Men’s Cross Country The Providence College men’s cross country team enters the 2013 season with a young, yet ex-perienced collection of athletes. The Friars return four of their top seven runners from the 2012 sea-son, including junior standout Shane Quinn (Water-ford, Ireland). Quinn led the Friars during the 2012 season, and will do so once more in the upcoming campaign. In his sophomore year, Quinn placed second at the BIG EAST Cross Country Champion-ships. He then followed that with another outstand-ing performance, earning a third place fi nish at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships. Quinn closed the season by fi nishing tied for 69th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Louisville, Ky. Quinn enters the season fresh off a strong out-door track season, where he ran a personal best 13:48.90 in the 5,000 meters. He also competed in the 5,000 meters at the fi rst round of the NCAA Championships, where he placed seventh in his heat. The rest of the team won’t be far behind Quinn, as returners Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England), Benjamin Connor (Derby, England), and Liam Hillery (Smithfi eld, R.I.) are poised for standout seasons of their own. As a freshman, Dixon placed 16th at the NCAA Northeast Regional, a result that mirrors the freshman performances of other former Friar greats. Juniors Connor and Hillery bring experience and strength to the squad. Connor embarks on the cross country season with two superb years under his belt. Since joining the team in 2011, Connor has been a consistent scoring member of the team. Hillery enters the season off an impressive sophomore indoor track campaign. He ran 8:15.41 in the 3,000 meters at the BIG EAST Indoor Track Championships and 14:28.37 in the 5,000 meters at the New England Indoor Championships. Rounding out the Friar squad is a slew of young talent. Sophomore Christian Costello (Ridgewood, N.J.) was strong for the Friars in his freshman season, fi nishing 46th at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships. Costello consistent-ly cracked the top seven, and will be looking to do so once again. Redshirt freshmen Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) and Stephen Robertson (Wakefi eld, Mass.) also will be aiming to contribute to the team’s pursuit of victories. Oakley enters his fi rst cross country season as a Friar, and is already accustomed to BIG EAST success. Oakley took sec-ond place in the one mile run at the 2013 BIG EAST Indoor Track Championships, and will be looking to transfer that success over to the cross country season. Costello, Oakley, and Robertson will be important contributors to the team’s accomplishments. Also looking to make their mark are incoming fresh-men Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.), Billy Bragg (Middle-town, N.J.), Jake Feinstein (Sandy Hook, Conn.) and Hugh Armstrong (Balina, County Mayo, Ireland). Crawley was the 2012 Rhode Island State Champion in cross country and was a Footlocker Cross Country Championships fi nalist. Bragg led his team to a fourth-place fi nish at the 2012 Nike Cross Nationals, where he placed 24th. Jake Feinstein placed sec-ond at the 2012 CIAC Open Championships and fourth in the 2012 New England XC Championships. Armstrong also has experience at the national level, as he placed second at the Irish School’s Cross Country Championships. As with every season, the Friar men will be seeking a title at the BIG EAST Championships and qualifi cation for the NCAA Cross Country Championships. With such a promising young squad, Providence College is ready for a winning sea-son.

Men’s TrackThe Providence College men’s track and fi eld team returns for the 2013-2014 indoor and outdoor track seasons

