2013 Annual Report

From our Executive DirectorDear Friends,

Two words sum up my experience here as Executive Director: challenge and inspiration. Two years ago, Kitsap Humane Society’s ability to continue as a viable entity was in question. Today, thanks to new leadership and the hard work of dedicated staff, Board members, volunteers and generous supporters, we have turned the organization around, restored public confidence and erased most of an unsustainable $500,000 deficit.

While addressing these deep challenges, we never deviated from our commitment to excellent, life-saving care for the animals. In 2013, our amazing Vet Services team surpassed expectations by performing 4,407 spay/neuter surgeries including a 40% increase in spay/neuter surgeries for low-income households in Kitsap and Mason counties. We also again achieved a high life-saving rate of more than 93% and rehomed over 4,200 pets (including Mork). In this Annual Report, you will see how your gifts have made a difference in the lives of thousands of animals in need.

This work inspires me. Going forward we will pursue the dual goals of strengthening critically important programs for the animals and building long-term sustainability (see our 2014 Strategic Plan on page 2). With your continued support, we will save even more pets in the coming years.

Financial Sustainability 1. Rebuild critically needed operating and capital reserves 2. Achieve a modest operating surplus every year to be fiscally prudent 3. Animal Welfare 1. Maintain a progressive animal welfare mission: • Maintain at least a 94% lives saved rate • Rescue 4,500+ animals per year • Perform over 4,000 spay/neuter surgeries annually, including 2,000 low cost surgeries 2. Rescue over 750 dogs annually from high-kill shelters 3. Enhance medical and behavioral rehabilitation programs – essential to saving lives 4. Build a countywide system for pet licensing 5. Expand volunteerism and fostering of animals

2013 Year in ReviewKitsap Humane Society is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming animals. Our vision is that every adoptable animal has a home. With no time limits, some animals may stay with us for months until they meet their new family. KHS provides critical programs that support the care of animals and the people who adopt them.

We:

• Provide medical and behavioral rehabilitation, foster care and basic training;• Spay or neuter every animal before it is adopted; • Provide adoption counseling to help match the right pet with the right family; • Provide animal rescue and control services for Kitsap County and all of its local municipalities, including Bainbridge

Island, Port Orchard, Bremerton and Poulsbo.

In 2013, we maintained a 93% lives saved rate, one of the highest in the U.S.

Proceeds from our 20th annual Animal Krackers dinner auction increased by 18%.

We rehomed 4,197 animals in 2013 through adoptions at the shelter and through our Outreach Program.

Through our Bremerton Community Cats Program, funded by PetSmart Charities®, we altered almost 700 cats and saw a 36% decrease in the overall intake of stray cats at the shelter.



We set a record this year by spaying/neutering 4,407 pets, including surgeries for pets of low-income households in Kitsap and Mason counties that increased by 40%.

Our volunteers donated almost 34,000 hours of time cuddling cats, walking dogs, helping with adoptions and working in the office.

By renovating our Small Dog Room, we were able to transfer in hundreds of small dogs from other overcrowded shelters.

KHS Animal Control & Rescue responded to 2,203 calls, including the rescue of 97 cats and kittens from a hoarding situation in Bremerton.

Happy Endings Riley’s story is one of the many happy endings for pets at Kitsap Humane Society in 2013.

Riley is a border collie mix who was hit and dragged by a car and suffered extensive injuries, but -- he survived. He was transferred to Kitsap Humane Society where he received the love and care that a survivor like that deserves.

During the weeks he stayed in our Veterinary Recovery Room, he became an ambassador to other animals, comforting and befriending them when they arrived. Soon, Riley was back on his feet.

On Riley’s very first trip with Kitsap Humane Society’s Adoption Outreach Program, he found his forever family.

Riley’s family says, “We wanted to let everyone know that Riley is doing great and we love him so much! He is definitely a true member of the family! Riley, his new doggie sister Neko, and all of our kids are best buds and are inseparable. Thank you so much!”
