Greetings, on behalf of the Pulp & Paper Foundation!

It has been my honor to serve as President for the past year, and I’m pleased to report that the Foundation is strong and getting stronger! It has been GREAT to have Jennifer Piercy on board for just over a year now, as the Executive Director of the Foundation. Jennifer has quickly made a difference and has been willing to take on anything and everything that has come her way. Her efforts are reflected in the statistics regarding the financial health of the Foundation, as well as the quality and quantity of the incoming Freshman class!

We’ve been very busy this past year, preparing for the future. It was easy when it came time to select a theme for this year’s Annual Meeting! Literally the day after the conclusion of the 2012 Annual Meeting, we held the first meeting of the ad hoc Mission Review Committee. That group met six times, solicited input and feedback from other Board members, alumni, faculty, administrators, and students, and produced some excellent work. Some of this will be discussed at our 2013 Annual Meeting. Many exciting new initiatives have been put into motion, which will produce results over the coming months and years. I know you’ll be pleased to hear about the work of this talented group of dedicated Foundation members! Here’s a glimpse into some of the activities:

* Reviewed the history of the Foundation, and asked ourselves some tough questions; why was it formed? What has it accomplished over the years? Is it still relevant? Should we continue?

* Completed a detailed “SWOT” analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats), which was very insightful and identified a number of things we do well, and things we need to work on improving.

* Conducted some benchmarking against other similar programs and foundations.

* Listened carefully to alumni, friends, faculty, staff, administrators, and students.

* Updated our messages (striving to do a better job of explaining to others what we do and why we do it…).

* Reaffirmed what we stand for and our goals for the future!

The excellent news is that we undertook this introspective journey from a position of strength. As you’ll see in remarks elsewhere in this Annual Report, both the program and the Foundation are on solid ground and growing, in terms of student enrollment, membership, and funding. You’ll see that standing Committees have been re-energized and we have great leadership on each of them. This continues to be the premier program for Paper Science and Engineering in the world, and we intend to keep it that way!

Page 5: 2013 Pulp and Paper Foundation Annual Report

I encourage you to plan ahead to join us for the 2014 meeting, when we will celebrate our 60th year as a Foundation! As I start my final year as President, I’m pleased to report the Foundation is presently in good shape and is well-positioned for the future!

Thanks again to all the corporate members, alumni, friends, and volunteers who make this all possible.

PAST PRESIDENTS

Page 6: 2013 Pulp and Paper Foundation Annual Report

The College of Natural Resources (CNR) has a proud history at NC State University, going back almost 85 years to its origins as a School of Forestry in 1929. We have expanded and grown over the years. Today we are a multidisciplinary College whose research and outreach programs create jobs and economic value across North Carolina and around the world.

CNR is proud to serve the pulp and paper industry and the more than half a million private forest landowners that provide the raw material for this industry.

This past year, our College undertook a strategic planning process, to build on our strengths and position us for the coming decade. CNR will continue to offer programs in areas of strength, including paper science and engineering. We will not diminish or step away from what we do well. But we will also grow new partnerships and collaborations that will address the increasingly complex “grand challenges of society.” These challenges demand a systems approach, with transdisciplinary perspectives and methods of analysis. They form the basis for several new themes the College will pursue. Our vision is to become the “go-to” place for solutions to natural resource challenges in both the built and natural environment.

One of those new themes we have labeled “sustainability solutions.” At its essence, sustainability refers to a way of living that ensures we leave our environment as good or better than we found it, so future generations have the same opportunities that we do today. The concept of sustainability is perhaps most valuable as a framework for making difficult choices in a world where resources are finite and many conflicting social, economic, and environmental goals must be balanced. There is no single “engineering solution” that will provide a sustainable future; instead a constantly evolving series of trade-offs reflects our values and our commitment to a different kind of future. The paper industry knows this, and has lead the way in thinking about new business processes that consider the future.

