Horizon Looks to Continue Championship Ways

By Les WillseyAIA365

Horizon High has enjoyed a nice run in girls volleyball thelast four years. The Huskies would like to make it a fifth.Horizon shoots for a second consecutive Division I title to gowith two it won at the 5A-II level in 2009 and 2010 this post-season. The Huskies have the credentials to make it hap-pen. They've reached state tournament semifinals each ofthe last five seasons.

Here's a brief look at each division and how they shape upas the calendar turns to November and the playoffs:

DIVISION I: Last year's title match -- Horizon over Xavier.Horizon has a formidable resume for the opposition headingto the tournament. The Huskies posted a 35-2 record (18-0record in power-ranking matches) and did not lose a matchto an Arizona school during the season, including three invi-tationals it participated in. Led bykills leader and all-aroundstandout Sierra Nobley, the tallest block around with 6-4 and6-2 players at the net constantly and solid defense therearen't any weaknesses. Not that they can't slip up once, butthey're likely to draw teams in the first two rounds that plaincan't beat them on their worst night. The semis and or finalsare their test. The division has four teams - perhaps six --with the ability to win the title. Add Hamilton, Xavier, Gilbert,Desert Vista and Sandra Day O'Connor to Horizon as thecontenders. Xavier has been a semifinal staple, reachingthat round or better for eight consecutive years. The Gatorshave gone titleless since 2010. The Gators feature hittersMia Teilbord and Khalia Lanier.

DIVISION II: Last year's title match -- Flagstaff over Arcadia. The top five teams in the D-II power-rankings are CampoVerde, Ironwood Ridge, Sunnyslope, Paradise Valley andTucson. That's where the title contenders end. Campo Verdewas the only D-II team to win all its power-ranking matchesand sustained most of its losses to D-I schools in invitation-als.Campo Verde presents a senior-dominated lineup thatplays well together led by Haley Christiansen. TheNighthawks are much the same and thrive on defense.Their lone power-ranking loss was to D-I Hamilton and itsother losses to D-I teams in invites. Ironwood Ridge hasreached the semis three of the last four years. Sunnyslopehas a recent, strong tradition and doesn't shy away fromplaying quality competition. Outside hitter Jenny Thompsonleads the Vikings. Tucson High has played a decent sched-ule and split matches with Campo Verde in a mid-Octobertournament at Marana Mountain View. The teams met in thattournament's title match. Paradise Valley played a rather

weak section  and freedom  schedule. That may hurt theTrojans as early as the quarterfinal round. The Trojansplayed only two teams in their power-ranking matches thatqualified for the D-II playoffs -- Sunnyslope (loss via sweep)and Verrado.

DIVISION III: Last year's title match -- Tuba City overSafford. The prowess in D-III is spread all over the state andmakes it tough to handicap. But many of these teams man-age to meet fairly often in invitationals and to some extentfreedom games. An indication of that is last year's final four, which consisted of  a No. 2, 4, 9 and 11 seed. Those seedswere Tuba City (northern), Monument Valley (northern),Safford (southern) and Seton Catholic (Valley), respectively. This year it's similar with the top eight consisting of fournorthern schools, three Valley and one southern -- Snowflake, Safford, Flagstaff and Monument Valley are thetop four in this year's power rankings and they've taken turnsbeating up on one another. Flagstaff won the D-II title lastyear and has dropped to D-III this year so being among thecontenders isn't a problem. Defending champ Tuba City is atNo. 7 this year and runner-up Safford (No. 2) reached the D-III final last year. Safford lost its top hitter to injury a coupleweeks ago so the Bulldogs may have to dig deep to nab thetitle.

DIVISION IV: Last year's title match -- Sedona Red Rockover Northwest Christian. Two schools -- perhaps three --are center stage in the hunt for the crown with recent cham-pionships. Only one gets the prize this year. The top three inthe division are Northwest Christian, Veritas Prep andSedona Red Rock. Veritas won the D-V title last year andhas moved up a division. Sedona Red Rock is the defendingD-IV champ and NWC won the D-IV title in 2011 and 2010.NWC has enjoyed the upper hand, sweeping Veritas andSedona Red Rock in regular-season matches. The division'stop player may well be Veritas's Sarah Sponcil. NWC is ledby Alexis Patterson. Sedona Red Rock suffered quite a bit ofturnover from last season and may be more like a darkhorsethan contender.

DIVISION V: Last year's title match -- Veritas over ValleyLutheran. St. David was at the top of the power rankings allseason. It ended up No. 1 with an 18-0 record in power-rank-ing contests. Even more impressive, the Tigers lost onlyONE set in those 18 matches. Five other schools from St.David's section qualified for state so that's almost 40 percentof the tournament participants that St. David beat at leastonce. St. David is led by hitters Chelsey Stover and KaylaBradford and setter Rylie Vargas.

