    It is a joy to welcome you to Naugatuck Valley Community College,a caring and dynamic institution where students always come rst.Surrounded by splendid gardens and grounds and served by talentedand credentialed faculty, staff and administrators at both our Waterburyhome campus and our Danbury Center, the College offers comprehensiveeducational opportunities for both those who are just beginning and thosewho are continuing their personal journey to a better future.

    Our catalog presents prospective students with a rich and diverse arrayof career and academic programs, including allied health, aviation,dance, digital arts, early childhood education, engineering technology,manufacturing, horticulture, hospitality management, human services,

    liberal arts and sciences and many more. In addition, we participatein multiple transfer and articulation agreements designed to facilitatestudent transfers to the State Universities and beyond.

     Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC) takes pride in its historicrole as an engine for change in the lives of our students and in thecommunities we serve through its strong relationships with Connecticutagencies that promote support for educational, labor, economic andcommunity development initiatives. To that end, we offer programsdesigned to inspire and promote engagement both on campus and in ourcommunities. Our students benet from the evening bus service whichtheir predecessors helped bring to the citizens of Waterbury, from havinga Fulbright Scholar-In-Residence for academic year 2013-14, fromthe federal GEAR UP grant funding for college preparation and fromthe Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center which supports localworkforce needs.

    Our varied degree, certicate and non-credit program offerings make Naugatuck Valley Community College the place to be. A new academicyear brings the promise of exciting new opportunities for students. InWaterbury, our learning commons along the 5th oor afford studentsquiet places to study or socialize, and our Academic Center forExcellence (ACE) offers mentoring, counseling and tutoring servicesfor all students. These services are replicated on a smaller scale in

    our growing Danbury Center. Whether on our main campus or at our

    Danbury Center, NVCC is alive with cultural activities for students, theirfamilies and the communities we serve.

     Naugatuck Valley Community College resulted from the mergerin 1992 of Mattatuck Community College and Waterbury StateTechnical College by the Connecticut General Assembly. TheCollege’s Role and Scope ows from the October 1992 compre-hensive Mission Statement established by the Board of Trustees.The College’s main campus is designated as the Central NaugatuckValley Region Higher Education Center. The location serves asone of the regional ofces of Charter Oak State College, Con-necticut’s external degree program and an off-campus location for

    Central and Western Connecticut State Universities, Starbase andAdvanced Manufacturing programs of Kaynor Technical School.  The College, conveniently located at the crossroads of statehighway 8 and Interstate 84, is accessible by public transportation.It serves over 25 towns and cities in the west central part of the Stateof Connecticut. Waterbury, with a population of over 110,000, andDanbury with a population of over 65,500 are considered the anchorcities in a region anked by small rural and suburban communities.Recently, the college began increasing offerings in three Danburylocations: 183 Main Street, W.C.S.U., and at Danbury High School.  The College is comprehensive in its offerings of over 100 as-sociate degree and credit certicate programs. In addition, the Collegeoffers hundreds of non-credit learning activities that are customizedto fulll industry specic training, job skills upgrading, and personalenrichment opportunities. Technical and technological education

    is a key component of our programs and services. Our specializedtraining programs serve the needs of the people and the industriesof the State of Connecticut. Such diversity makes the institution asocial, cultural and intellectual environment for people of all ages.  Learners range from youth in elementary and middle school,to young adults just out of high school, to mature adults returningfor employment, retraining or leisure time activities. Learnerswho are non-native speakers of English take English as a SecondLanguage (ESL) classes to help them achieve personal, professionaland academic goals. Businesses and industries access additionaltraining, learning resources, and cultural enrichment opportunitiesfor their employees.

    The institution accommodates the needs of the physicallychallenged. It houses Smart classrooms, large and small classrooms,specialized labs for science, art, and engineering; computer and

    technology labs; a learning resources center, a student center,and a ne arts center that provides spaces for music and drama productions.

    LEARNING

    The College provides services from a highly qualied full-timefaculty complemented by a talented pool of instructors and trainers.Outstanding learner-centered instruction is central to our mission.

     NVCC prepares students for transfer to other institutions and for theworld of work. A strong core of general education gives studentsa broad background that prepares them to change or modify careerdirection or to transfer to other institutions of higher education.  Degree and certicate programs include computer training,writing and research. For those who come to the College unpreparedfor its rigors, a developmental skills program supports critical

    thinking, writing, and math competency to help students succeed.  The College involves all students in mathematics, reading,and writing and provides students with supportive services incounseling, tutoring, testing, and individualized assistance.

