JUNIOR DRAKE HOUDASHELT NAMED MAC W.O.W FOR 2ND TIMEJunior Drake Houdashelt protected his spot atop the rankings at 149 pounds with two top-10 victories, claiming Mid-American Conference honors on the way.

The MAC announced in the afternoon of Feb. 5 that Houdashelt was named the Conference’s Wrestler of the Week following wins over No. 2 Kendric Maple (Oklahoma) and No. 7 Josh Kindig (Oklahoma State). This marks the second time that Houdashelt has claimed MAC-honors this season (Dec. 19) and the third of his career.

Houdashelt topped Maple Thursday night in Norman, Okla., to help power the Tigers to an 18-15 upset over the No. 6-Sooners. He then picked up his third win of the season over Kindig the following night by way of a 4-0 decision. His 27 wins are tied for the lead among Tiger grapplers this year, with a team-leading 17 coming in bonus point territory.

Freshman J’den Cox was also a MAC W.O.W. nominee this week after his impressive 6-1 decision over No. 3 Travis Rutt of Oklahoma.

SMITH CLOSES IN ON 200TH WIN AT MIZZOUIn his 16th year at the helm of the Missouri Wrestling program, Head Coach Brian Smith finds himself five wins away from his 200th career win as the Tigers head coach. During his tenure, Smith has coached three wrestlers to four NCAA Championships, and has witnessed 31 All-Americans come through his program. After posting a 16-3 dual record in 2012-13, Smith had led Mizzou to its 12th-consecutive winning season.

Smith is only three wins away from his 200th career victory as a head coach, with two of his career wins coming in the 1997-98 season when he was coaching at Syracuse.

TENTH-RANKED TIGERS CAN’T SOLVE NO. 6 COWBOYSJust a day removed from an 18-15 victory over No. 6 Oklahoma, the No. 10 Tigers fell short to the ninth-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys, 28-6. Junior Drake Houdashelt and freshman standout J’den Cox picked up the Tiger wins at Gallagher-IBA Arena Friday night, both over ranked opponents.

Down 10 points after the first three weights, Houdashelt put the Tigers on the board with a 4-0 decision over No. 7 Josh Kindig. Houdashelt’s victory was his third over Kindig this season, with the previous coming by way of a 10-2 major decision at the Joe Parisi Open, followed by a 5-3 decision in the semis at the Southern Scuffle. His 27 victories on the season now ties him for the team high. The O’Fallon, Mo.-native, ranked No. 1 in the nation at 149 pounds, defeated No. 2 Kendric Maple of Oklahoma on Thursday to hold on to the top spot.

No. 5-Cox picked up his 16th win in his last 17 bouts with a 9-3 decision over Nolan Boyd, who replaced OSU’s No. 10 Blake Rosholt in the starting lineup. Cox climbed out to an early 5-0 lead with a takedown and three backpoints in the first period, and added a third period takedown to seal the decision. Boyd ranks No. 19 by Intermat at 184 pounds.

NO. 10-TIGERS KNOCK OFF NO. 6-SOONERS, 18-15After a full 10 matches, the tenth-ranked Tigers will leave Norman, Okla., on Thursday night with a 18-15 win over the No. 6 Sooners under their belt. Fueled by top-10 victories from Drake Houdashelt and J’den Cox, and sealed by a Devin Mellon decision over No. 16 Ross Larson at heavyweight, Brian Smith’s squad improved to 6-1 on the season. The win was the program’s 11th over the Sooners all-time.

Down 15-12 with only two bouts remaining, true freshman J’den Cox and junior heavyweight Devin Mellon found a way to put the Tigers back on top. Cox, ranked fifth at 197 pounds, further engraved his name among the nation’s elite by way of a 6-1 decision over the nation’s third-ranked Travis Rutt. Cox’s win was his fifth over wrestlers ranked higher than him this season at 197 pounds. The decision knotted the dual up at 15-a-piece, with the deciding bout up next at heavyweight.

