ARKANSAS AHPERD

NEWSLETTER Fall 2013

President’s Message…

Hello everyone! I hope your 2013-2014 school

year is off to a good start. My theme for the year

has been “LET’S MOVE ArkAHPERD”. We

have done a lot of moving forward. I am so proud

of our ArkAHPERD executive officers and

board. They have stepped up to look at how our

organization can MOVE IT in the right direction

and be more efficient.

At our 2013 Convention in Little Rock on Nov.

7-8 at the Embassy Suites we are excited about

our program and our future.

You will begin to see our new website; we are

streamlining our divisions, sections, job

responsibilities, and adding a chief financial

advisor so that we will have a better checks and

balance system in our organization. We have

added a Silent Auction chair Valerie Hilson from

Arkansas State University as an additional board

member. When your board is excited about

making these changes…we hope you will too.

I encourage you to continue working in your

school and your district to make aware of the need

for quality health and physical education. The

data supports our initiatives. I encourage you to

stay current with the latest changes and directions

in our professions.

Yes I said OUR professions… We need each

other….we need to support each other…..and

continue the fight for quality physical and health

education. I and many others will NEVER GIVE

UP!

Help ArkAHPERD Move It!

Sincerely,

Bennie Prince

Executive Director’s Message…

Greetings from the ArkAHPERD home office.

It has been an honor to once again serve as your

Executive Director. I have had the pleasure of

working with ArkAHPERD, Southern District

and National AAHPERD leaders in the

unification process of our national organization.

Your 2013 Alliance Assembly voted to unify the

AAHPERD organization. The intent is to bring

the national organization together and focus on

strategic areas of interest within our profession.

AAHPERD can now shift its focus from

structural challenges to addressing issues such as

obesity and inclusion of PE in the school setting.

The new AAHPERD will strive to spend time

and resources on issues relevant to physical

education and health. Expect major changes to

be announced at the 2014 AAHPERD convention

in St Louis. Please plan now to attend our state

convention for updates.

With the recently adopted new PE rules by the

Arkansas Department of Education physical

education could be greatly impacted in our state.

Your state ArkAHPERD has worked diligently to

preserve PE as a required subject. Your

President-elect, Bret Stone, serves on the state

committee responsible for addressing such issues

and reporting to the Governor. While the current

rules may allow PE to be taught by the classroom

teacher NOT certified in PE, we are working to

resolve this issue. At this year’s convention we

will provide details on the progress of the

campaign and future actions.

Finally, WE NEED YOUR HELP, it is time for

the 2013 State Convention. As ArkAHPERD

continues to grow and face challenges we need

you as a member. I ask that you be a part of the

ArkAHPERD family and attend YOUR

convention in November!!!

Sincerely,

Andy Mooneyhan
