Goss From The Boss

Mulwaree has a wonderful tradition of providing excellent leaders in all fields. Last week this tradition was continued with the election of our SRC, School Prefects and Captains for the oncoming year. I would like to thank all of those students who decided to make themselves available for the elections. It is unfortunate that some will miss out in our democracy but all students involved have shown a dignity and humility in the manner in which they accepted the decisions of their peers. Once again our electoral system has elected 4 excellent young people for the jobs of Captains and Vice Captains. Patrick Davis and Eloise Matthews will be our Captains and Jarrod Twaddell and Rachel Hindi, our Vice Captains. I am sure that they will lead the school with vigour, understanding the responsibility they carry. I look forward to working with them and the rest of the Prefects

and SRC in the coming year. I would also like to congratulate Ms Cooke, the Year 11 Year Adviser and Mrs Cranston, the SRC co-ordinator who both organised the elections of their respective group. Theirs was a job well done. Further to this, I would like to thank Mrs Roberts, Mrs Christoff and Mr Wardle for the great work on the induction of our leaders on Friday. Once again, this was done with panache and befitted the occasion. In other news, Year 11 are preparing for their final Preliminary exams. Their HSC courses begin in earnest in Term 4, where everything counts to the HSC. Tuesday will be our Parent/Teacher evening in the Hall from 4pm to 8pm. This is a great opportunity for our parents to meet with the teachers to discuss their children’s progress. It is a vitally important evening and I would hope that all of our parents are able to attend. M Purcell Principal

Last Friday, 80 Year 6 students from Bradfordville, North

Goulburn and St Josephs, converged on Mulwaree for the

first of two Enrichment Days. The students were given a

“sneak peak” of life at Mulwaree, experiencing four subject

areas, PE, Mandarin Chinese, Art and Food Tech as well as

two Peer Support sessions with our Year 11 leaders who

took the students on a tour of the school, played fun games,

and led discussions on high school life. The Year 6 students

had a wonderful day and were involved in many activities

including gymnastics, learning to pick up M & M’s with

chopsticks and baking cookies. Lunch time was also

popular with those interested in learning to play Chess in

the Library or playing handball in the TAS area. Comments

from our visiting Year 6 students were positive and many felt

more comfortable having now experienced a taste of high

school life.

Chappo’s Thought For The Week Stop Short-changing Your Family Eileen Silva Kindig writes: “We talk about lack of time, when what we lack is backbone to take responsibility for how we spend it. Instead of coming home, we’re escaping to all sorts of places to get away from household chores, childcare and the demands of relationships... but the less time we spend with family, the messier our home life gets.” It is so important that we take the time to build relationships with our family, not matter how strained the relationship may seem to be. One day you’ll be very appreciative that you took the time now.

Having A Sea Change? 90 Year 10 students journeyed to Warilla Beach, on the South Coast, on Friday 24th August. The purpose of the excursion was to note the problems experienced at the coast plus the strategies being put in place to deal with these problems. The group had a most informative and pleasant day -18°. It was certainly much warmer than in Goulburn! A lunch shopping session at Shellharbour Square rounded off a successful trip. Mr Holdsworth

Causing a Racquet Congratulations to Corey Greenwood, Year 8, who has been selected in the South Coast Under 16 Tennis team. Corey was also selected for the individual tennis competition for South Coast earlier in the year. Corey represents the South Coast in Gosford in October. Good luck Corey for your upcoming tournament.

Year 8 Indonesian Banquet On 17th August, Indonesia’s Independence Day, and 28th August, our students of Year 8 Indonesian travelled by Mark Culmone’s bus to The Goulburn Chinese Restaurant, located in Market Street. They had the unique opportunity of sampling genuine Indonesian cuisine supplied by Zhuotao Jiang and Feng Zhang. Students tasted Soto Ayam - a delicious Chicken Soup, Nasi Goreng - Fried Rice, Krupuk - Prawn Flavoured Chips, Ayam Goreng - Marinated Chicken Legs, Sate Daging dan Sos Kacang - Beef Sate with Peanut Sauce and Udang - Sizzling Chilli King Prawns. All of the students enjoyed their Indonesian Banquet and, as usual, received many complimentary remarks on their excellent manners, appearance and behaviour. Well done Year 8!

Year 12 Dance The Night Away In Style? On 28th August the SRC held their Term 3 Social. The theme was “International” with a surprise theme for the Year 12’s “What used to be cool”. This was Year 12’s last social. They turned up in droves and with their party moves on. It was a great success and the new SRC for 2013 looks forward to holding more socials in the coming terms.

Safety: Toe the Line

Student Use of Mobile Phones With the increasing misuse of mobile phones within the school it has become necessary to change the school’s policy. Some examples of misuse and time lost in terms of Teaching and Learning are as follows:-

Students using phones to “set up” fights and to video these incidents. These are then placed on Facebook and You tube.

The impact this has on the school image and student’s self esteem. No guarantee of student safety with people outside of school “invited” to attend and witness or involve

themselves in these fights. Loss of teaching time dealing with phone issues in class or related to lost and stolen phones. Cyberbullying and time spent trying to sort out issues at school. Photographing of other students without approval. Exam malpractice.

THE FOLLOWING RULES NOW APPLY: Students are NOT to bring mobile phones to school. Mobile phones on excursion and sporting visits will be at the discretion of the organiser. This policy has been fully supported by the student SRC and the P&C Association of Mulwaree High

School. Any need to contact students can be done through the front office of the school on 4821 4499. If a phone is sighted by a teacher, the phone will be confiscated. Parents will be asked to collect at the

end of the week. NO NOTES WILL BE ACCEPTED.

School Blazers Could anyone who has borrowed school blazers please check wardrobes. We are missing a couple of blazers and would like to have them returned please.

The following letter has been received from Goulburn Health Service. “It is with appreciation that the Goulburn Base Hospital management and staff acknowledge the generous donation of $217.50 towards the Renal Unit. Many patients will benefit from the generosity and kind donation. Once again thank you for this contribution as it will assist in improving the quality of care for the patients of the Goulburn Base Hospital.” Our thanks and congratulations to the Year 12 students involved.

Operation Christmas Child Each year we have an opportunity to collect small gifts (enough to fill a shoe box) and send them overseas to children who would otherwise not receive anything at Christmas. This small act on our part can mean everything to children living in poverty, so if you’re interested, please see Chappo for more information or to collect a box.
