Chaplin’s Corner

In the spirit of Freemasonry, it behooves all of us to consider our responsibilities to our breth-

ren. When we agree to help, aid and assist etc., we must include, whenever possible, our attendance at Ma-

sonic Memorials. I have attended a few such services, so few that I am now very sorry. In several of those

services the Masonic attendance was limited to those who took part in the ceremony and, perhaps, to a few

family and friends who may have been members of the Fraternity.

Especially here in Florida, where many services are performed at the request of family for members of lodges in

other jurisdictions, it would be more appreciated by the family were we to make a greater showing of brotherly love by

filling the small chapel with our presence.

Also consider the impression it would make on those non-members who might get the idea that joining a Lodge

might be an excellent way to honor their loved one!

Chaplin, Jim Reynolds

As I write this, I'm thinking back a little. The last Saturday in March I was accompanied by SW W:.

John Haas and JD Jeff Lamb to Melbourne, for the Zone 5 Masonic Leadership Training Seminar. Our first

meeting in April had me wearing my “tricon” (three cornered hat) again, in honor of those colonists who rose

up and challenged British rule in North America. Concord and Lexington "The shots heard around the world",

truly, the first big defeat the British ever had. Yes, Masons were involved in the forming of our country. From

Brother Paul Revere (silver smith) riding through the country side calling the “minute men” to arms. Ending

with General (Brother) George Washington (the gentleman farmer) accepting the conditions of surrender of

the British on behalf of the colonists in America. These United States from the start, very much like ourselves,

have had times of joy and sadness, plenty and not so plenty. Like us, times of anger and times of peace. Yet so

far, we the people have remained FREE. To this we have only a very few men and women willing to fight to

save these freedoms. When you see a member of our armed forces give them a “THANK YOU”, and don't be

bashful to thank the veterans who went before to serve this country.

On the 10th of April the Grand Lodge of Florida Held a Legislative Meeting in Zone 4 at Marion-Dunn

Lodge. This was to pass out the proposed Legislative changes that will be voted on at the Grand Communica-

tion held in Orlando. First, each Lodge will discuss these proposed changes. Then, during the Grand Lodge of

Florida Stated Communication 26 May thru 29 May, the three principle officers of each Lodge will vote the

will of their Lodges. All Master Masons may attend Grand Lodge but only those three officers will be eligible

to vote. Come and see how your Grand Lodge works for you.

May is one of our United States sad but remembered months. Memorial Day is a day of remembrance,

set aside to pay homage to those men and women who gave the ultimate price defending our FREEDOM.

God Bless All,

W:.M:. Jim Angelos

“Friend to Friend”

Brethren, this July marks the 150th anniversary of the battle of

Gettysburg. For those of you who are not familiar with the

significance of this battle it was the turning point of the Civil

War. The battle was fought over three days, ending in what is

known as Pickett’s Charge. Confederate General George E.

Pickett, a member of Dove Lodge #51, Richmond, VA, was to

lead a frontal assault against a well-entrenched Union Army

commanded by General Winfield Scott Hancock, a member of

Charity Lodge #190, Norristown, PA. One of the Generals

under Pickett’s command was Lewis Addison Armistead, a

Mason who was a member of Alexandria-Washington Masonic

Lodge #22, Alexandria, VA and a personal friend of General

Hancock. During the battle General Armistead is shot several

times. Lying on the ground and realizing his injuries were se-

vere, he calls out for help. No one answers. Next he gives the

Masonic Grand Hailing Sign. Union Captain Henry H. Bing-

ham, a doctor and member of Chartiers Lodge #297, Canons-

burg, PA, comes to his aid and tends his wounds. General Ar-

mistead, realizing he is mortally wounded and there was very

little the doctor could do for him, directs his concerns towards

his old friend Union General Hancock. The doctor tells Ar-

mistead that his friend has also been wounded but his injuries

were not severe. At this time General Armistead hands the

doctor his pocket watch and Bible and asked if he would pass

them on to his friend General Hancock. The doctor assures

him that he would pass those items along. General Armistead

died a few days later.