Across the campus, NC State excels in technologies and innovation that can be applied to the practical challenges of sustainability. Our College is uniquely poised to build collaborations across NC State and with the private sector to develop the tools necessary for envisioning and creating a different future. For example, CNR modelers have developed new techniques to bring social considerations into life cycle assessment, tools that consider the full array of environmental impacts and costs, from supply chain to end-of-product life. Our faculty have worked with a leading sustainable paper producer, Domtar, to turn a by-product of pulp production into a value-added and sustainable chemical additive, diverting it from the waste stream. Others have developed new approaches to sustainable and holistic management of forested landscapes where wood production, biodiversity protection, carbon sequestration, water management, food, recreation and other goals are all considered.

As we lead the development of a research portfolio that addresses the many aspects of sustainability, we will also continue to infuse sustainability across our curricula. In our paper program, we will expand from traditional renewable resources comparisons to consider sustainability more broadly, addressing energy, water, the resilience of rural communities, and other specific applications. We are striving to give all our students hands on experience, applying what they have learned in the classroom to real-world challenges. That will take strong partnerships with you! Together we can train a new generation of sustainability leaders and professionals that help keep our forests healthy, our businesses profitable, and our economies strong in North Carolina and the world.

As I reflect on the progress the Foundation has made in the last year, I am forced to look forward to what the future holds. We have made tremendous strides in 2012-13, that are setting us up for even greater accomplishments this year. We exceeded our goal for commitments to the Committee of 100 giving, increased our individual annual giving by 15%, and added three new foundation members and two new contributors. We have also completed a significant amount of work around our vision and mission review; along with how we can represent the great work we do to all of our “customers”. Overall, it has been a “banner” year! I owe a gracious many thanks to all those who have contributed to these results, in addition to my onboarding process. It was surely a team effort.

In keeping with this year’s meeting theme, “Preparing for the Future”, I too, have been thinking about how we should be positioning ourselves. What my job entails on a day to day basis is very hard to describe to industry veterans, let alone current or prospective students. In this role, I not only serve as the Executive Director of a Foundation that provides an immense amount of support for the Paper Science & Engineering program by working with corporations and alumni; but I am also the Director of Student Recruiting in charge of filling our freshman class every year. Close interaction with these students also positions me to aid in their development toward becoming a successful alumnus. Therefore, it is evident that my duties, along with alumni, foundation donors and supporters, as well as our students are to connect, cultivate, collaborate and contribute at NC State.

CONNECTWe are seriously looking to connect, re-connect and engage our alumni, friends, corporations and supporters. This also applies to my recruiting function as I connect with high schools and prospective students and their families. Alumni can, and have been, playing a major role here.

CULTIVATEIf there is one thing that everyone learns once they have experienced our foundation and program is that we do things differently here because we care! We enjoy hearing what all of our constituents and customers are doing and how things are going. This relationship building process is one of mutual discovery that enables us to impact each other for the better.

COLLABORATEMost people think of research when they hear this word. I am thinking at a higher level; where we are working

together to achieve a common goal. Whether this is for a student, an alumnus, a corporation, a donor, the foundation, or the program, we can work together through a variety of mechanisms to achieve success like never before.

CONTRIBUTEMoney. This might be the number one term that comes to mind when you hear the word contribute. Of course, we are

very grateful for our donors and would not be in existence if it were not for each and every one of you! However, I am also thinking of how we (the foundation and the program) can contribute to our industry and how industry contributes to

the success of our students and program in so many different ways (time, resources, guest speakers, equipment, and yes, money!).

EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE WORDS REPRESENTS A TWO WAY STREET!With your help, we can work towards goals and achieve success not only to benefit ourselves, but also to benefit our precious partners in this dynamic industry!

Are you ready? We are! Our commitment to you is to connect, cultivate, collaborate and contribute to your success. How will you help us with our success?

UPDATEAND ENGINEERING

The PSE program continued to grow this past year. We welcomed 34 freshmen for the Fall 2012 semester and, once again, a number of freshmen in other disciplines “saw the light” and decided to join PSE as on-campus transfers. A handful of upperclassmen (sophomores and juniors) also transferred into PSE, bringing the number of new transfer students to 11 for 2012-2013. The most common reason cited for transferring was “because I heard you can get a job with this degree!”. The growth trend continued for Fall 2013 as well. This year’s freshman class has 41 members!

