much school, she was still able to graduate on time. The only thing she had to do was complete her senior project, which was training for a half marathon and raising money to keep softball in the Olympics. Although she could not physically run the marathon, she and some friends were still able to participate and finish the race.

After an incredible recovery, Hughes came to UConn in the fall but was not cleared to play on the team. “I remember sitting in the room. I can’t really describe it,” said Hughes about learn-ing she would not be able to play. The full scholarship that she had been offered was still given to her, however, and she took a position as a student assistant coach.

“I don’t know if I could have come here without the scholarship. I was so happy about that,” said Hughes. Still things were not easy for the Pennsylvania native. “Freshman year was the hard-est year of my life. I thought about transferring, but it was the best decision of my life to stay. The coaches have been really good about everything.”

Accepting her new role with the team was better than nothing, but it was still very difficult. “When I first came in, I thought that the girls thought that I could do everything and I was just being lazy.” She also said that incoming freshmen are always curious as to why she does not fully participate. “Sometimes I still do feel isolated,” she said. “It’s only natural.”

Although she does not see any action on the field, that does not mean she fails to make a direct impact with the team. “She practices every day. She pushes people to make them better. Dana enjoys life and competi-tion and brings that to the field,” said Mullins.

When she first came to UConn, she was ex-tremely limited as to what she could physically do. Each year she is al-lowed to do more things, though, and that helps her stay connected with the team.

“I thought I’d be on the sideline as a cheerlead-er,” said Hughes. “At first I wasn’t allowed in the weight room and most of the things I can do now. It makes it easier to come to grips with everything.”

Academics are also very important to Hughes, as she has been named a BIG EAST Academic All Star.

“The players have tremendous respect for her. We don’t know how she survived. The energy she brings to the program is outstanding,” said Mullins. “How can that not inspire you?”

2013 season Preview

The 2013 University of Connecticut softball team was tabbed to finish ninth out of 13 teams in the BIG EAST Conference this season. This selection comes after the Huskies concluded the 2012 season with a 21-27 overall record, a 9-13 league mark and the squad’s first trip to the BIG EAST Championship since 2009.

The Huskies enter 2013 looking to continue their growth as the team returns seven starters and a total of 13 letterwinners after only losing four seniors to graduation. Connecticut will begin the season without the veteran presence of Ali Adelman, Amy DeLuca, Amy Vaughan and Jen Ward. Vaughan’s firepower will surely be missed as she led the team with a .309 batting aver-age and broke UConn’s all-time single season homerun mark with 13. Ward’s speed will be hard to replace in the outfield and on the base path after a 2012 campaign that saw the senior steal a team-best 25 bases which is the new all-time single sea-son mark in UConn’s record book.

Connecticut has a plethora of veteran options to turn to in 2013 with seniors Kiki Saveriano and Kim Silva leading the way for an experienced and determined core group of veterans along with an impressive freshman class. Saveriano is the Huskies top returning pitcher as she totaled 30 appearances in 2012 compiling an 11-16 record and 3.29 ERA. Silva, a 2012 All-BIG EAST First Team selection, concluded 2012 with a .896 fielding percentage and was second on the team with a .299 batting average.

Pitchers

The Huskies will look to Saveriano to lead a relatively unproven pitching staff this season. Kiki saw action in the circle more than any other Husky pitcher pitching 161 innings and tallying 137 strike outs in her 30 appearances. The senior hurler has been tried and tested the past three seasons and knows what kind of game she has to deliver from the mound to beat the great teams.

Saveriano will be joined on the hill by junior Katelyn Callah-an, sophomore Lauren Duggan and freshman Alyson Ambler. Both Katelyn and Lauren saw limited time last season and are poised and determined to step up and help this team succeed this spring. In addition, when not on the mound Lauren also has the ability to handle the ball at the corner infield spots for the Huskies.

Rounding out the UConn pitching staff is freshman and Wash-ington State Gatorade Player of the Year, Alyson Ambler. Am-bler is an exciting player and talented pitcher who the coaching staff hopes to see grow throughout the season.

Catchers

The Huskies sport plenty of options behind the plate with two returning players, junior Andrea Huelsenbeck and sophomore Tori Thomson, as well as freshman newcomer Jackie Dubois. Huelsenbeck will be counted on both offensively and defensive-ly as the most experienced receiver of the group. One of our most versatile athletes, Andrea finished the season with a .291 batting average, .409 on base percentage and a team-high 19 walks. Thomson has worked very hard behind the plate to so-lidify her skills and bring positive reinforcement to the pitching staff. A lefty hitter Tori also may be counted on to deliver some key at bats at the plate. Rookie Jackie Dubois is working to make an immediate impact behind the plate. Her strong arm and powerful bat make her a great addition to the program.

Infield

A key ingredient of the 2013 squad will be tough and aggressive infield play. Leading the way will be sophomore shortstop Emily O’Donnell. Emily started her career with a bang her freshman campaign starting in all 48 games at shortstop and sporting a team-high of 39 runs scored and was second on the team in slugging percentage, hits, RBI’s, and homeruns. A dynamic de-fender, O’Donnell always finds a way to make the play.

