Language and personal development

OISE courses are designed without compromise. They are structured with innovation and rigour. All aspects of performance in the language are evaluated with the aim of immersing the participants in different types of learning activities. These yield strong results by building the learners’ confidence in expressing themselves fluently in English with elegance and accuracy. The overriding objective is to give the learner sufficient confidence never to be at a disadvantage among other English speakers.

Constant opportunities to perform in English. Constant encouragement to practise the language within a study community of highly motivated language learners. It is in such a studious environment that participants are challenged and driven to exceed their own expectations and personal goals. Because of their focus on serious, concentrated study programmes, OISE schools are the preferred choice of the most ambitious and committed students.

for high achievers

The expertise, enthusiasm and sympathetic approach of the teaching team all combine to sustain the students’ effort and concentration making each lesson a productive and stimulating learning experience. Coming from diverse study and career backgrounds, they are able to offer instruction in a wide range of specialised areas of the language.

Teachers are chosen for their personal qualities and their ability both to engage the participants and facilitate the language learning process. They are trained to focus on the needs and weaknesses of their learner and to plan the structure and content of the lessons accordingly. The students therefore always receive tuition that is relevant and based on what they actually need to learn.

Tutorial Programmes: needs drivenTM

The Tutorial lesson, a teaching tradition of Oxford University, is one of the most effective methods of language learning.

Maximum effort and concentration

The entire course is conducted by means of individual tuition thus allowing the course to be adapted to the precise level and needs of each participant.

Tutorial tuition ensures that:

• the tutor devotes 100% attention to the student

• teaching methods are adapted to the learning style of the student, and to the pace at which the student can successfully learn

• individual weaknesses and specific needs of the student are addressed

• the course content is tailored to the student’s study or career objectives

• inhibited or reserved students receive maximum talking practice

• no time is wasted covering points already known to the student or of no relevance.

Examination skills

Students wishing to take an official exam are exposed to exam requirements with active practice on past papers under timed conditions to foster familiarity with the exam.

Individual lessons1 : 1

The personal language audit

A language audit carried out by the Academic Manager and the tutors at the beginning of each course determines the precise level, needs and objectives of the participant. This forms the basis of the student’s personal learning programme.

A balanced timetable

Each participant is assigned a team of tutors rather than just one tutor. Participants are therefore exposed to different teaching approaches as well as different personalities, voices and accents which help to sustain and stimulate concentration.

Specialisations

Tutorial tuition allows for specialisation in a comprehensive range of specific professional areas. These are taught by experts in their particular field. For a full list of specialist skills please see page 4.

Octorial Programmes: progress drivenTM

The Octorial programme develops a fluent use of the language in a learning environment conducive to high achievement.

Focus on language improvement

The day is divided into a number of sessions, each one with a clear language improvement focus and each one delivered in the learning environment most likely to achieve the learning goals. The programme is based around Octorial lessons (maximum 8 participants per class) which are designed to concentrate on stimulating accurate reactions so that the use of the language rapidly becomes instinctive.

A small learning group for rapid progress

The structured programme enables students to make fast progress. The day starts with a plenary session in which students practise presenting information concisely. The combination of Octorial lessons and workshops enables students to develop their knowledge, skills and confidence. Individual needs are identified and clarified, and each day students work on these in the Masterclass session. The closing plenary revisits and reviews learning, so aiding memorisation.

Examination skills

Students wishing to take an official exam are exposed to exam requirements with active practice on past papers under timed conditions to foster familiarity with the exam.

AccommodationHomestay

To maximise the opportunities for speaking the language, OISE has a policy of never allowing two students of the same mother tongue to stay in any one host family. All students have a single room. Each host family is selected and monitored according to strict criteria laid down by OISE. Houses must be comfortable, the hosts welcoming and, above all, genuinely interested in receiving students and helping them to develop fluency in the language.

College

This option is ideal for those requiring more independence and who wish to experience the unique atmosphere of college life. Some colleges are historic buildings set in beautiful grounds which offer students a peaceful environment conducive to study and relaxation. Some are modern premises offering city centre locations and practical convenience. If you wish to stay in college (July and August only except for London which is all year round) please add the supplments listed below to the course price.