The quality of the incoming students continues to be high. The average SAT score for the Fall 2012 freshmen was 1282, the average math score was 677, and the average weighted high school GPA was 4.53. This is a very talented group of students. However, rather than being a group of “bookworms,” many of them are funny and energetic, with a “can-do” attitude and an ability to work well in teams; the kind of students that typically make great PSE graduates. The diversity of the freshmen class continues to grow as well. The last two classes have been over 25% female!

Fall 2012 presented another frenzied recruiting season. Twenty-two companies visited our site over a 10-week period, seeking summer interns, co-ops, and permanent hires. A total of 424 interviews were conducted. Many thanks go to Pat Hill, our consummate professional, who kept the process working smoothly and made our company representatives feel welcome. Most graduating seniors received multiple job offers. Of the 23 graduates, 16 (70%) accepted offers in the paper and allied industries, 5 (22%) accepted offers in other industries, and 2 (8%) went on to graduate school or field service activities. This equates to 100% job placement at an average starting salary of $68,000 per year.

We continue to work on increasing the number of out-of-state students. This task becomes more challenging each year, as out-of-state tuition rates increase rapidly. We have two recruiting methods that continue to be successful:

* The Paper Super Scholar Program – This highly competitive program offers a “full ride” award to one out-of-state student. Out of over 15 applications, the Scholarship Committee selected eight outstanding candidates (from VA, FL, MD, KY and SC) and invited them to campus for a finalists’ weekend event. One student – Julia Woods of Maysville, KY – was awarded the full ride. Three other finalist were so impressed by our students and program that they chose to join us in PSE. Each will be receiving awards between $2500-$5000 per year.

* On-campus recruiting in the College of Engineering -- Each year, we promote our program to College of Engineering freshman. E101 class and information sessions targeted at Chemical Engineering intent or those yet Undecided, have been a great way for us to recruit talented in-state and out-of-state students. They are drawn to PSE because of our small program, hands-on learning, professional development opportunities and high job placement rates.

For last year’s freshmen class moving forward to the sophomore year, 12% were from out-of-state. For the new freshmen coming in for Fall 2013, 22% are from out-of-state. We thank our corporate partners who host in and out of state recruiting events.

Co-op positions continued to be plentiful, with more positions open than there were students to fill them. More and more students are doing at least one co-op rotation, with an increasing number doing so in the sophomore year. Summer internships are slowly returning to the pre-recession level. Nine freshmen (26%) were able to obtain internships for their first summer. While we, in PSE, understand that the industry values co-ops because of the longer duration (and the ability to assign beefier projects), we continue to stress that internships are still the best way for new students to get experience without affecting the academic progress. Our thanks go out those companies who maintain vigorous summer internship and co-op programs.

The summer of 2013 brought with it the fourth occurrence of the Paper International Experience (PIE). The goal of this program is to expose PSE students (juniors and seniors) to the paper industry and the

Page 9: 2013 Pulp and Paper Foundation Annual Report

culture of another country, in order to make them better global competitors and citizens. The students voted to return to China, the location of the first PIE trip in 2007, and the amazing Dr. Hou-min Chang was again able to work his magic. Based on his extensive contacts in China, in 12 days the students were able to tour five cities, three major paper mills, one paper machinery fabrication facility, two universities, and one research institute. But perhaps the most amazing part of the trip was the incredible generosity of companies, individual donors, and past PIE alumni – the students were able to raise over $45,000, making it possible for 21 students to participate at an affordable cost.

The PSE curriculum continues to change in ways to make our graduates even more competitive, while maintaining a core focus on pulp and paper. There are now three courses that address new industry trends: Green Chemistry (optional), Life Cycle Analysis (optional), and Bioenergy & Biomaterials Engineering (required). Basic paper physics was put back into the sophomore year (where it used to be), and the senior-level class that used to deal with that topic was changed into an “Advanced Process Tools” course. In the pilot of this new class, students were exposed to statistics, statistical process control methods, Lean/Six Sigma fundamentals, and PI Process Book and other data retrieval and analysis methods. The course will continue to evolve over the next year or two.

The “Wolfpack Baby” paper machine continues to be the heart of the hands-on teaching component of PSE. The machine has been upgraded in recent years and now features over 15 on-line sensors (including infrared temperature profiling in the dryer sections), a new digital control system, and a PI Process book graphical interface and data archiving system.

