RANDOLPH STAFF/AD

Tina Hill began her fifth year as Director of Athletics at Ran-dolph College in 2012-2013.

Hill has spent the past 20 years in the field of NCAA Division III athletics, having worked at Cornell College, California Lutheran University,

and Elizabethtown College.

Prior to her arrival at Randolph, Hill served as the director of athletics at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, for five years. As the Ram’s first full-time athletics director, she was responsible for the complete administration of the college’s 19 NCAA varsity sports as well as its intramural program.

Before her time at Cornell College, Hill served as the as-sociate director of athletics at California Lutheran University from 1997-2002. During that time, she assisted with the administration of the university’s 15-sport athletics pro-gram. From 1990-1997 Hill worked at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. She began her career with the Blue Jays as an intern before eventually serving as the associate director of athletics and as a staff instructor in physical education during her final four years at the college.

Hill received her B.S. in physical education from the Uni-versity of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and her M.S. in sports management from the University of Richmond. As an un-dergraduate at Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Hill was a two-time first team all-conference volleyball player.

As the Randolph College Director of Athletics, Hill coordi-nates the daily operations as well as the long-term objec-tives of the WildCats’13-sport intercollegiate athletics program.

Hill is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators and National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. She has served on various NCAA and conference committees, including a term as the chair of the NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Committee.

HEAD COACH CLAY NUNLEY

Caroline Cubbage starts her third season as the Randolph College softball coach in 2013 after joining the staff in the summer of 2010. Cubbage had a fantastic first campaign for the WildCats in 2011, as she led Randolph to its first ODAC Tournament Final in program history. She helped accumulate 22 wins which set a program and school record. Three players earned All-ODAC honors, including one All-ODAC first teamer. In 2012, three more players earned All-ODAC spots including another first-team All-ODAC player.

Cubbage came to the WildCats after serving as head coach for one season at Concordia University in Seward, NE. She led the Bulldogs to a 24-18 overall mark in 2010, going 12-12 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

The Bridgewater, VA native also served as a graduate assistant coach at Ball State University in Muncie, IN for two seasons, where she earned her Master’s Degree in Sport Administration in 2009. While at BSU, she assisted with the offense and was also in-charge of the academic progress of all of the student-athletes.

Caroline Cubbage is no stranger to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), as she was a three-time Division III All-American at nearby Lynchburg College, twice earning ODAC Player of the Year honors. She held a career .458 batting average, while sporting 12 in-dividual records at Lynchburg and two ODAC records, including homers (38) and on-base percentage (.563). Cubbage graduated from Lynchburg with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sport Management in 2007.

She graduated from Eastern Mennonite in 2010 with a bacholor of sciences degree with a major in business administration and a minor in finance.

Ben Downs Assistant Softball Coach

Ben Downs will join the Randolph College softball staff as an assistant coach for the 2013 season. This will be Downs’s first year coaching softball, but he is no stranger to the diamond or to Randolph College.

A Phi Beta Kappa honoree, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from The College of Wooster as a double ma-jor in History (departmental honors) and Black Studies.

