BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Joe Mor-ris said his 2013 Mayfield HighSchool football team wasn’t asflashyor fast asprevious champion-ship teams at the school.

Butthe Cardinalswere morethanimpressive enough Friday to cap-ture the program’s10th state title.

Mayfield scoredon its first threeoffensive plays, led 35-0 after thefirstquarterand went onto beat Wil-liamsburg 42-0 in the Class A cham-pionship game at Houchens Indus-tries/L.T. Smith Stadium.

An announced crowd of 3,151bravedrain andtemperatures in thelow 30s to witness Mayfield (14-1)overwhelm a Williamsburg teamthat was in its first state final.

“I’ve spentmy whole careercom-ing out hereto this gameand watch-ingthese first-yearteams doexactlywhat we did today,” said Williams-burg coach Jerry Herron, whoseteam finished 11-3. “You come out, yougetthe biglights, youhavea badquarter andyouget down 35points.”

Startingin histhirdstraightstatefinal, Mayfield senior quarterbackJakeGuhy completed14 of19 passesfor 213 yardsand threetouchdowns.Senior Deion Jackson hadsix catch-

es for 139 yards and two touch-downs, and freshman Trajon Brightcarried eighttimes for128yards anda score.

Mayfield won its second straightstate title and third in the past fouryears. Morris improved to 4-3 instate finals, matching his father,

Jack, with four state champion-ships.

“We had to overcome losing a lotlast year … but this team just keptfighting,” Joe Morris said. “We’renot real flashy or as fast as we’vebeen in the past, but we’re a solidteam everywhere and a team thatplays extremely hard.”

TheCardinals showedtheir dom-

inance early Friday.Williamsburg was forced to punton its first possession, and May-field’s Chase Sevic broke through toblock it. Dylan Reed recovered atthe 1-yard line, setting up StuartMills’ touchdown run on the Cardi-nals’ first play from scrimmage.

Guhy and Jackson hooked up onthefirst playsof Mayfield’s nexttwodrives, with Jackson getting behindthe Williamsburg secondary fortouchdown catches of 65 and 54yards. At the 8:18 mark of the firstquarter, Mayfield led 21-0.

“When we were watching film Isaw their (defensive backs) weren’tas quick as me,” Jackson said. “Iknew I could get past them easily.”

Bright’s 91-yard TD run made it28-0 with 3:34 left in the first quar-ter, and Mills’ 15-yard scoring runboosted Mayfield’s leadto 35-0at the2:02 mark.

Herron said Mayfield likely wasthe fastest team the Yellow Jacketsfaced this season.

“We wish we would have playedbetter,” he said. “We just can’t getthat first quarter back. It startedwith the blocked punt, and it wentdownhill from there.”

Guhy’s third touchdown pass, an11-yarderto MarshallBacon, madeit42-0 with 3:05 left in the third quar-ter and started the mercy-rule run-ning clock.

For Guhy and the rest of his fel-lowseniors, itwas a storybookfinishto a career that featured three state

titles in four years.“It’s been a great ride with theseguys,” he said. “It’s a great seniorclass and the best coaching staff inthe state.”