The continued strength and success of the Paper Science & Engineering program is due in large part to the sustained support, financial and otherwise, of our alumni, friends, and industry partners. Thank you for all that you do for us!

The lifeblood of NC State University is its students. The department of Forest Biomaterials recognizes our students’ motivation and dedication in their fields of study. We proudly invest a fair amount of resources to foster their development and creativity. The department is privileged to provide financial resources to students in the form of Natural Resources Foundation Scholarships that are used to offset and defray their tuition expenses. As most are aware, the Scholarship pool is augmented on a continuing basis by the generous donation of individual gifts, corporate gifts, student or faculty group giving, and the special “Committee of 100” initiative. All of the scholarships that we award recognize our students’ scholastic accomplishments.

Recently, the international journal, BioResources, founded by faculty members Lucian A. Lucia & Martin A. Hubbe, contributed to this Scholarship pool through direct annual installments of $15,000. Our undergraduate programs in Paper Science & Engineering (PSE) and Sustainable Materials Technology (SMT) benefit from these allotments because they are directly administered to our students by Undergraduate Coordinators.

The core mission of BioResources is to support the education of our students. The Editors are proud to administer, and announce for the first time, an award at the Departmental level to support the research efforts of aspiring undergraduate students. We are therefore pleased to introduce the “BioResources Undergraduate Research Fellowship,” which recognizes undergraduate students for their research aspirations and contributions. The Fellowship will allocate funds for undergraduate students to pursue a research project of their interest with the faculty of their choice. The program will administer funds in perpetuity for at least two students in Paper Science & Engineering or Sustainable Materials Technology per semester, who will each hold the title of “BioResources Undergraduate Research Fellow.” The Fellowship carries a stipend of up to $750/semester to worthy students on the basis of their interest, potential for success, and/or technical merit.

Students can be Fellows for 1-2 years. We encourage sophomores entering their fall semester to apply, but will also consider other worthy candidates. We hope that the title of Fellow will be an incentive to students who have shown meritorious activity in Departmental activities/coursework/journal and as an incentive to matriculate to the PSE & SMT programs. There will be a wooden plaque displayed permanently in the department to recognize these fellows. At the end of their tenure, we expect our Fellows to write a publication-worthy document that will highlight their research accomplishments as Fellows and acknowledge the support of BioResources.

BioResources is pleased and honored to provide the Fellowships. These fellowships will not only honor selected students, but also enhance their career opportunities, serve as a mechanism to excite prospective students, and support the research infrastructure of the Department of Forest Biomaterials.

We are pleased to announce our outstanding, inaugural recipients for the fall of 2013: Ms. Emily Walsh and Mr. Luke Hansen (pictured above).

Page 13: 2013 Pulp and Paper Foundation Annual Report

On May 13, 2013, twenty juniors and seniors embarked on an adventure called the Paper International Experience, also known as PIE. On this twelve-day adventure, students and faculty visited Shanghai, Suzhou,

Nanjing, Jinan, Beijing, three paper mills, three universities and a fabrication facility. Along with exploring the international side of the paper industry, students were able to engage in a new culture, including interacting with students in other paper programs, eating a bizarre range of foods, and tough bargaining in the marketplace. This

was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to gain a better understanding of the paper industry as a whole and further the student’s professional development.

This year was the fourth occurrence of the PIE trip and the second time students have visited China. In China, the paper industry has rapidly grown over the past few decades and continues to be on the rise. One contributing factor to the growth is the availability of new technology for recently constructed mills. It is not likely that within these

students’ professional careers will they see a mill constructed in the United States, whereas China is continuously building. The PIE trip has allowed each of these students to see a growing part of the industry as well as make comparisons to the mature industry in the United States.

Along with the two trips to China, students have also visited Brazil and Chile. The overall goals of PIE are to give students a significant international experience at a reduced cost, expose students to a significantly different

culture, visit manufacturing facilities with modern technology, and challenge students to think about how the mature U.S. industry can compete more effectively with the rapidly-growing industry in other countries.

Although these goals seem quite ambitious, it was evident that the students, through this PIE 2013 trip to China, met and exceeded each goal.

