into customers, and AZSA added new members to the association.Thank you, Travis Morrow of National Self Storage, for your excellent swan song as co-chair of the AZSA Trade Show Committee. Next year, Travis is being kicked upstairs to be AZSA president and co-chair Poppy Behrens of Mini-Storage Messenger will move into the leadership position for the trade show. She has a few tricks up her sleeve, so next year’s show promises to be quite an encore to this year’s success. Please join the AZSA Trade Show Committee as we plan for 2014 to help us make the most of this opportunity. We are also thankful to a number of AZSA members who joined the board of directors to form a powerful Trade Show Committee. Special thanks go to Jeff Gorden of Eagle Financial Realty Services – The Argus Self Storage Network, who served as speaker liaison and Round Table Committee chair. His persistence and dedication greatly facilitated trade show logistics. SBOA’s Mario Macaluso joined Jeff on the Round Table Committee to offer us a great slate of experts discussing everything from crime prevention to phone skills. Double J Court Self Storage’s Bill Green, past board member, again joined AZSA’s exhibitor liaison Diane Gibson to help vendors have the most successful experience possible at the trade show.Thank you to everyone involved. From the encouraging news on Arizona self storage market condi-tions to the after-hours party hosted by SpareFoot, the 15th Anniversary Arizona Self-Storage Conference and Trade Show was full of valuable training, insight into our business, and some good old fashioned fun.We also raised record amounts to fuel Kure It’s cancer research efforts. Many exhibitors, attendees and board members contributed auction items, bid on them, and made donations to

the fabulous door prize—a two-night stay at the Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino, complete with gift cards to use at the seven on-site restaurants, scores of stores in the adjacent outlet center, and of course on the casino floor. If you see the lucky door-prize winning AZSA member sitting pool-side on your next visit to Wild Horse Pass, thank them for their donation to Kure It.Check the website for details on upcoming AZSA events, including June networking breakfasts in Phoenix and Tucson, summer workshops in the northern part of the state, and a new training series scheduled to be launched in Phoenix next October. Past workshops can be viewed in the members section of the AZSA website. Subjects range from customer service to lien laws and the foreclosure process. Please let us know what is on your mind and how we can help you by visiting us on Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter. And, as always, get in touch with us for more information. Visit our website, www.azselfstorage.org, or contact Anne Mari DeCoster, AZSA executive director, at [email protected], 602-374-7184, PO Box 44031, Phoenix AZ, 85064.

Arkansasarssa.orgThe Arkansas Self Storage Associa-tion has been busy with two pieces of legislation. Act 364 will revise the Arkansas Lien Law and Act 588 will modify the rules for selling insurance without a license. The changes to the laws will take effect 90 days after the end of the 2013 legislative session. The lien law changes include a cap on late fees, a limit on liability of $5,000, and allows for the use of email as an accepted form of notification if the tenant gives consent. The other piece of legislation regards the sale of tenant insur-ance. Currently under Arkansas law, you are not allowed to receive any compensation or commission for the

sale of tenant insurance without an Arkansas insurance license. It allows the owner/operator of a self storage facility to receive a commission or compensation for the sale of tenant insurance under a limited license. This limited license will only apply to the sale of tenant insurance. The state will require the owner/operator to register with the Arkansas Insur-ance Commission to receive the limited license. Our first regional meeting was held in Springdale on April 11. It was very well attended. Changes in the lien law and insurance rules were discussed along with required changes to our model contract. We had another meeting in Russellville April 25, and plan to have one in northeast Arkansas. Our expo will be August 28–29 in Rogers. Please give us some feed-back about what you like to see at your next training event. It’s your association; get what you want out of it.Also, if you have any interest in serving on the board or becoming more involved, your volunteer time and ideas would be greatly valued. The Kansas Self Storage Owners Association’s mission is to provide value and potential for growth by working together in our regional trade organization. Be sure to take a moment to consider the many (and ever-increasing) services to the storage industry that your trade asso-ciations offer. None of us is as strong alone as we are collectively.

“KSSOA strives to provide high return on members’ dues investment on any one of its single member bene-fits. Louisianassala.orgThe Louisiana Self Storage Associa-tion would like to thank the amazing efforts of Lana Griffin and the other board members to stop sales taxes from being imposed on self storage rents in Louisiana. Lana sat in on the House Ways and Means Committee hearing, prepared to testify on the damage a sales tax on our industry would cause, when the author of HB610, Representative Talbot of New Orleans, voluntarily shelved his bill. Lana also met with the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Representative Robideaux from Lafayette, and was told he would not be bringing his bill, HB653, before the committee this session. This is very positive news for the self storage industry in our state, but the fight is not over. While the bills were shelved, and not likely to be brought up again in this legislative session, the language was not struck from the bills that self storage would no longer be excluded from exemption of sales tax implementation, like the rest of the commercial real estate sector. The SSALA will continue to monitor for any bills which threaten our industry and be proactive in fighting against unfair attempts to put a sales tax on our industry. The annual spring luncheon in Bossier City April 17 was a huge success, with our highest turn out ever. Guest speakers included former Louisiana Secretary of Educa-tion Ollie Tyler, who gave a great presentation on positive ways to motivate employees, and Walt Cade, of “Storage Wars Texas,” who enter-tained the crowd while presenting material on ways to improve your lien sale process and turn out. The SSALA congratulates those owners that brought their managers to the

Mainemainessa.comThe Maine Self-Storage Association’s 2013 conference at Hollywood Casino was a resounding success! Bob Copper of Self-Storage 101 regaled attendees on Thursday afternoon with ways to improve their income through ancillary products and services. There were a lot of useful tips on easy ways to improve revenue. Bob’s presentation was followed up by roundtable presentations where attendees were educated on various topics by industry vendors. Afterward, owners, operators and managers mingled and networked with each other and with vendors during the cocktail reception. After a hearty buffet breakfast on Friday, Anne Ballard, president and founder of Universal Management Company, presented on how to “Rev Up Your Income and Marketing.” Attendees were educated and entertained by Anne’s unique style as she taught attendees the latest marketing and closing techniques and ways to improve cash flow through general management practices. Feedback from this conference was excellent yet again. Members appreci-ated that the first member from each facility was free and non-members found the $75 registration rate to be an excellent value. The overwhelming

SSA has agreed to give PASSA in 2013 for legislative issues. We will be working on changes not only to the lien law, but also to allow facilities to sell tenant insurance. If you are inter-ested in volunteering to help with this effort, please let us know. You make the difference. If you would like to contact Alex to get more involved with these changes, send an email to [email protected]. As we continue to grow as an orga-nization, we look to our members to give us new ideas and to make sugges-tions and recommendations on how we can better assist them. Your ideas, suggestions and recommendations will go directly to the board of direc-tors for consideration. Thank you for your continued support.Contact: Kimberly Cossar, (717) 4 41 - 6 04 4 , k i m b e r l y co s s a r @wannerassoc.com
