Everything old is new again! On Friday night, ConTempo celebrated their return to quartet competition by winning it all to become the 2013 Region 21 Quartet Champions. ConTempo

last won the regional contest in 1999, but their ring and artistry didn’t disap-pear during their hiatus. All members hail from the Tucson area; Margaret Rochon, Dayle Ann Cook and Karen Meade sing with Tucson Desert Har-mony and Debbie Shipman is CAL. As contestant #8 they performed “Angry/Bill Bailey Medley” and “Crying Myself

to Sleep,” earning a total of 612 points from the judges.

Appearing as contestant #2, Ms. Cel-laneous, from Golden Sands, Har-borlites, Scottsdale, and Vista Hills, moved up two places in the medals from 2012 to earn second place medals with a score of 583, singing their contest set of “I Wanna Be Around (To Pick Up the Pieces)” and “It’s a Pity to Say Goodnight.”

Pandemonium, a new quartet formed from a quartet shuffle, earned third place medals. Dawn Anne Gladden and Andi Rostel of SparX and Tracey Sandberg and Anna Bernhard of Orange Crush (from Har-borlites, Route 66 Sound, San Diego, and Scottsdale) sang “Oh, How I Miss You Tonight” and “I Can’t Give You Any-thing But Love” to earn a score of 571 in their first competition together.

Fourth place medals were earned by

Cadence, representing CAL, Harborlites, and San Diego. With a score of 560, singing their contest set of “You’re Keeping Secrets From Me” and “Original Dixieland One-Step.” Additionally, Cadence took home the Most Improved Quartet Star Achievement trophy with an increase of 19 points from 2012. The audience appreciated their performance, their improvement, and how gracefully lead Cherilyn Polliard handled performing late in her pregnancy by voting Cadence the Audience

Choice Quartet Award.Aloha Spirit again travelled the greatest dis-

tance to earn their quartet medals. They earned 551 points and 5th place green ribbons per-forming “My Foolish Heart” and “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love.” All members current-

ly sing in the Honolulu Blend Show Chorus, which officially joined Region 21 this past year.

The Novice Quartet Award was earned by Dream-Catchers (Rising Star 4th Place Medalists) from CAL and Scottsdale.

Sweet Adelines International competi-tion in Honolulu, HI will bring to a close the championship year of Touché. Patty Cobb

Baker (Harborlites and Golden Sands) of Region 21 with Kim Chadwick (Pride of Portland, Region 24) and Jan Anton and Gina Baker (CAL and Toast of Tampa Show Chorus, Region 9) will perform their Swan Song – and at many other occasions throughout the week – including their first performances as members of the Coronet Club.

Dolce earned an automatic entry into the

2013 quartet semifinals by placing 10th in Denver. This quartet will have a lot of extra luggage, as lead Ruthie Tabone will be a new mom in time to compete with her quartet in Hawaii.

As 2013 regional quartet champions,

ConTempo will join Dolce in the quartet semifinals. They will take the stage as con-testant number 22.

Welcome to another year in education, Region 21 style! You may be enjoying a delicious s’more by the glow of the campfire in Prescott at Re-gion 21’s Camp Ringing Pines as you read this edition. Directors, visual teams, and arrangers are receiving a whole day of specialized classes with our International Faculty guests, Sandy Marron and Judy Poszgay of the mighty Lion’s Gate Chorus. Class time with our guest faculty and camp choruses led by two of our fabulous directors, Lori Lyford and Pam Pie-son, bring us another opportunity to make beautiful music together! With gifts of love, we send off not one but two choruses, San Diego and Scott-sdale, to compete in Honolulu along with our returning finalist quartet, Dolce and our 2013 Champion Quartet, ConTempo!

In September, the members of your Regional Management Team will experience an in-region training day with member of the International Faculty Marilyn Cox. We will be focusing on leadership development and recruitment, curriculum planning, and event planning in this training. I urge you to consider if you might be interested in pursuing leadership at the regional level to contact Sue Bowdoin, who is serving as chair of the nominating committee this year.