The Tigers needed a Devin Mellon victory, and he answered the call, winning by decision 6-0 over No. 16 Ross Larson. Mellon scored first, which proved to be all that he would need over the Sooner’s heavyweight. Mellon led 2-0 after the first three minutes, scoring a takedown on a Larson mistake. He would add an escape and another takedown in the second, and would win by decision 6-0 with 3:07 of riding time.

Mizzou won six of 10 matches Thursday evening, all by decision. Among those victors were Lavion Mayes and Drake Houdashelt, as both disposed of their ranked counterpart. At 141 pounds, Mayes won his first collegiate bout over a former All-American, topping Oklahoma’s No. 15 Nick Lester 6-4. Lester gained All-American status in 2012. The No. 1-Houdashelt followed suit, squeaking past No. 2 Kendric Maple with a 3-2 decision at 149 pounds. Mizzou’s junior captain improves to 26-1 on the season, and now has wins against Maple and Minnesota’s Nick Dardanes, who both have held the top-spot at 149 pounds this season.

The Tigers also received decisions from true freshman Barlow McGhee, a 3-1 win over Sean Williams, and junior Mikey England, who topped Derek Geiges, 6-1.

TIGER STYLE SHUTS OUT NIU, 31-0A young Mizzou Wrestling program was forced to quickly forget about their first dual loss of the season Friday night, and did so by way of a 31-0 shutout victory versus MAC-foe Northern Illinois on Saturday afternoon. All 10 Tigers to touch the mat emerged victorious, including a major decision victory by sophomore Cody Johnston in his first career start.

Missouri Head Coach Brian Smith gave Johnston the nod at 184 pounds Saturday afternoon, and the Tiger sophomore didn’t

MISSOURIWRESTLING-4

disappoint. Johnston was a scoring machine early on, tallying three takedowns and two nearfalls en route to a 13-3 major decision over Caleb Busson, the only bonus point victory on the day. It was his first major decision of the season, and his 11th win in bonus point territory. Johnston was the 18th grappler to make a dual start for the Tigers in six dual meets.

With five freshmen in Mizzou’s starting lineup, many young Tigers are starting to grow up quickly, especially after the adversity they faced Friday night in Northern Iowa. Freshman Joey Lavallee went 2-0 on the road trip thanks in large part to a takedown with 11 seconds remaining at 157 pounds. Northern Illinois’ Andrew Morse led 3-2 with riding time locked up, and Lavallee found a way to wrap him up with just seconds left. The bout went to overtime, where Lavallee only needed 10 more seconds for a takedown in sudden victory.

Heavyweight Devin Mellon closed out Saturday’s matinee dual with a 2-1 overtime victory in what was a big matchup with possible implications for the MAC Conference Championships in March. Mellon and NIU’s Jared Torrence traded escapes in the first seven minutes to send the bout to overtime tied at one-a-piece. Mellon and Torrence would go to a tiebreaker, where Mellon would escape and then proceed to keep Torrence from getting his own escape for the win. Mellon, tabbed No. 2 at heavyweight in the conference, backed up his ranking by topping Torrence, ranked No. 3 in the MAC.

NO. 7-TIGERS DROP TOP-10 TEST TO NO.7-UNI, 24-10For the first time in 2013-14, the No. 7 Mizzou Wrestling program fell short in dual play at the hands of Northern Iowa, 24-10. The Tigers won three bouts on the night, highlighted by the first career dual win at 157 pounds for Joey Lavallee.

Mizzou had a chance to cut an early 6-0 deficit in half at 141 pounds in a matchup between sophomore Trevor Jauch and UNI’s No. 19 Joey Lazor. Jauch started the second period in the down position, where he would escape and get a takedown on his ranked counterpart for a 3-0 lead. Lazor would answer in the third, however, with a quick reversal, closing the gap to 3-2. With less than 20 seconds remaining, Jauch was hit with his second stalling call, and as time expired Lazor wrapped him up for two more, and the match. Lazor’s 5-4 decision increased UNI’s lead to 9-0, a gap that the Tigers could never overcome.

