The Star-Spangled Banner

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,

O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there

Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

About Our Speaker

Oakcrest School is pleased to announce this year’s Commencement speaker, Professor Susan Hanssen, Class of 1992. Susan E. Hanssen is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Dallas where she teaches American and Western civilization as part of the liberal arts core curriculum. After graduating from Oakcrest in 1992, Dr. Hanssen earned her B.A. from Boston University and her Ph.D. from Rice University.

Dr. Hanssen has published on the development of the idea of “the English-speaking peoples” during the two World Wars, including “G. K. Chesterton and British national identity in World War I,” in The Human Tradition in Modern Britain, and “Dumb Ox at the Crossroads of English Catholicism: G. K. Chesterton, Newman, and Pascendi,” in the Renaissance Quarterly.

Dr. Hanssen was the 2010-11 Garwood Visiting Fellow for the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University. The program is an initiative of Robert George, professor of jurisprudence, through the politics department of Princeton University. She is currently working on a book on The Education of Henry Adams and the role of education in maintaining cultural identity in America.
