Every great achievement starts with a dream. We know because we see dreams made real every single day. Whatever your interests, whatever your goals, you’ll be given every opportunity to pursue them, with success, at Holy Family University.

Founded in 1954 by the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, Holy Family University is a comprehensive four-year university based in Philadelphia. About half of the University’s 3,500 students are enrolled on a full- or part-time basis in the traditional undergraduate program. The remaining students are adults enrolled in graduate programs or accelerated degree programs designed for working adults.

More than 45 degree programs are avail-able from four schools: Arts & Sciences, Business Administration, Education, and Nursing & Allied Health Professions. Con-tinuing education and accelerated degree programs are offered by the Division of Extended Learning.

The University is based at the Northeast Philadelphia Campus, which serves as home of the traditional undergraduate program and offers courses in the gradu-ate program. The Northeast Philadelphia Campus also offers student housing for full-time undergraduates.

Respect for the individual, the dignity of the human person. Inspired by the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth who founded the University, these values are at the very core of our institution. They are values that are taught here, but even more, they are values that are lived here. Our concern for moral values and social justice guides our programs and enriches everything that we do.

The Central Atlantic Collegiate Confer-ence is an NCAA Division II Conference composed of 14 institutions in Connecti-cut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. The member institutions are Bloomfield College, Caldwell College, Chestnut Hill College, Concordia (NY) College, Dominican (N.Y.) College, Feli-cian College, Georgian Court University, Goldey-Beacom College, Holy Family University, Nyack College, Philadelphia University, Post University, University of the Sciences and Wilmington University.

The CACC was founded in 1961. A meet-ing of eight schools was arranged and host-ed by Norm Wilhelmi, Athletic Director at The King's (NY) College. The meeting resulted in the forming a new conference, the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. The conference included eight original members in the fall of 1961. They were Bloomfield College, Dowling College, The King's College, Marist College, Monmouth College, Nyack College, C.W. Post College and Southampton College.

After years of transition and member-ship changes, NAIA members Bloomfield College, Caldwell College, Dominican College, Georgian Court College, Nyack College, Teikyo- Post University and St. Thomas Aquinas College made applica-tion to the NCAA Division II. The seven schools applied for membership in the fall of 1998. In 2002 the CACC qualified for NCAA Division II Provisional Conference Status and it achieved Active Status in July of 2004. Six schools: Bloomfield College, Caldwell College, Dominican College, Feli-cian College, Georgian Court College and Post University, became full Division II members in 2002-03. Holy Family College, Goldey-Beacom College, Nyack College and University of the Sciences in Phila-delphia became active DII members in 2003-04, followed by Wilmington College in 2004-05.

During the span from 1999-2009, the conference underwent numerous changes in addition to upgrading to Division II. In 1999, St. Thomas Aquinas left the conference and five new members joined. Felician College, Goldey-Beacom College, Holy Family College, University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and Wilmington College, all NAIA schools, immediately ap-

plied for Division II status upon becoming members. In 2000, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) boosted the member-ship to 12 schools and that number grew to 13 in 2005 as Philadelphia University started active membership. NJIT moved on to Division I status after the 2005-06 season. The addition of Chestnut Hill College in 2007 and Concordia College in 2009 brought the CACC to 14 members. Only four conferences in Division II have more members.

The CACC currently offers 13 champion-ship sports, including men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball, men's and women's cross country, men's and wom-en's tennis, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's golf and women's lacrosse. Currently, nine of the CACC's season-ending tournaments lead to automatic NCAA qualifications, includ-ing women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's bas-ketball, softball, baseball and men's golf.

With its ascent to active Division II status, the Conference made major improvements by introducing a new website and logo. Both were unveiled in July of 2004. The website, www.caccathletics.org, contains updated stats, schedules, results, photos and news about all 14 member schools. The site underwent a complete redesign in the summer of 2009 and is scheduled for another in 2012.

