Our students are prepared for the next step of development when they leave Jackson Academy--primed for the demands of college and practiced in a work ethic that will serve them well when they

enter the job market. I’m excited when I read stories of our alumni such as those in this issue of JAAM. It was not many years ago that I observed these outstanding individuals as they walked JA’s halls, exuberantly taking advantage of this school’s offerings in academics, arts, athletics, and other extracurricular activities. It does my heart good to see where they are now…starting their own businesses, using their expertise to promote health, managing the careers of artists and celebrities, and making their mark in government, real estate, publishing, design, and information technology. JA alumni are successful. They capitalize on the foundational knowledge gained at JA, use their initiative and passion to carve out careers that complement their God-given gifts, and make their workplaces and communities better by their presence. Stories of JA alumni rekindle fond memories. As I look back, I am pleased with the progression of Jackson Academy and the outcomes of our fine alumni. As I look forward, I am enthusiastic about our strategic direction. Our 21st Century Initiative, designed to position our school and our students for success in a highly technological and global world, will help the next generation of alumni continue our history of success.

As the first school in Mississippi to have an all-Macintosh computing environment, Jackson Academy has spent 2012-13 integrating computer technologies with day-to-day learning. Each student from K3 to 12th grade has utilized an Apple

device this academic year. The results of the Apple 1:1 Initiative have been exciting. Preparing students for adeptness in a technological world is one aspect of our strategic plan. Using the latest technology helps position students to excel with knowledge, skills, and expertise necessary for readiness in the 21st century. What does 21st century readiness mean? Readiness includes mastery of historically recognized core subjects infused with critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity skills. Interdisciplinary themes, such as global awareness as well as technology skills and life skills, are also blended into the curriculum. What does 21st century readiness preparation look like when using classroom technology? This year, third grade students researched biographies of living and historical individuals using iPads, then created costumes to depict the person. Classes displayed the costumes in a campus parade through preschool, elementary and administration. Preschool students used SMART Boards and iPod Touches to reinforce reading, handwriting, math, and other subject-area skills. In a high school physical science class, students designed and constructed compound machines and created a presentation that included a video of building their machine, photos of their progress, and math calculations of ideal mechanical advantage. Machines included go-carts, candy machines, catapults, cranes, a drawbridge, and an elevator, to name a few. Technology offers new ways to prepare JA students for the future. Our faculty and students have done an excellent job this year embracing the opportunities presented by the Apple 1:1 Initiative.

E very year at JA we attempt the impossible: to gather up the joy of life at JA and bring it to life in the JAAM pages. We know that there are collections of moments that bring the JA family

together. And there are traditional programs in place that we as parents and grandparents enjoy from year to year. The 50s play, the Mississippi play, Little House in the Big Woods, and Mrs. Revere’s programs are just a few of the memories. Many parents can still square dance from their third grade instructions from Sharon Clark.

Last year the JAAM featured plans for a 1:1 technology initiative for JA. JA partnered with Apple, Inc. to create a digital learning environment. Devices were issued to all students for the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year. Some of the transformations are in the Academic Updates. I think everyone has been astonished by the ease of this transition. This whole process was greatly facilitated with the hire of Charlie Patton, our tech center administrator. He previously worked for Apple, Inc. Other staff members invaluable to this transition were Eddie Wettach, Bobbie Downey, Matt Morgan, Steve McCartney, Sim Dulaney, and Shae Lowery.

I also find inspiration in our alumni. They always are eager to volunteer as participants in the Alumni Art Show, Alumni Council, Phone-a-thons, Career Day speakers, and in reunion leadership roles. You will see in the photos from the 10th and 20th reunions how much alumni enjoy coming back to JA. The class news section is always a popular part of JAAM because JA alumni are in a variety of professions and careers.

In closing, we know that 2013 will be a unique year of transition, collaboration, and growth, but one that shows great promise for our future. Let’s remember the “joy” of being a part of one of the finest independent schools in the Southeast.

