Beaches

1. Suttons BayThose who like to gradually enter the water will love Suttons Bay’s marina beach, a favorite for families and those just looking to float in the particularly warm shallows. A playground, tables and grills make it easy to stay through dinner. Better yet, walk to one of the local pubs noted for gourmet burgers and a casual vibe. 231.271.6703.

2. Glen Arbor/Glen HavenHistoric Glen Haven offers a full vacation in a single stop, starting with a beach you can’t beat anywhere in the Great Lakes—at least according to Florida professor Stephen Leatherman, a ka “Dr. Beach.” He ranked it at the top for coastal dunes, fine sand and view of the Manitou Islands. On-site museum and old-fashioned general store add to the fun. From Glen Arbor, 2 miles west on M-109.

3. EmpireEnchanting dune bluffs rise to the north and south of this wide swath of sandy beach, making it one of the area’s most popular. The amenities don’t hurt either. A restroom, playground, picnic tables and grills help families out. When the big lake’s

too chilly to dive into, cross the parking lot to the small inland (and warmer) South Bar Lake. Follow signs from downtown.

Lake Leelanau Pick up a take-out picnic at NJ’s Grocery (the fresh-made samosas, perhaps) and head to this road-end local favorite beach. It’s a good spot for dropping in a line or launching a kayak, and then paddling the wildlife-filled channel connecting the north and south branches of Lake Leelanau. Head west from town on M-204 about a mile, right on Popp Rd.

LelandNorth Beach is a favorite for those who like to walk for miles, stopping along the soft sand path to collect a Petoskey stone or locally prized Leland Blue. (Stay along the water line to avoid trespassing.) Find books, picnic fare and sand toys in downtown Leland. Take North Street west toward the lake, and then follow a short trail to the beach.

OmenaAs close as an in-town beach can come to being a secret cove, this hidden gem

is found just past where the main road makes a sharp curve. Walk to pick up provisions at the old-timey general store. You feel away from it all, yet you are steps from waterfront dining and wine tasting. Sailboats often dock in the harbor, adding romance to your view. Off M-22 in Omena.

NorthportHaserot Park, Northport’s municipal beach, is located right downtown. The grassy park offers room for the kids to run, and it’s also a favorite for festivals celebrating wine or the classic fish boil. Your view is of the sparkling waters of Grand Traverse Bay beyond the marina. Walk the pier and gaze at the boats after a picnic and swim.

Elmwood TownshipThe nautical theme of the new play area is fitting on this beach alongside the Elmwood Township Marina. Picnic with the gang under the large shelters while the kids swing, whirl and slide on the creations of TV-show carpenter Carter Oosterhouse, a Traverse City native who has built more than 20 playgrounds through his Carter’s Kids charity. On M-22, just north of the M-72 intersection.

When Leelanau County locals want to show off their region, they bring guests first to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, most often starting at the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, which weaves through the dunes. A one-time logger, Pierce Stocking used to walk the spectacular bluffs and wanted to share the beauty with others. He envisioned a clever route that let the geographic drama gradually unfold.

A pull-off early in the route offers a distant peek of the ethereal blues of the Glen Lakes; another pull-off delivers views of an undu-lating dunescape with towering ridges. But we’re betting it was at the Lake Michigan overlook where Good Morning America viewers cemented their decision to name this park the Most Beautiful Place in America. Here, the dunes drop 450 feet steeply down into glit-tering Lake Michigan, and all the cameras come out—though few can capture the top-of-the-world feel.

Marvel at the tiny specks of people on the beach below, then work your climbing muscles at the Dune Climb—the main attrac-

tion for kids (of all ages) who love scaling its heights, then tumbling back down the soft sand.

The park’s beauty and fun unfold elsewhere, too, in ways both subtle and spectacular. Follow hiking trails to pinnacle overlooks—Empire Bluffs and Pyramid Point among the favorites. Canoe or kayak through the park on the gorgeous Platte or Crystal Rivers. Or travel back in time with a stop at Glen Haven, a tiny preserved town of museums and an old-time general store, adjacent to the beach recently named most beautiful on the Great Lakes. Fit it all in by setting up camp at popular D.H. Day Campground on the mainland, or escape to one of the rustic hike-in campsites on North or South Manitou Islands.

To visit the islands, buy ferry passage from Manitou Island Transit at the Fishtown Pier in Leland and map your daytime or overnight adventure: climb a lighthouse tower, hike to a shipwreck that pokes above the waves, wander the beach for hours. Pitch a tent at one of the 55 rustic campsites, rent a mini cabin, or make a day out of exploring the 8.5 miles of hiking trails at this state park, its lighthouse museum and hidden beaches near the north tip of Leelanau Peninsula. No pets are allowed on the shoreline, because the area is prime nesting ground for the tiny, rare piping plover. Spot them (from a distance)—and find blissful solitude—at secluded Cathead Bay, reached by a ¾-mile walk from the parking lot, over forested dunes nearly as enchanting as the sandy cove beach. This sum-mer, a traveling exhibit of 100 aerial lighthouse photographs debuts in the Fog Signal Building.

Wildlife watchers love Victoria Creek’s current, so slow that you can paddle the 3.5 miles to Lake Leelanau and back, listening en route to loons and watch-ing the sunning turtles and fishing herons.

Empire: The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (park headquarters is located in the lakeside hamlet of Empire) was recently voted the Most Beautiful Place in America by view-ers of Good Morning America. No surprise, then, that its wide sandy beaches and the coastal bluffs deliver some of the lakeshore’s most stunning views. Discover culinary delights in the Friendly Tavern, which highlights organic vegetarian delicacies and Grocer’s Daughter Chocolates, often named among the best in America.

Glen Arbor: Situated on a small strip of land between the Glen Lakes and Lake Michigan, Glen Arbor thrives as an iconic resort town. Cottages perch along the tur-quoise blue of Glen Lake, and the town bustles

with resort town fun—outdoor patios brought to life with live music, beach shop souvenirs, art galleries and the “world headquarters” of Cherry Republic, a tourist draw in itself that sells 100-plus items crafted from cherries.

Lake Leelanau: Situated along the nar-rows—the channel connecting North Lake Leelanau and South Lake Leelanau—this tiny town is home to remarkable vacation treats: a popular century-old resort called Fountain Point, a new wine tasting room on the water, an elegant Italian restaurant, farm stands, boat launch and some of the county’s winery favorites. Maple City: Originally called Pegtown Station, Maple City got its start as a shoe peg factory on several acres of maple timber. Tucked into the hilly country-

side, this small town is home to the eponymous Pegtown Station restaurant (acclaimed pizza) and a classic small town grocery with on-site smokehouse.

Northport: One of the area’s earliest settlements, the town perched at the northern tip of Leelanau County now houses art galleries, antique shops, res-taurants, an independent book store, rock shop, coffee shop, addictive bakery and new restaurants. Boaters love the harbor, visitors the surrounding vineyards and orchards, state park and beaches. Annual summer events include a classic fish boil, fishing derby and classic car show.

Omena: Blink and you’ll miss it, but that’d be a shame. This curve-in-the-road village boasts a U-pick flower garden, sweet sandy beach, notable art gallery, a pub that serves delectable fish and chips and has an adjacent winery tasting room.

Suttons Bay: This waterfront village teems with life come summer as visitors explore galleries, boutiques, restaurants, art theater and historic inns or head to the waterfront park for a day at the beach or festivals centered around art, food and wine. Midway up the Leelanau Peninsula, the town is near several wineries and bookends the Leelanau bike trail, which stretches 16 miles to Traverse City.