Brethren, you’ve often heard the Civil War was fought brother

against brother. Well, this was a story of how one Masonic

brother brought aid and comfort to another. It makes one won-

der what is it about our Fraternity that creates such a strong

bond that we are willing to put our differences aside and give

aid to one another. I believe it has to do with The Tenets of our

profession -- Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.

In Gettysburg Pennsylvania there is a monument that was com-

missioned by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania depicting Con-

federate General Armistead handing his watch and bible to

Union Captain Henry Bingham. It is known as the Friend to

Friend Masonic Memorial. A plaque on the back has this dedi-

cation: “This monument is presented by the Right Worshipful

Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania

and dedicated as a memorial to the Freemasons of the Union

and the Confederacy. Their unique bonds of friendship enabled

them to remain a brotherhood undivided, even as they fought in

a divided nation, faithfully supporting the respective govern-

ments under which they lived."

I happened to be there during the dedication of the monument

along with many other masons. It was a pretty impressive

sight. I’ve included a picture of the monument for your

viewing.

Hello again Brothers! I have much good news for you this month! We have a new man coming into masonry and two brothers coming in to the Lodge through transfer and demit! Mr. John M. Thomas has petitioned for the three de-grees and Bro. Dale Miller and Bro. Gary Towne have peti-tioned for affiliation. Let’s all make them feel welcome when we see them in Lodge.

Brothers we now have 46 sponsors for the Trestle Board and I am happy to say that we are growing! We only need 14 more sponsors to reach our goal and not use any Lodge funds to mail it out. The most recent monthly e-mail version is 14 pages and I hope to expand to 20 pages by the end of summer. That is, “if” you Brothers will give me something to put in it! I am very happy to include Bro. Jeff Lamb’s “Comedy Corner” this month because we all need a little humor in our lives especially if it pokes fun at ourselves and not others. I am sure some of you other Brothers have something you wish to say, so write it out and let me put it out there for all of us to see and hear. If you would rather get the e-mail version than the printed ver-sion, Please let me know by e-mail to [email protected] so I can take you off the print list and save the Lodge some money. Every penny counts Broth-ers.

How about our attendance in Lodge? Do you know of a Brother who might need a ride to Lodge? Who might attend if he just had someone to help him get there? If you are such a Brother and in need then please call the Lodge office at 352-787-5696 and leave a message with name and phone number so we can contact you. If you can provide a ride for a Brother please call and leave your name and number also and maybe we can get the two of you together and fill some seats in the Lodge. Also on the matter of attendance in Lodge, I have placed a survey that can be printed out and faxed or mailed in or dropped off to the Lodge on page 13. I hope all of you will take a few minutes of your busy schedule to fill this survey out and let your Lodge elected Officers know what they can do to make this Lodge better for you.

Don’t forget our Grand Lodge Communication at the end of this month. All Master masons are encouraged to attend. There is new legislation coming out that will affect all Brothers in our state. I will have a special edition of the Trestle Board coming out to you on this legislation so that you can read and decide for yourself how you want your officers to vote. If you wish to attend, please contact me so I can get your credentials sent in to the Credentials committee and you won’t have to wait for them when you arrive.

Hopefully, by now the new “specialty plate” for Ma-sons has been approved thanks to your support by sending in the letters to your Representatives and Senators. This is much needed funds that can be added to our Masonic Home Endow-ment Fund.

That’s it for this month Brothers. As always it is great to be your Secretary and communicate with you in Lodge and out of it. Don’t forget our Masonic Home is in need of our help and may God Bless our men and women in uniform, and keep them from harm.

Fraternally and respectfully,

WHank DeBerry

At our monthly dinner we served 75 paid in-

dividuals. We made some money which was then

put into the kitchen account. Now we have money

for the food for our next Saturday breakfast. We

have a wonderful crew in the kitchen and really

thank them all for their voluntary good work. Larry

is really the person who makes this all happen.