    The College has a number of liaisons with area elementaryand secondary schools. The College Career Pathways preparesstudents in high school for direct entry into college curricula. TheConnecticut Pre-Engineering Program for middle school studentsand the Kids-on-Campus Summer Program for elementary andsecondary students enrich both the College and the community.  NVCC offers additional supportive student services includingadvising, nancial aid, health services, peer tutoring, services forveterans, minority student services, a bookstore, student govern-ment, student organizations and activities.

    GENERAL OVERVIEW

      There are a number of collaborative Community CollegeSystem initiatives including the Center for Teaching, the Collegeof Technology, the Basic Skills Testing and Placement Program,and the Business and Industry Services Network. PUBLIC (COMMUNITY) SERVICE

    Art, dance, drama, lm and music presentations are regular of-ferings at the college as the instructors develop student and com-munity potential in the performing and ne arts. The magnicent

    stages, workshops, dance and music studios provide the faculty,students, and community with settings that make the classroomscome alive with sight and sound.  The Max R. Traurig Learning Resources Center Library

     provides the region with a collection of over 50,000 books, printsubscriptions to magazines, and hundreds of CDs and DVDs.In addition, community borrowers may visit the library to usecomputers to access electronic books, the Internet, and dozensof electronic databases for newspapers, magazines, professional

     journals, media, and a host of other resources.

    STRATEGIC PLANNING

     NVCC is currently operating under a three-year Strategic Plan. Itis published on the college website. The plan covers the academicyears from September 2013 to May 2016.

     by 10%, bringing NVCC closer to the top tier nationally forcommunity college retention.

    3. Graduation rate will increase by 57%, achieving the com-munity college national average.

    4. Graduation rate for underrepresented students will increase by 75%.

    5. Increase the total number of degrees and credit certicates by 57% and non-credit certicates by 15%.

    6. Job placement rate of completers within a year after gradu-ation will increase by 10%.

    STATUTORY MANDATE

    The legislative mandate for community-technical colleges, as provided in Public Act 92-126, Section 27(a) states:

    a. The primary responsibilities of the regional community-technicalcolleges shall be:

      1. to provide programs of occupational, vocational, technicaland technological and career education designed to providetraining for immediate employment, job retraining or up-grading of skills to meet individual, community and stateman-power needs;

      2. to provide programs of general study including, but not limitedto, remediation, general and adult education, and continuing

    education designed to meet individual student goals;  3. to provide programs of general study for college transfer

    representing the rst two years of baccalaureate education;  4. to provide community service programs as dened in sub-

    section 5(b) of this section;  5. to provide student support services including, but not limited

    to, admissions, counseling, testing, placement, individualizedinstruction and efforts to serve students with special needs.

     b. As used in this section, “community service programs” meaneducational, cultural, recreational and community-directedservices which a community-technical college may providein addition to its regular academic program. Such communityservice programs may include, but shall not be limited to:

      1. activities designed to enrich the intellectual, cultural and

    social life of the community;  2. educational services designed to promote the development

    of skills for the effective use of leisure time;  3. activities and programs designed to assist in the identica-

    tion and solution of community problems; and  4. utilization of college facilities and services by community

    groups to the extent such usage does not conict with theregular schedule of the college.

    ACCREDITATION STATEMENT Naugatuck Valley Community College is accredited by the NewEngland Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc. through itsCommission on Institutions of Higher Education.  Accreditation of an institution of higher education by the

     New England Association indicates that it meets or exceeds criteriafor the assessment of institutional quality periodically appliedthrough a peer review process. An accredited college or universityis one which has available the necessary resources to achieve itsstated purposes through appropriate educational programs, issubstantially doing so, and gives reasonable evidence that it willcontinue to do so in the foreseeable future.     ADMISSIONS INFORMATION

    ADMISSION POLICY Naugatuck Valley Community College is an open admission insti-tution with selective placement into some programs and courses.Acceptance to any degree or certicate program requires that anapplicant be a graduate of an approved secondary school or haveearned either a State High School Equivalency Diploma or a GeneralEducational Development (G.E.D.) diploma. Graduating high schoolseniors are accepted into a degree or certicate program and permit-ted to register prior to their date of high school graduation underthe condition that they submit proof of high school completion byJuly 7 of the year in which they graduated high school. Failure todo so will result in the student being removed from their programof study and switched to non-degree status.