The CACC adopted its current logo from a design submitted by Royal Rooster Design of Iowa. In 2009, the CACC commissioned seperate logos for each conference sport and in 2010 added championship tourna-ment logos for all sports. A 50th Anniver-sary Logo was created for the 2011-2012 academic year. The logos are trademarked through an agreement with Strategic Marketing Alliance (SMA) to protect and market the CACC marks.

Off the court and field, the CACC and its student-athletes take pride in the balance between academics and athletics. The CACC finished third nationally among Division II Conferences for the gradua-tion rate of its student-athletes, according to the latest NCAA report. Furthermore, the conference established its inaugural All-Academic team in the fall of 2004 and

the number of names on the list continues to grow each year. The CACC honored 285 scholar-athletes in 2010-2011.

The CACC has also become one of the national leaders in the annual Division II Make-A-Wish Foundation fundraiser. The 13 CACC schools raised $12,218 in 2008-09, the eighth-highest total in Division II.

Division II is composed of 23 confer-ences and seven independent institutions ranging from coast-to-coast-and beyond. Division II is the only NCAA member-ship division with programs in Alaska and Puerto Rico. Furthermore, four of the five colleges on Hawaii are members of Divi-sion II.

2013 Season Outlook

The New Era of Holy Family Softball Set to Begin

It will be a new era of Holy Family University softball in 2013. Holy Family will look to return to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Confer-ence (CACC) Tournament again this season after earning the eighth seed last season. The Tigers finished 21-26 overall and 13-13 in the CACC last year to ad-vance to the postseason for the first time under third year head coach Davon Ortega. Holy Family returns 13 players from a year ago, including seven starters. The team will also welcome four newcomers to the mix. According to Ortega, the team is ready for what she predicts to be one of the most exciting seasons for the program. “The 2013 season should prove to be one of the most exciting seasons for Holy Family softball,” said Ortega. “The team has a new mentality and new leadership and after getting a taste of winning in last year’s CACC Championships and the addition of a strong freshman class, the expectations are much higher. The 2013 team is much stronger and more mentally focused.” Holy Family went 1-2 in last year’s CACC Tournament, including a 5-4 loss to top-seeded Dominican College in the opening game that went eight innings. The Tigers defeated No. 4 Wilmington, 8-5, before being eliminated by No. 7 Felician College, 10-2.

PITCHING/CATCHING

Holy Family will feature an experienced pitching staff this season, including three juniors and a sophomore. Junior Victoria Reuscher (Cheltenham, Pa./Little Flower HS for Girls) is coming off a career year that saw her log 167 innings and career-highs in strikeouts (35), wins (11), earned run average (1.93) and complete game (20). Reuscher finished last season with the third lowest ERA in the CACC. The Tigers will also welcome back junior Rachael Alligood (Levittown, Pa./Harry

S. Truman) who earned All-CACC honors for the first time in her career after being named Honorable Mention. In 21 games, Alligood recorded a career-low 3.62 era and finished the season 5-4 to improve to 13-13 in her career. “Our first key to success this season begins in the pitching circle,” said Ortega. “Over the last two seasons our pitching has been inconsistent and we have primarily relied on one pitcher to get us through the season. Our goal on the mound this season is to have a highly effec-tive pitching “staff” and not rely on the arm of just one of our pitchers. Our staff is more experienced and all have seen what it takes to pitch successfully at this level and in our conference. All four pitchers added some velocity in the off-season and their experience will stabilize their mental toughness to put us in a good position to win games.” Holy Family will also feature junior Samantha Borrelli (West Berlin, N.J./Overbrook) and sophomore Sarah Chilutti (Philadelphia, Pa./Arch-bishop Ryan) in the Tigers’ rotation. Behind the plate managing the pitching staff will be senior Deanna Myers (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) who returns for her fourth season. Myers batted a career-high .259 after collecting 29 hits, five doubles and five home runs last season. She enters this season ranked second all-time in program history with 19 career home runs. Myers will get some help this year and share the catching duties with junior Hayley Brennan (Frankford, Del./Indian River), sophomore Kristy Tomlinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Towne Charter) and freshman Claudia Boggi (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan). “All four catchers have been working with the pitchers every step of the way through the off-season and preseason,” said Ortega. “The catchers have also established themselves as a staff that has not only challenged but kept the pitching staff inline with their goals. The preseason has

2013 Season Outlook

seen the catching staff increasing their quickness and overall strength. The success for our staff will come from them continuing to learn to be more commanding of not only their pitching staff but of the entire infield.”