Senior Brittany Duclos returns to second base. A poised player that delivered some key hits last spring, Dulcos started in ev-ery game in 2012 and finished the season with a .257 batting average, including 26 hits, six doubles, one triple and three homeruns. Also vying for playing time at second is freshman Val Sadowl. Val is a sure handed infielder that brings a lot to the team up the middle. At first base, the Huskies will rely on work-horse Audrey Grinnell. A determined player, Grinnell manned first base for the Huskies in 45 games last season finishing with a team-high of 293 putouts. The coaching staff expects great things for Grinnell who showed a total metamorphosis this fall playing with confidence and leading the way both offensively and defensively.

Third base is the spot on the infield that’s really up for grabs. Vying for playing time at the hot corner are Huelsenbeck, junior Maddy Schiappa and freshman Lexi Gifford. Huelsenbeck has great hands, a strong bat, and tremendous versatility. One of the team’s speedsters, Schiappa has stepped up her play at third base and in the outfield after seeing action in 38 games last spring tallying 12 hits and 10 runs. Gifford will also com-pete for playing time showing great game sense and a knack for making the play. Rounding out the infield and adding depth is sophomore Ashley LaPenta. One of the teams hardest workers, Ashley saw action in 10 games her freshman season.

OutfieldersThe Huskies have a talented group of players that will offer a variety of options in the outfield for UConn this season. After seeing plenty of action at third base the past two seasons senior Kim Silva has moved to the centerfield position. The coach-ing staff moved Silva to the centerfield position this season to capitalize on her leadership abilities and take charge attitude. Silva’s great speed and aggressive play make her a dangerous player both on the field and on the base paths.

This season marks the final year for NFCA All-American Schol-ar-Athlete Marissa Guches. She started in right field all 48 games last spring batting .275 with five homeruns, one triple, three doubles and delivered 24 RBIs. Classmate Jess McDer-mott has improved every year and is expected to challenge for a starting position in the outfield as well. A valuable role player, McDermott saw action in 16 games last season collecting three hits and two doubles.

Also vying for outfield positions is Schiappa and freshmen Heather Fyfe, Alyssa Gardea, and Gifford. Both Gardea and Fyfe are looking to gain experience at this level and figure prominently in the team’s plans for this season and the future. Gifford is a gifted athlete with great game sense and all the tools to blossom into a great collegiate player.

Overall the coaching staff has a lot of flexibility in our outfield players with offensive production being the determining factor in deciding the starters.

2012 season review

With a 21 - 27 overall record, including a 9-13 confer-ence mark, the UConn women’s softball team was much improved from their 19-30 record in 2011. The Huskies’ historic year included setting multiple re-cords en route to their first BIG EAST Championship since 2009.

Connecticut saw junior Kim Silva named to the All-BIG EAST First Team after she concluded the year second on the team with a .299 batting average, in-cluding 40 hits, 27 runs, 20 RBI and six home runs. It was Silva’s first BIG EAST accolade. Senior Amy DeLuca also earned her first conference accolades as she was selected for the All- BIG EAST Second Team. DeLuca tallied a .274 batting average on 26 hits. She also scored 15 runs and totaled 14 RBIs.

Senior Amy Vaughan led the team with a .309 batting average, tallying 46 hits, 19 runs, 13 homeruns and 42 RBI. Vaughan’s 13 homeruns in 2012 set a new UConn single season record for homeruns. Vaughan was part of the duo, joined by freshman Alex Falco, which tied an NCAA record of two grand slams in the same inning in UConn’s 15-0 shutout against CSU Bakersfield. Vaughan was tabbed as the BIG EAST Athlete of the Week following her record-breaking performance.

Senior Jen Ward was an important asset to the team as she led the Huskies in stolen bases with 56. Ward’s 56 stolen bases broke UConn’s single season record and lifted her to second place in Connecticut’s all-time list. Ward recorded a .238 average, 35 hits and 29 runs her senior campaign.

The Huskies go-to pitcher, junior Kiki Saveriano fin-ished the season with an 11-16 record and a 3.29

ERA in 30 appearances in the circle for UConn, while senior Ali Adelman (3.62 ERA) concluded the 2012 season sixth in the nation with six saves in her 27 appearances.

Connecticut kicked off their season with four away tournaments where the squad posted a mark of 6-10 after sweeping CSU Bakersfield on the road. The Huskies remained on the road visiting Bryant for an 8-2 victory before falling at intrastate rival Fairfield.

UConn opened conference action with a bang sweep-ing Seton Hall on their home field in South Orange, N.Y. before returning to Storrs for the 2012 home opener against Sacred Heart. The Huskies double-header home opener was outstanding as the team downed the Pioneers 8-4 and 15-9.

It wasn’t long before the Huskies hit the road again traveling to BIG EAST foe Notre Dame where the team found little success losing all three games.