    Admission to the College does not necessarily mean admission toall courses and programs. Several degree and certicate programshave specic admissions criteria. Please refer to the Programs ofStudy section of the catalog for specic admission requirements.

    Students who do not have a high school diploma or its equivalentmay enroll at the College as non-degree students. Non-degree stu-dents are not elble for nancal ad, bt a tae advantaeof the Connectct Tton Paent Plan.

    High school students who demonstrate sufcient scholastic ability

    and who present written approval from their high school principal ora designated representative may register for courses as non-degreestudents on a space available basis.

    Students may gain admission to Naugatuck Valley in either the fallsemester (August) or spring semester (January). In some programs,admission is specically for the fall or spring semester only.

    Classes are offered days, evenings and weekends, as well as online.Part-time students enroll for a maximum of 11 credits; full-time stu-dents enroll for a minimum of 12 credits. Courses vary in the amountof credit they carry; however, most courses are worth three (3) credits.

    Adsson to Enlsh as a Second Lanae CorsesThe English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at NaugatuckValley Community College are designed to serve the needs of non-

    native speakers of English. The ESL Department offers a multi-level program to increase students’ prociency in English in all four areas:reading, writing, listening and speaking.

    In addition to the basic application procedures, a writing sample andthe English Prociency (LOEP) portion of the Accuplacer Place-ment Test must be completed before students can register for thecourses. The English placement for non-native speakers of Englishis determined by the ESL ofce and is based primarily on these tests.

    Adsson to Nrsn and Alled Health ProrasApplicants to the Phscal Therapst Assstant Prora mustapply by October 15 for the following spring. All prerequisitesmust be completed by October 15, except for the Anatomy andPhysiology I prerequisite, which must be completed no later than

    the fall semester of the application deadline.Applicants to the Radoloc Technolo and  Resprator CareAssocate Deree Proras must apply by Janar 15 of the yearthey are seeking admission and prerequisites must be completed

     by January 15.

    Applicants to the Assocate Deree Nrsn Prora must apply by Febrar 1 and all prerequisites must be completed by Feb-ruary 1, except for the Anatomy and Physiology II prerequisite,which must be completed no later than the spring semester of theapplication deadline.

    Each program has specic admission criteria which can be foundin the Programs of Study section of the catalog. Admission to these

     programs is highly selective and based on academic record andassessment testing. A program application for admission must be

    submitted in addition to the College Application.

    Adsson to Technolo Deree and Certcate ProrasIn addition to the standard requirements necessary for admissionto the College, students applying for admission to technical degreeand certicate programs should possess a solid background in sci-ence and mathematics. Refer to the programs of study section ofthe catalog for details.

    ADmiSSiON TO NON-CREDiT LiFELONgLEARNiNg PROgRAmS Non-credit programs are open to all citizens in the region for pro-fessional and personal development. Formal college application isnot required. Registration is accepted for all courses. Certication

     programs have specic requirements that should be understood prior to registering. Customized programs are specially tailoredfor organizations and companies that address workforce demands/needs. Lifelong learning staff are available to provide information.

    APPLiCATiON DEADLiNESThe College admits students on a rst-come, rst-served basis. Forthe fall semester, which begins in late August or early September,

     preference is given to applications received by Jne 1. For thespring semester, which begins in January, preference is given toapplications received byDeceber 15. Applicants will be accepted

    after these dates provided openings are available.

    Applications for the Physical Therapist Assistant Program are avail-able in Aprl and must be submitted by October 15. Applicationsfor Radiologic Technology and Respiratory Care Programs areavailable in October and must be submitted by Janar 15. Theonline application for the Nursing Program is available Noveber1 and must be submitted by Febrar 1.

    course with a grade of “C” or better • scored 500 or higher on the SAT Math exam

    • scored 18 or higher on the ACT Math exam• scored 450 or higher on the SAT English exam (Critical Readingor Writing portions)

    • scored 21 or higher on the ACT English exam OR scored 47or higher on the ACT English and Reading portions combined 

    • have achieved the appropriate Advanced Placement (AP) orCollege Level Examination Program (CLEP) scores

    • have taken the ACCUPLACER® placement test at anothercommunity college or university

    Appropriate documentation (transcripts, nal semester grade report,SAT or ACT score report, ACCUPLACER® score report, AP scores,CLEP scores) must be submitted to the Admissions Ofce for reviewto determine if the requirements for exemption are met.

    Students are encouraged to schedule their test as soon as possible to

    ensure availability of classes at the time of registration. Appointmentsto take the test can be scheduled through the Admissions Ofce.