Gratefully,

Writing and producing music in Nashville. Caring for children who need bone marrow transplants. Designing computer software that powers over 17 percent of the web. Jackson Academy alumni excel in virtually every industry. They depart JA well prepared to succeed at prestigious colleges and universities and advance into the world of work equipped to serve and lead. And whether publishing a cookbook with celebrity chefs or teaching fire rescue techniques, JA alumni craft careers that apply their unique gifts and reflect their values. Seventeen alumni share their stories, career advice and favorite JA memories for the Class of 2013.

Susannah Johnson Harris `00 Susannah works for St. Jude Medical, Inc. as a clinical specialist/registered nurse for the neuromodula-tion department, which assists with the placement and follow up of spinal cord stimulators (used for chronic pain).

Advice:“In college, go to class…grades do matter, but also have fun because you are about to have the time of your life and it won’t happen again.”

Memory:“My favorite memory is seeing my family and friends each day. The friends I made at JA are family. You realize how special that is once everyone is grown up and lives all over the country.”

Dave Whitley`06 Dave is a web designer for Automattic. Their flagship product is WordPress, blogging software that powers over 17 percent of the web.Automattic powers everyone from Martha Stewart and CNN, to Jackson’s very own Broadstreet and Jackson Academy.

Advice:“QWERTY is a terrible keyboard layout. Learn Dvorak instead.”

Memory:“Competing in Bands of America competitions with the JA Marching Band and trying my best not to miss deadlines in Mrs. Ingram’s art class are my favorite memories.”

Matt Hinkle ‘03 Matt is employed as a firefighter in Oxford. He is also employed by the Mississippi State Fire Academy as an adjunct instructor and teaches firefighters all across the state. Matt has received the Firefighter of the Year Award and the Medal of Valor.

Advice:“I seriously underestimated the value of networking and how directly it has helped me accomplish many goals. As a Fire and Rescue Instructor it is extremely important to establish contacts that are considered experts in their fields.

Memory:“I think one of the funniest memories I have was during my senior year. We decided to ride bikes to school. I rode a tandem bike with a friend, which proved to be fairly difficult navigating through campus.”

Abigail Sample Etling `02Abigail is a personal lifestyle manager. Abigail had to develop an eclectic skill set. She learned how to charter a private plane, plan an event for hundreds of people, and manage relationships, both professional and personal. She handles everything for Baron Davis, former point guard for the New York Knicks.

Advice:“As young people, we have a mental list of possible careers, and it can be hard to find the right fit. But, as an adult, many of the unusual are all incredibly fulfilling. I get to meet people from all walks of life and absorb their new and different perspectives.”

Memory:“My favorite JA memory was playing basketball with my best friends. Senior year was already great; winning the overall State Championship made it that much better. It was so rewarding to know that we had worked together for three years for that moment. I will always cherish my time at JA.” 7

Katie Calhoon `01Katie recently graduated from culinary school in New York City at the Natural Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts. She also completed an internship at Mas (farmhouse) in Manhattan and an apprenticeship at Blue Hill at Stone Barns with Chef Dan Barber. She is interested in farm-to-table cuisine, which focuses on delicious, health-supportive cuisine using ingredients that are local, organic, and sustainable.

Advice:“Learn to cook at home. Stay away from processed foods and eat more fruits and vegetables!”

Morgan Chaney ‘08 Morgan is the events coordinator for William Milligan Events, a corporate event planning and political fundraising firm in Washington, D.C. She planned and managed several events for the Republican National Convention and also assists in the design and creation of the firm’s newsletter.

Advice:“Don’t stress about going to college with a set major in mind. It will change many times before graduation. If you are like me, the profession you choose is totally different from your college degree.”

Memory:“My two favorite memories are dressing up on Friday for pep rallies and Coach Higgins’ seventh grade raft trips.”

Erskine Wells`99Erskine is vice president of government affairs for the BGR Group. After eight years working in the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, he left Capitol Hill and joined the BGR Group as a lobbyist. He works with colleagues to represent clients and advocates on their behalf before Congress and the administration.

