Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation Formerly NATO Undersea Research Centre (NURC), the STO-CMRE (Science and Technology Organization – Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation) is located in La Spezia, Italy. CMRE conducts cutting-edge scientific research and experimentation ranging from concept development to prototype demonstration in an operational environment, and has produced a cadre of leaders in ocean science, modelling and simulation, acoustics and other disciplines, as well as producing critical results and understanding that have been built into the operational concepts of NATO and the nations. CMRE is a leading example of enabling Nations to work more effectively and efficiently together to address the Alliance defence needs. CMRE operates two ships, NRV Alliance and CRV Leonardo, and it is equipped with a fleet of autonomous underwater and surface vehicles and a world-class inventory of seagoing sensors, in addition to its laboratories.
2013 Demonstration
Forces out in the field rather than confined in a container
More protection capabilities at entry level cost Rapid contact designation and warning Deterministic alert and response time Layered security areas Fully configurable response to threat Open architecture to be integrated with additional
systems such as biometrics for improved capability
FEATURES TALON is Simple: can be used by personnel with a basic training. Scalable: sensors/effectors cluster can be added as
required. Users unlimited though web browser connection
Deployable: can be transported to a new location with minimal effort.
Layered, modular and expandable: each system component is, independent from other components. It is possible to add new functionality by adding new modules without changing the rest of the system.
Fault recovering: implementing self diagnostic and auto healing to recover from fault conditions and logging capabilities to report events occurred
Configurable: using simple text files allows describing the configuration and behavior sensor/effector clusters, alarm conditions, reactions to alarm conditions and restricted areas limits
Secure: implements the state of the art technologies and best practices required to enforce networking security.

What is TALON?
TALON is a concept demonstration that aims to show how the latest technology may contribute to port and harbour protection. The goal is to counter the small boat and swimmer/diver threat by enforcing a set of layered exclusion zones without the need for fixed barriers, but also minimise the harm to an innocent parties who may just be in the wrong-place. This is achieved by using a set of inexpensive modular sensors and effectors to provide a semi-automated scalable protection capability that can generate a range of proportional responses to an evolving threat posture. TALON is not just limited to port and harbour protection, the same technologies, techniques and tools can be applied to many other application areas including critical infrastructure protection for example.
