Dear Friends of Cornell Cooperative Extension,

It is an understatement to say that 2013 was an eventful year for

Herkimer County and Cornell Cooperative Extension. The greatest issue

facing us on the agricultural scene was the tremendous flooding this

past summer in the valley and outlying areas. It would seem that these

weather events, going back to Irene, are increasing in duration and

intensity. The single greatest impact on CCE was not only the flooding

of productive farmlands, but serious repercussions regarding food

safety with the silt and debris heaped upon local gardens. Extension’s

role became that of advising farmers who lost crops and homeowners

whose yards, basements and plantings were under water for hours or

even days. Then the post flooding issues of mold and rot came into

play just as they did in the neighboring county of Schoharie in 2011.

The Central New York Dairy and Field Crops Team spent the next

several weeks visiting farms and helping the owners plan out the

remainder of the growing year and reclaiming what could be saved.

Horticultural and nutrition educators took numerous calls from Herkimer

County residents concerned about the possible contamination of their

homes and grounds. Extension’s educational role helps fill the void

created in the aftermath of a weather event; when people ask “what

now?”

I hope you will look at some of our programs outlined in the following

pages. The strength of Cornell Cooperative Extension in New York is

that it is there to serve the needs of each county and is specific to that

county. Once again, the staff and Board of Directors of CCE Herkimer

County wish to express their appreciation for the support shown by the

Herkimer County Legislature through program funding and also the

hundreds of volunteers who make those programs possible. It is my

greatest wish that 2014 will be a year of serenity and peace for all and

that mother nature will smile upon the Mohawk Valley once more.

Sincerely,

Outreach to targeted limited income audiences through funding

collaborations with the Herkimer County Department of Social Services

(Eat Smart NY) and Cornell University (Expanded Food and Nutrition

Education Program) impacted 330 families through home visits and group

work representing 1101 family members. One hundred percent of

graduates showed improvements in one or more nutrition practices (i.e.

making healthy food choices, reading nutrition labels, etc.). Ninety-three

percent of graduates showed improvement in one or more food resource

management practices (i.e. planning meals, comparing prices, using a

grocery list, etc.).

Comments from graduates: “I’m shopping

differently and learned ways to stretch a buck. I’m trying better eating habits. Very

informative.” “I started reading labels; cut back on junk food; and go walking and biking

more with my children.” and “I’m cooking more fresh foods; use menu planning; and

walk daily.”

“Eat a Rainbow” was the theme of programs presented by nutrition staff at Morning

Programs at elementary schools in Mohawk, Little Falls, Poland, and Dolgeville. Over

1170 children, staff, and parents were reached with the message of consuming more

vegetables and fruits every day.

“Think Your Drink” programs were presented by nutrition

staff at 5 summer youth programs in Little Falls,

Montgomery Street Playground and Remington Elementary Playground in Ilion,

Kuyahoora Valley Town Park in Poland and Town of Ohio Playground reaching

108 youth and staff.

The 4-H Government Intern Program is sponsored by the Herkimer County Legislature and administered by the

Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development Program. Twelfth grade students from all Herkimer County

school districts are invited to participate each semester in exploring current issues confronting county

government; and learning more about the functions of county government through its committee system.

Numerous county employees and elected officials assist in delivering insights, which enhance this educational

opportunity. Thirty-one students from seven school districts participated in the spring and fall sessions this year.

Fifteen students from seven Herkimer

County school districts visited Albany

in April as a culmination of the

Government Intern Program. The trip

was chaperoned by Herkimer

County Legislator Helen Rose,

Mohawk teacher Karen Guidi, Town

of Webb teacher Tim Leach, and

Cornell Cooperative Extension staff.

Upon arrival at the state capital, the

students visited the Court of

Appeals; had a tour of the Capitol;

and were welcomed by Senator

James Seward, Assemblyman Marc

Butler, Assemblywoman Claudia

Tenney and Assemblyman Anthony

Brindisi. The group sat in on the NYS

Assembly in session, and were

recognized on the floor by the

representatives.

In 2013, the CCE Herkimer County 4-H Program reached over 2,100

youth throughout the county. These youth were served through the

traditional 4-H Club program, school enrichment, day camps, special

interest and independent study. The 4-H program is able to operate

with the help of over 350 dedicated volunteers.

There are 18 4-H clubs with 167 members and 43 independent 4-H

members located throughout Herkimer County. All 4-H members are

encouraged to take part in community service activities in various ways.

