CONDITIONS OF CONTEST
i. All rules of the NBCA and TBL will be strictly enforced.
ii. Bandspersons must appear in band uniform. iii. The official entry form must state whether or not competitors require the
official accompanist. If this is not done it will be assumed that the competitors will supply their own accompanist.
iv. Competitors will be permitted to use their own accompanist in any class
provided that the chosen accompanist is available when the competitor is due to perform. Otherwise, the competitor must use an official accompanist.
v. All Own Choice music must be handed to the appropriate official at least
30 minutes prior to the commencement of the class. All bars must be numbered.
vi. Competitors must report to the Contest Co-ordinator at least 20 minutes
before commencement of their class. vii. For all Own Choice music classes, the following time limits will be adhered
to:

use a Test Solo if they wish. ix. If a competitor is entering in more than one class they must play a different

ensure that they are available to perform when, and as, required. PLEASE NOTE:
Notification of scratchings assists with the smooth running of the contest.
A novice is a person who has not gained a first place at any NBCA, TBL or affiliated solo contest.
Please ensure that any trophies held by you or your band members are returned in good condition on or before the day of the contest.
A competitor may only enter in one novice section.

Kevin Cameron is an Australian music educator and conductor. He is Head of Music at Unity College Murray Bridge and Music Director of
some of Adelaide’s most well regarded ensembles, including the Unley Concert Band, the K&N Spring Gully Brass, the Woodville Concert Choir and the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. He received his initial musical training at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and has studied music in London, Perth, the United States, and finally Newcastle, where he was the first recipient of the award of Doctor of Philosophy in Music at the University of Newcastle. Dr. Cameron has studied conducting with the eminent American composer/conductor Edward Applebaum, the Italian maestro Gian Luigi Gelmetti, and the world-renowned conducting teacher Gustav Meier. Dr. Cameron has appeared with the Sydney, Tasmanian, West Australian, and Darwin Symphony Orchestras, the State Orchestra of Victoria, the Auckland Philharmonia, the National Orchestra of Ukraine, and many youth and community orchestras across Australia. In 1994, he was the inaugural winner of the ABC’s Young Conductor of the Year competition, and has subsequently held numerous professional conducting posts, including Principal Conductor of the Band of the South Australia Police, Assistant Conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, ABC Conductor in Residence, and Music Director positions at Murdoch University, Newcastle University Choir, and the University of Newcastle Symphony Orchestra. During his time in Newcastle, Dr. Cameron served as the founding Artistic Director of the Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music. Dr. Cameron has maintained a passion for music and education, and continues to assist the development of musicians through his involvement in professional and community music ensembles as a conductor, coach, adjudicator, advisor, artistic administrator, and teacher.

Sean currently teaches music at MacKillop
Catholic College and St Michael’s Collegiate in
Hobart. He has held leadership and teaching positions, in the P-12
classroom and instrumental music sectors since 2002, and in the
tertiary sector since 1984. These include positions at: Carey Baptist
Grammar School, Scotch College, Xavier College, Monash
University, University of Melbourne, University of WA, Edith Cowan
University, and the Conservatorium of Music at the University of
Tasmania.
As an elite performer Sean entered the classical music profession
at the age of 16, and has held positions as Principal trumpet with
the West Australian Symphony, Melbourne Symphony, Orchestra
Victoria, and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. He has
appeared as orchestral soloist with TSO and WASO, recorded for
ABC Classics, and broadcast on ABC radio. In the commercial field,
Sean has played lead trumpet for international and national music
icons such as Michel Le Grand, Aretha Franklin, and Tina Arena,
Vanessa Amorosi and Katie Noonan.
As an assessor, moderator and adjudicator, Sean has assessed
concert bands and brass bands, ensembles, and soloists, for the
National Band Council of Australia, Victorian Bands League, West
Australian Band Association, and the Tasmanian Bands League.
He has served as National Wind, Brass and Percussion Selector for
the Australian Youth Orchestra, and examined to the Doctoral level
at Unimelb, Monash Uni, UWA and ECU.
In addition to school based conducting, Sean has maintained an
active life in the community band sector, conducting, tutoring,
performing and competing with bands such as Kew Band
Melbourne, Footscray Yarraville City Band, RASWA Brass, and
Glenorchy City Concert Brass.
Derek Grice – B.Mus, Grad.Dip.Mus (Tas Con)
Tasmania
Derek is a woodwind and percussion specialist
and graduate from the Tasmanian
Conservatorium of Music. He has on occasion
been a casual player with the Tasmanian
Symphony Orchestra and has performed in the orchestras of
countless Tasmanian musical and theatre productions.
Derek has served five years as a member of the Tasmanian Bands
League’s Musical Advisory Board with responsibility for the
selection of grade and age appropriate set solo pieces, contests
works for band, the grading of bands, and the appointment of
contest adjudicators. Over the last few years he has extended his
professional repertoire by becoming a qualified AMEB examiner.
In 2012 Derek took out the National Band Championships
Woodwind Champion of Champions soloist section and has played
Principal clarinet in many National Championships including
winning the Open ‘A’ Grade Concert Band section on three
occasions with Hobart Wind Symphony.
He is in much demand as a woodwind and percussion tutor in
Hobart schools. He currently teaches at the Friends School, St.
Virgils College, Collegiate and Sacred Heart College. He also has
an active home studio of private students.
Derek hones his percussion skills while playing with Glenorchy
Concert Brass which is currently the only ‘A’ Grade brass band in
Tasmania.
As a competitor and winner at previous TBL Solo & Party
Championships Derek looks forward to his new role as adjudicator
at this year's competition.