Residential training centre

Fully residential programmes take place in OISE at Sherbourne Priors which offers every comfort for residential English language training.

Hotel

OISE recognises that some students would rather not have to adapt to living in a host family and prefer to stay in a hotel. Over the years each OISE school has built up a good relationship with a range of hotels of various categories and can make a reservation on the student’s behalf. If you wish to stay in a hotel

*one way ** returnPlease note: airport bus and train prices are approximate

EntertainmentOISE is committed to making each student’s stay as culturally and socially enriching as possible. Each school provides a carefully organised programme of events. Typical activities include theatre and cinema visits, tour of the town, visits to museums and art galleries, visits to cafés, and lectures on history and literature.

or if you do not need OISE accommodation, please deduct £225/$385/A$440 per week from the course price and contact us for our list of recommended hotels. The hotel reservation is made by OISE but the bill is settled directly by the student to the hotel.

In the case of registration less than 6 weeks before the course starting date, the full amount of the cost of the course must be sent with the Registration Form. PLEASE NOTE: students will not be allowed to start their course unless FULL PAYMENT has been received by the School. All bank charges must be paid by the student. PLEASE NOTE: if you require a visa the school will provide the visa letter or Certificate of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) only when full payment has been received by the school. All bank charges must be paid by the student. In the event of an unsuccessful application all fees will be returned in full, less the cost of the CAS.

Accommodation addressAccommodation begins on the Sunday before the course starts and finishes on the Saturday after the course ends. Students who have requested the School to book host family accommodation on behalf of the student will receive details of their host family address at least 5 days before the course starting date, unless they enrol late. This enables those students travelling independently to let the host family know of their approximate time of arrival.

Conditions for cancelling or changing a course by the Student• If the School receives the cancellation before the course starting date, the School will retain the deposit.• After the course has started, a student must give 10 days’ written notice to the Principal of changes to or cancellation of a course. A

cancellation fee equivalent to 1 week’s course fees will be charged. Refunds cannot be made for non-attendance, absence due to illness or any other cause.

• If a student wishes to be absent from the course for 1 or 2 weeks for the purposes of taking a holiday s/he must give the Principal at least 2 weeks’ notice in writing.

• Students who choose to exchange their original choice of course for one of greater value must pay the difference between the two at the time of requesting the upgrade.

• Any refund due when a course is changed or cancelled, or a holiday taken, will be paid to the person who paid for the student’s course at his/her home address at the end of the course. ‘End of the course’ here is defined as the last date of the course specified on the booking form (i.e. if a student books a 12 week course and decides to leave after 4 weeks s/he will not be refunded until 12 weeks after the start of the course).

• If a student is denied a student visa or study permit and provides the School with a copy of the rejection letter on or before the first day of classes, the School will refund the course fees.

Change or Cancellation of a course by the SchoolSometimes it is agreed between the School and a student that it would be beneficial for the student to be moved to another School course. When this happens only a course of at least equivalent cost will be offered by the School. The School reserves the right to cancel a course, or make changes to course arrangements, without liability, if forced to do so for reasons beyond its control. If this happened, the School would seek to offer alternative arrangements, dates or venues. If the School cancelled a course booked and paid for by a student in accordance with these terms other than for reasons beyond its control, and did not offer an alternative acceptable to the student, the School would pay compensation as follows: • Where the cancellation is before the start of the course, compensation equal to the deposit paid by the student or• Where the cancellation is after the start of the course, compensation equal to one week’s fees.

Liability and InsuranceStudents should make sure that they organise their own travel insurance to cover medical costs and repatriation costs in the case of an illness or accident.

The School acts only as an intermediary between its students and travel organisations and between students and host families. Unless and to the extent caused by the School’s negligence, the School cannot be held responsible for any delay or accident during a journey nor for any incident which may happen during the student’s stay with the host family. The School will, however, endeavour to defend the student’s interests in the event of breach of contract on the part of the travel organisation or the host family.

The School reserves the right not to allow on the course a student suffering from any illness, medical condition, or mental or physical disability which has not been disclosed on the Registration Form.