Junior Drake Houdashelt, tabbed the top 149-pounder in the land, put Mizzou on the board with a 12-4 major decision over Tyler Patten, thanks to three third period takedowns. Lavallee followed suit at 157, with his first collegiate dual win. The Tiger true freshman was a hammer on top, accumulating 3:51 of riding time in a 4-1 win over Jarrett Jensen to close UNI’s lead to 9-7.

The Tigers only other victory came at 197, an 8-1 decision for J’den Cox at the hands of UNI’s Basil Minto.

Upsets at 165 and 174 pounds put the Tigers in a hole that they couldn’t climb out of. Senior Zach Toal, ranked 8th by USA Today/AWN, fell to No. 10 Cooper Moore, 6-2. Then at 174, UNI’s Cody Caldwell turned No. 18 Mikey England for backpoints in the third en route to a 10-7 win. Missouri lost three matches that were tied or they held the lead headed into the third period on Friday night.

LAVALLEE IS THIRD TRUE FRESHMAN TO GET DUAL STARTHead Coach Brian Smith opted to remove the redshirt off of freshman Joey Lavallee, who got his first collegiate start at 157 pounds for the Tigers. Lavallee wrestled No. 20 Luke Smith of Central Michigan tough, giving up only an escape to Smith in the second. Smith added two backpoints with two seconds remaining in the third, and won by decision, 4-0.

Lavallee is the third true freshman to make his way into the starting lineup this season, following fellow teammates J’den Cox and Barlow McGhee. Lavallee hails from Reno, Nev., where he was a four-time state champion in Nevada.

COX’S MAJOR DECISION HELPS TIGERS EDGE CENTRAL MICHIGANThe No. 7 Missouri Tigers slid past conference-rival Central Michigan 16-15 on Sunday (Jan. 19), thanks in large part to a bonus point victory from true freshman J’den Cox. Cox and the Tigers took an early 10-0 lead and never surrendered it to the Chippewas, who found a way to climb back to within a point twice. Both squads won five matches a piece on the afternoon.

Cox (22-2) put up nine quick points versus Jackson Lewis at 197 pounds, thanks to a flurry of backpoints in the first moments of the bout. He added a second-period escape and a point for riding time, taking the match 11-0. Cox’s win was his sixth major decision of the season, and his 12th in bonus points. Mizzou improves to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in MAC play as they avenge a 17-16 loss to the Chippewas from last year.

TIGERS SHUTOUT SIUE TO EXTEND 15-YEAR WINNING STREAKThe seventh-ranked Mizzou Tigers (3-0) extended their winning streak to 13 dual wins over a 15-year period with a 40-0 victory over the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars (3-9) Saturday night (Jan. 11). Redshirt freshmen Blake Pepper and Matthew Lemanowicz both won their collegiate debuts, posting back-to-back pins at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively.

Pepper met up with SIUE’s Karsten Van Velsor, who he defeated in the finals at the Joe Parisi Open earlier this season, 9-7. The two traded a flurry of points throughout the first period, as Pepper took Van Velsor down first before being reversed eight seconds later. Pepper regained the lead quickly though with a reversal of his own, and added a takedown halfway through the frame to take a 6-3 advantage after three minutes. The Mizzou redshirt freshman started on bottom in the second, and escaped before scoring another two-point takedown. Pepper held Van Velsor down, and finally turned him onto his back for a pin at 4:02.

Immediately after at 157 pounds, redshirt freshman Matthew Lemanowicz followed suit with a pin of his own in what was his dual collegiate debut as well. Lemanowicz carried a 4-1 lead into the third period over Logun Taylor before reversing and adding two

more on a takedown versus his SIUE counterpart. With under a minute to go, Lemanowicz rolled Taylor into danger, and at the 6:10 mark, the official smacked the mat and awarded the fall. The two pins increased the Tigers lead to 22-0 before a quick intermission.