with their sights set once again on success. The team consists of talented and experienced athletes that are ready to impress on the oval. The Friar men will aim to qualify as many athletes as possible for the BIG EAST Championships and the NCAA Championships. Junior Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) leads the Friar men from the front. Quinn looks to continue the fantastic form he showed during his sophomore season. Quinn epitomized success in both the 2013 indoor and outdoor track seasons. He captured his fi rst individual BIG EAST title, winning the 5,000 meters at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships. He continued his stellar performances in the outdoor season, running one of the top 5,000 meter times in the country (13:48.90) at the Mt. Sac Relays. He then placed second in the 5,000 meters at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. Quinn qualifi ed in the 5,000 meters for the fi rst round of the NCAA Championships, where he placed seventh in his heat. Quinn continued his high performances on the national stage. He placed fourth in the 10,000 meters at the European U23 Championships in Tampere, Finland in a time of 29:49.43. Quinn has high ambitions for 2014, and will once again pursue championship titles in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Sophomore Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) is also ready for the 2014 campaign. As a freshman, Oakley made an immediate impact for the Friars. He also earned honors at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships. He placed second in the one mile run in a time of 4:09.5. He went on to set a personal best in the one mile run at the Columbia Final Chance Meet, running 4:06.01. In the outdoor season, Oakley qualifi ed for BIG EAST Outdoor championships in the 1,500 meters, where he ran 4:00.81 in the preliminary heats. He went on to set a personal best in the 1,500 meters, running 3:48.13, narrowly missing out on qualifying for the fi rst round of the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England) will look to continue to improve in 2014, building on his freshman year. On the indoor track, Dixon ran a personal best 4:05.68 in the one mile run at the Columbia Final Chance Meet. He competed in the 3,000 meters and was also a member of the distance medley relay team that placed third at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships. Dixon continued his fi ne form in the outdoor season. He ran 3:47.18 in the 1,500 meters at the Colonial Relays, qualifying for the fi rst round of the NCAA Championships. Dixon will spend the indoor season competing in the one mile run and the 3,000 meters and will spend the outdoor season competing in the 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters. Also poised to compete at high levels are juniors Liam Hillery (Smithfi eld, R.I.) and Benjamin Connor (Derby, En-gland). Hillery impressed in the 2013 indoor season, running a personal best time of 8:15.41 in the 3,000 meters at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships, placing 12th. He then ran a personal best time of 14:28.37 in the 5,000 meters at the New England Indoor Championships, placing third. Connor will transfer strength from three impressive cross country seasons for the Friars into his fi rst seasons of indoor and outdoor track. Both Hillery and Connor will be competing in the 3,000 meters, 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters. Each intend on scoring at the BIG EAST Championships and qualifying for the NCAA East Preliminary Round. The Friar men will once again seek a BIG EAST victory in the distance medley relay. Quinn, sophomore Joe Vercol-lone (Pembroke, Mass.) and senior Nik Andrews (Clarksburg, Mass.) will join Dixon as members of the distance medley relay team. Vercollone competed in the distance medley relay at the 2013 BIG EAST Indoor championships, where the team placed third. Andrews and Quinn were both members of the distance medley relay team that won the title at the 2012 BIG EAST Indoor Championships. Senior Pat Bowler (Westwood, Mass.) will lead the team in fi eld events. In the 2013 season, Bowler threw 56.50 meters in the javelin at the BIG EAST Outdoor Champi-onships, placing eighth and scoring his fi rst BIG EAST points for the Friars. Junior Luke Perron (West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomores Christian Costello (Ridgewood, N.J.), Ste-phen Robertson (Wakefi eld, Mass.) and Brendan Sullivan (Foxboro, Mass.) have their sights set on BIG EAST Qual-ifi cation. They are joined by newcomers Kevin Cooper (Waterford, Ireland), Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.) and Jake Feinstein (Sandy Hook, Conn.). CCOOAACCHHEESS