By Don KetchumAIA365

It was easy as 1-2-3.OK, not really. But Phoenix Xavier Prep was able to use its Sept. 3 volleyball sweep of host Peoria Centennial as a

starting point. The Gators wanted to make the varsity coaching debut of Lamar-Renee Bryant a success. Bryant,

the school’s junior-varsity coach for the last eight seasons, replaced long-time coach Tim McHale, whoresigned after the team’s Division I state tournament runner-up finish to spend more time with his fami-ly.

Xavier defeated Centennial by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-17.There were times when it appeared the Gators would pull away, and other times when pesky

Centennial would come back and make things competitive.“It’s always good to get the first one under your belt. Centennial is a great team, and we were fortu-

nate to come out and win it in three (straight),’’ Bryant said.Asked what stood out to her in this opener, she said, “Service and passing. It was phenomenal.’’The transition from McHale to Bryant probably wasn’t as difficult as it would have been had Bryant

not worked with most of the players at the JV level and coached some of them in club ball. One of the players is senior tri-captain Mia Teilborg, an outside hitter. She said practices thus far have focused a bit more on fundamentals.“That’s OK, because you need to do that, particularly at this time of year,’’ Teilborg said. “We just

want to make sure we do it right, take it slow.“We may not be as big as some teams, but we know each other very well. Sometimes you can be

successful if you are smart, not necessarily strong.“Centennial is a good team. They gave everything they had. It wasn’t easy for us.’’Teilborg was involved in her share of the action, and the other two captains, senior outside hitter

Dani Westfall and sophomore outside hitter Khalia Lanier, had their moments. The 6-foot-2 Lanier, in particular, showed signs of becoming a dominant force. She seems to have

more of a court sense than she did as a freshman and now has some touch on her shots in addition tothe pure power. When she winds up and lets it fly, you don’t want to stand in front of it -- just like aRandy Johnson fastball.

Successful Debut for New Coach at Xavier

Phoenix Sunnyslope served notice in a late-season showdown at Phoenix Paradise Valley on Oct.24 that it just might be considered the front-runner for the Division II girls volleyball championship.

The Vikings were No. 2 in Arizona Interscholastic Association power points entering their match atPhoenix Paradise Valley, and PV was No. 1.

Sunnyslope silenced PV’s red-clad crowd with a dominating performance, sweeping the Trojans outthe door with a 25-21, 25-12, 25-10 victory.

It seemed like every time Paradise Valley tried to do something, Sunnyslope would anticipate italmost before it happened.

If the Vikings didn’t know it already, coach Amber LeTarte emphasized the importance of playing wellbefore this key match.

“We came in prepared and focused because we knew we were playing a strong team,’’ LeTarte said.“We talked about playing “Slope ball.’ It’s just our game, having consistency and a quick offense.“On defense, we made sure we were in the right positions and tried to anticipate every ball.’’And the Vikings had an instinct of domination.“If we got the lead, we wanted to make sure we stayed on top and didn’t allow the other team to get

back into the game,’’ LeTarte said.Senior outside hitter Jenny Thompson led the way for the Vikings, although the way her teammates

played, she was not overextended as she might be in other situations.Sunnyslope also used its height advantage with sophomores Skylar Wine and Emma Wright, both

more than 6 feet. And middle blocker Felicity Gesina had one of her better matches.“We’re starting to get fired up, get in a good routine. We just need to keep it up,’’ LeTarte said.

Sunnyslope Powerful in Division II

Buckeye Verrado sent a message to volleyball teams in Division II on Sept. 4.And that message is, “Even though we moved up from Division III, we have a good team and we

aren’t going to go away any time soon.’’The Vipers showed why with a 3-1 victory over visiting Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep, which had

reached the D-II semifinals last season.Verrado won the first two games against Notre Dame 25-23 and 25-18, dropped the third game25-21

and then regrouped to win the fourth game 25-23, holding back a furious rally by the Saints in theprocess.

“This was a huge win for our school,’’ said Verrado coach Jamie Gordon.“Being in Division III, Section III last year, we didn’t often go against established teams like Notre

Dame. So we didn’t know how this one was going to go. But we played well tonight. We are just a littlewest Valley school, trying to make a name for ourselves.’’

Verrado, which opened the season on Sept. 3 with a 3-0 win over nearby Buckeye, trailed NotreDame 22-18 in the first game. But the Vipers maintained their composure and came back for the win.