True freshman J’den Cox also added a pin at 197 pounds with a cradle over Chris Johnson with less than 30 seconds to go in the first period.

Saturday’s victory is the Tigers’ third shutout in the past two seasons, as the Tigers blanked Old Dominion and Baker in 2012-13. The win also increases Mizzou’s all-time record versus SIUE to 21-4, and marks the 13th straight victory over the Cougars over a 15-year span. The two squads have faced off the past four seasons, with the Tigers outscoring SIUE, 173-3.

HOUDASHELT, COX LEAD TIGERS TO FIFTH PLACE AT SCUFFLEThe seventh-ranked Mizzou Wrestling team took fifth place with 102.5 team points in a very competitive field that included three of the nation’s top five teams at the Southern Scuffle on Thursday (Jan. 2). Seven Tigers placed in the top-8 of their respective brackets, including junior Drake Houdashelt and true freshman J’den Cox. Houdashelt pinned the nation’s top-ranked 149-pounder Nick Dardanes from Minnesota to win in the finals. Cox solidified his status as one of the nation’s elite by defeating Penn State’s No. 3 Morgan McIntosh twice Thursday en route to a third place finish.

Houdashelt’s bout with Dardanes is a possible matchup later in March at the NCAA Championships as Houdashelt, the nation’s No. 2 149-pounder, pinned Dardanes in 2:52 Thursday evening. Houdashelt had great mat awareness as he locked up a cradle on the edge, barely keeping his toes in bounds. Houdashelt reserved his spot in the championship bout with a 5-3 decision over Josh Kindig of Oklahoma State, his second victory over Kindig this season. The Tiger junior is now a team-best 22-1 on the season.

At 197 pounds, Cox defeated Penn State’s Morgan McIntosh with an 8-2 decision in the third place match, scoring on a takedown, reversal, and a three-point nearfall after putting McIntosh in a cradle. His third place win was the second defeat over No. 3 McIntosh on the day, as Cox and McIntosh met in the quarterfinals with Cox winning 2-0. Mizzou’s true freshman was a takedown away from having his own birth in the championship round, dropping his semifinal match in sudden victory to No. 2 Kyven Gadson of Iowa State.

Along with Houdashelt and Cox, five Tigers placed at the event. Zach Synon (6th), Matt Manley (8th), Kyle Bradley (8th), Zach Toal (4th), and Mikey England (8th) all placed in the top-8 in their respective brackets.

HOUDASHELT CLAIMS FIRST CONFERENCE ACCOLADEMissouri junior Drake Houdashelt rolled through his bracket en route to his third open title of the year at the Northern Iowa Open in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Houdashelt won all five bouts on the day in bonus point land (2 TFs, 1 pin, 2 MDs), outscoring his counterparts 88-19 on the afternoon. Houdashelt responded well after his first loss of the season to Tywan Claxton of Ohio earlier this month. He ranks No. 3 in the nation at 149 pounds, a weight class that has been a game of musical chairs in the top-5 so far this year. He heads to the Southern Scuffle in early January boasting a 16-1 record, with 14 of those wins coming with bonus points.

SIX CHAMPS CROWNED AT UNI OPENThe eighth-ranked Missouri Tigers wrestling program continues to crown champions this season, placing first in six of 10 weight classes at the UNI Open Saturday in Cedar Falls, Iowa. In the final event of the 2013 calendar year, 10 Tigers advanced to the finals, and a total of 19 grapplers finished in the top-5 of their respective brackets. Mizzou has had six champions one other time this season, in early November at the Daktronics Open on South Dakota State’s campus.

Among the champions were Eric Wilson (133), Trevor Jauch (141), Drake Houdashelt (149), Kyle Bradley (157), Zach Toal (165) and J’den Cox (197). In addition, nine Tigers placed third, fourth or fifth.