We have been busy in the Lodge kitchen tak-

ing care to bring it up to code. We had to get our

steam table changed so that it can shut off automati-

cally. We also added a lever to shut off the gas

manually where it comes in to prevent an emer-

gency. We are also repairing the stove so that our

pilot lights work. All this is happening this month of

April 2013. This will put us in code with the City of

Leesburg Utilities Dept.

Brethren, we need support to pay for all this.

We need more of you to come to our fun fundraising

breakfasts. Come out and socialize with the brothers

and enjoy a really great breakfast. I hope to see new

faces at breakfast the first Saturday in May from

8AM to 10AM, You ALL come out--you hear!!

“WHAT WILL YOU DO”

My brothers have you thought about what you will do

with the remainder of your estate after all your bills and

final expenses are paid. Have you considered leaving a

small stipend to your Lodge. We have had several broth-

ers leave a stipend to the Lodge. These have ranged from

a small donation to a large estate. We've had a brother

donated his estate which was sizable to the Masonic

home and our Lodge got credit for it. We've had brothers

leave us their estate and we did not even know about it

for several months. In one case the executor waited sev-

eral months to let us know, and several weeks before se-

curing the house. We were able to prove that, in that pe-

riod of time, several items were removed from the estate

such as Rolex watches, guns and large screen TVs. We

were never able to recover any of that material but the

executor did pay us a nominal $2000 fee. If we had

known that we were mentioned in the will we could have

done more due diligence and perhaps saved some of the

items. If you are considering leaving the Lodge a dona-

tion then tell the Secretary that the Lodge is mentioned in

your will. If you haven't left a donation to the Lodge and

you don't have plans for all of your estate then consider

leaving a token to our Lodge. This you may do by simply

adding a codicil (amendment) to your existing will. Your

officers have proven to be good shepherds of the trust

funds this Lodge has received.

GRAND MASTER

DISCOURSE

“Getting Back to Basics” Dear Brothers: As I read our history I often wonder if our prede-cessors would recognize us today as Masons. Sure we call ourselves Masons and we have many of the same things they had, but I just wonder if they would see us as Masons. The archives of Masonry have recorded many of our predecessors’ leadership skills and knowledge of Masonry these generations of Masons, were well grounded on the mission and vision of Freemasonry. They knew and under-stood the importance and responsibility of delivering pos-terity to a Craft that would be unimpaired from innovation. They are the Masons we revere but fail to imitate; they are the Masons we cite but fail to understand, they are the Ma-sons we were inspired by, but fail to see their purpose. Yet the answer to our future is well grounded in our past. The Masons of yesterday understood their duty and faithfully executed their obligations, this is why we admire and re-spect them, and when asked about famous Masons we cite them over and over again. Very seldom do we mention or even know a Mason that is contemporaneous with us that we can cite as a living legend or one that has recently passed. If we look at Freemasonry from the perspective of the leaders of yesterday one thing will ring true every sin-gle time and that is their passion for education, for self-improvement through knowledge, for practicing their ritual and for making Masonry a way of life. All of this while using the Holy Scriptures as our Guiding Light, the one indispensable book of knowledge we cannot function with-out and which so much of our ritual can be found in its pages. What we all need is a good dosage of “Getting Back To Basics” and we start this with accountability. If you are looking at taking on a committee appointment, place or station in your Lodge you will ask for direction and information on your new commitment that you may understand the responsibilities that you will enjoined in order that you can fulfill your obligations in this new posi-tion. Your new job description will be found in the Digest, Masonic Leadership Training, Masonic Education Booklets, Monitor, etc., and whether you can find it or not in these publications discuss your new found knowledge and responsibility with the person appointing you, your Mentor, or a learned Brother and how you will proceed in the discharge of your new obligations to ensure that you understand them correctly before executing your duties. Next we have to work on our Lodge, are we making our meetings interesting, are we delivering what the Brothers are looking for in our communications, do we have a user friendly atmosphere and are we giving value for the time spent by the Brothers in our Lodges. If you have not been doing this before today you may need to start by asking of the Brothers what they are looking for or you may want to take the leadership role and present different scenarios on