    Transfer Students

    Transfer students who have not previously attended Naugatuck

    Valley must follow the procedures for New Students.Students who are interested in receiving credit for course workcompleted at another institution must request that an ofcial copyof their college transcript be sent to the Admissions Ofce at

     Naugatuck Valley. Students who have attended institutions outsideConnecticut should also provide course descriptions for the coursesthey would like to transfer.

    Transfer credit may be granted for comparable courses completedat regionally accredited colleges and universities. The total amountof transfer credit granted may not exceed 75 percent of the creditsrequired by the College in a specic program. Transfer credits willnot be used in the calculation of grade point averages. For moreinformation see “Transfer Courses” section.

    Placement testing may be waived for transfer students who have

    earned an associate's degree or higher or who have completedcollege level English and/or mathematics with grade of "C" or better. SAT or ACT scores may also be acceptable.

    immuNizATiON REquiREmENTSBy law, all higher education institutions in Connecticut requireeach full-time or matriculating student born after December 31,1957 to provide proof of adequate immunizations before permit-ting the student to enroll.

    New and Transfer StudentsIf you were born after December 31, 1956, Connecticut State Lawrequires that all full-time (degree seeking and non-degree/non-matric-ulating) and part-time matriculating students enrolled in postsecondaryschools be adequately protected against measles, mumps and rubella

    (MMR). In addition, all full-time and matriculating students, exceptthose born in the continental United States prior to January 1, 1980,must provide proof of immunization against varicella (chicken pox).Students must have two (2) doses of each vaccine administered atleast one (1) month apart to insure adequate immunization.

    If students are unable to provide the above data due to adocumented medical condition, an explanatory statement onoffice letterhead from an attending physician must be submit-ted to the college. Students may present serologic (blood test)evidence in place of the vaccination to verify immunity. Anactual laboratory report must be presented documentingimmunity.  The law also allows for exemption due to religious beliefs.A student requesting a religious exemption must submit a writtenstatement that such immunization would be contrary to his/herreligious beliefs.  Failure to comply with these guidelines will prevent courseregistration, release of transcripts, and eligibility for nancial aid.  In the event of an outbreak of measles, mumps, rubella orvaricella on this campus, students who are not in compliance(including a medical or religious exemption), will be excludedfrom classes for a minimum of 18 days per incubation period oruntil their immunizations are complete.

    iNTERNATiONAL STuDENT ADmiSSiONStudents who are not citizens or permanent residents of the UnitedStates, but who are interested in studying at Naugatuck Valley Com-munity College, may do so by applying as international students.

    that international students apply by the following dates:  The fall term begins in August; the application deadline is June 15.

    Evdence of Enlsh Procenc International students are required to submit proof of English

     prociency. Preferably, applicants should take the TOEFL testand achieve a score of 500 on the paper test or 61 on the Inter -net-based test. The IELTS exam is also acceptable. Enrollmentin English as a Second Language coursework may be requireduntil a higher level of English prociency is attained.

    Fors and Docentaton Needed for For i-20 International students who are in F-1 visa status, or who need F-1 visastatus, must work with the international student advisor to obtain theForm I-20. In order to receive the Form I-20, international students must

     prove that they have the funds immediately available to pay for the rstyear of tuition and living expenses. To apply for the I-20, students mustsubmit the forms and documentation listed below.

    1. International Student Information Sheet.2. Certication of Finances: This form contains a summary

    of the student’s nancial resources and ability to pay fortuition, fees, and living expenses.

    3. Promise of Cash Support signed by the sponsor and nota-rized: This form states that the sponsor will assume some orall responsibility for the student’s expenses during his/herstay in the U.S. The form must be supplemented by bankdocumentation proving availability of the promised funds.

    4. Promise of Free Room and Board: This form is necessary ifa local sponsor is providing the student's housing and food.5. Copy of passport identity pages.6. Students who are already in the U.S. should provide copies

    of the I-94 card and visa stamp. Students applying fromoutside the U.S. will need to bring these documents to theinternational student advisor upon arrival.

    The Form I-20 will not be issued until all of the above itemshave been received and the applicant has been admitted.Students will then be advised on how to pay the $200 SEVISfee required by the Department of Homeland Security.     Hosn There are no dormitories on campus. International students

    Transportaton   NVCC is a commuter college and students are expected to makearrangements for transportation to and from the College. International students maynot be immediately eligible for a Connecticut driver's license.