These include: participating in the Kids Heart Run & Walk, volunteering at

the Herkimer County Humane Society, bake sales to benefits Strides

Against Breast Cancer, visiting nursing homes, building and painting a horse jump that was donated to the

Empire State Quarter Horse Youth Association’s annual Ride-for-a-Cure event, and Candlelight Caroling at the

Farmers’ Museum.

Robotics Camp was offered for beginners at HCCC. Students learned to use the LEGO NXT robots and

programmed them to perform set tasks using math and science. This past year, Robotics has continued to grow,

with monthly 4-H robotics activity meetings held at CCE office.

Members participated in demonstrations at the Herkimer County

Fair; and were awarded a blue ribbon at the New York State Fair

4-H Robotics’ Challenge.

Workshops were offered for sewing and photography. The sewing

workshop attendees made 5 gallon bucket organizers. Members

learned to use a sewing machine, follow a pattern and use their

creativity. The photography workshop taught 4-H’ers how to use a

camera and different aspects that go into taking a great picture.

Several 4-H members performed cooking demonstrations and

helped fair-goers make pinecone bird feeders in the Youth Building

during the Herkimer County Fair.

It seems like the past three years mother nature has let it all

hang out in the Mohawk Valley. The June floods of 2013 will

long be remembered for their intensity and effect on our

towns and villages. The resulting debris and waste sediment

became a major concern to gardeners and homeowners in

the wake of the flooding. Cornell Cooperative Extension

handled dozens of calls on garden and food safety in August

and September. On a better note, our Mohawk Valley Garlic

and Herb Festival was a rousing success with over 65 vendors

and 2,500 to 3,000 attendees. This event has become a real

feature of our fall season and is superbly managed by Juli

Webster and her mother with dozens of other volunteers. This was the 13th year of the festival and it has grown

at a steady rate each year.

This summer, educator Bernie Armata set traps up for Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD) in three

county locations. These tiny fruit flies can destroy entire crops of soft skinned berries, but prefer

raspberries. Throughout June and July, weekly checks of berries in West Winfield, Herkimer, and

Frankfort turned up nothing. Then in the third week of August, all three locations tested positive for these pests.

The results were given to the Geneva Experiment Station and added to NY State statistics. It was learned that

Herkimer and Jefferson Counties were among the last to be infested. A local commercial blueberry grower

voluntarily reported SWD on his raspberry plot while the blueberries remained free of the flies. This indicates that

the pests have a marked preference for the brambles over other soft fruits. The SWD monitoring will most likely

continue through the 2014 growing season as Cornell entomologists, together with county staff, attempt to track

the infestation throughout New York and neighboring states.

In September, CCE offered a workshop called “Introduction to Woodlot Management” given by local DEC

forester, Andrew Drake. We will continue to offer more programs in natural resources in the spring; starting with a

woods walk with assistance from the New York Forest Owner’s Association volunteers. Incidentally, Herkimer

County has two Master Forest Owner graduates who volunteer their time and expertise for local landowners.

These individuals attend an intensive four day course at the Cornell’s Arnot Forest to gain the title of Master

Forest Owner.

CCE of Herkimer County continues as a partner in the “Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work and

Play” (CHP) grant from the NYS Department of Health through Herkimer County HealthNet. In year

four, the “Herkimer County Local Foods Map” was revised with 64 farms listed along with nine Farmers

Markets. Ten thousand copies were distributed at 110 locations.

Eighteen new Herkimer County Produce Cycle brochures have been printed over the past two years.

Each brochure gives information on growing, harvesting, preparing, preserving and purchasing

vegetables that grow well in Herkimer County; and include healthy recipes using each vegetable.

The Country Store in Salisbury Center and Haver’s Nice-n-Easy in Poland, local

convenience stores in rural areas of Herkimer County, continued with the project to

increase the amount of vegetables they sell in their stores. The Norway General Store in

Newport was added this summer to the project. Each store chose three vegetables to

feature during specific months of the year. While a vegetable was featured in each store,

the information on the CHP store displays matched that of the featured vegetable.

Herkimer County Produce Cycle Brochures were placed on the display monthly to educate

shoppers, along with healthy recipe cards that included the featured vegetable. The

featured vegetable’s recipes were served to customers in each store’s restaurant and deli;

and often “sold out” when served.

The Country Store in Salisbury was awarded a new

produce cooler from the grant to sell fresh vegetables.

The new produce cooler has made the vegetables more visible and readily

accessible at the checkout counter.