Advice:“Jackson Academy is a terrific school, and I count myself lucky for having attended. Most importantly, JA taught me the basics of how to write effectively and coherently. I encourage future alumni to focus on this skill and develop it into a strength. It is applicable in any profession.”

Memory:“One of my favorite memories was winning the state championship in baseball my senior year with a group of guys I had played with since Little League.”

Joanna Baker Keith `02 Joanna is the owner and sole designer of Unink Design. Each piece is a custom design, from corporate logos to children’s birthday invitations to custom gift tags, many of which feature custom watercolor artwork that she has sketched and painted.

Advice:“Do what you love. When you do what you love it’s no longer just a job. You look forward to working each day, and I think it keeps you ambitious - you want to continue learning and always strive to be better.

Shannon York Blanks `01Shannon is the owner and designer of Patycake Kids, a children’s clothing line featuring hand-smocked clothing at affordable prices. She draws smocking plates, designs clothing patterns, and chooses thread and fabric for each garment. Patycake Kids clothes are sold at home clothing shows across the country as well as online at www.patycakekids.com.

Advice:“There are lots of great opportunities in life, but the best ones come from what you love to do and want to do. JA gave me the opportunity to find my creative side, coupled with business skills and abilities. I never thought my AP art lessons, or my senior accounting work, would be skills I use on a daily basis.”

Memory:“I loved using my creative side to come up with great costumes and outfits for Friday pep rallies.”

Advice:“We all have to work…it’s part of life. But if you love what you do for a living then most days it doesn’t feel like work. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and pursue your passions. The fear of the unknown can be the gas or the brakes…make it your fuel to finding out who you really are.”

Ashley Phillip ‘02Ashley is an associate editor at Clarkson Potter, a division of Random House. While Ashley has worked on all sides of the business, she has been able to focus primarily on cookbooks. She works with celebrity chefs, such as Ina Garten, Giada De Laurentiis, and Bobby Flay.

Advice:“Work really hard. And make lots of friends along the way. Work ethic speaks volumes without a word coming out of your mouth.Don’t be afraid to take a risk. I left a job in magazines before I had another one because I knew it wasn’t the field for me. Thankfully, the job at Potter came quickly.”

Memory: “What stands out to me more than specific events is the people…Coach Higgins, Mrs. Downey, Mrs. Neely, Mrs. McKeigney, and Mr. Carter, to name a few. These teachers pushed and encouraged me. Mrs. Downey told me that I could sparkle if I wanted to, if I worked for it. I could choose to write decently well, or I could choose to sparkle. Her words have stuck with me. When I find myself faltering I think, now wait, I can do that or I can sparkle. What’s it going to be?”

Cameron Vaughan Pumphrey `02 Cameron is a public relations coordinator and merchandise manager for Tenth Avenue North, a Christian group. She coordinates all of their VIP ticketing and set-ups, along with handling all of their merchandise.

Advice:“My parents always taught me never to settle, in any aspect of my life. Pursue your dreams, carry the Lord with you and the amazing morals and values you were taught at JA, and trust in His guidance and direction.”

Memory:”One of my favorite memories was a painful one. I skidded into the wall at basketball practice and had to get stitches and wear a bandage above my eye. I was eM.B.A.rrassed to show up the next day, but when I did all my friends, some teachers, and seniors were all wearing Band-Aids on their faces.”

Kirk Sims `02Kirk is the chief of staff for the Office of Governor Phil Bryant. Kirk oversees the day-to-day operations of all aspects of the governor’s work. His work includes scheduling the governor’s time, developing policy initiatives, spearheading important industry summits, and also managing any unforeseen issues that arise each day.

Advice:“My advice is to not be afraid to take a risk for something you believe in.”