what could be added to enhance the Masonic experience at our meetings. With the exposure that Masonry has received in the differ-ent medias, our mysteries have received a lot of attention and many non-Masons have given them what they perceive to be our mean-ings, this has caused our Brethren to want to know more, the new Brothers to look into our mysteries and candidates to knock on our doors and what have we done about exposing our members to this subject nothing by far for the most part. There are many ways we can do this we can create a committee to bring presentations from learned Brothers in our Lodge, District, or in or out of our State to visit our Lodges and bring forth knowledge that we can all learn from and enjoy. We can couple this with a nice dinner or lunch well prepared and served appropriately to make this a special occasion that will attract the Brothers back to the next presentations. We are happy to see that more Brothers and Lodges are seeking this route and creating an interest with these seminars and are bringing in caliber speakers to present exciting programs full of information that make for an interesting program and create a quest for further knowledge and this is good for everyone involved. Let us regroup and find our roots, we need to be well grounded in our past in order to chart a course for the future and the past in Ma-sonry is not measured by the last ten or twenty years, that is not sufficient to see any changes in Masonry since it moves very slow. We need to look at cycles in order to properly compare and you will find many similarities which can teach us how to chart for our fu-ture considering our past. We need to solidify our ritual by improving on our accu-racy and delivery. Mentoring is paramount to our success and wher-ever practiced according to the guidelines it works, builds fellow-ship, and improves in knowledge. We need Officers that demon-strate that they care not by words but by deeds. We need Lodges that are financially viable. We need to have buildings that are invit-ing after all they are our windows to the outside world and speak volumes of who we are. We need to explore our past and revitalize our passion for our mysteries and cause in depth studies of them like our predecessors use to do that we can improve ourselves mor-ally and spiritually. There is no magic bullet and if we work collectively in-stead of trying to find the magic bullet independently we can cer-tainly improve our situation quicker. We can turn this Fraternity around sooner rather than later and if everyone would work together trying to find the solution instead of working twice as hard to being an obstacle we will be a lot better off. This notion that we continue to shoot ourselves in the foot just so that we can prove the others that are trying to do something good, but we don’t like, were wrong has lead us on the wrong path over and over again, and yet we don’t even realize what we are do-ing. Our quest for quantity has not been vanquished and many of the leadership continue to look for numbers coming in while ig-noring the numbers they already have, simply because they have geared for recruiting and never looked at the retention side. This needs to be a two prong program we take in only those qualified with an eye on QUALITY while we have the other eye on educa-tion of those we need to RETAIN by improving their Masonic Ex-perience. Respectfully and Fraternally Submitted, I remain your most humble servant

Leesburg Lodge would like to Congratulate Sister Linda Every on being elected Associate Grand Con-

ductress of the Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of Florida at the Grand Chapter meeting held in

St Augustine, FL on April 24th -26th. This is a wonderful accomplishment that is well deserved. Sister Linda

has worked tirelessly for Leesburg Chapter 84 OES as a Plural member, an officer and Past Matron of the

Chapter. She is a member of Tavares Chapter and has been a member of the Eastern Star since 1977, when

she was originally initiated in Umatilla Chapter. Born in the town of Mineral Wells, Texas she came to us in

Florida in 1969. She and her husband of fifty years (this May 15) Bob, started their business in Umatilla in

1978. She and Bob have two sons living in the Tampa area and one daughter in Umatilla who works in the

family business. In 1985, Linda stepped up and was elected Mayor of Umatilla to fill an unexpired term for

the office that had been left empty by the passing of the current mayor. Always an achiever in the Eastern

Star, she was named Grand Esther in 1996-97. She has held several offices in the Grand Chapter ranging

from District Chairman of several committees and funds, to State Chairman of R.E.S.T. committee, to The

Worthy Grand Matron’s personal secretary.