INFIELD Just like last season the entire starting infield returns for the Tigers, which should give the team stability and experience all the way around. At third base the Tigers will return senior Lindsey Iden (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock North) to man the hot corner as well as freshman Kristine Casey (Newark, Del./Caravel) who will vie for playing time. “Lindsey Iden is expected to continue to provide us with stability at the hot corner,” said Ortega. “Kristine Casey will provide tons of competi-tion and will be on Lindsey’s heels throughout the season, vying for time. A third baseman by trade, Kristine has the versatility and know-how to play anywhere she is needed so if both are consistent offen-sively, Kristine could easily play anywhere else on the infield, allowing us to have them both in the lineup.” The middle infield will also have some competition both at shortstop and second base. Borrelli, who will also see time pitching, will be at shortstop and will be sharing the duties with freshman Alexis Daubert (Stratford, N.J./Sterling). “Sammi stepped up at shortstop last season and her incredible arm strength has helped her to make some outstanding plays,” said Ortega. “Alexis adds a ton of depth and she will be competing for innings at shortstop and will be key at that position when Sammi is on the mound.” At second base, Holy Family has a potential of four players filling the position, including senior Danielle McDevitt (Williamstown, N.J./Wil-liamstown) who returns after leading the team in hitting with a .377 average. The Tigers also have the options of Casey, Daubert and Tomlin-son to play second base. “At second base, we have four players that will all be competing for in-nings,” said Ortega. “All of our middle infielders work and communicate well with each other so ultimately, innings will be decided based on hitting.” Shifting to the right, the Tigers return junior Erin Corrado (Fair Hill, Md./St. Mark’s (Del.)) to take on the first base duties. Holy Family will also have the flexibility to fill in innings with the addition of its other catchers. Myers will look to get a few innings at first as well as junior Hayley Brennan. “Erin will continue to be our anchor at first base,” said Ortega. “She has been such a tremendous presence in the infield and she just continues to make incredible plays at first.”

OUTFIELD The outfield will be young for the Tigers this season, but will feature three strong defensive players. Freshman Alicia Alvarado (Palmdale, Calif./Paraclete) will be featured in left field, which will allow sopho-more Kelsi Bunda (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) to take over the duties in center field. Junior AnnMarie Dalton (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) will once again hold down right field. “Our outfield is a combination of the hardest workers on our roster and by far, our strongest defensive asset,” said Ortega. “The job our out-fielders do and did last season to keep us in games is underrated.” Ortega continues, “Alicia will see the most innings in leftfield this sea-son. She adds more speed to the outfield, which will allow us to cover more ground and track down more balls in the outfield as a whole. Kelsi

will move from left field to anchor the outfield in centerfield and has already done a great job of establishing herself as a leader and keeping the outfield on their toes. AnnMarie will once again hold down the right field position. The position is difficult and Am has done a great job of learning how to read the ball off of the bat and to get herself into posi-tion to make some great catches and plays.” Junior Valerie Miller (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) will be compet-ing for innings in right field as well adding depth for the Tigers in the outfield. “Valerie has been working hard on being a left and right-handed threat offensively and she will be competing for innings in right field where we can leverage her speed and athleticism to get to more balls.”

DESIGNATED PLAYER The designated player spot in the lineup can be filled by any one of the players on this year’s roster according to Ortega. She does see Brennan having the upper hand as she continues to work her way back onto the field. “Any one of our players could see themselves put into the designated player position,” said Ortega. We have a lot of solid bats and in order for us to maximize our output, we may have to move players into the designate player position. Ortega continues about Brennan, “Hayley is an outstanding line drive, up-the-middle hitter and is great in clutch and pressure situations so we plan to leverage her talents however we can.”