The Huskies found comfort at Burrill Family Field ex-tending their home win streak to seven games after defeating a strong UMass squad, 5-3, and sweeping conference opponent Villanova in the league home opener. Despite dropping the last seven games of the 2012 campaign, the Huskies were able to reach the BIG EAST Championship for the first time since 2012 where they fell to top-ranked Louisville, 8-0, in the first round.

With motivation from a first round elimination, the Huskies will be looking to go even further in 2013.

strengtH and ConditioningThe strength and conditioning program for the University of Connecticut is under the supervision of UConn Strength

and Conditioning Coordinator Jerry Martin. The Strength and Conditioning staff services all 24 of Connecticut’s inter-collegiate teams.

UConn athletes have the use of two different weight rooms in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and the newly remod-eled Hugh S. Greer Field House. In all, there are over 8,000 square feet of weight training facilities available for all UConn student-athletes.

The weight room in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is a free weight facility and supplies the Husky student-athletes areas in which to perform their power and Olympic lifts. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights in which the UConn athletes can incorporate circuit training, speed training and heavy negative workouts into their total strength-training program.

Martin and his staff supervise a strength and conditioning program for each individual athlete for training all year long. Each program can be manipulated in order to fulfill the specific needs of the individual. Specific testing is done to each softball player to monitor progress in strength, power, body composition, anaerobic conditioning and flex-ibility. These tests provide the coaches and medical staff with an accurate athletic profile on each softball athlete.

The University of Connecticut is committed to each of its student-athletes as a total person. Participation in athlet-ics is important, but it represents only one aspect of the players college experience. At the University of Connecticut, academic achievement is the primary concern. Impressively, for the past four years the Connecticut student-athlete retention rate has been 99.0 percent.

The University's commitment to the student-athlete is a dual one. Participation in athletics is not viewed as an obstacle to the attainment of one's educational goals, rather it is seen as a complementary activity. Each supports the other. Athletic excellence is stressed, but academic achievement is never compromised - indeed, it is given the utmost priority.

The University realizes that all student-athletes are required to commit a large percentage of their personal time to University sponsored athletic activities. For this reason, the University recognizes the need for a support program for its intercollegiate athletes. The Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) constantly assists all student-athletes in achieving their academic goals. The CPIA staff serves as a liaison to the academic faculty, the Division of Athletics, and the student-athlete.

In serving as a liaison between the Connecticut student-athletes and University faculty and staff, the CPIA coun-selors also provide assistance in securing appropriate support services available with the University. These include orientation for student-athletes, supervised study halls, individual tutors and tutorial centers (an English/Writing Center, Math Center and Reading Center), and learning skills seminars.

For the past three years, the writing lab and computers have been networked to a national database which allow all student-athletes to do research at their actual computer stations.

A counselor is assigned to work with each intercollegiate team, and working directly with the UConn softball pro-gram is Alana Linick. Linick monitors all aspects of each athlete’s academic life, including class schedule, arranging for tutors and progress toward a degree. The goal for each Husky student-athlete is to earn a degree so they can become a success in whatever field they choose.

The Connecticut Softball Stadium has been in its pres-ent location since 1987. The facility has been the site of many postseason games including the 1990 NCAA Re-gionals where UConn and Adelphi recorded a marathon 20-inning game.

The field has also been the site of the 1992, 1993, 1997 and 1999 BIG EAST Softball Tournaments. The Huskies have won two BIG EAST Championships when hosting (1992, 1993).

The Huskies hold an 8-6 postseason record at the Sta-dium and boast an overall 288-132-2 record including 16 seasons with 10 or more wins and 17 seasons with five or fewer losses.

Bob and Barbara Burrill have been ac-tive supporters of UConn Athletics for more than 25 years. The Burrills have been long-time season ticket holders for football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball. The entire family -- including Christian (MBA ’07), Jessica (’01), Laura (’06) and Jeffrey -- are regularly seen at games cheering on their beloved Hus-kies.

Bob and Barbara are both UConn gradu-ates (Class of 1974). Bob was a Manag-ing Director at UBS Realty Investors in Hartford for many years before his most recent endeavor into the real estate busi-ness.

The Burrill family has generously sup-ported UConn Athletics through various gifts, including the establishment of The Barbara and Bob Burrill Family Athletic Scholarship.

ATHLETICS

Victoria Flowers and Heather Wilson continued the success UConn has achieved in recent years in women’s track and field. The Huskies

had a total of seven All-Americans in 2011-12.

UConn and state officials made the exciting announcement that the school will be joining the Hockey

East Conference in 2014-15.





All-BIG EAST First Team selection Jeremy Lamb and the UConn men’s basketball team once again earned a spot in the NCAA tournament.

All-American Carlos Alvarez and the Husky men’s soccer team played their way to the NCAA quarterfinals.

Diver Danielle Cecco earned a spot in the NCAA Championship for the second-straight year.

Jake Waruch was the BIG EAST decathlon champion and participated in that event at the NCAA outdoor championship.

All-American Jestine Angelini and the Husky field hockey team played in the NCAA national semifinals and won the BIG EAST regular season championship.

All-American Bria Hartley and the UConn women’s basketball team won the

BIG EAST tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Final Four.