This is a picture of a lady driven to excel in all that she does and will be an asset to the Grand Chapter

line of Officers. We can expect great things over the next four years and we in Leesburg Lodge 58 and Lees-

burg Chapter 84 OES wish her all the very best in her future and on her road to the East.

Boy Scout Troop 1 News

Brother Dean Sever, Organizational Rep

Lamar Eury, Scoutmaster

Several events going on in April with the Scout

Troop. April 5-6 the Troop will be up in Fruit-

land Park for Fruitland Park day handing out water to the 5K

runners and will also have a booth selling Chick-fil-A for a

fund raiser while there. All Brothers and family are encour-

aged to stop by, introduce yourselves to the Scouts and help

them with their fund raiser.

April 19-21 the Troop will be camping out at the Dis-

trict Spring Camporee at Lake Geneva in Fruitland Park. The

theme this Camporee will be Space so all activities will be re-

volved around Space. The Troop was given former Astronaut

Brigadier General Charles Duke as part of their project to re-

search. Brigadier General Duke is an Eagle Scout and one of

the Astronauts who made Lunar Landings. Scoutmaster Velez

developed a card with the Astronauts picture and facts about

his Scouting, Military and activity with NASA.

Troop leadership has recently been busy updating

required training to be involved in Boy Scouting leadership

such as Youth Protection, which is required of all leaders.

Scout Ivan Marcial recently earned the Interpreter strip for his

uniform, the first to be awarded in our Troop, for proficiency in

Spanish. Requirements include being able to carry on a 5 min-

ute conversation with fluency in the language, translating a 2

minute speech or address, writing a letter or communicating in

that language and translating a 200 word or more from that

written word of the particular language. Brother Sever also

received a newly created Interpreter strip for proficiency in

Morse code, the first to be awarded in Lake District. Several

other of the scouts are currently working on these including

one in Sign Language for hearing impaired.

The boys are available to help with chores needing

done around your home to help them raise money for Summer

Camp in June (June 9-15), please contact the Brother Secretary,

Brother Sever or Brother Stearns if you might have some need

for some help around the home. Our WM:. Angelos recently

commissioned them for some gutter and yard cleaning in his

neighborhood.

The Troop meets every Monday in the Lodge dining

area at 7 pm and Brothers of the Lodge are always invited to

drop in. There are no meetings following a weekend camping

trip or on Mondays that are National Holidays. If you are

aware of any boys that might be interested in Boy Scouting age

11-18 bring them along. Boy Scouting is doing an excellent

job of training these good young men, making them better, and

therefore excellent potential candidates to receive the light of

Masonry when they reach 18.

The next Highway cleanup will be the last Saturday of

May, May 25th at 8 am. The Scout Troop as always will be

there. Needing as many Brothers as possible to help us with

this great Community exposure our Lodge gets as well as the

exercise and great eats provided by your Kitchen crew. For

those unable to pick up some litter, there is always a need for

drivers to take the picker uppers to the various locations and

giving them a ride back at the end. Also your WM:. and War-

dens can find a few jobs within the Lodge if you are unable to

get out as well as mentoring to the Boys as they assemble be-

fore and after pickup. The Youth are our future, they need

your encouragement, support and mentoring.

January 26, 2013 Installation of Officers

The new year has just started, but Mount Dora Rainbow

Assembly No. 79 has had a busy 2013. After travels within the

18th Masonic District for installations, we held our own Installa-

tion of Officers in January. Miss Janile Ramos was installed as

Worthy Advisor. Janile selected ‘The Sky is the Limit’ as her

theme for the term, based on the Disney movie ‘UP’ and has cho-

sen Camp Boggy Creek as her service project. We also served

the Lake County Shrine Dinner, where Janile presented the gavel

talk. In February, we held our yearly fund raiser, serving break-

fast and lunch at the Mount Dora Art Festival. Although it was-

n’t as busy as previous years the girls still had loads of fun flip-

ping pancakes and serving burgers & hotdogs. We also initiated

a new Rainbow Pledge and are very pleased to welcome Emily to

our group.

