One extreme follows another. That is a good way to describe what happened in 2013. The BRANDT
Community Hybrid Trials were challenged with the spring rains. Our goal was to provide our growers
with replicated local data for seed selection. The number of trials planted in 2013 was 23. Two were
not planted because of delayed planting conditions. The hybrid sets differ slightly in the northern trials
vs. the southern trials. The hybrid sets are varied to allow for a wider look at different maturities.
In 2013, the BRANDT Team consulted with representatives from DeKalb, Croplan, Stone and NK, the
four brands we represent, in choosing the latest genetics to evaluate. We also added hybrids from two
competitors to compare with the leading products in the BRANDT portfolio. This is the third year for
the trials. We still believe this is an excellent way to evaluate hybrids at multiple sites with varying
conditions.
On the following pages, the BRANDT Team has provided you with the results of these trials in graph
form for easier comparisons. Included in the graphs are yield, income, cropping information, rainfall his-
tory, and a few comments about each specific location. The income per acre calculation was arrived at by
using $4.50 per bushel and .05 per point moisture discount.
The effects of the spring rain lowered our reportable plot numbers to 13 out of 23. This is a decrease
of 6 reportable plots form 2012. We feel this is still enough consistent data to assist you in making
decisions for 2014.
The BRANDT Team will evaluate this project for 2014. We are committed to helping you get the best
information that will assist you in making profitable decisions. Thank you to all our cooperators for the
2013 Trials.

This corn after soy-bean plot is located south of Virginia on the north side of the Arenzville blacktop. The plot was planted on May 15. The plot
looked good after emergence, but received more rain earlier than needed. Fungicide was applied at VT and the yields turned out well considering there was no more rainfall in the last part of the growing season.

This plot is located west of Franklin. It was planted May 14 in damp conditions. However, we were bailed out by timely rains, good soil tests,
and high organic matter. Rotated after soybeans. We actually missed a couple of rains later in the summer that would have really topped it off. Harvested September 30.

The Community Hybrid Trial at Bill Carter’s was planted on May 16. This plot was located west of Rte. 29 and north of Rte. 123 on Rebbe Road. Field
conditions at the time of planting were good. Although there was a lot of rainfall early in the growing season, this plot did not suffer any visual water damage, which related to the consistency of this plot. This corn on corn plot was sprayed with fungicide. Unbelievable yield average of 258 bushels per acre!

This is a second year corn plot planted on May 19. We used this same spot in 2012 as it is a great piece of real estate. Located just southwest of
Springfield. Conditions were ideal at planting on a 95 degree day. We harvested this plot on October 23. We had pretty good emer-gence and helpful rain and that correlated to a nice tight data set. This plot’s data from this year overlaid with last year shows some solid trends.

The cooperator for the Oakford Community Hybrid Trial was Randy Gum. The location of this plot was near Rte. 97 between Petersburg and Oakford near
Atterberry. This plot was planted on May 15 and there was plenty of moisture at the time of planting. The field where the plot was located is very flat good soil. There were a lot of rains within the first month and a half. I did observe some water damage to some hybrids. With all the rain early and then dry weather, we still managed to pull out an average of 220 bushels per acre!

Constant Farms were the cooperators for one of the Williamsville Community Hybrid Trials. This plot was located about 2 miles east of Williamsville on
East Main St. This plot was planted on May 16 into very good soil conditions. Due to the good drainage on this particular field the plot did not sustain any water damage. This Brandt Community Hybrid Trial was the last plot harvested in the Brandt south region. The stalk quality on some of the hybrids were showing signs of weakness but still harvested fine.

JACOB JONES
The Cropsey Commu-nity Hybrid Trial was located on Rte. 47 between Sibley and Gibson City. Reum Bros. were the cooperators for this trial. Soil test values for the location
are high. The plot was first treated with a tank mix of BRANDT SMART TRIO®, PROLEC® and glyphosate. At tassel, an application of fungicide and N-Boron® was applied. The excessive spring rain followed by the lack of summer rain compromised yield. This location illustrates the ability of the hybrids to perform in a stressful environment.

YALE YOUNG
The Gridley plot was the first Community Hybrid Trial that we planted up north. It turned out that we also had the highest yields with a 231 bushel per
acre average. DEKALB® 63-33 came to the top with the new 64-87 following in second. Thanks to Dan Punke for planting and harvesting the plot this year. Dan and the BRANDT Team at Gridley do an excellent job of keeping this plot maintained. The DEKALB® 62-08 checks on both ends of the plot were only off 5 bushels from one end to the other.

Steve Ricketts har-vested the 2013 Fairbury Community Hybrid Trial in Fairbury this year. This plot was located right on Rte. 24 just west of Fairbury.
This plot gradually got better the farther west we went. STONE 6258 SS won the plot at almost 208 bushels per acre. DEKALB® 60-67 showed up in second place and has been consistent in the community seed trials. This high managed plot looked good all year long.

JACOB JONES
The Towanda Commu-nity Hybrid Trial was located just east of Towanda, on a farm operated by Mark Richard. This was one of the later planted
trials in the northern region, but saw a little more timely rain in August than locations east of Towanda. The plot averaged 216 bu/ac, which reflects the highly productive soils and timely rains. Overall, the plant health and standability were excellent at harvest.

2013
BRAND AVERAGE YIELD RANK AVERAGE INCOME RANKThe graph on these two pages is the average of all 13 trials presented in the book. Stone hybrids were presented in the
north and south trials. They were not included in the north and south averages because different hybrids were planted in
each location. The data presented in 2013 represents a high yield environment. The growing season went from excess rain
in the spring to no rain in July followed by a cool August with timely rains. The average of all locations and hybrids in 2013
was 218.2 bushels vs. 137.1 bushels in 2012. These results raise the question: what hybrids do I plant in 2014? On the
adjacent page are two tables. One with the averages by brand for 2013, the other is the averages by brand of 2012 and
2013 combined. To mitigate risk on your farm, the BRANDT team feels you need to plant hybrids that perform consistently
in varying yield environments. The multi-year table validates performance in varied environments.
Thanks to all cooperators. Without their help, this project would not have been possible. I would also like to thank all the
BRANDT personnel who assisted with the trials in 2013.