The Creating Healthy Places Program Facilitator along with the BOCES

Regional Program for Excellence Summer Intern provided information on using

local foods at nine farmers markets in Herkimer County this summer; sharing

recipes and tasting samples with over 1,400 people.

Selecting malting barley varieties for New York conditions

In June of 2012, the NY State Legislature passed the

Farm Brewery Law. This means to receive a Farm

Brewery license, the business must primarily use NY

produced ingredients in the production of their

product. Malting barley is an important ingredient in

beer production; but no malting barley is currently

being grown in NY. To meet the demand, the Central

NY Dairy and Field Crops Team and the Cornell Small

Grains Project received a $40,000 grant from the NY

Farm Viability Institute to test malting barley varieties

that will perform under NY conditions. Currently available malting barley varieties are grown under the drier

conditions of the Upper Midwest and are prone to greater disease pressure here in the more humid east.

Preliminary results from 2013 show that although some varieties have promise, Fusarium Head Blight will be a

major problem for growing malting barleys without the use of fungicides or finding more resistant varieties. As a

result of this project, potential malting barley growers should have the agronomic and malting characteristics

information available to choose varieties adapted to NY when that information does not currently exist.

Team aids farms amid times of wet weather and flooding

The wet weather that started in late May and carried through the floods of late June and

early July had a huge impact on the farming community. Many acres of corn were never

planted or lost to wet soil conditions and flooding. Hay crops were never harvested or late.

The Central NY Dairy and Field Crops Team provided support by answering questions on:

replanting corn, how late corn can be planted, what are alternatives to corn late in the

season, how much nitrogen lost due to the saturated soils, and changes to herbicide

programs with taller weeds sprayed late. The team also provided information on how to

price corn silage, since dairy farms were looking to replace lost crops and farms that had

extra were looking to sell.

Helping producers make first cutting harvest timely and profitable

For the past 10 years, the Central New York Dairy and Field Crops team has monitored the

quality of first cutting hay crop in the field to give producers a better idea of when they should

begin harvest. Producers are emailed the results within the day of measuring, so they can make

important management decisions. Each year we receive more requests to be emailed the

results of this weekly monitoring. This year, 67 fields in the teams’ region were tracked, with a

difference in elevation of fields of over 1300 feet from low to high and 80 miles north to south.

These differences in field location create over a week difference of when to begin cutting grass

hay fields.

Workshops helps dairy producers get the most out of their feeding program

The cost of feed (both home grown & purchased) is the single largest expense on a dairy farm. The “Getting the

Most Out of Your Feeding” workshop was conducted on six farms throughout the team region, so that

participants have a hands-on experience seeing how these farms parlay feed into profitable milk production.

Participants learned how to manage feed inventories and minimize shrink on forages & grains; make the most out

of wet feeds with proper fermentation and feed out management; and how to deliver feed to the cows daily

while dealing with dry matter, cow numbers and actual intake changes.

Winter Dairy Management Schools look to make

dairy farms more resilient in changing times

The saying “bend but don’t break” certainly applies to how dairy farms

need to manage if they are to survive in the future. This year’s “Dairy

Winter Management Schools: Managing Your Dairy for Resiliency” held

throughout the state, looked to identify key areas where dairy farms

need to improve management if they are to survive. The 99

participants who attended local sessions in Ballston Spa and Richfield

Springs heard a message that emphasized modernizing facilities, cow

comfort, and lighting to improve health and performance for

profitability.

Throughout the year, 4-H members

participate in horse, dairy cattle,

sheep, beef cattle, dairy goat, rabbit,

cavy and poultry projects by attending

clinics and various shows on the

county, regional, state, and national

levels. 4-H members also participate in

animal quiz bowls, challenges and

judging contests. Twenty members

from Herkimer, Oneida, and Madison

Counties participated in a regional

poultry clinic where they learned how

to prepare their chickens for show and

how to present them to the judge.

Thirty-seven Herkimer County 4-H members exhibited dairy cattle, beef, swine, dairy goats, and sheep at the 66th

Annual Farmers’ Museum Junior Livestock Show. 4-H members also exhibited projects and animals at both the

Herkimer County Fair and the New York State Fair.

4-H clubs celebrated National 4-H Week by constructing displays in their communities. The theme for 2013 was

“Join the Revolution of Responsibility.”

To celebrate New York “Ag Literacy Day 2013” the book “The

Beeman” by Laurie Krebs & Valeria Cis was read to every second

grade class in Herkimer County and then donated to the school library.

This was made possible by Herkimer County Farm Bureau. After

reading the book the children were able to sample different flavors of

honey.