SCHEDULE Holy Family will begin its season with its annual Florida trip in which the Tigers will face ten non-conference opponents during the six-day stretch beginning March 3 and concluding on March 8. The Tigers will be com-peting in the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee. “Our schedule is more competitive this season,” said Ortega. “We have added some new teams to the schedule and we have also requested to play stronger programs, primarily in Florida. Several teams on our schedule started the season ranked nationally (Kutztown, Indianapolis), while several others earned national votes or regional rankings. This will give us the opportunity to see where we stack up against some of the best teams. If we want to be the best, we have to play the best.” When the team returns north, the Tigers will face Bloomsburg Universi-ty in the home opener on Tuesday, March 12. The Tigers will host their home games at Helen Randle Park in Newtown. The first CACC match up of the season is slated for four days after the home opener as the Tigers host Nyack College on Saturday, March 16. Holy Family will face seven non-conference opponents during the course of the year, including three at home and four on the road. On top of the non-conference schedule, the Tigers will also face 13 confer-ence opponents. Holy Family will be tested this season, both in conference and out of conference. However, if the Tigers stay focused and consistent they will find themselves back in the CACC Tournament come May. Holy Family was recently selected to finish eighth in the conference according to the annual CACC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. “To be successful and get ourselves back to the CACC Tournament this season, we need to continue to focus on our process and playing our game consistently,” said Ortega. “We need to be in attack mode and play aggressive every single game. The key to getting back to the post-season is to mentally stay strong throughout the entire season and find consistency as a team.”

Deanna is pure strength and power as a player, however, her extra hard work in the offseason is what has helped her to raise the level of her defensive game. In the fall we asked Deanna to become a more commanding presence on the field and to take charge, which she has done a great job at. As in the past, she will be key for us to preventing runners from taking extra bases. Offensively, we are looking to Deanna to have her best season and to go out with a bang. I’m excited to be around to see her leave her mark in the HFU Softball history books.

Over the last year, Danielle’s love and respect for the game and her mental toughness have matured immensely. This maturation has helped her bounce back from knee surgery and to get back onto the field and into game-ready shape for the start of the season. There is no doubt that Danielle will leave Holy Family as one of the best players to ever wear a Ti-ger uniform. She’s already accomplished so much in her three years here but we will still look to her to continue to push the reaches of her game. I have a feeling that she’s on the verge of having the best season of her career in 2013.

I love watching athletes compete during their senior season because they play uninhibited and fearless and Lindsey has definitely embraced this attitude. Since day one of the fall, Lindsey has been “all or nothing” every time she steps onto the field to play or practice. An already strong and instinctual player, Lindsey has become a consistent mainstay both at the hot corner and at the plate. Her ability to drive the ball to all fields consistently will allow her to drive in more runs for us this season. I expect Lindsey to have the best season of her career in 2013 as she helps her senior class to be one of the best in the history of HFU Softball.

In her first two seasons, Rachael just scratched the surface of her abilities as a pitcher. A true workhorse, Rachael has matured and grown as a person, player, and teammate this offseason and she has finally been showing us what she is truly capable of. We will look to her to maintain accuracy and consistency on the mound and if she can do that, I think she can be one of the best pitchers in our conference. Rachael has also been focusing on getting her offensive game on track and has been doing a great job of driving the ball and putting it in play, which is going to leverage our already strong lineup.

Am came into this year with a clearer head and was ready to return to the aggressive, fearless mental state she presented during her freshman campaign. Am has done a great job of solidifying herself as one of the hardest workers on our roster and this has made her a smart and outstanding baserunner and a better outfielder. Her sound fundamentals and her hard work in the offseason have made her one of the most consis-tent bunters and contact hitters in the lineup, which will put us in a good position to score more runs this season.

