Happy Year of the Snake and 112th anniversary of the Yale-China Association!

Founded in 1901, the Yale-China Association is an independent, nonprofit

organization devoted to building U.S.-China relations at the grassroots level

with programs in education, health, public service, and the arts. Yale-Chinas

work in the classroom, the hospital, and the community brings life-changing

experiences to thousands of people each year in China and the U.S. We

envision a U.S.-China relationship of mutual understanding and profound

respect nurtured by collaborations among individuals and institutions.

Current events in the world today show us how necessary Yale-Chinas work

remains. As politicians and policymakers in both China and the U.S. advocate

for each nations interests, Yale-China is undaunted in its mission to cultivate

deep, respectful relationships between people and institutions. There is much

to celebrate this year, from the kickoff of the first Chinese Arts Festival in New

Haven to the launch of the 100,000 Strong Foundation, of which Yale-China

helped establish. These events serve as a testament to the contributions of all

of the individuals committed to Yale-Chinas program work.

As a celebrant this evening, you inspire us to continue fulfilling Yale-Chinas

mission and vision. We encourage you to learn more about our work tonight

and thereafter.

The 100,000 Strong Foundations mission is to expand and diversify the number of Americans studying Mandarin and studying abroad in China. The goal is to bridge the gap between cultures, strengthen the U.S.-China economic and strategic relationship, and enhance global stability.

The 100,000 Strong Foundation was established in September 2012 to help answer President Barack Obamas call to deepen Americans understanding of China through study abroad. Over the past decade, China has become the second-largest economy in the world and the United States fastest-growing trade partner, as well as a regional strategic power with global reach. Put simply, there is no more consequential relationship than that between the United States and China. It is the 100,000 Strong Foundations mission to promote the expansion and diversification of Americans studying Mandarin and studying abroad in China. The goal is to bridge the gap between cultures, build stronger U.S.-China ties, strengthen the bilateral economic and strategic relationship and enhance global stability. The foundation was born out of a U.S. State Department Initiative of a similar name the 100,000 Strong Initiative which was first announced by President Barack Obama in 2009. Secretary Hillary Clinton launched the initiative in 2010. The effort has been backed by the Chinese government, which is offering 20,000 scholarships for Americans to study in China in support of the Initiative.

Yale- China Award

In 1993, students and faculty from Yale University and New Asia College, with the support of the Council on East Asian Studies at Yale, came together to create the Yale University Chinese University Undergraduate Student Conference. Through this new program, created at a time when there were far fewer options for Yale students to study in China and Chinese students to study at Yale, students from both universities came together for a total of four weeks to create connections and learn about a common theme from each others perspectives.

Twenty years later, Yale-China celebrates the achievements of the YUNA (Yale University New Asia College) Undergraduate Exchange. Since the first conference in 1993-1994, YUNA has grown to include over 300 alumni, or old biscuits, in its ranks. These students carry on Yale-Chinas long tradition of connecting Chinese and Americans through one-on-one relationships through their exchange visits each year. YUNA alumni work in all sectors, in public health, law, education, and business. They all carry with them the memories of visiting New Haven and Hong Kong and of creating strong cross-cultural bonds. Many YUNA alumni are still in contact with their Yale and New Asia counterparts today.

YUNAs lasting impact on its participants exemplifies Yale-Chinas goals and mission and has created a new generation of leaders who understand and are thoughtful about the U.S.-China relationship as we move into a new century with new and complex challenges. Yale-China congratulates YUNAs participants, faculty, staff, and supporters on YUNAs twentieth anniversary and looks forward to welcoming a new generation of biscuits into YUNAs ranks in the coming decade.

YALE GLEE CLUB WISHES YALE-CHINA A HAPPY 112th BIRTHDAY!

The Yale Glee Club is Yales principal undergraduate mixed choir and oldest

musical organization, currently in its 152nd season. One of the most traveled

choruses in the world, the Yale Glee Club has performed in every major city in

the United States and embarked on its first overseas tour in 1928. It has since

appeared before enthusiastic audiences throughout North and South America,

Europe, Asia, and Africa. In the summer of 2005, the Glee Club made its first

trip to Australia and New Zealand. During its 150th anniversary season, the Glee

Club traveled domestically from coast to coast and retraced the steps of its first

European tour with concerts in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the Czech Republic,

and France, adding a stop in Istanbul.

This May, the Yale Glee Club will travel to mainland China and Hong Kong for its biannual international tour. The Yale Glee Club in partnership with the Yale-China Association will conduct outreach workshops and collaborate on cross-cultural concerts across China.