One of the nation’s most successful coaches, Ray Treacy embarks on his 30th season as Director of Cross Country and Track Operations at Providence College. In his 29 years at Providence, Treacy has coached 59 All-Americans, who have received 159 All-America accolades, 13 NCAA individual champions in cross coun-try and track, 43 BIG EAST individual champions, who have captured 109 BIG EAST titles, and 11 Olympians. In addition, his teams have captured one NCAA Cross Country Championship, 12 NCAA Northeast Regional Cross Country Championships, 20 BIG EAST Cross Country titles and 20 New England Championships. Treacy’s road to success began when he was a student-athlete at Providence College. The brother of 1984 Olympic silver medalist, John Treacy ‘78, Ray’s collegiate list of accomplishments and accolades is lengthy. He was the Friar team captain during his junior and senior seasons and collected All-America honors on three occasions. He was a two-time, New England cross country champion and won the indoor 5,000 me-ters at the BIG EAST Championships three times. The talented distance runner was also the IC4A Champion in the 10,000 and 5,000 meters during the 1981 and 1982 seasons, respectively. A 1982 graduate of the College, Treacy is very committed to the success of PC’s cross country and track programs. Since he took over as head coach in 1984, Treacy’s knowledge of conditioning and training has moved the Friars’ cross country and track programs into national prominence. Both the men’s and women’s cross country programs have advanced to their sports highest stage in 16 of the last 18 seasons, while the women’s team has landed a record 23 out of 24 seasons. Highlights among those 23 women’s cross country seasons include the 1990, 1995, 2003, 2004 and 2012 women’s cross country squads. These fi ve teams all fi nished among the top three teams in the country at their respective years’ NCAA Cross Country Championship. The 1990 cross country team placed second with three runners in the top 20 earning All-America honors. Along with the team’s 1995 NCAA title, the 1990 squad’s second-place fi nish is one of the top accomplishments of the program along with the 2012 team’s second-place fi nish. The 1995 team captured the programs fi rst NCAA title. On the road to this title, the team won their fi rst BIG EAST and ECAC Championships. In recognition of his eff orts, Treacy was named NCAA Division I Women’s National Coach of the Year, BIG EAST Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year, Rhode Island Words Unlimited Women’s Coach of the Year and NCAA District I Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. The women’s cross country team also placed third in consecutive years at the NCAA Championship, 2003 and 2004. In 2003, Kim Smith ‘05 and Mary Cullen ’06 led the way. Kim Smith fi nished second overall, while Cullen took fi fth-place to earn All-America honors. Providence was the only team to have two runners fi nish in the top fi ve. The ‘95 women’s team also won its third Northeast Regional title, for which Treacy was named Northeast Regional Coach of the Year for the seventh time since 1990. In 2004, the women’s cross country team placed third at the NCAA Championships for the second con-secutive season and captured its fourth BIG EAST title. Again, the team was paced by Kim Smith, who capped off her brilliant Providence College career by winning the NCAA Cross Country Championship. Treacy also guided both the men’s and women’s cross country teams to NCAA Northeast Regional titleS, for which he was again named regional Coach of the Year. The men’s cross country team made its 10th consecutive ap-pearance at the NCAAs and fi nished 21st. The men’s team also won its 24th New England crown.

COACHESS

In 2012, the women’s cross country team placed third at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships and went on to win the Northeast Regional title. At the NCAA Cross Country Championship, three Friars earned All-American honors, Sarah Collins ‘16, Emily Sisson ‘14 and Lau-ra Nagel ‘14, to help the team place second – the squad’s highest fi nish since 1995. On the men’s side, the cross country team was most successful in 1992 and 2000 where both teams placed third at their respective NCAA Cross Country Championship. Along with the 2000 men’s cross coun-try teams’ third place fi nish, Treacy coached Keith Kelly ‘00 to the fi rst ever NCAA cross country individual title won by a Friar. Over the course of his time at Providence, Kelly collected seven BIG EAST titles in cross country and track, and was a fi ve-time All-American. Other program highlights under Treacy include Andy Keith ’94 winning the NCAA Indoor Mile in 1992 and Mark Carroll ’95 capturing the 5,000 meter indoor title in 1995. Keith fi nished his career at Prov-idence with six All-America accolades and six BIG EAST titles. Carroll captured seven BIG EAST titles as a Friar and went on to compete at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. Success and Ray Treacy have been synonymous at Providence Col-lege. Besides his long lists of BIG EAST, ECAC, IC4A and New England Champions, Treacy was instrumental in putting together the 4x1,500 meter relay team that set the world record at the Penn Relays in 1991. For his achievements, he was named Rhode Island Words Unlimited Coach of the Year (1991). Other program highlights include the 2003-04 indoor season where Kim Smith continued her success from the cross country sea-son onto the track. She became the fi rst Providence female athlete to capture two NCAA titles in the same meet, winning the 3,000 and 5,000 meters in NCAA record time. Kim Smith’s time of 15:14.18 in the 5,000 meters shattered the previous NCAA record of 15:17.28, which was set in 1991. Her record still stands today. In the 3,000 meters, Kim Smith also set an NCAA record, fi nishing the race in 8:49.18 and eclipsing the old record of 8:53.54, which was set in 1983. Kim Smith helped the Friars to a ninth-place fi nish at the 2004 NCAAs, the team’s best performance since 1992 (when the Friars placed fourth). During the outdoor track season, Kim Smith won the 5,000 meters to claim her third NCAA individual title. In all, Smith set three NCAA records and four Providence College records under Treacy. The 2006 outdoor track season was another milestone for Treacy and the program. Running in her fi nal race, Cullen won the 5,000 meters at the NCAAs and became Treacy’s ninth individual NCAA champion. The meet was successful for the men’s team, which recorded its highest fi nish ever at the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships, placing 16th, which also was the best of any BIG EAST team. In more recent years, Danette Doetzel ‘09 won the BIG EAST title in the 10,000 meters at the 2009 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships, qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Doetzel concluded her illustrious career at Providence College by capturing the 10,000 meter title at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track Championships. Doetzel’s victory was the 10th NCAA individual title for the Providence College wom-en’s track and cross country program under Treacy. The tradition of excellence continued during the 2010 cross country campaign. Lee Carey ‘13 captured the men’s program’s 11th individual BIG EAST title. FRIARTOWN