Hayley has continued working hard on making her comeback in our lineup this season. We will be looking to Hayley to step into and embrace the role of the designated player this year. Her ability to drive the ball up-the-middle and to the right side will be called upon a lot in pressure and clutch situations. Hayley is another player who has the ability to play multiple positions well and as she works her way back onto the field, she could fill in at first, third, and catcher. Hayley is a spark and a leader on the field and that leadership will be called upon to help carry us through this season.

BORRELLI Career Highs - Batting

Sammi is such an enjoyable player to watch. She has a fire about the way she plays the game and she is capable of play-ing well anywhere we need her. We expect Sammi to elevate her game yet another level this season and to be the most consistent RBI hitter in our lineup. She has incredible power and an uncanny ability to drive the ball to the outfield gaps and come up clutch when we need her. This season we will look for Sammi to also be one of our pitchers on our staff as she has great movement and speed on her pitches that will help us balance out our pitching. If Sammi can stay consistent offensively, I think she will have her best season yet.

Valerie really is the glue that binds this team. She has been such a positive influence on all of her teammates and her constant hustle on the field has seen her improve her overall game. Val has great hand-eye coordination, which allows her to put the ball in play consistently from the left and right side of the plate. Her increased speed will be key on the bases and in the outfield. Val has been taking feedback well and working hard on the little things in the offseason and I can’t wait to see how it translates on the field.

Tori has really stepped up her game this year and is setting the bar high for the Holy Family pitching staff. Her focus on her breaking pitches and hitting her spots consistently are going to be key for our staff’s success throughout the season. Her hard work offensively will help us as we can work her bat into the lineup more this season as well. With a much different outlook and a more refined mental game, I cannot wait to see what Tori does on the mound this year.

CORRADO Career Highs - Batting

Erin is one of the best fielding first baseman’s I’ve ever seen. Game-after-game, she never ceases to amaze with the way she digs balls, stretches, and makes difficult plays look routine. Erin has such a tremendous grasp on the ins and outs of the game and that has given her an incredible ability to lead her teammates on the field. Offensively, Erin was on a hot streak the second half of last season – this season we will look to her to be consistent throughout the entire season as she is one of a few power hitters we have in our lineup who will be relied upon to drive in our runs. If Erin can stay positive and out of her head, I think the CACC will finally get a glimpse of her true talents and abilities this season.

With a year of experience under her belt and a new mental approach, I expect Sarah to come out strong this season. Alicia is one of the most focused athletes I’ve ever met. She works hard every single day and there is not a second that she’s not hustling. A true triple threat at the who can hit from both sides of the plate, Alicia is going to enhance our offense overall. She worked hard in the off-season to improve her strength and speed and I believe that’s going to make her an incredible threat on the basepaths and in the outfield. Alicia brings a new mentality to HFU Softball and is already setting a standard of excellence and leadership. I am excited to see Alicia’s success at the college level.

Kristine truly possesses all of the intangibles that we look for in our program. All of her hard work in the offseason has raised her confidence as a player and it has translated very well on the field. Kristine is so fundamentally sound defensively and her uber game smarts make her extremely versatile. She has worked hard in the offseason to improve her bat speed and it has paid off as she is consistently driving the ball. If Kristine continues to perform the way she has been, she has the potential to be an immediate impact player during her freshman season.

#14Prior to wearing a Holy Family uniform, Claudia possessed tremendous catching fundamentals. In her short few months here, she has become more than just a fundamentally sound catcher – she has increased her overall strength, and in turn her arm strength and she has learned to command the field from behind the plate. Claudia has been a sponge, taking all the feedback she’s received from the coaching staff and making it work for her game, especially offensively, which has seen her becoming one of our most consistent hitters in the pre-season. We will look to leverage Claudia’s previously under-utilized offensive power in key situations as she gains experience at the college level this year.

Alexis is one of the most naturally talented players I’ve seen. She is a slick-fielding infielder who is quick and extremely instinctual on defense. She has the ability to not only make the routine plays consistently, but she can make outstanding plays deep in the hole to her left and right.