MIZZOU, ST. LOUIS SPORTS COMMISSION TO HOST NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 2015, 2017The NCAA announced December 11, 2013, that it has awarded the City of St. Louis with two more NCAA Wrestling Championships. Missouri will partner with the St. Louis Sports Commission to host the 2015 and 2017 NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Scottrade Center in downtown St. Louis.

The Scottrade Center has already played host to six NCAA Wrestling Championships since the turn of the century, housing the event in 2000, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2012. In 2012, St. Louis set the NCAA Wrestling Championships record in attendance with 109,450 patrons attending during the three-day tournament. In fact, St. Louis owns four of the top-5 attendance numbers in NCAA Wrestling Championship history. The committee chose St. Louis because of the city’s proven ability to host the tournament and the site’s popularity among coaches and student-athletes.

“To me, it is like Christmas came early,” said Missouri Head Coach Brian Smith. “Getting to co-host our 7th and 8th NCAA’s in the best facility and city - St. Louis - it’s outstanding. College wrestling fans love the event in St. Louis and the NCAA has most certainly listened.

The University of Missouri hosted the past six wrestling championships in St. Louis and will once again assist the St. Louis Sports Commission in overseeing the organizing committee. The tournaments will be held March 19-21, 2015, and March 16-18, 2017.

“I know Chris Roseman and his people at the St. Louis Sports Commission go above and beyond to make this event something special, not only for the fans but for the student-athlete,” said Smith. “Their work in the recent years has made St. Louis the City for

NO. 9 MIZZOU DROPS JESSE HALL CURTAIN ON OHIOThe 9th-ranked Missouri wrestling program defeated the Ohio Bobcats 23-10 in Jesse Hall Auditorium Friday night in a catfight for supremacy in the newly renovated Mid-American Conference. The Tigers improved to 2-0 on the young season while serving the Bobcats (3-1) their first dual loss. It was the Tiger freshmen that led the ninth-ranked Tigers to victory Friday, with consecutive wins from youngsters Barlow McGhee, Matt Manley and Lavion Mayes.

With the squad trailing 7-4, McGhee and company would regain the lead with three straight victories, highlighted by a Mayes 12-3 major decision in his first career dual start.

The suprise of the night came at 149 pounds, where No. 18 Tywan Claxton topped No. 1 Drake Houdashelt by decision, 5-3. The loss was Houdashelt’s first of the year, and came just a week after claiming the nation’s top-spot at 149 pounds.

This particular wrestling dual marked the first athletic event inside the University’s historic Jesse Hall. Nearly 800 Mizzou patrons attended the dual. This year’s Clash of the Cats at Jesse served as a trial run for what could become an annual Mizzou Wrestling tradition.

TRIO OF TIGERS WIN TITLES AT JOE PARISI OPENThe Mizzou wrestling program wrapped up a successful weekend at the Joe Parisi Open, hosted by Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo. In all, three Tiger grapplers claimed individual titles at their respective weight classes, highlighted by freshman J’den Cox’s second collegiate tournament win is as many tries at 197 pounds. Also, junior Drake Houdashelt claimed the title at 149 pounds and redshirt freshman Lavion Mayes was crowned champion at 141 pounds.

Cox, a hometown kid who attended Hickman High School last year, was seeded second in his bracket and earned pair of falls and a technical fall on his way to the championship bout. He faced off against Oklahoma State’s Blake Rosholt, the seventh-ranked wrestler in the weight class by Intermat. Cox controlled the bout throughout and pulled away with a 7-3 decision.

Houdashelt was seeded first in his bracket at 149 pounds and earned a pair of falls and a major decision on his way to the finals where he defeated Joshua Kindig of Oklahoma State in a 10-2 major decision. Mayes was sensational as well at 141 pounds, earning three straight decisions to reach the semifinals in the bracket. He then pinned Iowa’s Ethan Owens to advance to the finals and pinned Anthony Collica of Oklahoma State in the finals.