THE FOUNDING OF PROVIDENCE COLLEGE

Providence College was founded in 1917 through a joint eff ort ofthe Diocese of Providence and the Dominican Friars of the Province of St. Joseph, with the bless-ing of Pope Benedict XV and the consent of the General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island.

The driving force behind the development of the College was the late Rt. Rev. Matthew Harkins, D. D., Bishop of Providence, whose dream it was to create a center of advanced learning primarily for the Catholic youth of Rhode Island. However, the College’s charter demonstrates that the founders intended PC to serve members of all religious faiths as it reads: “no person shall be refused admission . . . nor shall any person be denied any of the privileges, honors, or degrees in said college on account of the religious opinion he may entertain.”

Bishop Harkins’ negotiations with the Dominicans of the Province of St. Joseph and his gifts of approximately 17 acres of land and $10,000 in scholarship funds helped make Providence College a reality. With donations coming primarily from Catholics of modest means, and a pledge from the Province of St. Joseph to provide Dominican administrators and teachers, the College broke ground for the imposing Harkins Hall in 1917. Two years later, in September 1919, it opened its doors to 71 students and nine Dominican faculty members.

THE MISSION OF THE COLLEGE

Providence College is a primarily undergraduate, liberal arts, Catholic institution of higher educa-tion. Committed to fostering academic excellence through the sciences and humanities, the College provides a variety of opportunities for intellectual, social, moral and spiritual growth in a supportive environment.

The College actively cultivates intellectual, spiritual, ethical and aesthetic values within the context of the Judaeo-Christian heritage. These values are nurtured by the unique tradition of the Dominican Order which emphasizes quality teaching and scholarship.

Providence College recognizes the unity of the human family that proceeds from its one Creator. It therefore encourages the deepest respect for the essential dignity, freedom and equality of every person and welcomes qualifi ed women and men from all religious, racial and ethnic backgrounds. Providence College prepares its students to be responsible and productive citizens to serve in their own society and the greater world community.

Responding to the needs of Rhode Island, the Dominican Order of Preachers made a special commitment to the state in 1917 and founded Providence College — the only institution of higher learning in North America that is con-ducted by the Order. In 93 years, Providence College has steadily moved to a position of na-tional prominence, while maintaining a personal, community-like atmosphere that fosters growth and development among its student population.

Providence College’s rich heritage dates back to 1216, or the origins of the Dominican Order in Spain. Through the ages, the Dominican Friars became known as the “champions of the faith,” spreading the gospel message through the centuries into every corner of the globe. Today, Dominican Friars continue to spread the gospel in a wide range of remote areas of the world, to teach at every level of the United States educa-tional system.

With the Dominican tradition as its foundation, Providence College focuses on developing the entire person through its values-oriented educa-tion. The college seeks to complement a student’s knowledge with knowledge of his own values — values that will remain the foundation for sound judgement throughout a lifetime.

To that end, Providence College aims to relate its curriculum to the problems of contemporary society, off ering diverse programs of study that remain grounded in the liberal arts. Students may choose from some 60 concentrations ranging from computer science to labor relations to the-atre arts. In addition, qualifi ed students who wish to structure a program not specifi cally provided under the regular concentrations may develop their own program with the approval of the dean of the college.