A special thanks is extended to everyone that helped make this trip achievable for the students. Contributions from industry, foundations, and past PIE alumni helped the students raise approximately

$45,000. Another special thanks goes out to Dr. Hou-min Chang for all of his help in planning the trip and coordinating with the facilities and universities that the students visited. Without all of

this support, this amazing educational and developmental experience would not have been attainable for these fortunate twenty students and future young professionals.

PSE Student Volunteers for International Service Project

When Sustainable Health Enterprises (SHE) needed someone to travel to Rwanda and help women and girls in need, PSE junior Tyson Huffman answered the call. He is currently in Rwanda for eight weeks, helping to start up a pilot line to make feminine hygiene products from locally-grown banana tree stems.

SHE is a U.S.-based organization that seeks innovative solutions which can help improve the health and quality of life of women in developing countries. In Rwanda, commercial feminine care products are too costly to be practical, but girls and women without them are discouraged from going to school or work when having their menstrual cycle. They therefore get behind and become marginalized in this, and many other societies around the world. Working with Dr. Med Byrd in a multi-year research project, SHE has developed a simple and low-cost process which turns banana tree stems into a highly-absorbent fluff material suitable for hygiene products.

The process was proven on a bench scale at NC State, and pilot-scale equipment was purchased and shipped to Rwanda to start production. The challenge was finding someone to run the operations who understood working with fibrous materials, was familiar with machinery and electrical equipment, and was brave enough to make the trip. Enter Tyson Huffman -- a North Carolina farm boy who served in the Marines. Tyson said he had been waiting all his life to do something similar to this to help people in need.

Tyson has been making good progress, while diplomatically navigating the radically different culture and work style in Rwanda. In his last progress report, he wrote, “The Marines have landed and the situation is well in hand.”

We are proud that NC State, our department and one of our students, are making strides for the inclusion of women and improvement of their health and hygiene all over the world! Stay tuned for more information about this great story.

DR. ORLANDO ROJASAMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY FELLOW:

Dr. Orlando Rojas has been selected as a Fellow by the American Chemical Society (ACS).

Each year ACS selects about 100 Fellows from its 160,000 members. Dr. Rojas is only the fifth NCSU faculty to receive this honor, and the first from the College of Natural Resources.

The ACS Award guidelines state that “The selection of ACS Fellows is based on documented excellence and leadership in BOTH of two areas: (1) science, the profession, education, and/or management, AND (2) volunteer service in the ACS community.”

Dr. Rojas’ award specifically recognizes his scientific accomplishments in the ‘investigation of physicochemical properties and assembly of plant-based biopolymers at interfaces and fiber nanostructures. Contributions cover fundamental aspects of the chemistry of natural resources.”

His nomination by an international team of fellow scientists noted that “Dr. Rojas has motivated and inspired students from around the world”. Over the past nine years he has supervised or co-supervised 22 graduate students, including 20 Ph.D. students. He has also served as a committee member for 49 Ph.D. students in 6 different NC State departments and other leading Universities in the US and overseas. He has hosted and mentored more than 27 international visiting scholars, professors and students sponsored by exchange programs and Fulbright fellowship recipients; they have come from Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, Japan, Germany, Korea, Finland, Chile, Spain and Argentina.

His “volunteer service in the ACS community” includes his leadership in Cellulose and Renewable Materials (CELL) division, where over the past seven years he has served as Program Chair, Chair, Past Chair, Alternate Councilor and Councilor. Under his leadership, CELL has forged new partnerships with European Polysaccharide Network of Excellence, TAPPI, and among several ACS divisions.

His service has also embraced diversity and inclusion for all students. He is the faculty advisor for the NC State chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and participates actively in SHPE national activities: attending their national conferences and delivering workshops to students in professional development sessions.

Dr. Rojas’ recognition as an ACS Fellow highlights both the quality of his scholarship, and his dedication to students and learning. Dr. Rojas has also been recognized by the NC State University Faculty Scholars Program. His international scientific leadership has been highlighted by his appointment as a “Finland Distinguish Professor” by the Academy of Finland.

Congratulations Dr. Rojas!