2013 SEASON PREVIEW LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College softball team comes into the season after a 2012 season that saw the WildCats finish 18-20 on the season, including drop-ping both games in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament for the first time in the last three seasons. Randolph was picked 8th this season in the preseason ODAC coaches’ poll. This year has been different says head coach Caroline Cubbage, who will enter her third year as the skipper of the WildCats. Cubbage has noted that this season is go-ing to be a team effort, and that the “we not me” motto will certainly be a team rallying cry. “We’re really preaching the team, family thing this year,” said Cubbage. “It’s not going to be sound in all aspects of our game.” Randolph posted five hitters in the 2012 season that batted over .300 on the season, and three of them are back to cement the offense. When asked about the of-fense, Cubbage was quick to point out that it’s important to look at certain numbers and not just homers. “As far as home runs, I’m not going to predict that really, but I see our team as more of a doubles-type team, with good power to the gaps,” said Cubbage. “We will hit some homers, but having a healthy Brittany Willingham (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie) will be huge for our offense.” There’s no doubt that Willingham, entering her senior year at Randolph, will be a big contributor on offense. Last season, even while dealing with a torn labrum, she managed to bat .403 with seven doubles and an on-base percentage of .468. Willingham had off-season surgery and is back healthy ready to lead the WildCat attack. Last season, then-junior Ashley Gardner (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) had her coming out party, as she was voted All-ODAC First Team after batting .434 with eight doubles, 26 RBI and an OPS of 1.010. Gardner also was very good at shortstop, making only eight errors on the entire season. Gardner will be looked upon to have another stout season for Randolph at the plate. “I think Ashley is going to be a massive contributor this year,” said Cubbage. “She does so many things with the bat, and she’ll definitely be someone we expect to have a solid year.” The WildCats did graduate their leading run producer in third baseman Gina Pagano, but should have more depth to make up for her loss this season. Looking around the infield, Randolph will employ a familiar set-up on the left side, as Gardner will man shortstop and third base should be occupied by sophomore returner Patti Vinson (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette). Vinson, who was named VaSID All-State Second Team, batted .262 on the season with 22 RBI in 103 at bats. She also played in all 38 games as a first-year, starting in 36 of those. First-year Ashton Ewers (Gladys, VA/William Campbell) may also get some time at third base this season for Randolph, and she has shown a very good ability to hit the ball this spring. Ewers, who was the Dogwood District Player of the Year in 2012 in high school, can also play some right side as well. Changing to the right side of the infield, Willingham will make the transition from center field last year to first base this season. Willingham has played first base before in her career, and her smooth fielding reputation should translate well at the corner. At second base this season, junior Brittney Via (Charlottesville, VA/Monticello) returns after batting .268 last season as a sophomore. Via was among the ODAC lead-ers in walks last season with 21, and was third on the team with a .423 on-base percentage. First-year Jessica Nowak (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) is another name to watch at second, as her athleticism and solid approach at the plate should translate well to the collegiate game. Another first-year that can play the infield will be Jamie Bennett (Bedford, VA/Liberty). Bennett is a left-handed bat with some pop that can also play the outfield as well. Look for her to get at-bats possibly at first, in the outfield, or even at designated hitter. “She’s a left-handed bat, and we think she could step in and contribute with the stick.” Moving to the outfield, Randolph will look for sophomore Jess Sanabria (Burgaw, NC/Pender) to become to the leader of the young group. Sanabria was fourth on the team in hitting last year, batting at a .372 clip with eight doubles, two homers and a team-high .535 slugging percentage. She should take steps forward and become one of the team’s best hitters this year. Also back this year is sophomore Haleigh Wilson (Stuart, VA/Patrick Co.), who has shown to be a solid defender in right field for the WildCats. “Haleigh really worked hard over the summer and in the fall, and it shows,” said Cubbage. “We expect her to raise her game for us this year.” Wilson had only 22 at-bats as a first-year, something she will look to improve on as a second-year player. Two highly touted first-year players who will also get a look in the outfield are Rachel Hickman (St. Alban’s, WV/St. Albans) and speedy Erin Wehrhan (Virginia Beach, VA/Princess Anne). Hickman is a right-handed bat with some pop and looks to get a chance to start immediately in either center field or at a corner spot. Wehrhan is undersized, but her game is much larger than her diminutive frame. Wehrhan can really go and get it in the outfield, and her slap approach at the plate should be very valuable to the Wild-cats. “Both Rachel and Erin are extremely hard workers,” said Cubbage. “They both understand the game, and more importantly love to play. You can see their passion every day out there.”

