nA Letter from the
Chair of the BoardThe mission Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the bet-ter. In my time as Chair of the Board of Directors, we prioritized two aims in accomplishing our mission: ensuring the highest degree of safety for our children, families and volunteers and reducing the length of time children, especially boys, wait to be matched to a mentor.
Keeping children safe is a priority for any good child-serving organization. At Big Brothers Big Sisters we pride ourselves on going above and beyond by dedicating a majority of staff time and agency resources to ensure our volunteers are pre-screened and assessed to the highest national safety standards. We take the time to make certain every volunteer has the heart, time and talent to become a Big. We’re proud to say in 2013 we provided 1,738 children with a meaningful and safe mentoring experience.
Reducing the time children spend waiting to be matched with an appropriate mentor remains a second top priority. The issue is one of supply and demand. In 2013, more than 700 children were waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sister; a majority of these children are boys who wait an average of 18 months for a Big Brother. I’m pleased to report we’ve made great progress on this front through concerted efforts such as the Man-Up Campaign (a recruitment campaign focusing on male volunteers), corporate partner volunteer recruitment events and targeted neighborhood initiatives. By the end of 2013, the number of children wait-ing was reduced to 541 and the average wait time for a boy was reduced to 15 months. Moving the needle in the right direction is important, but there is so much more to do – and our children, especially our young boys, don’t have the time to wait.
You have our promise that we are resolved to fine tune our processes and resource management to serve children as efficiently and safely as possible. It has been my distinct honor to serve as Board Chair for the past two years. As my tenure closes, please join me in welcoming our new Chair, Mr. Derek Bruton, Man-aging Director of LPL Financial, who is a great leader and friend of Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County.
My sincerest thanks to all of you who volunteer, donate or work on behalf of Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County. You recognize that Big Brothers Big Sisters improves the lives of children, directing them toward a more productive and positive future.
Brent Rivard2012-2013 BBBS of SDC Board Chair
Strategic Direction and Accomplishments
• child safety• effective and efficient service delivery • instituting innovative programming for children with the greatest need includingboys, children of Spanish-speaking parents and older youth.
By prioritizing these three areas we further Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mission to affecttransformative change in the lives of children and families of San Diego County.
Adopt enhanced safety standards relating to enrollment and match managementstandards, as set forth by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
Further reduce the time children wait for a mentor, especially boys and children ofmonolingual Spanish-speaking parents.
Implement programs which advance the ability to serve children in high-risk expo-sure situations; and middle and high-school aged youth who are more difficult toengage in traditional community mentoring programs.
Meet or exceed all Big Brothers Big Sisters of America national benchmarks toachieve gold standard determinants of mentoring outcomes.
Support staff and volunteers in their efforts to provide a meaningful, inspiring andlife-changing experience for children.
The Agency’s strategic direction focuses on three main areas:
Inspired by this strategic direction in 2014 Big Brothers Big Sisters will:
Building on the strategic vision, the agency is poised to grow in exciting new ways in 2014.Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County will initiate an innovative program, Beyond School Walls, to more intentionally serve middle and high school-aged children. Older youth are often more difficult to engage in the traditional, community-based mentoring model. The need for intervention, however, is often most critical in the pre-teen and teenage years.Beyond School Walls will be hosted at a corporate or university location, utilizing the hosting corporation’s employees as mentors. The format of this program provides a valuable opportunity
for adolescents to see first-hand the potential of what is possible in their future, how their future ties to a post- secondary education and what it takes to succeed in the work place. In addition to the one-to-one mentoring that is the core of all agency programming, each Beyond School Walls mentoring session will begin with a group-based, guided conversation starter
focusing on skills, attitudes and habits necessary to succeed in a post-secondary or professional setting utilizing best-in-class topics provided by the Ken Blanchard Companies. Big Brothers Big Sisters will also launch a targeted recruitment campaign, Manos a la Obra (All Hands on Deck), in the Spring of 2014 to increase the number of Spanish-speak-ing mentors. Children who have monolingual Spanish speaking parents, especially boys, wait the longest for a Big. The job is a big one, but with the continued support of volunteers, donors and community partners the children and families of San Diego County will know they have a caring and committed partner in Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Evidence-Based Mentoring
Big Brothers Big Sisters continues to be steadfast in its commitment to provide quality, impactful mentoring services to children. To achieve the highest standards possible, we continually use data and research to strengthen its service delivery systems in close partnership with industry-leading researchers.
Fundamental to our mentoring model are strong, long-lasting relationships with caring volunteers. Research has shown that the strength of the relationship between a volunteer and child is critical to more positive outcomes for the child. In recognition of this, Big Brothers Big Sisters utilizes a research-based tool to measure the Strength of Relationship (SoR) for each of our matches.
The SoR is a powerful instrument in our journey to higher quality impact. Specifically, this SoR measure can be used to effectively track mentoring match progress and increase the probability that the match can be retained and outcomes achieved. The SoR provides a systematic, objective method of evaluating our matches in real time and identifying the ones that would benefit from additional support, leading to more successful, long-term mentoring relationships.
Additionally, Big Brothers Big Sisters developed a Youth Outcomes Survey (YOS) in partnership with leading researchers to measure progress in educational success, avoidance of risky behaviors and socio-emotional competency. The YOS builds on two long-standing research studies conducted by Public/Private Ventures (P/PV) that found youth enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters programs experienced positive improvements in those areas. The YOS fosters program accountability and improvement to achieve our desired impact.