Memory: “My favorite story from my years at JA is sitting in the locker room at Starkville Academy preparing to play in the 2001 northern district football playoff game. We had a lot of downtime before warm ups started, and the senior guys sat around and reminisced about our football experiences through the years. We laughed hard, and smiled a lot, and when we took the field that night, we were all very relaxed and played a great game. We went on the next week to beat Prep in the State Championship.”

Dr. Jennifer Winstead `92Jennifer is a higher educational consultant for the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in South Africa. This project aims to help the university students utilize co-curricular activities as a way to learn the soft skills (communication, leadership, professionalism, etc.) needed for success in school, work and in life.

Advice:“Many experts describe your generation as self-centered, entitled and irresponsible. Live a life that proves them wrong.”

Memory:“I had the opportunity to travel to France and Switzerland one spring break with Miss Alice Powers as part of French class. Who knew a simple school trip would lead to a lifetime of study travel that eventually gave me the confidence to actually move abroad to work on such an important issue, education.

Jamie Chustz `92 Jamie serves as the chief operating officer for the Mattiace Company. He works in a number of areas including real estate development, operations and management, and leasing and consulting for office and retail properties.

Advice:“ You will often hear people tell you what a special time of your life the high school and college years are, and I would add do not take that for granted. Enjoy this phase along with the many valuable friendships and relationships that you will enjoy throughout your life.”

Memory:“My favorite memory would be playing basketball with many wonderful teammates as we enjoyed several successful seasons with our outstanding coach, Stan Jones.”

Austin Summerford ‘92Austin is the executive director for Infrastructure Program Management with AT&T. He has been working for AT&T for over 10 years. Some of the larger transactions he worked on included the proposed acquisition of T-Mobile in 2011 and AT&T’s acquisi-tion of BellSouth/Cingular in 2006. Currently, he is running an organization responsible for deploying new technologies into AT&T’s network.

Advice:“As you start to make some big life choices such as, ‘where will I go to school?’ or ‘what will I do after school?’ be willing to step out of your comfort zone. If you’re like me, taking a step like that can be intimidating, but it can also be very rewarding. I’m a big believer that we grow and learn the most when we challenge ourselves, and stepping out of your comfort zone is a great way to do that.”

Memory:“Really my entire senior year…the football games, senior parties, crawfish boils at baseball games, prom, the night we won the AAA basketball championship and all the other good times with friends are my favorite memories.”

Meg Goodwin ‘02Meg works at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore as a registered nurse in the inpatient pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant area. She provides inpatient hospital care to children of all ages who are being treated for cancer and blood disorders or receiving bone marrow transplants.

Advice:“Not everyone’s path through life is straight and narrow. In fact, life is a series of adventures and mishaps that eventually lead you to exactly where you need to be.”

Memory:“As silly as is sounds, my favorite JA memory is my entire senior year. My whole class really came together, making for some unforgettable moments. And let’s not forget those elf auctions!”

The technology boom has produced a generation of computer-literate preschoolers. Young children navigate touch-screen cell phones, tablets and use laptops with ease--all before they enter preschool. Now, that technology has found its way to the classroom. SMART Boards, computers, and iPod Touches are now staples to our

curriculum, and students are highly motivated to explore all they have to offer. With supervision and in moderation, technology has many positive and beneficial advantages to reinforcing reading, math, and handwriting skills for preschool children. Children are able to physically interact with their learning environment, and teachers are able to instantly evaluate and measure a student’s progress.

it is truly hard to believe that Jackson Academy is still in the infancy stages of our 1:1 technology initiative. Our elementary teachers and students have enthusiastically embraced the Apple devices and have worked extremely hard to integrate the new technology into the daily teaching and learning process. Technology in the elementary provides

teachers with a tool that blends the best of the past with the excitement and innovation of the future. in some instances, the technology has improved and enhanced traditional lessons and methods that are time tested and are proven to be successful. other times, technology has provided the platform for teachers to challenge students to create, collaborate, communicate, and problem solve in ways that were impossible before the initiative. it is hard to predict what teaching and learning will look like at JA as the technology initiative matures, but if the first academic year is any indication, exciting times are in store.