MIZZOU SIGNS FOUR TO 2014-15 CLASSA year after signing the nation’s No. 2-ranked recruiting class, the Tigers announced on Nov. 19th that four more student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to wrestle for the University of Missouri. The four athletes joining the Tigers program for the 2014-15 season are Sam Crane (Columbia, Mo.), John Erneste (Kansas City, Mo.), Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.) and Jacob Semple (Waynesville, Mo). The four athletes bring with them many high school accolades, including four state championships.

Crane joins the Tigers from Rock Bridge High School, right down the road from Mizzou’s campus. He brings with him one Missouri state title while being a finalist in all three years. He hopes to be a four-time finalist this season in his senior campaign.

Erneste hails from Park Hill in Kansas City, Mo., which has already produced some of Missouri’s top-talent in Alan Waters and Johnny Eblen. He is not only a student on the mat, but off the mat as well, and is sure to contribute to the program in many ways.

Lewis is arguably the most decorated wrestler that the Tigers will add next season, bringing in three state titles with a possible fourth in the near future. Ranked inside the top-35 among incoming freshman, Lewis boasts a career high school record of 136-4 in just three seasons.

Semple was a three-sport athlete for Waynesville High School, and will compete at heavyweight in his years at Mizzou. He’s ranked as the top senior-heavyweight in the state of Missouri.

SIX TIGERS TOP PODIUM AT SOUTH DAKOTA STATE OPEN The No.16-ranked Missouri Tigers placed 23 wrestlers out of 34 entrants at the 21st Annual Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open on Nov. 3.

Freshman J’den Cox (Columbia, Mo.) dominated throughout his five tournament matches to win the 197-pound championship. Cox earned three major decisions and technical fall on Sunday and tallied 61 points in the bracket overall. Cox took down Northern Illinois wrestler Shawn Scott 14-4 in the championship bout.

Matt Manley (Perry, Okla.) became the second freshman to win when he captured the 133-pound championship. In six matches throughout the day, Manley held his opponents to a total of one point, including a pin over SMSU’s Justin Stevens. Manley defeated Northern Illinois’ Jordan Northrup for the tournament championship 3-0.

Three other Tiger wrestlers were finalists in their weight classes. Aside from Gagliano, heavyweight Devin Mellon and 174-pounder Mike England took second place.

TIGERS TRUMP BISON IN SEASON OPENER, 23-9The 16th-ranked Missouri Tigers took to the mat for the first time in 2013-14, taking the season opener 23-9 at the hands of the North Dakota State Bison. Mizzou won seven of the first eight bouts at Bison Sports Arena in Fargo, N.D., including two by major decision.

In a suprise move, Head Coach Brian Smith opted to leave the redshirts off of true freshmen J’den Cox and Barlow McGhee in 2013-14, dressing both for the Tigers season debut. Cox dominated in his collegiate debut at 197-pounds, tabbing six takedowns against North Dakota’s Colt Castlebury en route to a 14-4 victory by major decision. McGhee also won his first dual match, a 5-2 decision over 125-pounder Hunter Weber after two first period takedowns and an escape in the third period.

MISSOURIWRESTLING-9

BRIAN SMITHHead Coach | 16th Season

Beginning his career as Missouri’s seventh Head Wrestling Coach, Brian Smith sat down with his team and made a list of goals that he hoped to help the 1998 squad and future Tiger teams accomplish. Over the past 15 years, the Missouri program has slowly but surely checked items off the list. Individual Big 12 Conference Champions, improved grade-point averages, record-setting attendances, a No. 1 national ranking and Missouri’s first-ever NCAA National Champion in wrestling were all on Smith’s “to-do” list. His unique Tiger Style training program has molded today’s team into a national powerhouse that looks to contend for the program’s first NCAA title in the near future.

