1. Managing Multiple ServersAdditional KVM switches can increase the overall capacity of your installation. There are two methods for expanding your KVM switch installation: Cascading and Daisy-chaining.

CascadingCascading involves using the KVM port(s) of a parent KVM switch (one that is above a switch linked down from it) to connect to the console ports of a child KVM switch. With numerous child switches linked down from the parent, the ef-fect is reminiscent of the way water cascades down a waterfall. Cascading adds capacity to a KVM installation, but the parent KVM switch loses at least one KVM port for each cascaded child switch.

Daisy-chainingDaisy-chaining refers to connecting two KVM switches via dedicated daisy-chain ports. The switches are strung together in a chain, similar to the way children make chains of daisies by tying the end of one daisy to the head of another.

A daisy-chained installation does not utilize KVM ports or user ports to connect one switch to another as in a cascaded installation, and thereby preserves the number of valuable ports. The port capacity of a daisy-chained installation is the

total of all the KVM ports for all of the KVM switches on the chain.

3. Turning Your USB KVM Switch or Computer Sharing Device into a Combo (PS/2-USB) Device

USB port technology has emerged in response to the proliferation of external peripheral devices (keyboards, mice, scanners, digital cameras, removable drives, etc.), that are increasingly being connected to the latest generation of computers. ATEN already offers several types of KVM switch with USB console ports (for keyboards and mice) to meet this market shift. However, we know that many of our customers want to use a PS/2 keyboard and PS/2 mouse or a PS/2 keyboard and USB mouse with their USB KVM Switch.

To satisfy our customers, ATEN has developed USB-to-PS/2 converters that allow users to install a PS/2 keyboard and either a PS/2 or USB mouse on their USB KVM Switch or Computer Sharing Device.

HotkeysOur KVM switches provide an extensive, easy-to-use, hotkey function that makes it convenient to access, control, and confi gure your KVM installation from the keyboard. They offer the simplest way to access the connected computers.

Hotkey ModeAll hotkey operations begin with invoking Hotkey Mode. The invocation sequence depends on the product and the users preference. In each case, there is a factory default sequence and an alternate sequence that the user can select instead. The Hotkey invocation sequence for each product is shown in the table. The default sequence is given fi rst and appears in bold text.

Port SelectionHotkey port switching simply involves pressing the appropriate hotkey sequence. In some cases simply invoking Hotkey Mode cycles you through the available ports; in others, the sequence involves specifying the Port ID that the computer you want to access is connected to; while in still other cases, it involves pressing one of the Arrow keys.

More and more of the best-known fast food chains are expanding and setting up restaurants in new locations. A key element to running an effi cient fast food establishment is meeting the high demand of drive-thru orders that come in during prime meal-time hours. When orders back up, customers waiting for their food grow increasingly impatient causing the staff to focus primarily on getting the orders out as quickly as possible, rather than the more important issues of getting the orders right and making sure the quality of the food is up to standard. Improving effi ciency through reducing mistakes and creating a smoothly running cooperative environment between the drive-thru lane, the counter, and the kitchen, is always the biggest challenge that a new establishment featuring drive-thru service has to meet.

Using touchscreens to let their customers input their own orders is one of the latest methods being used in the ongoing attempt to eliminate ordering mistakes. In addition, by letting the customers place their own orders via the touchscreen menu, the entire process is faster and smoother leaving both the customer and the restaurant satisfi ed. By reducing the number of ordering errors, and by eliminating the time and effort involved in accurately communicating the orders verbally, the restaurant was able to cut the over-all order process time in half, and reduce its labor overhead, as well. Serial Console ManagementTo provide additional access and management capabilities, CN8000 KVM on the NET switch allow VT100 based serial devices to easily coexist and be integrated into your installation. Serial terminal access can be accomplished either with the switch's built-in serial viewer, or via third party software (such as PuTTY) for Telnet and SSH sessions.

Centralized Server MonitoringMonitoring server activity over the entire installation from a single monitor couldnt be easier. The switch's Panel Array Mode allows administrators to display the video output of up to 16 servers on their monitors at the same time, while a convenient Auto Scan feature permits automatic switching from port to port at user-specifi ed intervals.

The LCD KVM switches offer a space-saving, streamlined approach to KVM switch technology by integrating an LCD panel, full keyboard, and touchpad in a 1U single rail housing. The LCD display is built into the cover; the keyboard and touchpad are built into the base. Slide the KVM module out; fl ip the cover up; and you are ready to work. When you have fi nished, simply fl ip the cover down and slide the KVM module away.

Convenient Security via Fingerprint Identifi cation

The LCD KVM Switch's built-in fi ngerprint reader provides an alternate, more convenient, authentication method than logging in with a user name and password. For each user, 1 to 4 of their fi ngers can be scanned by the reader into the switch's internal database. Users are authenticated at login time by presenting any of their fi ngers for scanning. (Models with Fingerprint Identifi cation Reader Only)

Enhanced Console ControlIn addition to the console integrated into the LCD KVM Switch, it also contains a set of ports that let you connect an external KVM console. This provides administrators with the convenience and fl exibility of using a standard keyboard/monitor/mouse console. It also allows two users to share access and control of the servers.