Sophomore Heather Funk (Buchanan, VA/Floyd Co.) missed all of her first-year due to an injury but is back looking to make up for lost time. Funk is a fundamentally sound player that can fill multiple positions, including catcher. Junior Brandie Witt (Bedford, VA/Liberty) returns to the team after missing last year, and will be a key base running substitute this year for the WildCats. Behind the dish this season will be a highly competitive situation, as junior Alexis Arnett (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) and first-year Hannah Cook (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) will both battle for at-bats. Arnett started 21 games last year as a sophomore, batting .200 in only 25 at-bats on the season. Cook has really stung the ball in the pre-season, and her 5-11 frame has been a good target for pitchers. “I think bringing in Hannah Cook is the best thing that has happened for Alexis,” said Cubbage. “She’s being pushed every day to get better in every drill. We’re excited about the tandem back there, and we think catcher should be a strength for us.” Looking in the circle, the WildCats will have a group of four pitchers this season that will carry the load. Juniors Kristen Hutchinson (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgom-ery) and Logan Carter (Richmond, VA/Midlothian) should see the bulk of innings on the rubber, though Sanabria will also have a large impact with the ball in the circle. Hutchinson is coming back from injury, as she finished 2012 with a 2.72 earned run average in 56.2 innings of work. Carter led the team in innings as a sophomore, firing 74.2 innings also posting the team’s best ERA with a 2.62 clip. Carter led the ODAC in saves with five and also in appearances with 24. Sanabria led the team in wins last season, picking up eight victories in 18 appearances. She also held opposing batters to just a .234 batting average against as she had four complete games and two shutouts. Via will also contribute in the circle as a junior, as she threw 44 innings last year in 15 games. “To be honest, I have four pitchers this year and it’s going to take all four to get the job done,” said Cubbage. “It really is going to be a team effort by our pitching staff to help us win ball games this year.” Looking at the schedule this season, the WildCats have the luxury of playing the three teams picked at the top of the ODAC Preseason Poll at home. Randolph will welcome top pick Virginia Wesleyan to town April 6, while Roanoke College (Apr. 13) and Bridgewater College (Mar. 23) also make the trip to Lynchburg. Randolph in all has eight home dates this year, including non-conference battles against Mary Baldwin (Feb. 24), Maine-Presque Isle (Apr.1) and season-opener Averett University February 16. Randolph will also play eight games at the Snowbird Softball Tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC on March 3-6. “Our schedule should be very competitive, all of the ODAC games will be contested, as everyone is getting better,” said Cubbage. “I’m anxious to see how we stack up, and even with our non-conference schedule starting with Averett, it’s going to be a good test but I’m excited to see how our team plays.” The WildCats host the Cougars this Saturday at 1 p.m. before hitting the road for their first road doubleheader of the year at Virginia Intermont College Saturday Febru-ary 23.

ODAC CONFERENCE

Celebrating its 37th year of operations, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) is one of the nation's largest Division III conferences. The 14-member ODAC, including one associate member, stands as the second-largest multi-sport NCAA Division III conference in the country. The league was formed on May 18, 1975 as the Virginia College Conference and began operations in September of 1976. (The name chane to Old Dominion Athletic Conference became effective January 1, 1976). Charter members were eight colleges located in the state of Virginia: Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite College, Emory & Henry College, Hampden-Sydney College, Lynchburg College, Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College and Washing-ton and Lee University. From its initial year of operation through the 1981-82 academic year, the ODAC sponsored competition in 10 men's varsity sports, including foot-ball, soccer, and cross country in the fall; basketball, wrestling, and indoor track and field in the winter; and baseball, golf, tennis, and outdoor track and field in the spring. Women's sports were added prior to the 1982-83 school year. Today, the ODAC has grown to sponsor championships in 22 sports (10 men and 12 women) and houses nine full-time coeducational institutions with three single-gender schools making up the current 13 full-time members. The conference expanded in the late 1980s, early 1990s and most recently in 1999. Virginia Wesleyan became the 13th member of the confer-ence in 1988 and began full-scale competition in the league in the 1989-90 academic year. Guilford College, voted into the conference in the spring of 1990, began competing for conference championships in the 1991-92 season. The Catholic University of America (DC) was accepted for associate membership in football on January 12, 1999, and just recently Shenandoah University accepted an invitation to join the ODAC ful-time in 2012-13. Over the past 19 years the conference and the City of Salem, Va., have gained national attention through hosting five NCAA Division III champion-ships in football, men's basketball, softball, baseball, women's lacrosse and volleyball. The growing list of titles passed out in Salem began in the fall of 1993 with the DIII Football Championship. Through the 2009-10 academic year, the conference and city have hosted 49 NCAA Division III Championships since the '93 Stagg Bowl. This year, the two will serve as hosts to the DIII football, men's basketball and softball championships.Governance:The Conference is governed by a 13-member Presidential body consisting of all of the full-time members' CEOs. Dr. Billy Greer of Virginia Wesleyan is the chair of the ODAC Presidents' Council. In addition to presidential leadership, the conference's day-to-day operations are supervised by its Board of Directors, which consists of all conference member Directors of Athletics. Eastern Mennonite Director of Athletics Dave King serves as the current Board President with Virginia Wesleyan's Joanne Renn serving as President-Elect.Location:The conference office is located in Forest, Virginia at 16001 Suite B Forest Road.