Many of our club members participated in Public Presentation events

throughout the 4-H year. Three Herkimer County members then went

on to the District Public Presentation event in Rome.

Page 20: 2013 Annual Report 2014 Calendar€¦ · Dear Friends of Cornell Cooperative Extension, It is an understatement to say that 2013 was an eventful year for Herkimer County and Cornell

2013 marked the fifteenth year of a unique partnership between Cornell

Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Herkimer County, NY FarmNet, and Herkimer

County Mental Health. The purpose of the collaboration has been to provide

improved support and assistance to the Herkimer County farm community

affected by the stresses of operating a farm business and farm life.

In March, over 75 area farm families from eight counties attended the “Legal Aspects of Farm and Estate

Transfer” workshop. Speakers included Lorraine Lewandrowski, Esq. Agricultural and Food Law Attorney, Patrick

Lamb, consultant with NY FarmNet, Gerda Mortelette, Community Health Advocate with the Mohawk Valley

Perinatal Network, and Jeffrey Rheinhardt and Chris Bray, Radley and Rheinhardt, P.C. Topics included wills of

different kinds, laws concerning trusts, Medicaid issues, powers of trustees, power of attorney, living wills, and

estate taxes. Response by participants was positive with comments to “what was the most important thing

learned” including “use of trusts and wills”; “importance of estate

planning”; “elder law information” and “the importance of having a plan

and implementing it”.

In September, NY FarmNet had a booth at the Central NY Farm Progress

Show where over 10,000 people attended the two-day event, showcasing

a variety of farm services and programs (over 100 exhibitors this

year). Staff from the Dispute Resolution Center of Herkimer County

Agricultural Mediation Program at Catholic Charities assisted with the

booth reaching over 150 farm families.

Grant funds supported promoting local foods at the CNY Farm Progress Show, Garlic

Festival, Gems Along the Mohawk Harvest Fest, and Family Day at the Farm reaching

over 1,560 participants.

This year calls to NY FarmNet have continued to be high with over 6,000 contacts. For

more information, call NY FarmNet at 1-800-547-FARM (3276). A 24-hour, 7 day a week

answering service is available and is free and confidential. Their website is

Over 98 participants from the Herkimer Working Solutions Career

Center Employment Readiness Program have joined the “Eat Smart

NY” program in the first year of this pilot effort. Nutrition staff from

CCE provide a four session series of workshops covering healthy food

choices, reading food labels, stretching food dollars, and increasing

physical activity. "The focus of our Employment Readiness Program is

to equip our customers with the tools needed to be successful in

today's job market. This collaboration with Cornell Cooperative

Extension has added value to our program by also providing

information that can help them lead a healthier lifestyle,” added

Karin Zipko, Herkimer Working Solutions Manager.

Comments from graduates of the program regarding the changes they have made in their food choices and

physical activities since starting the program include: “I learned to look at

labels a lot closer and to eat healthier”; “I’m shopping smarter”; “I eat

more fruits and vegetables”; and “I’ve started walking more”.

A new nutrition education initiative this year through “Eat Smart NY”

involved working with local grocery stores that redeem at least $50,000

per month in SNAP benefits (Food Stamps). Informational displays

highlighting increasing vegetable and

fruit consumption, reducing sugary

beverages, and stretching food dollars

have been shared at Herkimer Walmart

shared with consumers. Over 200

consumers are reached each month

through these efforts.

Capital Days is a two-day event where two delegates from each NYS county

meet in Albany for a government awareness program. The goals of this program

are to achieve a better understanding of the scope of NYS government; to gain

a better understanding of our county as it relates to NYS; and to provide the

opportunity for delegates to meet with their NY State Legislators.

Youth from across the state participated in the Agri-Business Career Conference.

This is a two-day conference held in Cobleskill sponsored by 4-H, The New York

Farm Bureau Foundation for Agricultural Education and SUNY Cobleskill. In

Herkimer County, the Central New York Farm Progress Show helps offset the cost

by donating money for Herkimer County youth to attend. The 4-H Earn-a-Calf

Program, which is sponsored by the CNY Farm Progress Show, provides one

youth with $500 toward the purchase of a calf to give them an opportunity to

own and show a purebred dairy animal.

The 4-H program reached

over 1,900 youth through

school enrichment programs

such as, Farm/Home Safety

Day Camp (for 5th grade

students), Conservation Field

Day (for 6th grade students),

the Government Intern

Program (for high school

seniors), and Ag Literacy Day

(2nd grade students). Also in

the mix of things were farm

tours for various school

groups.