Just a few short weeks after Hawaii, International Faculty and Harbor-lites member Lynne Smith will be our guest faculty at MusicFest Novem-ber 23 in beautiful Albuquerque. Let’s all add to those Southwest frequent flyer miles and join our eastern friends, Enchanted Mesa Show Chorus, Route 66 Sound Chorus and El Paso Sungold for a day of energizing and recharging!

Team Coordinator, Sue BowdoinCan you imagine a summer without a trip to Prescott? Neither can

the RMT! So, we’re back for another fantastic Camp Ringing Pines! Lori Lyford and Pam Pieson are returning as “Camp Counselors” and our “Head Counselors” are Sandy Marron and Judy Pozsgay Rimple. We’re looking forward to a fantastic weekend in the pines!

It’s that time again for the RMT to show our thanks and appreciation to those many regional members who assist us. You’ll see by reading the “In Appreciation” column that it takes more than the eight RMT mem-bers to effectively run Region 21...it takes a team! As an aside...have you considered working on the regional level? There are many opportunities, not only as a member of the Regional Management Team but as a chair or on a committee that supports each coordinator. During the Regional Update/Q&A on Saturday afternoon, you’ll have a chance to learn more about these opportunities.

We’d like to send our best wishes for a successful competition this fall to our Region 21 representatives in Honolulu, HI. Representing us at the 2014 International Convention & Competition will be Scottsdale, 2012 Chorus Champions and San Diego Chorus, our Hawaii Wild Card! Re-gion 21 Quartets will be: Dolce, 10th Place International Quartet and ConTempo, our 2013 Quartet Champions. Congratulations to Touché as they complete their championship year!

After Hawaii, make plans to attend MusicFest on Saturday, November 23rd with the fabulous Lynne Smith in Albuquerque, NM. We’ll see you there!

Happy Summer, Golden West Region 21! Whatever your summer plans, I hope you are doing it with a little music on the side.

Region 21’s fiscal year 2012-2013 showed a profit of $11,400; a nice surprise since we were unable to sell the choral shell as planned. The

majority of our income came from events and regional assess-ments. Events included the ADP retreat, Summer Seminar,

NM MusicFest, and Spring Convention/Competition. Miscellaneous sales items include advertisements and Love Notes in the Golden West Magazine, regional pins, photos, mass sing materials and proceeds from the 50/50 raffle at Summer Seminar. The remaining amount came from interest and gains on our invest-ments.

On the flip side, the major-ity of our expenses were for our educational events. These included our ADP retreat, NM MusicFest, Summer Seminar and Spring Convention/Competition.

deliver quality publications, com-munication tools, and educational events. And we appreciate the con-fidence you have in us regarding how your money should be spent. I look forward to working with the new team!

What an awesome Spring Convention! Harborlites is thrilled to be the 2013 Region 21 champion chorus. We are looking forward to representing Region 21 in Baltimore – along with Honolulu Blend Show Chorus and Tucson Des-

ert Harmony! Are we the first region to have a contestant in every chorus contest? We just might be!

And we’d like to give a special thanks to the Scottsdale Chorus for an outstanding job as hostess chorus.

Our big news is: we’ve moved! Af-ter being based in Anaheim for many

years, we’re returning to Huntington Beach, where Harborlites was first char-tered. We’d love to have you come visit at our new location: St. Wilfrid of York Episcopal Church, 18631 Chapel Lane in Huntington Beach.

We had a great time at our 7th annual Harborlites Harmony Golf Classic at Los Serranos Golf Course. The afternoon of golf was followed by dinner, awards, and entertainment from Passion, Pandemonium, and Dolce — thanks to ev-eryone who participated. If you’d like to join us next year, mark your calendars for April 11, 2014!

Our next big event is our annual show, “Always In Our Hearts...Harborlites,” on October 19 at the La Mirada Theater. Come join us for a great show featuring the chorus as well as 2013 International Champion Quartet Touché, Dolce, Ms. Cellaneous, and Pandemonium. It should be a harmony-filled evening! Tickets for the show are available on-line at www.harborliteschorus.org.