In March, we went to DeLeon Springs for some yummy

pancakes, canoeing, swimming, burgers and hotdogs. It was a

really nice day and we were pleased that Ocala Assembly was

able to join us. Our upcoming events include Obligatory Sunday

and bowling on April 7th, a yard sale at Mt Dora Lodge on April

13th from 8am – 2pm, proceeds to benefit our Grand Worthy Ad-

visors service project, the Rainbow Scholarship Fund, and we

will also be working the Shrine Circus on April 27 & 28 selling

novelties.

We are anxiously awaiting Grand Assembly in June,

celebrating the ‘Sweet Side of Rainbow’ and are the proud home

assembly of Grand Drill Leader, Miss Amber Sode and Grand

Representative to Virginia, Iowa and Minnesota, Miss Janile

Ramos. We always love visitors and welcome any Majority

Member, Mason, Eastern Star, Amaranth and non-affiliated

wives of Master Masons to our meetings, which are held on the

2nd and 4th Monday of each month.

“Any fact facing us is not as important as our attitude to-wards it, for that determines our success or failure. The way you think about a fact may defeat you before you

ever do anything about it. You are overcome by the fact because you think you are.”

- Norman Vincent Peale -

How is our attitude today? Have we let the facts of a matter slip away from us? Do we have all the facts? These are questions we should be asking ourselves each time we cast a vote or ballot in Lodge. Is it enough that we let the “orators” among us do our thinking and sway us by rhetoric? If it is a tough decision are we going to face it head on or let it slip by and maybe “someone else will handle it down the road”. Or worse, do nothing and continue the way “it always has been”. We as Masons are taught that we must think and act for our-selves. We can’t let a few nay sayers condemn us to doing the same old thing every time. If we let a “fact” grow into a huge problem with-out trying to overcome it then we will lose our way every time. If however, we face that fact and come to the realization that we are above it and can defeat it, then we will win in the end. Yes, there is a saying that the “facts speak for themselves” but I think that we as men and Ma-sons should also speak for ourselves and refute the facts sometimes. There is always another way of doing things, if we think about it hard enough. The Great Architect gave us a brain and the ability to reason, so why not use those abilities and figure out what needs to be done. This goes for our lives as well as in Lodge. Make the hard decisions and stand up for what is right. The “fact” that “it has always been done that way”, should not limit or sway us. We are better men and can be better Masons by doing the right thing every time. Don’t be overcome by the “facts”.

Leesburg History 1868-2013

Let’s go back to yesteryear. Let’s go back 100 years to

the first Communication in May of 1913 and what happened on

that day. The Worshipful Master was J. F. Stunkle who served

this Lodge as it’s Master 15 times! He also served as District

Deputy Grand Master in 1916.

The Lodge was opened on the evening of May 20th,1913 in the

Master Mason degree with 17 Brothers present. There were

two visiting Brothers, Bro. W.R. Shaw from Cadiz Lodge No.

121, Cadiz, KY and Bro. C.J. Johnson from Parrish Lodge No.

162, Parrish, FL. One of the communications read at this meet-

ing was an invitation from Bushnell Lodge 30, to attend the lay-

ing of the cornerstone for the new Court House. Also through

courtesy of Hillsborough Lodge No. 25, of Tampa, FL, Fellow

craft bro. J.S. McCawley was raised to the sublime degree of

Master mason.

There was one petition read, fee ($10) accepted and

referred to committee. They had one petition for affiliation by

demit, from Monroe Lodge 244, Monroe, NC .

The Lodge was stepped down to EA from Master Ma-

son and they had two EA Brothers return their proficiencies.

The Lodge was closed in the EA degree and a Lodge of Master

Masons opened. The Lodge balloted on accepting the Brothers

proficiency and allowing them to advance. They then stepped

back down to the FC degree and proceeded to pass the two

brothers to Fellow Craft. The Lodge received one Brother into

the Lodge to return his FC proficiency which he did satisfacto-

rily. The Lodge of FC was then closed and a Lodge of Master

Masons was opened. A ballot was spread on whether to accept

the proficiency of the FC Brother. It being clear he was elected

to be advanced to the Sublime degree of Master Mason.