As part of the core curriculum, all students take a two-year, team-taught course, Development of Western Civilization (DWC) which integrates the study of literature, philosophy, history and religious studies through the ages into a cohesive interdisciplinary unit.

Situated just on the fringe of downtown Prov-idence, the College’s location enables students to have easy access to the many social, cultural, educational and recreational amenities of urban life - the Providence Public Library; entertain-ment at the Providence Performing Arts Center; the Providence Place Mall, the Bank of America City Center, sporting events, entertainment and trade shows at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center and the Providence Convention Center and dozens of fi ne restaurants. With several other major educational institutions located in Providence, the city has become a hub of collegiate activity.

ATHLETIC ACADEMIC SERVICES

The Offi ce of Academic Services (OAS) provides specialized support to student-athletes in light of the unique time demands, responsibilities and rules governing participation in intercollegiate athletics. Services are provided in a safe, personal environment where academic growth is a priority, personal development and independence are enhanced and long-term success is nurtured by a staff which models these same commitments.

Student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in the classroom as well as on the fi eld or court, may be nominated for the BIG EAST Ac-ademic All-Star Team, the HOCKEY EAST Academic Honor Roll, NFHCA Division I Academic Team, or CoSIDA’s Academic All-American Program. The Providence College Athletic Department also honors student-ath-letes each semester who have achieved a 3.00 grade point average or higher.

The student-athlete support staff includes the following:

Jonathan Gomes, Assistant Director for Student-Athlete ServicesKaitlyn O’Malley, Assistant Director for Student-Athlete Services/Life Skills CoordinatorJesse Strout, Student-Athlete Support Services

UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

Providence College is primarily a coeducational four-year undergrad-uate college of liberal arts and sciences. Its main objective is the in-tellectual development of its students through the disciplines of the sciences and the humanities, equipping them to become productive and responsible citizens of a democratic society.

To be eligible for a degree, a student must accumulate 116 credit hours over an eight semester period with an overall quality grade point av-erage of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. In addition, a student must complete a minimum of 24 upper-division credits in the fi eld of their major with an overall 2.0 cumulative average unless otherwise stipulated. Included in the total credit hours are the following prerequisites for any degree: Development of Western Civilization (20); Social Sciences (6); Natural Science (6); Philosophy (6); Theology (6); Mathematics (3) and Fine Arts (3). The remaining credit hours are elective with at least nine coming from areas outside one’s major. In addition, all students establish En-glish (writing) Profi ciency by coursework or standards designated by the English Department.

The fi ve most popular concentrations for the Class of 2012 were Biolo-gy, Management, Marketing, Psychology and Finance. In all, the college off ers a total of 34 majors and 36 minors ranging from theatre arts to computer science.

Although this may seem overwhelming on paper, our staff goes to great lengths to monitor each student’s academic progress. The Athlet-ic Department’s Academic Advisor counsels all of the school’s athletes and assists them in any areas in which they are experiencing diffi culties. It is a system that the College is quite proud of and one which we have worked long and hard to establish.

Any student-athlete who feels the need for tutorial assistance can uti-lize the College’s tutorial center, as well as the athletic department’s ad-visors who can supply them with individuals capable of assisting them in their particular course of study.

Programs and workshops on select life skills (i.e., NCAA/CHAMPS Life Skills Program) are presented, covering the following fi ve compo-nent areas: academics, personal development, community service, athletics and career development. The OAS has collaborative rela-tionships with many units on campus to help provide these services.

Pre-Advisement/Registration

The staff assists student-athletes with planning and course registra-tion. In conjunction with the Offi ce of Academic Records, dates are determined for preregistration each semester.

Study Hall

Quiet, monitored study time is available, during daytime and eve-ning hours. Student-athletes are required and/or recommended to attend, on a sport-by-sport basis, by their respective head coach.

Travel Notifi cations

At the beginning of each semester, student-athletes are provided with letters for their instructors, notifying them of travel/competitive schedules.

