LIFEJocelyne was pregnant. She knew that all pregnant women feel tired, but she never felt as though she was getting enough sleep. Sometimes she felt feverish as well. Her sister encouraged her to visit Maison de Naissance, which was in the nearby village of Larnage and provided modern, expert pregnancy care.

It took her another two weeks to get enough money to pay for a motorbike taxi, but she made it to Maison de Nais-sance and waited in the thatched roof courtyard for her ap-pointment. To her surprise, the sta# came out $rst thing in the morning and prayed with all of the waiting women, that their babies would be healthy and that God would guide the hands and minds of the midwives and their assistants.

Shortly a!erward, Jocelyne found herself inside, being weighed and having her blood pressure checked. As soon as she told the assistant midwife about her fatigue and fevers, she was sent to the laboratory. A test con$rmed that she had malaria, and needed treatment right away. Jocelyne was

worried; her friend’s child had been stillborn a!er her friend had malaria during pregnancy. Jocelyne received medicine for the malaria, prenatal vitamins, iron to help build up healthy red blood cells, and an appoint-ment to come back in a month. She kept looking around for where she should pay for her care, but the clerk at the front desk only smiled and told her there would be no charge.

Jocelyne continued to come to Maison de Naissance - four visits in all. She labored naturally and her beautiful daughter was brought into the world at a healthy six pounds. Jocelyn’s story would be very di#erent if not for YOUR gi! of life. Your support of our prenatal care visits, medications and lab tests, brings life to our neighbors in rural Haiti. Many, many thanks!

CAREThe word care can mean many things. At Maison de Nais-sance, it means that women receive counseling, education, medicines, lab tests, and loving attention every day, from expertly trained and dedicated members of our sta#. It means that these elements of caring are provided without charge, and without discrimination, to all women who come to us. "is is particularly important for women with HIV.

In Haiti, there is a stigma attached to having a positive test for HIV, and it can be di%cult for a woman to accept this news. "e counseling that accompanies this testing sets the

stage for our mothers to understand that there is hope. "ey can receive medica-tions to help keep their virus under control and prevent their baby from becoming infected.

Collaboration with the PEPFAR program in Haiti helps provide medication and the sta# necessary to expertly complete the re-cord keeping that insures all of our patients are tested, all of the positive patients are treated, and all of the HIV positive mothers are given medicine in labor to keep their babies safe.

It’s just one element of the care received at MN, but it’s a vital part of Berneice’s story. Berneice’s husband was HIV positive when they met and married, but he did not share this news with her. When she became pregnant right away, she was thrilled and went to Maison de Naissance for an early prenatal visit. She was devastated to learn that she tested positive for the virus, having had no other partners besides her husband. She felt very alone- never having known anyone who survived with HIV. A!er sev-eral visits to MN, she began connecting with the Mothers’ Club and met other women living with HIV and their healthy babies. Berneice was able to complete her course of daily medication, keep her nutrition up, pull herself out of depression, and deliver a healthy baby boy with the help of MN. Your donations kept our doors open and the lights on so that together we could save Berneice’s life, and the life of her son.

ACCESSToday, Madeleine took her baby boy home from the hospital. Four days ago, she didn’t know if either of them would be alive by morning. Madeleine came to Maison de Naissance for a visit, because she felt sick. Her head hurt, her hands and feet were swollen, she was seeing spots, and she had pain by her rib cage. She had been warned by her midwife and her community health worker that these could be signs of preeclampsia, a severe disease which can cause seizures in the mother, bleeding from a torn placenta, and death of the baby.

"ough this was her $rst baby and she had been seen at MN only once, Madeleine knew her due date was a month o# and she wasn’t sure it was time for her baby to come. She only knew how terrible she felt. As she rode the back of her neighbor’s motorbike along the bumpy dirt roads to MN, she became worried. She wasn’t feeling the baby move as much today, and her head was hurting worse. By the time she arrived at MN, her blood pressure was very high and she began bleeding. "e assistant midwife who was seeing

her called for help, and an auxilliaire brought medication to keep Madeleine from having a seizure, while an IV was started.

Grabbing a pack of supplies for a cesarean section, the auxil-liare accompanied Madeleine in the MN ambulance to drive into Les Cayes to the General Hospital, where a cesarean section

could be performed. "anks to Madeleine recognizing the warning signs of preeclamp-sia, the quick work of the MN clinical sta#, and the expert driving of the chau#eur, she made it to the hospital in time to save her son and herself. YOUR donation to keep our ambulance in excellent repair saved Madeleine’s life, and that of her son. We can’t thank you enough!

SKILLIt takes a great team of people to keep the wonderful care going at Maison de Naissance. Our nurse midwives have the greatest responsibil-ity for providing prenatal care and consultations to the women who come through our door every day. "eir title is “In$rm-iere Sage Femme” which literally translates to Nurse Wise Woman.

"is re&ects the years of training, both in the classroom, and in the exam and delivery rooms, which they undertake to complete their profession. Nurse midwives are ably assisted by assistant midwives. Maison de Naissance

was able to send four of our assistant nurses to a training pro-gram in Hinche, run by Midwives For Haiti, to attain an assis-tant midwife title. "eir responsibilities include simple prenatal care, HIV counseling, and vaccinations.

Out in the surrounding area, our community health workers (CHW) are checking blood pressure, distributing vitamins and anti-worm medication, and educating their village neighbors about the importance of prenatal care and skilled attendance at delivery. Our lab technicians work daily to provide routine prenatal labs and HIV/ syphilis testing to every patient! All of these clinical workers are supported by administrative, clerical, facilities management, driving and cleaning sta#.

We do thousands of clinical visits every month- and it takes the whole sta# to do it. Your gi! to pay salaries for our employees is the life blood of Maison de Naissance. We can’t do it without you, so THANK YOU!