Harborlites would like to wish all the International Competitors a peak experience in Honolulu — we’ll be cheering for you!

Harborlites Chorus Huntington Beach, CA

The San Diego Chorus is on the move to Hawaii! We’re mov-ing money into the coffers and bodies onto the risers.

The summer is usually a time to relax and vacation. Not us! The San Diego Chorus has a jam-packed schedule full of perfor-mances and fundraisers to help fund the fun in Hawaii. By the time this is printed, the chorus will have had a wildly success-ful rummage sale, entertained donors with a benefit concert for Rolling Readers of San Diego, and participated in the 2013 Side By Side live judging panel. Not to mention the extra duet r e h e a r s a l s and coach-ing sessions to hone our skills for In-ternational. W h e w ! What a ride!

Recruiting new members and retaining existing ones is a challenge for every chorus. I’m happy to report that our efforts this year are paying off. It seems like we’re welcoming a new member every week! Our mentor program is booming and we’re incorporating the feedback we receive from our newbies right back into the program. The newest addition to our out-reach is providing new members with a USB drive full of cho-rus resource materials aimed at getting them ready to roll!

If you just can’t wait until Hawaii to get your San Diego Cho-rus fix, have no fear! Our annual show is coming to quench

The general and administrative expenses included regional equipment purchases and repairs, liability and property insurance, storage, two RMT meetings, postage and supplies. Competitor support included

love gifts and coaching assistance to choruses and quartets that com-peted at International. Communications en-compassed the costs of the Golden West Magazine, our Region 21 website, the “Gold Standard” e-newsletter, and various technology tools. Marketing/Mem-bership costs were for various public relations and marketing tools including ads and rec-ognition ribbons at In-ternational, CAL com-munications, chapter visits and membership awards.

Scottsdale Chorus is in full “journey to Hawaii” mode. Indeed it is all about that magical week this coming November. We’re ratcheting up the intensity of every rehearsal and loving what it does for us. We are working through a su-per line-up of coaching sessions and retreats with a top-of-the-line team: Tony DeRosa, Dale Syverson, Betty Clipman, and Cindy Hansen. It is a true pleasure

and privilege to work with such talent. We’re also polishing our packages with a full schedule of sectional dueting. We’re sisters for the long haul!

No doubt there are others in Region 21 with long-haul schedules from now until November. We are wishing our Region 21 Hawaii-bound sisters ALOOOOO-HA and best of luck for a memorable experience! San Diego Chorus, Dolce, ConTempo and Touché, YOU ROCK!

You know who else rocks AND who are also close to our hearts? Treble-makers from Chandler High School. Our “little sisters” directed by our Lori Lyford won First Place in the recent Sweet Adelines video contest. Definitely check out the video when it appears on the SAI website!

Stay cool this summer.– Jenny Lucier

Contest score 608! TDH now has Master Director, Karen Meade, leading us to the Harmony Classic in Baltimore, 2014. Thank you, Melanie Wroe and Darlene Rogers for helping us along our way. AND, ConTempo is on their way to the land of Aloha. Margaret Rachon, Dayle Ann Cook, Debbie Shipman, and Karen Meade will be representing Region 21 and TDH at the International competition in Hawaii. ALOHA! Good luck Scottsdale and San Diego!

Fundraising! We want to give special recognition to new members work-ing so hard at our annual rummage sale. Melinda Rowe organized a bake sale. Paula Roberts and Teresa Taylor helped with the bake sale, pricing, and pur-chases at the rummage sale. Their dedication and energy goes far, building

funds for TDH. Keep up the good work toward raising funds for 2014!

It’s Summer Regional! TDH has THREE all TDH double quartets compet-ing: Out of Season with Olivia Browne, Caroline Young, Yvonne Maynard, Annie Hayes, Pat Hartowicz,

Marilyn Helton, Kathy Grimm, and Fran McQuate; Tough Love with Fran Tuell, Carrie Hall, Vera Hess, Penny Starr, Sandy Hodges, Misti Nowak, Teresa Taylor, and Brenda Weathers; Hormonal Harmony with Margaret Rochon, Betsy Decker, Melinda Rowe, Dayle Ann Cook, Birgit Mortensen, Ann Bridges, Karen Meade, and Rhonda Benhase. Great experience, great fun, good luck to all!