Page 16: 2013 Pulp and Paper Foundation Annual Report

Growing up in Western NC, I had not ventured out of the state more than a couple of times in my life and only for family beach trips or other vacations. My first employment after graduation was with Vinings Industries. With Vinings, I had an opportunity to travel to different mills throughout North America while living in Louisiana, Charlotte, and Atlanta. From the beginning, I realized that I enjoyed meeting different people in different areas who I had something in common with - the Pulp and Paper Industry. After six years with Vinings, I left for an opportunity with AkzoNobel, a large Dutch Company giving me my first experiences outside of North America. Once again, I had the opportunity to travel, meeting people with a common interest.

In my current position as Global Business Development Manager with AkzoNobel, I work on pulp and paper projects throughout the world. I recently great opportunity to travel to north, central, and southern Europe, South America, Thailand, and Korea, bringing value to my company and once again, meeting people with the same thing in common - the Pulp and Paper Industry.

I had no idea when I received my degree where I was headed. I would never have envisioned that I would enjoy traveling beyond the southeast US. It’s been a fun and rewarding career allowing me to meet a lot of great people and see a lot of great sites. Without my ChE/PPT degree, I can’t imagine how the same opportunities would have presented themselves.

In 2008, I graduated from the paper science and engineering program at NC State. This program has allowed me many opportunities. The professors and staff within the college are excellent and this program allowed me to attend a large school, but still get that family feeling. In the Paper Science program, I made great friends, had a lot of fun, learned so much, was given leadership experience, went to China, had wonderful internships, and started my senior year with a job offer. What more can you ask for?!

I cannot say enough about how wonderful and supportive this program is of all of it’s students. It is now my pleasure to return and recruit the students in this program to the paper industry. I am never surprised at the wonderful students NC State is turning out. A special thanks to each and every one of you who make this program special!

My experience in Forest Biomaterials, thus far has been amazing. Thanks to our program’s intense focus on professional development and the strong support of the industry, I have already had several incredible work experiences which have taught me so much. My first was a co-op with RockTenn in Fernandina Beach, Florida. As a process engineering intern, I learned the opportunities and challenges of working in a packaging mill. I was able to see the paper making process from beginning to end and even learned to tolerate the smell of sulfate turpentine. This past summer I had the opportunity to intern as a field service engineer with EDT in Norcross, GA. During the internship, I learned the importance of value based selling, and how to effectively analyze data in order to reduce costs for a mill. This job also exposed me to the industry outside of the US. I had the opportunity to work in mills in both Canada and Austria! These experiences have challenged me to apply the skills I have gained here at NC State and make me excited to come back and continue my education.

Pat LeasureSenior

My name is Patrick Leasure and I am a senior in Paper Science and Chemical Engineering. One of the amazing advantages of the Paper Science program is the amount of hands-on learning and professional development skills that are applied in the curriculum. I have worked for PCA in Valdosta, GA for 11 months and MWV in Covington, VA for 3 months. Being a TAPPI member has opened up doors to connections within the industry and amazing friendships that will carry throughout my life.

Michelle BloodSenior

Paper science has been quite the experience for me. Between co-ops, internships, PIE, TAPPI events and academia, the program has kept me busy and given me experiences I will never forget. My most recent work experience was with Ashland, in the Water Technologies division. Previously, I have done 2 co-op rotations with PCA in Valdosta, GA and 1 summer with Rayonier in Jesup, GA. All experiences have taught me so much and I feel extremely prepared to start a full time job in May 2014. This past May, I had the experience of a lifetime in China with PIE (Paper International Experience). We spent almost two weeks exploring the Chinese paper industry, academia, and culture. It was definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity. Thank you to the Foundation and its supporters for providing a basis for the opportunities PSE students are given.

In our department, and specifically in the paper science and engineering program, we consider ourselves one big happy family. Some of our current students have taken this to heart! Of course, there have been other family connections in our program throughout the years. This just gives you a glimpse of the current students in our program along with their family ties. It is truly amazing to have a program that comes highly recommended for almost 60 years. We are grateful for the students we have that are sent our way not only by family, but also by friends, donors and industry contacts. Each of you can have a tremendous part in sharing our legacy with others. And we thank you for it!
