New Mazda 6 is Beautiful to the Core

Ony those in need of serious optical enhancement will find anything wrong withthe street profile of Mazdas all new 6. Having drooled over its concept at lastyears Geneva Motor Show, it is now here in the flesh, ready to boogie down ourboreens and back-streets, with the same level of cometency as its dismissesmotorway miles.

With its introductory 2.0 litre Petrol model prced from 28,745,(excludingmetallic paint and delivery charges) and the Diesel Sport Saloon available from 31,795, Mazda Ireland have great hopes that the external beauty of their new 6will be enough to attract conquest customers to its forecourts, where a test drivewill allow them to sample the talent of a car that delivers in reality, all that isallured to on the outside.

The 6 will be available in Saloon or Tourer body styles, my test drive taking me over roads that would have Noah askingfor more time, being in the company of the 6-speed manual, 150bhp, 2.2 litre Diesel Tourer. Internally, all is welcoming, from the tactile steering wheel to the soft-touch cockpit materials used, to the satin chrome and black piano glossedinserts, all combine to give a premium ambience. Drivers will find their exact deportment through the multi-adjustableseating and steering, the cockpit and centre consul controls clear and well laid out.Having had a fondness for the original Mazda 6s driving dynamics, I was keen to see if Mazda had carried its DNA intothis new model. Given that there are many cars offering a plethora of toys and a fit n finish of similar quality, I always lookfor those that deliver on the road. I like cars that converse with me, tell me how things are going, what they like, what theydont and escpecially those that can competently deal with our own challenging domestic road network, all the whilekeeping me isolate but informed.

I was delighted during my launch drive to find that this new Mazda 6 is full ofchat, which was much appreciated, as the flow of road rivers in rural Wicklowwas spectacularly dangerous. The ride quality is very good, offering reassurance

and sure-footedness, all the while those inside are free to converse withoutbeing jarred or rattled into a relgous moment. Free of the back roads, the new 6covered the motorway miles with ease. Road noise was not intrusive and againthe road-feel was excellent, the 2.2 diesel subtely capable of dismissing tarmacably assisted by its 380Nm of torque.Akin to other manufacturers, Mazda have their own acronym for their approachto driving dynamics and eco-driving, theirs being SkyActiv Technology. As canbe assumed, the diesel option will be the most popular choice here, all of whichwill come with i-Stop, (Stop/Start), and i-Eloop; Mazdas new regenerative braking system, which turns stored kineticenergy into electricity to power the vehicles electrical systems of air-conditioning, lights etc very clever.

Standard safety features on diesel models include Smart City Brake Support, Hill Hold Assist, and Dynamic StabilityControl. Customers can choose from four new body colours Soul Red Metallic Blue Reflex Mica - Meteor Grey Mica

    and Jet Black Mica.

The expected best sellers here will be the Sport Model in both the Saloon and Tourer format, where the standard toysinclude: 17 Alloy wheels, 5.8 touch screen multimedia audio system, climate control, cruise control and Bluetooth, frontand rear parking sensors and Smart City Brake Support.

Euro for euro, Mazdas new 6 delivers space and grace in this very competitive segment, against the none too shyplayers of Mondeo, Avensis, Insignia, i40, Optima, Accord and Passat. It undoubtedly has a premium feel and its on-roadmanners are impeccable. This is a must-drive car for anyone buying in this segment. Im in love again.

    Summer Luvin from Peugeot

Having been awarded the accolade by the Irish Motoring Writers Association of Continental Irish Small Car of the Year2013, Peugeot Ireland has just sent us a teaser on their upcoming 2008 Crossover due here this summer.

The 2008 has been designed and developed jointly by several international markets. Engineers and stylists from Paris,Shanghai, China and Sao Paulo, Latin America worked together to create the vehicle. It will go into production in 2013,first in France (Mulhouse) then in China (Wuhan) and later in Brazil (Porto Real).

4.16 metres long, the 2008 Crossover has an elevated driving position, carrying aspects of hatchback and SUV. It shouldappeal to those customers who want space, grace and comfort, all wrapped in a compact roomy interior that is urbanmanageable.

Coming with LED daytime running lights and the now familiarly friendly Peugeot face, the 2008 wears its pronounced

wheel arches, rear spoiler and roof bars really well, the optional panoramic roof adding to the internal ambience. Bootaccess is unhindered due to a low loading sill for those with loads to lug.

Fitted with the latest generation e-HDi Diesel and new 3-cylinder petrol engines, the 2008 urban crossover has CO2emissions starting from 99g/km.

    Sensible Sandero set to Saunter

Having released their Duster in left-hand drive for appraisal here in July 2012, prior to its right-hand drive arrival, Daciahave now added their Sandero 5-door, supermini to their ever increasing dealer network.

Unashamedly catering for those looking for maximum bang-for-their-buck and overseen by parent company Renault,Dacia will undoubtedly attract those looking to trade their 5+ year old car against one that has garnished praise from ourEuropean neighbours on its honesty and reliability. 1,733 mm wide by 4,058 mm long, with space for five adults and bootcapacity of 320 litres, the Sandero sits on your driveway for 9990.

Available in two trim levels, Alternative and Signature, the Sandero entry level features Daytime Running Lights,Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), four airbags, height adjustable headrests, 60/40 splitfolding rear seat, electric front windows and Radio with CD, MP3, USB and Bluetooth as standard.

Those choosing Signature trim get additional equipment that includes 15 alloy wheels, leather steering wheel, 7-funtiontrip computer, cruise control, front fog lights, manual air conditioning and rear electric windows.