Tutorial Services and The Writing Center

ROBERT G. DRISCOLL, JR.ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT /ATHLETICS DIRECTOR

Entering his 12th season as Providence Col-lege’s Associate Vice President & Athletics Direc-tor, Bob Driscoll has transformed and reinvig-orated Providence College’s athletics program. Having established a vision of student-athlete success in the classroom, in the community and in competing for championships, Driscoll main-tains focus on fostering one of the nation’s most respected programs. Recently, Driscoll helped position the Col-lege’s athletics program for success as a member of the reorganized BIG EAST Conference, where the Friars will compete against top-fl ight academ-ic and athletic institutions in a new era of rivalries built on a rich athletic traditions. With a long-term television contract with FOX Sports and its mar-

quee men’s basketball championship tournament at Madison Square Garden, the BIG EAST is poised for success. Additionally, Friar hockey will continue to compete in the Hock-ey East Association, one of the premier hockey conferences in the nation. Driscoll also has ushered in stability and success by hiring and mentoring highly re-spected coaches and staff , including men’s basketball Head Coach Ed Cooley, women’s basketball Head Coach Susan Robinson-Fruchtl and men’s hockey Head Coach Nate Lea-man. The department’s coaching patriarch, Ray Treacy, enters his 30th season at the helm of the perennially successful men’s and women’s cross country and track programs at Prov-idence College. Under Driscoll, the Friars have excelled in the classroom. In the NCAA reported Grad-uation Success Rate (GSR), Providence averages a 92-percent mark with an average GPA of 3.0 for all student-athletes. Following the 2012-13 competition year, four Providence College athletic programs received Public Recognition Awards as part of the NCAA Ac-ademic Progress Rate (APR) program. The Friars have had multiple teams honored in all eight years that the NCAA has given out the Public Recognition Awards. Epitomizing the drive for success in athletics and in the classroom, the 2012 women’s cross country team placed second at the NCAA Championships, boasted three All-Americans, earned a NCAA Public Recognition Award for the second-consecutive season, had three USTFCCCA All-Ac-ademic Team Selections and team captain Sam Roecker was named the BIG EAST Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Last season alone, Friar student-athletes combined for over 3,000 hours of community service and raised over $38,000 for charitable causes. The men’s hockey team combined with Team IMPACT and added youngster Kevin Rich, who is battling cancer, to their roster. They welcomed Kevin to all team activities throughout the year. Other teams were involved with Relay for Life, the Project GOAL and raising money in support of the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation to fund research to name a few. Additionally, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) sponsored a We “CAN” Do It can drive that involved the entire Providence College community. In Driscoll’s 11 seasons, the Friars have consistently competed for championships. Last season, eight Friar teams qualifi ed for conference tournaments, including women’s cross country fi nishing as the national runners-up and a second-consecutive Hockey East semifi nal appearance by the men’s hockey team. The men’s basketball team advanced to the second round of the BIG EAST Tournament and then went on to the quarterfi nals of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). Three additional teams made BIG EAST Tournament appearances in 2012-13 including the women’s tennis, fi eld hockey and softball teams. The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams sent 26 individual qualifi ers to the BIG EAST Championship. The men’s and women’s indoor/outdoor track teams combined for fi ve individual BIG EAST titles and fi ve runners combined for eight All-America honors. The Friars also have had success in the Learfi eld Sports Directors’ Cup standings. Most recently, Providence fi nished the 2012-13 year ranked 12th amongst Division I-AAA schools. Since Driscoll joined the Friars, Providence has fi nished in the top-12 for Division I-AAA nine times. One of the biggest impacts Driscoll has had on the Providence College Athletics Department and the College as a whole has been with facility development, construction and renova-tion. Since his arrival in 2001, Driscoll has transformed the College’s athletics facilities. In September of 2013 a state-of-the art, $18 million renovation and 30,000-square foot addition project to Schneider Arena was completed. The project included new locker rooms, new coaches’ offi ces, a renovated press box, a state-of-the-art video board and sound system, luxury boxes, as well as a new hockey and lacrosse strength and conditioning room. A new track and artifi cial fi eld was built over the summer of 2013 to give the men’s and women’s cross country and track programs an improved place to train and race, as well as serving the whole Providence College community. Taylor Natatorium also underwent extensive renovations. Next to Schneider Arena, construction on a new soccer and