This year we keep in our thoughts and our hearts the Yarnell 19, their fami-lies and the communities of the Prescott area and of all first responders.

– Rhonda Benhase

Sounds of Harmony Covina, CA

Several ladies from SOH are enjoying Region 21 “Camp Ring-ing Pines” in Prescott, AZ in August. We’d like to say “Good luck and have fun!” to all the double quartet competitors at “camp.”

Our big news right now — in June, we changed our rehearsal from daytime back to evening, and we now meet on Mondays from 6 to 9 PM, at Grace Lutheran Church in Covina, CA. We hope this will help bring in some new members.

We really had a great experience at the spring competition, performing for evaluation only. It was also fun seeing all the won-derful choruses and quartets perform!

On May 8th, we enjoyed having our installation luncheon at Marie Callendar’s. Virginia Richie, a former Sweet Adeline and the mother of our Director Sharon Orsi, was the installer of our management team. Our new team coordinator Twila Morrison chose the theme for this year, “Growing Forward”. We will all strive to do this!

Scottsdale Chorus Scottsdale, AZ

Sharon was very excited to be able to attend the Director’s Work-shop, “Side by Side” at Chapman University in Orange, CA, in July. Our chorus is looking forward to several performances this fall.

And now, to all of you who are attending “Harmony on the Horizon” in Honolulu, have lots of fun and best of luck to all our Region 21 competitors!

—Char Nelson

Pacific Belles Escondido, CA

Pacific Belles Chorus has been humming with events since our return from Pasadena. Late in April, we gathered in our best “bling” or saddles with 50’s poodle skirts for the installation and awards banquet. Frances Lowe was installed as President for her second term. The evening ended with the exciting announce-ment of Barbershopper of the Year – Heidi Versteeg!

Our annual June show, “Girls, Girls, Girls” included a medley of Armed Forces songs that was a hit as we asked all of the Vet-erans in the audience to stand. We also awarded our annual “Note-able Young Musician Scholarship Award” to Rodrigo Arreola, a local singer/musician who just graduated from Palomar College and is headed to CA State Fullerton! His performance was amaz-ing and we are proud to help him along the way.

With the fun patriotic show in our rear view mirror, PBC’s next four months will be busy. On August 31 we will have our next show “Good Time Barbershop and Variety Show” where the audience will be entertained by quartets, va-

Echoes of “iLand Tunes” continued to ring through the historic Pasadena Civic Auditorium and the Pasadena Hilton after the completion of the Region 21 annual Spring Convention and Competition last April. Harborlites became the 2013 Chorus Champions and also took

home the Audience Choice Chorus Award ribbons. Tucson Desert Harmony earned 2nd place medals and first place honors in the Division AA mid-size chorus contest with a score of 608 points, which was high enough to make Karen Meade a Master Director. Honolulu Blend Show Chorus under the direction of Bonnie McKibben captured 3rd place medals and the 1st place Division A medals with a score of 581 points. All of Region 21 watched the regional scores through the rest of the contest season to see if these division champions would remain in the top five in the world, and they did! Both Tucson Desert Harmony and Honolulu Blend Show Chorus will travel to Balti-more, MD in 2014 to compete in the Harmony Classic, Region 21 will have a con-testant in every division.

Placing 4th overall and 2nd Division AA was Enchanted Mesa Show Chorus under the direction of Denise King. With 15 members on stage, Route 66 Sound scored a 536, which earned them 5th place overall and 2nd place in the Division A Small Chorus competition and Most Improved Chorus Ribbons with an increase of 27 points from 2012.

Inland Empire took home the 3rd place mid-size chorus medals with 33 on stage, and Song of the Pines took home the 3rd place small chorus medals.