Since being introduced as Missouri’s Head Wrestling Coach May 5, 1998, Smith has demanded nothing but the best from himself, his coaches and his wrestlers. Owning 12 consecutive seasons with a dual record at or above .500, beginning with 2001-02, Smith has coached 18 All-Americans to 31 top-eight performances and three Tigers to four national titles. Additionally, Smith aided in two-time National Champion Ben Askren’s run through the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. During Askren’s Tiger career, Smith guided the 174-pound grappler Askren to the program’s first back-to-back National Championship titles (2006 and 2007). On March 21, 2009, Mark Ellis became the second Missouri wrestler in program history to collect top honors. Wrestling at heavyweight, Ellis bested his opponent, 3-2, in overtime with Smith coaching from the corner. In March 2010, Max Askren became the third national champion in the history of the program at 184 pounds.

Smith’s teams have made a remarkable turnaround. Inheriting a program that had not seen a winning record since the 1991-92 campaign, the Tigers are now continuously ranked among the top-10 in the nation, reaching as high as No. 1 during the course of the 2006-07 campaign. On Dec. 12, 2006, the Missouri wrestling team became just the 11th wrestling program in history to earn a No. 1 ranking.

In 2012, the program reached several feats that had never been touched in the 66 years of Missouri wrestling. First, the team won the program’s first conference championship ever, placing first at the 2012 Big 12 Championships with 77.0 points in front of their hometown fans at the Hearnes Center. They sent eight of their 10 wrestlers to the championship bout and crowned four individual champions while qualifying nine grapplers for the NCAA Championship. For their success at the Big 12 Championship, Smith was named Big 12 Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. A few days later, the Tigers learned their 10th wrestler, redshirt freshman heavyweight Devin Mellon, earned a wild card bid to the NCAA Championship, marking the first time in program history that Mizzou had qualified all 10 of their starters. Additionally, it was announced that the Tigers were the only team in the country to qualify every starter for NCAA’s in 2012.

And in 2013, after the University departed from the Big 12 Conference, Smith would do it all again. He led the Tigers into the Mid American Conference as an affiliate member, and took the Conference crown by storm, ending an 11-year reign by the Chippewas from Central Michigan. His squad posted a total of 136.0 team points, which shattered the MAC Championship record for team points. And again, all 10 of his wrestlers qualified for the NCAAs. He was named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year for his accomplishments.

At least one Tiger grappler has been selected to compete at the NCAA Championship event in each of Smith’s 15 seasons at Missouri and his squads have finished among the top-20 programs at the NCAA Championships in 11 of the last 12 years. In 2009, Missouri set the bar higher with a program-high five Tigers earning All-American accolades, the previous high, three, had been set on four occasions. In 2013, Missouri tied that program high with five placers at the Championships in Des Moines.

The winningest coach in program history, Smith has compiled a 189-88-3 record at Missouri and became only the second Tiger wrestling coach to reach the 100-win plateau. In May of 2007, Smith’s hard work paid off as he earned the Dan Gable Coach of the Year Award as presented by W.I.N. Magazine.

The demands that Smith puts on his wrestlers extend well beyond the mat. In 2010, Smith had eight wrestlers with GPA’s over 3.0. In all, over 25 wrestlers have been recognized by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), Big 12 and CoSIDA for their academic achievements since he took the reins in 1998.

Smith’s collegiate coaching career began at Cornell University in 1992. While an assistant at Cornell, he put together two of the nation’s top-10 recruiting classes, a feat he accomplished without athletic scholarships, (Ivy League schools do not offer athletic scholarships).

A competitor himself, Smith was a three-time All-Big Ten wrestler and a four-time letterman at Michigan State from 1986-1990. As a senior, he was selected as the Spartan’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Competing at 126-pounds, Smith finished fifth at the Big Ten Championships in 1988, third in 1989 and second in 1990. Smith stands among the top-25 on Michigan State’s all-time wins list with 84 career victories as a Spartan. He also stands tied for 19th on MSU’s single-season wins list with 32 victories in 1990.

The Florida native graduated from Michigan State with a degree in education and married the former Denise Dean in 1993. Brian and Denise, have three children, Quinn, Kylie and Braden. In the spring of 2009, Smith received his Master’s Degree in Athletic Administration from William Woods University.