A short drive in the 1.2 petrol showed it to be quite capable, being smooth and quiet, with road noise at an acceptablelevel, albeit out on the motorway, parents may have to shout a tad louder at those in the rear. It fulfills its function prettywell, coped with various road systems and while it may fail to get a rostrum in the beauty pageant, it will be a good friendto many.

Renault Irelands timing of bringing the Romanian built Dacia brand to market could hardly be better, as the national carpark is aging badly. Current owners of high-mileage and costly pre-2008 cars can now look at replacement with a new, economical and more reliable car, as distinct from moving for a second-hand unit. Reassurance can be gleaned by Daciabeing the fastest growing brand in Europe, where its simplicity and functionality, allied to access to finance, has won itmany driveways. Here a new Sandero can be seen through the curtains for 99 per month.

The Sandero comes with a 3 year/100,000 km warranty, extendable up to 5 years unlimited mileage for 369.

    Rapid Skoda thats not

In rejuvenating a name from its automotivepast, Skodas Rapid is priced to live up to itsmoniker, as it should disappear fromdealerships PDQ. Not to be confused with anability to scream across tarmac, the Rapid is asaloon lookalike, which is actually a hatchbackand sits between the Fabia and Octavia as adriveway choice. It comes with an introductoryprice of 15,995 for the 3-cylinder 1.2 MPi(75bhp) and rises to 24,195 for the 105bhpdiesel Elegance. My test car was theElegance, 1.2 TSI/63kW (86bhp), 5-speed

    manual at 21,405.

As the new Octavia goes up-market, the arrivalof the Rapid, a cousin to the SEAT Toledo, isbuilt on an extended VW Polo platform,(wheelbase of 2,600mm), the Octavia usingthe VW Golf platform. It unambiguously targetsthose looking for room for five and boot space(550 litres), to match, all wrapped in a heritage of reliability that the Skoda name now stands for.

Externally it is a Skoda from way across the car park, most observers calling it an Octavia, requiring new owners toeducate as they go, a similar process undoubtedly going to be required for the term Rapid. It is not the most dynamiclooking cars, but there is a clean, solid look to it that many should find reassuring.

Three trim levels, Active, Ambition (+ 950) and Elegance (16-inch alloys + 750). All Rapids come with 15 wheels, ESC(ESP) six airbags as standard.

On the road, the Rapid is a competent traveller and while it may not engage the driver in you, it is nonetheless capable ofdispensing kilometres of tarmac with ease. Tyre and road noise will require a couple of extra notches up on chit-chat andyour music choice the price of its price having to be paid somewhere.

Overall, the Rapid ticks will many boxes for young families looking for a roomy 5-seater, with the ability to haul half-ahouse at a whim. The range of engines is excellent from petrol to diesel, the drive decent, the build quality withoutcriticism and the residuals undoubtedly strong.

In Dub-speak the term Rapid means great or if you like, Bleedin Deadly so maybe there lies the truth to its name.

BMW Grand Coupe - your future is now

Long, low, sleek and oozing potency, BMWs 640d GrandCoupe will get you at Hello! If you need more, just press theunlock button and when the day-running lights come on youllbe hooked. This latest luxury wunderwagen from BMW will taketo the streets against the Mercedes CLS, Audis A7 and thePorsche Panamera, its sporting executive leanings looking tocapture those whose pulse is still beating with a punch.

Its Bavarian masters refer to it as a 4+1, the middle rear seatpassenger needing to be of small stature to enjoy the companyof this tarmac shredding grand tourismo. Boot space is ausable 460 litres, which expands to 1,265 litres when the rear

    seats are folded.

70kg heavier and built on the 6-Series platform, which hasbeen extended by some 113mm to provide roof and widthroom, my test car was fitted with BMWs wonderfully wonderfulin-line, 6-cylinder, twin-turbo diesel, whose company I shared previously in their delicious 535d some reunions areworth the wait.

Being low set, those of high elevation like myself will have to bend a bit more prior to ensconcing themselves in thesupportive leather sports seats. Once seated, everything is within easy reach, the fittings and furnishings of a qualitysuited to its intentions.

The star of my show was undoubtedly the twin, sequential-turbo 3.0-litre diesel under the hood. Those loving of bhp willfind the 310 Germanic gi-gis enthusiastic company, all the while it can deliver close to 50mpg in old money, plus its CO2emissions of 148g/km sits it in Band C with an annual Road Tax of 390. The Grand Coupes ability to cover ground isbrilliantly assisted by the 630Nm of torque that delivers the horizon into your lap in a manner akin to warp factor.

Open road and Motorway driving is an absolute doddle, the engine running on virtual sleep mode. Fitted with BMWsAdaptive Drive package, you can select ECO PRO, Comfort+, Comfort, Sport and Sport+, depending on your drivingdemand. Selected via a button on the centre console next to the iDrive Controller, this system changes the responsesfrom the gearbox, steering, throttle and stability system.

Suffice it to say that the selection of Sport+ will awaken the dragon, your future will be converted to present and thatpulsation you feel is very probably your licence looking to escape the seamless gearchange through the steeringpaddles that allows selection any of the 8 ratios at a flick - the beauty of the exhaust snarl at revs, unlikely to mitigate yourpredicament if facing a wigged person asking why.

Voted Continental Executive/Luxury Car of the Year 2013 by the Irish Motoring Writers Association, the Grand Coupe isundoubtedly select company. It looks stunning, is brilliant company and I doubt if I would ever get fed up with it. Nuff said.

On the road prices for the Grand Coupe begin with the 640i at 106,010, my 640d test car asking 101,720 to share itscompany on a more permanent basis.