Though competition is the focus of the Regional Convention weekend, every minute was filled with events and education beyond the competition. Some highlights:

Scottsdale served as hostess chapter, handling every detail with grace and efficiency. On Thursday, Club 21 held a meeting and rehearsal in preparation for the weekend’s kick-off event: the Club 21 Show and Quartet Jamboree. This year’s show was held in the Pasadena Civic Auditorium

Gold Room and featured a tribute to Nancy Bergman, as well as competing quartets singing a non-contest song. The Club 21 Show raised money for our quartet competitors in Honolulu.

On Friday afternoon, following the Auditorium inspec-tion and the joint Quartet and Chorus briefing, Kim Vaughn and Jana Gutenson presented “Judging Secrets Revealed” to

begin the discussion of the changes to the con-test rules. Immediately before the start of the quartet competition, Sweet Adelines gathered on the steps of the Pasadena Civic Center for a Mass Sing, featuring selections from the Mass Sing Songbook, directed by Sandy Squires (Route 66 Sound) and Sandy Wingate (Red RockAppella).

Prior to the announcement of the chorus contest results, Sue Bowdoin and the Regional Management Team presented this year’s inductee into the Region 21 Hall of Fame – recognized for their “profound impact on the entire membership of Region 21.” This year’s inductee was Set-suko Annie Hayes of Tucson Desert Harmony. Annie Hayes serves as the Region 21 Young Women in Harmony Coordinator, serves on the Young Singers Foundation Silent Auction Team, and is instrumental in promoting barbershop to the next generation of singers. Ac-cording to one member, “In my lifetime, I have met few people who have been so dedicated, responsible, and compassionate.”

On Saturday night in the Hilton International Ballroom, Scottsdale hosted the Aloha Har-mony Showcase and Luau. Audience Choice Award ribbons were presented to Harborlites and Cadence. The Most Improved Quartet Award Star Achievement trophy was presented to Cadence; and the Novice Quartet plaque was presented to DreamCatchers. The audience enjoyed command performances by the weekend’s winners before kicking off the luau afterglow celebration, complete with hula hoop contest, quartet performances, and tropical dessert bar.

Our chorus has been riding high since returning from a fabulous regional contest with two medals – 2nd in Small Chorus & 5th overall! Topping it all off was the award for Most Improved Chorus! We’re very grateful to our director Sandy Squires and amazing Section Leaders – Sue, Benida, Judy, and Sandy. Special thanks to our won-derful coach, Tony Sparks, who taught us tags, honed our vowels, inspired us every month, and even walked the pattern with us in Pasadena. We came home motivated to be most improved again next year. Once again our region wowed us with wonderful quartets and choruses, and we’re so grateful to be a part of it.

The chorus presented a workshop on a cappella 4-part harmony singing at the An-nual Albuquerque Folk Festival on June 1st. At one point we had fourteen women

singing with us and three of them have been coming to our weekly rehearsals! Those of us attending Summer Seminar in Prescott are looking forward to all the educa-tion, singing, fun, and seeing old friends again.

We’re hard at work learning many new songs for our 3rd annual show – “Calendar Girls!” It’s scheduled for Novem-ber 16th with guest appearances by Pandemonium, Southwest Edition, Paramount, & On Q Chorus. The show committee is also producing a 2014 calendar, whose pro-ceeds will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Hope to see you soon!

–Diane Taggart

Spring was certainly a season of some transformation within our chorus! Not only did we welcome back singer Karen Whitfield (Lead), but gained three new members in Christy Terrazas (Lead), Denise Mais (Lead), and Karyn Styles (Tenor). We continue to evolve as a chorus that is not only capable, but commendable. We’re certainly on

our way!We were privileged to host a short but incredible

visit from Chris Robertson and Mary Branham in early April. Their tools and advice are always a breath of fresh air and bring a renewed commitment to do-ing things right and having fun along the way.

The chorus performed at Scotsdale Baptist Church’s community event on May 24th. It was a sticky, sunny day that is best described as “on fire”. It’s

a good thing that as a chorus, we were too! The crowd really seemed to enjoy the music selections and sound, paying compliments to the group and individuals as well.