lacrosse stadium is in planning phase. Other facility upgrades that have highlighted Driscoll’s tenure include an $80 million renovation of the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, the home of Friar men’s basketball. The project was the result of Driscoll working strategically with lead offi cials in the City of Providence and the State of Rhode Island. The renovations enhanced the game-day experience by adding 20 luxury boxes, new seats, a video scoreboard, sound system, updated restaurant and concession stands, team store, locker rooms and new weight training/fi tness areas. These renovations enabled Providence College to successfully serve as host for the First and Second Rounds of the 2010 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. In September of 2012, renovations of Alumni Hall were completed. Alumni Hall, which is the practice facility for men’s basketball and the home of the Friar women’s basketball and volleyball teams, is now a state-of-the-art facility. Kicking off Driscoll’s vision for the improved athletic facilities footprint at Providence College, the Concannon Fitness Center, an $18 million facility, opened in August of 2007, adjacent to the $6 million Lennon Family Field (Astroturf facility), which was completed in August 2005. The Fitness Center houses the Friars’ Jimmy Walker Strength and Conditioning Center for varsity student-athletes as well as administrative and coaching offi ces, conference rooms and locker rooms. Additionally, the Concannon Fitness Center serves the whole Providence College com-munity and houses the recreation sports staff , furthering the bond between the campus community and Friar Athletics. Next, the Canavan Sports Medicine Center, which was completed in August of 2008, is equipped with an AlterG anti-gravity treadmill and a hydrotherapy room, which includes a SwimEx rehab pool and two plunges for cold/hot therapy. Driscoll established the athletic fundraising philosophy and department that has been instrumental in making program upgrades possible. He and his staff have exceeded fundraising goals on a yearly basis, achieving a 1000% increase in fundraised dollars over an 11-year period. In July of 2013, Driscoll and his fundraising staff announced the successful completion of “Mission 4 Million,” in which the department raised $4 million. The additional revenue remains critical to building and supporting championship programs and providing the best oppor-tunities to the Providence College student-athletes. The funds Driscoll and his staff raise help directly support all 19 of Providence College’s Division I programs, the Friars Forever Fund and capital projects. On June 10, 2008 Driscoll was named the 2007-08 Astro Turf Athletics Director of the Year for the Division I Northeast Region at the 43rd National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Annual Convention. He also was honored in 2009 by his alma mater, Ithaca College, when he received the Distinguished Sport Industry Leader award. Currently, Driscoll is the First Vice President of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association. He represents the BIG EAST’s athletic directors on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, serves as a mentor for the Division I-AAA mentoring program and serves on the HOCKEY EAST Television Negotiations and Marketing Committees. He previously served on the NCAA Divi-sion I Management Council, the NCAA Ice Hockey Championship Committee (Chair 2010-11) and was the Chair of the Big East Athletic Directors in 2011-12. Driscoll was an NCAA Fellows Programs Executive Mentor. Driscoll joined the Providence community after 14½ years in athletic administration at the University of California, Berkeley. At Cal, Driscoll served as the Executive Associate Athletic Director and was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department as well as overseeing football, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s water polo, rugby, strength training, equipment and the sports medicine programs. Driscoll was hired at Cal as the Associate Athletic Director for Student Services, a position he held for fi ve years. He then assumed the position of Executive Associate Athletic Director, at which point he was responsible for the administration of 27 varsity sports, a staff of 250 and a $36 million budget. Prior to coming to Providence, he served as the Acting Executive Director for Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports. During his tenure, Cal won over 20 national championships and competed in the Citrus, Copper, Alamo and Aloha Bowls. The Bears also fi nished as high as 12th in the NACDA Directors’ Cup. Before arriving at Cal, Driscoll served six years (1981-87) as the Athletic Director and Chair of the Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Intramural Sports at Mills College in Oakland, Calif. Prior to Mills, Driscoll was Assistant Athletic Director and Head Baseball and Hockey Coach at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. from 1977-81. Driscoll played hockey and baseball at Ithaca College (N.Y.), where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education in 1974. He earned his Master of Science in Physical Education/Psychology of Sports from Ithaca in 1975.
