Global Leadership and Management Graduate Students Travel to Chile

Nineteen students from the Friends University Master of Global Leadership and Management (MGLM) program traveled Aug. 4-12, 2012, to Santiago, Chile.

As of June 25, the Alumni Office learned that the Friends University state license plates were shipped from the Division of Vehicles to all Kansas county tag offices. This means that by the time you read this issue of Campus Connection, the plates will be available to pick up from your local county tag office!

A supplemental order for Sedgwick County has been placed as of July 16. If you did not pre-purchase a plate from the University, you can still purchase one “over-the-counter” next time your tag comes due.

If you have any questions, please contact the Alumni Office via email at [email protected].

In this issue of Campus Connection, we are pleased to spotlight alumna Jill Laffoon, G’99.

Jill earned her associates degree through the Program for Adult College Education (PACE). She currently serves as director of marketing for the Kansas Masonic Home in Wichita. Most recently, she passed the examination for professional public relations accreditation(APR) from the Universal Accreditation Board.

Jill studied for and completed her examination as a member of the Kansas Chapter of Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). She is currently the 36th public relations professional in the state to hold accreditation status.

Jill has a unique marketing background that includes real world education in local radio, newspaper, advertising agency work, and a successful run as a retail store owner. Having played on both sides of the advertising agency-client fence, she knows her way around marketing and sales down to the details of execution.

Previously, she served in various business and communication positions with Passport Ink, Coldwell Banker and Associated Advertising.

When she isn’t working, Jill loves to spend time with her three children, enjoys scuba diving, and describes herself as someone who “can share a ridiculous amount of... Wichita trivia,” and is “easily distracted by shoes and shiny things.”

Friends University celebrated the inauguration of its 13th president, Dr. T.J. Arant, March 30, 2012. The ceremony took place at 2 p.m. in Garvey Gymnasium in the Garvey Physical Education Center.

Approximately 600 students, alumni, parents, friends and members from the local community were in attendance, along with nearly 50 delegates from visiting colleges who showed their support.

Rodney Pitts, G’82, chair of Friends University Board of Trustees, presided over the installation of the president, followed by Dr. Arant’s inaugural address.

Music was provided by the Friends University student brass quintet, the University Concert Band and the Singing Quakers.

A cocktail-style reception in McKay Gymnasium at the Casado Campus Center followed the ceremony, with music provided by the Friends University jazz ensemble and string ensemble. Guests enjoyed a variety of hors d’oeuvres provided by Sodexo catering services.

This historic occasion was a rare opportunity to highlight Friends University and its place within the realm of higher education and the regions it serves.

Program SpotlightIn this issue of Campus Connection, we congratulate Dr. Jason Ferguson and his Computer Information Science (CIS) faculty on exceeding program expectations.

Since June 2011, the CIS program has included the Information Systems Analyst (ISA) certification test into its capstone class. The ISA test is nationally-normed, and designed for IT professionals with advanced experience.

After the results of the first ISA test, the program incorporated more data-driven curriculum to fill in gaps in students’ knowledge tested on the exam.

Since then, one-fourth of the students who have taken the test have received ISA certification, and 14 have received the mastery level. Additionally, Friend University’s average test scores are 5 percent above the national average.

ISA certification is not required, but it adds an extra set of credentials that CIS graduates can put on their resumes to show that their knowledge is above and beyond just a degree.

If you know someone who may be interested in learning more about the CIS program, please have them contact [email protected].