El Paso Sungold hosted a Rummage and Bake Sale in June. We had a nice turnout, and it was fun and profitable. Also in June, our quartets were given an opportunity to perform for the soldiers at Fort Bliss through the MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recre-ation) agency and have been invited back to sing on July 3rd!

With lots of performances on the horizon and team building happening everywhere we turn, “our future’s so bright...we’ve got to wear shades.” We’re looking forward to Prescott in August! See you there and good luck!

CA

Mission Viejo Chorus has spent the last six months working under the tutelage of our new director, Kim-berly Baker. Kim is a gifted dynamo who brings us her energy and a fresh approach to our shared love of bar-bershop harmony. We LOVE Kim’s enthusiasm!

Mission Viejo has been busy since spring regional. On May 11th, we sang at the Women’s Journey Conference in Irvine. Our patriotic set moved the audience to tears, and they awarded us with a standing ovation. We’d like to congratulate our chapter quartet Jewel Tones for placing second in the “Mission Viejo’s Got Talent” con-test on June 1st. Our Summer Singers program began on June 25th. We are off to a fine start with almost a dozen

In April, team members attended the Women In Busi-ness Quarterly Luncheon to promote SOTP and provide networking o p p o r tu n i -ties. We in-stalled our new Manage-ment Team in May and sponsored a table at the Prescott Noon Lioness fashion show to sup-port PAWS – a women’s shelter. In June, talented quilter Judy Hughes made a quilt square highlighting Region 21 for the quilt to be shown at International. We had a show in July – with two very rewarding performances! Our numbers are continually increasing. Among our newest members is Mission Viejo’s first Grandmother/Granddaughter duo, Judy and Mercedes Martin. Judy is a former International Quartet Competitor, and we are delighted to welcome her back to Sweet Adelines.

We look forward to seeing many of you at Camp Ringing Pines and learning and sharing together under the excellent direction of our Camp Counselors and Guest Counselors!

Hello Regional family! Dolce sends our love and we hope you’re all having a wonderful summer so far. Things have been extra busy around our neck of the woods. Ruthie is well into her third trimester and our little Dolcette is currently the size of a honeydew, and we can not wait to welcome little Lucy! Mina is keeping busy with her three boys (ages 8, 11, 13) and Erin and Megan are both starting new music teaching jobs! Thank God we have this amazing hobby as an outlet! We are definitely counting down the days ‘til Hawaii, especially after watching the Barbershop Harmony Soci-ety webcast from Toronto! A special shout out to our FWD brothers Masterpiece for their stellar gold medal performances! Also to The Crush for their amazing jump up to 6th place, Ruthie’s husband is the bass if you didn’t know, so we are very proud!

We love any opportunity to share our music with others, and we have had some wonderful events as of late. Most memorable was a fund-raising luncheon for the Braille Institute Aux-iliary, where several in attendance were vision impaired. We just love how music can touch peoples hearts! Also a highlight was singing for the 50th wedding anniversary of our dear friends Karen and Phil Ridout. We will be fea-tured on the Harborlites show on October 19th, so save the date! We hope to see you all soon, Aloha!

The Sistahs are still celebrating after taking 2nd place at the spring quartet contest. A big THANK YOU to our coaches, Jana Gutenson, Emily O’Brien, and Kim Vaughn, and the sup-port of our choruses, Harborlites, Scotts-dale, and Golden Sands. The Sistahs began the new year by sharing our wit and song at the Agoura Hills Chorus (Region 11) annual quartet matching and a Harborlites Chorus performance at the Covington Center. We then started our journey for the upcoming year with a planning session with Kim Vaughn. Whew, just when we thought we were going to relax a bit! We managed to sneak in a little fun, by hosting a sleepover during Men’s Inter-national at the Robertson Bed and Breakfast. Lots of wine, women, and song! We have se-lected several new pieces of music and can’t wait to share them with the barbershop world at Summer Sizzler (Region 11, July 26-28) and Camp Ringing Pines (Region 21, August 9-11). After the summer months we will be doing the Golden Sands Show with Touche’ and Nightlife on September 21st in Long Beach, a youth festival with the Pacific Belles Chorus

We had the pleasure of coaching with Dale Syverson, Darlene Rogers, and Melanie Wroe prior to Regional contest and are coaching with Dale, Cindy Hansen, and Jana Gutenson over the next few months as we continue our preparations. We want to thank Nancy B for being our in-house coach and for always being there for us...and YOU, our friends, who are so loving and supportive.