laptops are making internet research so much more accessible for secondary students. the dictionary feature is an easy way for students to look up unfamiliar words. Students are researching information to create their own documents and presentations. These may be done in

haiku or in google Drive. students work together simultaneously to create documents and presentations, which often include graphic, video, and audio enhancements, as well as external links. Another way for students to create and present information is with computer-created posters and brochures. Annotation tools allow students to make notes and comments on teacher-created documents and presentations. instead of copying from the board or printing out lessons, students can annotate documents and save annotations directly to their computer. the table feature in pages facilitates note-taking by making the process more convenient and concise. Two student groups are creating newscasts of school events and personalities. These students are learning interviewing and production skills in addition to gathering and presenting information. seventh-grade students are taking a rotation class in digital literacy, where they learn about digital responsibility and safety. new desks accommodate both the laptop and a textbook or notebook. the desks are easily movable into different configurations for different classroom activities. Teachers direct students to many educational websites for various subjects and activities. Most english teachers use turnitin.com to teach students how to avoid plagiarism and to grade written work online. haiku, our learning Management System (lMS), facilitates communication between teachers and students. Teachers post assignments, documents, and presentations as well as links to various websites, which students can access at any time. turning in homework assignments via the dropbox feature is easy for both students and teachers. teachers also create assignments that let students participate in discussions and create wikis (websites often created collaboratively) and blogs.

does the thought of choosing a college major send you into a panic? When this question is asked of teenagers, the overwhelming response is “yes!” choosing a major in college is an important decision and not one to take lightly. the choices high school students make now can affect the career choice they will have after graduation.

The job hunt may seem far away for our eleventh and twelfth grade students. however, it is a concern the majority of our students think about at least once a week. they not only have to wrestle with the decision of selecting a major to land a promising job after college graduation, but also whether it will help them enter a field that is growing. With the unemployment rate near a 26-year high and once-steady industry in flux, the conventional wisdom that it doesn’t matter what you studied as an undergraduate might seem a little less wise. in the counseling office, we have started helping our students explore majors and learn more about which careers would be a good fit based off of their personality, interest, work values, and aptitudes. the students can take this career assessment to identify which cluster of careers matches their personality and aptitudes. Research shows that if you know what your strengths are, you can find advantageous ways to use them; when you understand your weaknesses, you can avoid being trapped by them. The students enjoy learning about their personality, but most importantly, they learn about careers and majors that are closely tied to growing industries. the top five demanding majors for the future include engineering, life sciences, statistics, environmental studies, and finance. Our goal is to help these students find the right career that will enhance their life, rather than settling for a career.

in early november, the Jackson Academy performing Arts department presented Bye Bye Birdie in the school’s 800-seat performance hall. This was the second collaboration

for the directing team of Stacey overstreet and katie Shores. it included a cast of approximately 40 ninth through twelfth graders, as well as a 15-piece orchestra and crew of 10. Audience members enjoyed a re-creation of the King of Rock and Roll era, complete with clever humor and catchy music. This perfectly cast production was a delight for all ages. in April, theatre-goers were treated to the performance of The Last Night of Ballyhoo in the flex theatre. this play was a dramatic change from the light-hearted feel of Bye Bye Birdie, but still had plenty of laughs. in January, the Jackson Academy mock trial team participated in the Young lawyers’ Association competition at Mississippi College. Jackson Academy’s choral program had a fantastic year. finale, JA’s sixth grade ensemble, presented the Christmas musical Dude, You Hear What I Hear? in the performance hall. Showtime and encore, JA’s junior high and senior high showchoirs, began their season with a classical Christmas concert at fondren Presbyterian Church followed by

The season culminated with the Spring Spectacular in April and a trip for encore to Branson, Missouri, to compete in fAMe events’ nationally recognized showchoir competition. A new addition to the performing arts schedule is the musical production Schoolhouse Rock, LIVE! Jr. it is the first musical specifically involving fifth through eighth grade students. it took place in the performance hall in April. the Jackson Academy performing Arts Department is a great place for students to join in, find their niche, and call home.

