IntroductionThe statistics in the latest edition of the EBLEX yearbook show that 2012 was another memorable year for the UK sheep industry. However, where 2011 was noteworthy for record prices and buoyed optimism, 2012 will be remembered for a drop in prices and severe weather conditions. While the average lamb price for the year was only five per cent lower on the year at 182.9p/kg liveweight (lwt), by December, prices were as much as 30 per cent down on the year and at three-to-four-year lows. At the same time, the cost of production has increased considerably due to the difficult season.

Despite more lambs being born, overall lamb slaughtering numbers in 2012 fell five per cent to 11.9 million head. Weights were little changed, but total mutton and lamb production fell five per cent on 2011 levels.

Exports performed well, being only two per cent lower year-on-year at 94,700 tonnes. As such, a larger proportion of domestic production was exported. This resilience of export volumes was helped by the dramatic rise in trade with non-EU markets, with volumes to these countries more than doubling and trade with Hong Kong increasing nearly fivefold. With farmgate prices generally lower, the value of exports fell by six per cent to £354 million.

The UK remained a net exporter of sheep meat for the second year running, with import volumes at 86,100 tonnes, a drop of nearly three per cent on year-earlier levels. This import position saw a dramatic change in the second half of the year with volumes having been over 13 per cent lower at the halfway point. This turnaround was driven by much increased volumes from New Zealand entering the UK at much lower prices in the final five months of the year.

Results from the UK December 2012 livestock survey show that the breeding flock has continued to grow despite the difficulties faced by producers. The other key outcome of this survey is the evidence of the large carryover of lambs due to the poor weather, which is expected to affect slaughter patterns in 2013 significantly.

While a number of factors, such as global demand, the weather and the influence of other global players in the lamb market, remain beyond the control of the UK industry, the future is not all bleak. Demand for proteins is growing in many parts of the world and the UK continues to expand its global presence in exporting sheep meat. Additionally, there remains a large scope to improve the efficiency of the industry and allow all participants to be better able to weather the volatility that now seems to be a common part of the world market.

The contents of the 2013 EBLEX yearbook provide an overview of facts and figures from the beef and sheep sectors during 2012. We hope it serves as a useful guide for industry and other interested stakeholders.

NotesThe Marketing ChainThe information given in this section has been produced by AHDB. It includes data derived from a number of sources as detailed elsewhere in the publication. In addition, and in order to give as full a picture as possible of the UK meat market, data in some areas has been estimated, based on various surveys and known information.

Livestock NumbersThe survey and census figures are collected for the United Kingdom and its regions by the various Agriculture Departments: Defra, Nawad, Dardni and Seerad. The census of agricultural holdings is carried out in June each year. December data is sample data.

Slaughterings and ProductionSlaughterings and production figures are provided by the UK Agriculture Departments. Further analysis, such as average carcase weights and the deadweight/liveweight marketing split, has been undertaken by AHDB.

ConsumptionThe data shown comes from a variety of sources, which are shown underneath each table. Due to the different methodologies employed by the various sources, it is sometimes not possible to make comparisons between the tables. It is, therefore, important that note is taken of the footnotes to the tables which indicate, for example, whether imported processed products are included or not, and if consumption both in and outside the home has been measured.

Livestock and Meat PricesAll data is sourced from AHDB unless otherwise indicated. Deadweight producer prices are collected from a sample of abattoirs, while liveweight producer prices are collected from a large sample of auction markets. For more information about how this data is collected, contact the Market Intelligence Department of AHDB.

Imports and ExportsStatistics for trade between the UK and non-EU countries are collected by HM Revenue & Customs at the point of entry and exit. For trade with other EU countries, a system called Intrastat is used, based on trade undertaken by traders over a threshold value. Where trade data is given for EU-27, the 12 new Member States are included in trade figures prior to January 2007 for comparison purposes.

The trade figures are subject to revision as more information becomes available.

AbattoirsStatistics shown are based on data collected by AHDB. For comparison purposes, some of the throughput figures are quoted in GB Livestock Units (GBU) where 1 GBU = 1 cattle beast = 2 pigs = 5 sheep.

Auction MarketsAll data is based on sales of finished stock only from markets which reported prices to AHDB. For comparison purposes, some of the throughput figures are quoted in GB Livestock Units (GBU) where: 1 GBU = 1 cattle beast = 2 pigs = 5 sheep.

Carcase ClassificationAll data is sourced from AHDB, based on carcases classified by Meat & Livestock Commercial Services Ltd. For cattle, the sampling rate of carcases in 2012 was 1 in 3 and 412,632 carcases were analysed. For sheep, the sampling rate was 1 in 25 with 133,398 carcases analysed.