A catered Hawaiian dinner, beautiful Polynesian dancers, a DJ, CONTEMPO, and a number of other quartets (men’s and women’s) who will entertain throughout the evening – WHAT A DEAL! Stop by our table at Summer Seminar and check out our stuff! We’d love to chat and maybe sing a song. We’ll also have tickets for the Luau available.

Woo Hoo...Pandemonium is SO excited to be your current Region 21 3rd place quartet! Thank you for all your support. What a thrill it is to start our journey out that way. We have been busy since contest. Pandemonium had the honor and privilege to mic test Region 12 quartet contest in mid-April. What a TERRIF-IC bunch of warm friendly women! Then, at the end of May, we worked and sang at the 7th Annual Harborlites Harmony Golf Classic. If you have not been to one, it is a “MUST GO – FUN” event! As Fall rapidly approaches, we shift some attention to two of the four chorus-es we represent – San Diego and Scottsdale. The ADP Retreat drew record attendance (18 people) at this year’s retreat, held in Tucson June 14-16 at the Hilton Tucson East, which proved to be a far superior venue for the event than the previous location. Attendees came from 5 regions, 2 countries, and the distance spanned from South Carolina to Japan to take part in classes offered by the ADP staff on song selection, a review of terms and BBS’s 11 chords, choosing a key, intro and tag creation, chord substi-tution, hands on arranging and individual arranger mentoring. The group fin-ished two group songs, “Pat on the Back/Good Day Medley” and “Me Minus You,” which will be available soon for inclusion in our Tin Pan Alley songs and will be submitted to International for possible publication. There was even fun singing each other’s arrangements on Sunday morning.

Summer Seminar plans have been laid to finish our most recent group song, “An Earful of Music,” which also will be made available for Tin Pan Alley singers and possible publication. You will be hearing more about new stages for pick-up quartets and double quartets to sing at our regional events, roaming the hallways and opening classes. The groups no longer will have to be established quartets, and you will soon be hearing from your directors about this opportunity.

Don’t forget that the ADP now has a one-on-one mentoring program available for aspiring ar-rangers. If you are interested, please contact me for more information at [email protected].

–Anna Maria Parker, ADP Coordinator

Hello Region 21! We would like to thank you for your con-tinued support and interest in the educational opportunities we have in this region. Our first Annual Stage Days were utter successes! There were so many talented performers (in quartets, and not) that got up there and gave it their all. What an opportu-nity to get individual and quartet instruction and coaching from

some of the region’s finest educators. We have so very much to be proud of! If you missed those stage days, don’t worry! We have more scheduled next year. Mark your calendars now. We will be having two, just like last year; one in Arizona on Janu-ary 18, 2014, and one in California on January 25th, 2014. We’re busy making plans for more opportunities for this amazing re-gion. Remember, it is your generous support of Club 21 events that enables us to assist our quartets (who represent us so well) and create educational experiences to create better singers in us all! It’s an exciting time to part of this wonderful region!

–Monique Manifold, Club 21 Secretary

We’ve got the music in us and, as a tight-knit, enthusiastic chorus, we’re push-ing ourselves to grow and improve. Our size has afforded more members to be involved in our many activities and try new management positions. Our focus has been strengthened, beginning with the end in mind and being deliberate in everything we do. “It Don’t Mean a Thing If You Haven’t Got That Swing,” so we’ve begun viewing and discussing DVDs of other choruses’ performances and then reviewing judges’ leveling comments. Mini-classes in vocal produc-tion in areas such as resonance, voice projection, and synchronization are be-ing offered by our director and music team. Our quartet promotion team has been hard at work and we currently have six performing quartets.