Phil’s BBQ sponsors our single largest event, Phil’s Big BBQ at the Ballpark, where guests are treated to a Phil’s BBQ dinner and Padres game. More than 3,000 supporters and 1,000 Bigs and Littles attended the BBQ, which is purported to be the largest single tailgating event in California! A good time was had by all while raising $77,000+ for Operation Bigs! Phil’s BBQ is a proud supporter of the men and women who defend our country and their families.

Bumble Bee Foods is one of Big Brothers Big Sisters most valued investors. During 2013, Bumble Bee Foods was the primary supporter of High School Bigs, pairing high school-aged mentors with elementary-aged children and sole sponsor of Bigs in Schools at Logan Elementary in City Heights. Bumble Bee Foods also partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters to launch its newest program, Beyond School Walls, serving youth aged 12-17 who are matched with employees at a corporate sponsor’s office location. Several Bumble Bee Foods employees volunteered as Bigs for Bigs in School or Beyond School Walls. Bumble Bee Foods also matches employee donations and supports employee fundraising efforts on behalf of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

2013 PERSON OF THE YEAR – JAMES BRENNAN
2013 BIG OF THE YEAR – BIG BROTHER PAT GRIMM
“Pat is the best Big Brother ever, because he has made me a better person in every way possible.” -Little Brother JosephPat has been a Big Brother to Little Brother Joseph for seven years! Without fail, Pat has spent time with Joseph at least three days each month barbequing, attending sporting events, watching movies, fishing, doing homework, or just talking about life and the future. Pat has seen Joseph grow from a young boy into a young man; teaching him how to shave, sharpening up his basketball skills and helping Joseph gain the confidence to new friends. Joseph credits Pat for helping him to make straight A’s for the first time this year!
LPL Financial has served as sponsor of Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego’s premier event, the Gourmet Dinner, for the past 12 years. The company’s investment has gone far beyond underwriting the event by donating staff and LPL partner talent, time, and resources to ensure the Gourmet Dinner is a wonderful event that yields almost 25 percent of the total annual income needed to support the Agency’s service to San Diego’s children.
2013 GOURMET DINNER SPONSOR – LPL FINANCIAL
Recognizing the need to recruit more male volunteers, the Jack in the Box Foundation locally sponsored the first-ever, statewide recruitment initiative called Man Up California. The inaugural campaign harnessed the power of social and broadcast media to reach men through a number of integrated touch points, includ-ing an interactive recruitment website. The San Diego campaign successfully doubled the number of male inquiries received the year prior and reduced wait time for boys to be matched with Big Brother from more than 18 months to 15 months.