The Treasurers report was given and there was $204.06 cash on hand. Rent from NYR Store Feb, Mar. Apr $60.00 MM degree from brother McCawley 10.00 Dues J.F, Stunkle 3.00 Dues J.S. McCawley 3.00 Application Fee 10.00 FC degree fee 5.00 $91.00 295.06 Bill for Commercial printing 1.25 Balance on hand 5/20/13 $293.81 There being no further business the Lodge was closed in due form

“Plastic Safety” In today’s society debit cards, bank cards and

credit cards are a way of life. We sometimes don't

think of how these convenient tools can put our lives

and identity in danger. Here are a few tips in hopes

of helping you becoming more secure with your

plastic finances.

Most people don't think of what the simple

act of signing the back of your plastic card can do.

Give the card number out only to those who actually

need to have it (not friends and family members).

You would not believe the family members, who we

thought of as trustworthy, only to find out they

bought a new T.V. or dress with your card. Check

your monthly statement(s) over with a fine tooth

comb. Call in any unknown purchases right away!

Don’t leave your card payments in your roadside

mailboxes. People will go through them. The best

place to drop off your mail payments is inside the

post office itself, not even the drop box outside is

safe (even there it can be a source for identity theft).

When using your card numbers on-line (or

the internet) it is a good habit to use only trusted

sites. Also look at the website URL (i.e.: http://

www.example.com/) and see if there is a little mas-

ter lock in the corner on either side of the URL. This

master lock should be in the locked position. This

means this site is a secure link and making purchases

should be safe. If the lock is un-locked then the link

is unsecure and should NOT be used to place your

order. Make sure to read the terms and conditions so

that added charges or added monthly charges are not

added to your order. After you order on the com-

puter it is a good idea to delete your computer cook-

ies and passwords. These can be copied by hackers

if you go into a wrong site or an infected site, you

may never know if the site is compromised.

We are told to sign the backs of our credit

and debit cards and instructed by cashiers. Did you

know that if your card is used or stolen without your

knowledge and the current user purchases items with

your copied signature (from the back of the card),

you could still be held liable and responsible for

those fraudulent purchases. Something to think

about... Instead write, "CHECK ID" on the back of

your cards. All cashiers are in fact supposed to check

your signature and ID before using your card for

purchases so don't get upset but be happy that they

are doing their job in stopping ID theft.

Most people don’t realize, but if you use

your debit card as a debit card and type in your Per-

sonal Identification Number (PIN) in some cases the

cashier can copy this and use it (PIN may show up

on their computer). Also when using your debit card

as debit your purchases are never insured by the

cards company or bank. Most banks will insure your

purchases if you use your debit card as a credit card.

The cashier can not copy this information unless

they use a carbon copy which in this day and age is

almost nonexistent. If they do use a carbon copy ask

for it and you shred it. That way it can not be copied.

Another good habit to get into is to make a

photo copy of your cards front and back and place

this information in a file cabinet or safe. I also do the

same with all my personal ID’s. This way you have

the card number and 1-800 numbers to call in case

your card(s) are lost or stolen. If your card(s) are

gone and you call for a replacement card(s) ask for a

different card number. Doing this helps in securing

your accounts. The number will be disabled once

you call in for a different numbered card but still ask

the question; will my old card(s) be disabled now?

Some cards (credit or debit) have an insurance to

cover the cost of lost and stolen cards if they have

activity on them. You should ask for this! Some

cards come with it but most don't! One more thing I

do is take one or two cards with me when I go out

and I leave the others behind in my safe that way if

my wallet is stolen I still have a source of finances

which can be used. If you carry everything and lose

it, then all of your finances are gone until your re-

placements come in which can be a few days to a

few weeks.

One can never be too safe but you have to be

or you could be taken advantage of. Again, if you

notice charges which you did not make, call your

card company or bank right away!

Marshal, Cy Stearns