In May we were guests of a young women’s a cappella group, On Q Chorus, on their show, PRETTY IN PINK. Ten percent of their proceeds went to the Breast Wishes Fund, which empowers women through holistic breast cancer education. In June we provided scholarships for Shannon Goldrick and Emma Lederer to attend Duke City Sound’s Youth Harmony Camp.

We are sticking to a challenging schedule of learning new songs for our upcoming September 21st show, “I’ve Got The Music

Two SOTP members received tremendous recognition for accom-plishments outside their chorus life. Reva Fredericksen was named employee of the year for Las Fuentes Care Center AND SOTP’s SA

of the Year. Carol Brown was named to the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame. Sadly, the loss of 19 of our Hot Shot Firefighters and destruction in Yarnell, a little town just down the road, has set us all reeling. We are happily learning new music while enjoying each other as much as ever. What pleasure our social lives with our extend-ed family provide!

Ooh La La has an exciting announcement to make. We are thrilled to be adding our name to the list of Region 21 compet-ing quartets in 2014.

The lazy, hazy, monsoon-drenched days of an Arizona summer have predictably descended once more on Sedona. Our northern “snowbirds” have left, not to migrate here again until the fall. Un-til then, Red RockAppella has reverted to a “summer rehearsal” schedule, with moderate, slower-paced rehearsal evenings and an occasional dark night.

Our annual installation dinner in the spring includ-ed a personalized “TAB” (Thanks A Bunch!) award designed and presented by director Sandy Wingate. Special recognition to each member for vocal improve-ment or leadership or a job well done is a nice perk of a small chorus. Additionally, Jan Taylor and Sue Williams received the Director’s and President’s awards respectively.

In May, we said goodbye to charter member Lois Lanphere, who moved to the Seattle area, and chapter president Diane Pimentel, who relocated to northern California. Both have joined chapters in their new cities and will be valued assets to their new choruses (but, oh, how we miss them). In June, we greeted new member Jennifer Harris, a strong and welcome addi-tion to our bass section.

Our annual concert at a local Sedona Fourth of July Family Fes-tival celebration, which we always enjoy, was received jubilantly by the flag-waving, happy audience.

The dreamy days of summer will soon be behind us, and we’ll re-turn to our regular patterns of polishing up old songs and learning new ones, sharpening vocal skills and improving our chorus blend, readying ourselves for late summer and fall performances, and pre-paring for a membership drive in September.

Westwind Harmony chorus has relocated to Lord of Life Lutheran Church at 13724 W. Meeker Blvd., Sun City West, Arizona. Our new extended re-hearsal hours are from 7:00 - 9:30 pm Monday evenings.

A huge “thank you” to our costume committee and especially to Marsha and Bill Shaw for making our new beautiful blue scarf tops. Yes, he makes cos-

tumes too. How awesome is that!

In June, our team lead-ers announced to our chorus that we were going to have a roundtable dis-cussion to set some short and long term goals for

Westwind Harmony. Topics included: what type of chorus would we like to be, (performance, competition, or both) and what kinds of barbershop songs and arrangements interested us. We also discussed different ways to learn our songs (more sectionals, learning tapes) and should we extend our rehearsal hours. It was great to see our members become involved and hear all the posi-tive feedback. After two years we also had to amend our standing rules. Many amendments have been revised. Thank you to our team leader, Diane Lalley, for all your diligent work. Westwind also has new informative handouts, ap-plication forms, policies and regulations for new members. Our team leaders have been busy.

July means getting ready for Camp Ringing Pines. We expect our chorus to be well-represented this year. We are taking advantage of our wonderful directors, Lori Lyford and Pam Pieson. We are looking forward to a fun and educational weekend where we will meet new friends. Yours in harmony.

In Me.” We may not have all the music in us yet, but we’re working diligently. “We Ain’t Misbehavin’ ” and “The Joint is Jumpin’ ” every Monday night at re-hearsal. We can’t wait until we say “At Last” we have our music mastered and we’re ready to perform.
