A welcome from the President

What a feast of music and the arts is on offer for the eleven days of this Festival! As we enter our 39th year, Calne Music and Arts is now one of the longest running Festivals in Wiltshire.

Members of the Committee have worked tirelessly throughout the year to put together a varied programme of concerts, recitals, choral works, folk, jazz, talks, dance, poetry and art. Children from local schools will be very much involved in art, music and dance events; we are welcoming back some favourites such as the Avebury Vocal Ensemble, and we will be introducing some exciting new professional groups and soloists.

A new event, absolutely not to be missed this year, is the mid-week performance of Adolf by Pip Utton - actor/playwright and dramatist.

We are very fortunate to have living in Calne and the surrounding villages so many talented artists, musicians, authors and film directors, both amateur and professional, who feature regularly in our Festival. We also welcome the involvement over the years of the many groups who add to the cultural life of the town. We are very grateful to the management of the Heritage Centre and Calne library for the support they offer for various events, and we are proud to have Marden House as our main concert venue, with its great facilities and concert grand. And last, but not least, we are indebted to all our ‘Friends’ and Sponsors without whom this Festival would not be viable.

The committee is continually seeking ways to develop and enhance the quality of the Festival experience for our audiences, and this year the lunchtime concert series has been revamped and the Marden House kitchen will be serving new style buffet lunches and snacks after each concert. Also new to the Festival is a Quiz Night. Teams of four can test their combined knowledge of music and the arts, from ancient to modern, in a relaxed, fun atmosphere.

I would urge you to take a careful lookat both our newly redesigned Brochure and also our on-line site for what interests you, have fun ‘googling’ performers, book early for popular events and set aside the week for sheer enjoyment.

Carole BrownePresident CMAF

Our 2013 music programme continues the traditions of Calne Music and Arts Festival (CMAF) in celebrating music from our community by promoting local musical talent of all ages and nurturing education in the musical arts.

The Festival will open with an entertaining performance of wit and humour by Swindon’s Gilbert & Sullivan Society. Other highlights include: The Yirdbards (event 7); Avebury Vocal Ensemble (6); Keith Abrams’ talk on Mozart in Vienna during 1786 (9); Paul Tuner and Hayley Lambert (25); and a new Dance Spectacular (28), followed by a Ceilildh (29).

The new style lunchtime series features many fresh faces including Hungarian born soprano Maria Marton and the Millfield Trio (11); our combined choir of Calne schools performing works by Benjamin Britten and the Beatles (14); Marlborough College’s Jazz Band (17): Rowan Patterson, a professional violinist with the Bournemouth Philharmonic (21); and finally, the Somerford Scribes with their poetry, prose and humour (24).

Our next generation of musicians feature throughout the Festival with performances by Wiltshire Young Carers (5); three very brilliant young pianists, Akane Gonda, and Rei and Sai Shimizu (12); and many local schools (15, 16,17 & 26).

Finally, and not to be missed, will be our Festival Finale (31). Join us for an evening of 1950s Ritz High Tea and the sounds of Hollywood with musicians from Tom Bott’s High Society Orchestra.

Simon Parker, Music Advisor

Every year the open Art Exhibition displays an ever expanding range of high quality artworks making the art exhibition at Marden House one of the key highlights of the Festival. If you are a local artist and have never exhibited with us but would like to do so, please contact us for further details ([email protected]). We love to welcome new artists, especially among the younger artists in Calne. Art students are especially encouraged to participate.

In addition to the Open Art Exhibition we have a delightful display of artworks created by the primary school children of Calne and surrounding villages at the local library, a digital image competition and photography by Calne Woodlands Camera Club.

The plan for a Short Film competition is still under discussion and if you have a keen interest and want to be involved please get in touch.

Local artists also participate in an Open Studios programme which is a great chance to meet local artists and experience their work in a more intimate environment. I encourage you all to get out there and visit them in their studios. See details in the brochure and on the website. I hope you all enjoy the creative arts represented in the Festival this year.

AdolfWritten and performed by Pip Utton

7:30pm Admission £5 (£4 friends)

What made Adolf Hitler so compulsive? How could any cultured person follow him to destruction, desolation and genocide to leave a long deep scar on the 20th century?

Created from the words of “Mein Kampf” and “Table Talk”, Pip Utton takes his audience on a journey into themselves, gently coaxing an understanding of the mindset of a nation that could allow a man such as Hitler to take control... But Utton doesn’t stop in the bunker. He plumbs the very sources of racism and exposes just how near the surface of our own lives lurks its insidious influence. This is live theatre at its best.

Powerful, dramatic, challenging, divisive, illustrative and educational. It is utterly provocative and totally necessary.
