Letter from the Minister

Dear Friends,

November, and the dark nights and dampness ofautumn are here. Curtains are drawn, fires areon, and we snuggle happily in our comfort.Advent will soon be upon us – are we ready? Advent is a time whenwe prepare for the coming of Jesus. We look to the past as wecelebrate the birth stories found in Matthew and Luke; weconsider the present; and we look to the future as we remindourselves to watch for all the times that Jesus comes to us in oureveryday lives. The “advent” or arrival of Jesus is what the fourweeks leading up to Christmas are all about.

In Matthew 11, when John the Baptist was in prison, he sent hisdisciples to Jesus with the following question, “Are you the Onewho is to come or should we look for another?” Instead of saying

“yes” or “no” Jesus turns the question back upon John’s disciplesand ultimately, upon us. Jesus says, “Go and tell John what youhear and see: the blind receive their sight, the deaf hear, thedead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.”

Jesus suggests here that the Realm of God is the kind of placewhere lives are changed. And he offers some concrete examplesfor us to recognize the changes in our midst. As I look at Jesus’examples I am reminded of the work of the church, of our visionand mission statements (to be found within this magazine!) and thepromises we have made to be God’s people in this place.

As Advent approaches, let us all be prepared to spread the GoodNews of Jesus, invite others to our church, encourage others tobe involved, to take part in outreach activities, and make Advent awonderful time for us all.

May God bless us richly this Advent.

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL 2013

This year the Church has chosen the Kent Association for the Blind asthe charity for our Christmas Tree Festival.

KAB supports sight impaired people to live independent lives. The charity feels that anyone who has a sight impairment should beable to live a fulfilled, healthy and safe life, exercise self-determination and make informed choices, and achieve their ownpersonal goals. The charity makes this a reality by providingcomprehensive support services to people of any age and at anystage of the sight-loss journey. KAB works in Bromley, Bexley, Kent, and Medway.

Registered charity: 1062345.

Editor’s footnote.KAB was the website of the month the April 2013 edition of Catalyst.

Working with KAB

I recently met with Karen Osborne, the chief executive of the KentAssociation for the Blind, and I asked Chris and Gill Wood to comewith me.

We asked for some of the proceeds of our festival to go towards thefunding of a computer expert who trains the blind to use a computerand also a telephone.

Gill is currently being taught to use a special type of computer for theblind, but regrettably there is not enough money to fund the trainer,Mike Peak, who teaches a number of blind people in this area for thelong term.

Possibly we also hope to fund a weekend break for some blind friendsfor a long weekend at the Torch Trust in Sussex. This would be inconjunction with the Hayes Community Bus. Torch Trust helps newlyblind folk and their carers come to terms with their situation and tooffer help and advice.

John Moren

Now, please turn to Page 11 for an appeal for help with lifts onthe 7th of December.

Also, don’t forget that Catalyst can be emailed to ourvisually impaired friends for them to read it on their computers.

Website of the Month

The Normandy Veterans’ Association(Wording taken from the Norwich Branch website.)

The object of NormandyVeterans.org.uk is to obtainand provide information of events which occur overand around the period leading up to the 70thanniversary of the Battle of Normandy, for thoseNormandy Veterans, friends, families and supporters

who are unable to obtain the information for themselves.Norwich and District was the third national branch .... to be formedand has been going since 1981. We are part of the NationalAssociation that was the idea of Arthur Foldman.Since its formation we have enjoyed the camaraderie and support ofnumerous people and organisations.

However, in this modern age of technology, we are eager toencourage the younger generation to learn about the efforts givenby those involved with the Normandy campaign. Many childrenhave grandparents who were involved and we are keen to express

“that there is no glory in war”. Our Schools initiative is an example ofour efforts in this.

The following poem was written by Robert Graves (1895-1985)in France in November 1915

1915.

I've watched the Seasons passing slow, so slowIn the fields between La Bassée and Bethune;Primroses and the first warm day of Spring,Red poppy floods of June,August, and yellowing Autumn, soTo Winter nights knee-deep in mud or snow,And you've been everything.

Dear, you've been everything that I most lackIn those soul-deadening trenches - pictures, books,Music, the quiet of an English wood,Beautiful comrade-looks,The narrow, bouldered mountain-track,The broad, full-bosomed ocean, green and black,And Peace, and all that's good.

Final ThoughtWe see signs of summer’s passing in golden leaves, shortening days, misty mornings, autumn glow.We sense its passing in rain that dampens, winds that chill, Harvest’s bounty placed on show.Creator, God of both green shoot and hoar frost, sunrise and sunset,we bring thanksfor seeds that have grown, harvests gathered, storehouses filled, mouths fed. And, as your good earth reststhrough winter’s cold embrace,we look forward to its re-awakeningwhen kissed by spring’s first touch.