Notre Dame trailed by as many as 11 points in the fourth game, only to battle back again, cutting thelead to 22-21 and then 24-23 after Verrado scored two straight points and nearly pushed the Saintsover the edge.

Gordon called timeout and gathered her players together.“We just need one point, one point and we can go home. Just focus on that,’’ she said she told the

girls.Verrado got some great serves from junior Maitland Longquist and strong all-around play from junior

Rylie Steg. But the player who caught everyone’s eye was sophomore outside hitter Celine White. She displayed an effective mix of power and touch.Gordon said the 5-foot-10 White raised the level of her game over the summer by working with the

Arizona High Performance club team.“It is going to be very interesting to see her continue to develop over the next couple of years,’’

Gordon said.

The girls volleyball team from Phoenix Veritas Prep is fortunate to have Sarah Sponcil back for hersenior season.

The two-time Arizona Republic Small Schools Player of the Year and last season’s Gatorade Playerof the Year honoree can do virtually anything on the floor.

She can dig the ball from the back row, set up teammates with excellent passes and then seeminglysuspend herself in mid-air, like combatants in the Matrix movies, before making opponents retreat withpowerful kill after kill after kill.

All of that said, she can’t do it alone. Yes, Veritas has won three straight state championships, butthe Falcons have moved from Division V to Division IV, where a whole new world awaits.

“There are so many good teams in this division. I tell the girls to focus on every match as if it were achampionship-caliber match. No team is going to roll over,’’ said Veritas coach Wes Goodwin.

Such was the case on Tuesday night (Sept. 17), when visiting Tempe Prep stood its ground beforefalling in four games, 17-25, 12-25, 25-22 and 14-25.

Sponcil, who has made a commitment to Loyola-Marymount in California, was everywhere as usualagainst Tempe Prep.

She got help from fellow senior, libero Abby Hickman, and sophomore outside hitter Kelly Anderson, who could be the heir apparent.

In a way, it was a good thing that Tempe Prep came back for a win in Game 3, according toGoodwin. Senior outside hitter Kaitlin Shroll was one of the keys for the Knights.

Tempe Prep played Veritas pretty much even in the early stages of Game 4, before Veritas started topull away.

“When they came back and won, I got kind of nervous. Hopefully it will keep us on our toes and wecan learn from it,’’ said Goodwin.

When Phoenix Horizon’s volleyball team played host to Phoenix Xavier on Sept. 25, Horizon won thefirst two sets but nearly let the match slip away as Xavier came roaring back to force five sets.

As Horizon prepared to visit Xavier in a rematch on Wednesday night (Oct. 16), the Huskies wereintent on not allowing that type of thing to happen again.

It didn’t happen. Not even close. From the opening serve, the Division I defending champion Huskies were focused and played one of

their best all-around matches of the season, rolling to a 25-18, 25-15, 25-18 sweep.“We came into the match with the mindset of that it would be all about our side of the net and what

we would be able to do,’’ Horizon coach Valorie McKenzie said. “It went to five sets last time, and itwas time for us to play good volleyball.’’

According to McKenzie, her team frustrated Xavier with a very high percentage of digs – in the upper90 percent range – and that limited the impact of Xavier’s kill attempts.

“We picked up our defense,’’ McKenzie said.Horizon had 52 kills that were pretty much spread evenly across the board. Sierra Nobley led the

way with 11. And setter Lauren Conati did her job to near-perfection with 32 assists.

The girls’ volleyball team from Prescott High doesn’t appear to have a “go-to’’ player. Any of theBadgers appear to be capable of leading the team on a given night.

Devoid of divas is just the way coach Shellie Bowman likes it.“Our chemistry just keeps getting better and better,’’ she said. “This is the best team effort we’ve had

at Prescott in a long time. It’s a blessing we’ve been given.’’Prescott followed up their Sept. 3 season-opening sweep of host Cottonwood Mingus with another

three-game sweep on Sept. 5, this time at Cave Creek Cactus Shadows. The front-line play of junior Sydney Koehler, sophomore Raphael Temple and junior Sierra Howard,

combined with good service throughout the lineup, proved to be too big of an obstacle for CactusShadows.

“Great passing, too, and we got some blocks. We are very athletic,’’ Bowman said. Before the season, Bowman said she was excited to see what this team is capable of, and nothing

has occurred to change her mind. After Flagstaff High had a remarkable unbeaten championship season in Division II in 2012, it

moved down to Division III this year. Many teams breathed a sigh of relief, but not necessarily Prescott.“We still play them, in our home opener,’’ Bowman said. The Badgers emerged victorious in that contest.Whatever happens the rest of the season, the team will make the experience fun – together.