RANDOLPH FACILITIES

Randolph Softball Complex

Randolph Athletic and Dance (RAD)

WildCat StadiumThis new facility was completed in 2009 and plays host to the men’s and women’s soccer and lacrosse teams. WildCat Stadium features a FieldTurf surface which plays like grass but can withstand the pound-ing of sporting events and intramural contests year round. Also, the field is surrounded by a state-of-the-art eight lane track which is used for exercise and training purposes. The Stadium also has a scoreboard and flag present-tion straight across from the seating areas, which are elevated for a superb view of the action. Restrooms are located atop the plaza adjacent to the press box, which features wireless internet. WildCat stadium also boasts one of the more beautiful places to play in the league, with trees surrounding the north and west sides of the Stadium.

The Randolph Athletic and Dance Center (RAD Center) is one of the loudest gyms in the ODAC. “The Den,” the gymna-sium in in the RAD Center, plays host to the Randolph men’s and women’s basketball teams, along with the volleyball team in the fall. PER has an elevated seating side, where fans can see all the action unfold. Weight room, athletic training facilities, a five-lane swimming pool and athletic administration offices are also located in the Center.

The Randolph College Softball Field is located on near the Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College and has some of the best sitelines for play in all of the league. The field has a Bermude outfield, while seating is available behind the backstop as well as well as down the lines. The fence measures 225’ all the way around, which is standard around NCAA softball. The facility is equipped with a batting cage behind the right field fence and also has bullpens recently added to the home side.

National RankingsHow does Randolph College measure up?

To get an unbiased opinion and see how Randolph compares to other colleges and universities, take a look at some of our recent national rankings:

• Forbes Best College Buys - Randolph College was the only private college in Vir-ginia named a Best College Buy in the 2009 rankings from Forbes.com and the Cen-ter for College Affordability and Productivity (CACP). Randolph College also earned a spot in Forbes America’s Best 600 Colleges list, the Best Liberal Arts Colleges list, and the Best Colleges in the South list. • The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) surveys undergraduates at four-year colleges and universities to assess the extent to which they engage in a variety of good educational practices. Randolph scored consistently and substantially higher than both the national average and the major-ity of liberal arts schools nationwide. •Colleges of Distinction, which honors a select group of colleges and universities, cited us for excelling in four areas: “Engaged Students,” “Great Teaching,” “Vibrant Communities,” and “Successful Outcomes.” • The Fiske Guide to Colleges, 2010 edition, gave the College high praise for the rigor of its academic programs, naming it one of the na-tion’s “best and most interesting” colleges. Randolph is one of just 12 Virginia colleges and 330 nationwide to be recognized. The Fiske

profile touts Randolph’s strong academic programs, faculty/student relationships, close community, and international focus. • The Princeton Review’s Best 371 Colleges 2010 edition, named Randolph a “Best Southeast College” and lauded the College’s outstanding academics. Randolph was also recognized for the diversity of our student body and our global focus, ranking 7th among those colleges in the percentage of international students on campus.

•Seventeen Magazine recently named us as the 5th best small college in the nation. •The latest edition of Barron’s Best Buys in Education placed us in the top 10% of colleges and universities nationwide, based on faculty attention to students, inspiring programs, and opportunities for personal and professional development. CITY OF LYNCHBURG

Lynchburg is a scenic city located near the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia. The area has an extensive history beginning with its founding on the James River in the 1760's by John Lynch as "Lynch's Ferry." Today the city has an urban population of over 96,000, including the suburbs of Madison Heights, Timberlake, and Forest. Lynchburg's economy is based on the many high-tech manufac-turing companies located here including cellular communica-tions, nuclear energy, and machinery. This manufacturing and research orientation represents a shift from the mill-based econ-omy of the past, which included foundries, shoes, and textiles. Education is well-represented with five area private colleges and a public community college. Health care includes two hospitals, one of which, Lynchburg General, has been recently renovated into a state-of-the-art facility for the next century. Lynchburg is sometimes referred to as "A City Unto Itself", in part due to geographic and cultural isolation, but mostly in reference to the city's historical avoidance of State and Federal entangle-ments. The phrase was the title of a history book by columnist Darrell Laurant.