poise through performance, improve leadership skills, and gain confidence in their own capabilities. Over the past two decades, the JA Band program has earned a national reputation for excellence and innovation. starting in 1990, the JA marching band has been named bands of America (bOA) Regional class champions 14 times, in St. louis, Atlanta, San Antonio, and indianapolis. At the BoA grand National Championships, held each year in indianapolis, the JA Band has earned three second place National Class A titles and two BoA grand National Class A championships, in 1993 and 2004. the JA band remains one of only two Class A bands to be named a grand National finalist (one of the top 12 bands regardless of class). During the 2013 marching season, in addition to contributing to the JA spirit at pep rallies and football games, the marching band competed at the Clinton Arrow invitational and the Pearl invitational Marching Championship, competing against much larger bands from public and independent schools around the region. They garnered numerous

band

accolades, including all Superior ratings for Band, guard, and percussion; best in class at both events; and numerous caption awards. At the BoA San Antonio Super Regional Championship, where they were again the smallest group, they earned best visual and best music awards in their class, and second place in Class A. in addition to Marching Band, students also participate in Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Winter guard. The Winter guard competed in the Mississippi indoor Association circuit, where they earned either first or second place in their class at every event. The guard also traveled to Pensacola, fla., to compete at the Wgi Regional Championship. JA students Annie Campbell, Samantha hill, and Caroline Burford auditioned for and earned spots on the 2013 mississippi All-state lions band, which will travel to hamburg, germany in July. Through a nurturing environment where each student is encouraged to reach his or her highest potential, the Jackson Academy Band program will continue to succeed in its goal of music education and life skills development.

Aacademy. With the majority of the total dollars raised going toward the school’s operating budget, the Annual Fund is vital to providing the best educational experience for our students. We are grateful for the opportunity to thank our generous Jackson Academy families and friends for making a great JA education even better. The donors listed showed their commitment to the school through gifts totaling more than $340,000 to the JA Annual Fund. Through their financial support, they have made an

incredible difference for students and faculty today and in the future. We are deeply appreciative of their contributions. The JA Annual Fund continues to provide the many extras for students and faculty above what tuition dollars can provide. At any given moment across the JA campus students are utilizing equipment and programs purchased through annual giving. Throughout the school year the families and friends of Jackson Academy are extremely generous to so many areas of the school. Their support of JA is exhibited in both volunteerism and financial donations. Gifts listed were received between June 1, 2011, and May 31, 2012.

So many Jackson Academy alumni have faithfully shown a deep commitment and affection for their school. in giving of their time and talents through volunteering across campus, our alumni share a great history of giving back. this same commitment is also showing in their financial support. We are indeed grateful for all our alumni who want to

help ensure today’s students have the same great JA experience. for the second year, JA alumni class representatives have joined together each fall in the gallery of the Performing Arts Center for two nights of phonathons. They enjoy reconnecting with friends and encourage their classmates to participate with a gift to the JA Annual fund. We are so appreciative of the positive response from our alumni in giving back to their school. The alumni listed made a gift to the JA Annual Fund between June 1, 2011, and May 31, 2012.

JA junior Alison turbeville has been selected as the first recipient of the scott branning scholarship. the scholarship was established in coach branning’s memory by his friends, the branning family, and Jackson Academy. love for JA, personal integrity, respect for and sensitivity to others, and tenacity in dealing with the circumstances of life–all qualities that coach branning exemplified in his daily life through his walk with christ–are the criteria for this truly special scholarship.

A 1994 graduate of JA, coach branning returned and worked in several capacities including as teacher and coach until January of 2012. his concern for the value of an individual to be challenged and encouraged was a hallmark.

this scholarship seeks to honor a rising sophomore, junior, or senior and will be in the form of JA tuition credit. this scholarship will be awarded each spring at Senior high Award’s day. Shown with Alison (center) are Carol and keith Branning.
